Updated my OS to Yosemite ver 10.10.3 Need to access iPhoto library in Photos. I have over 400 Mega pictures on a partitioned external drive. Tried dragging but no change.

I updated my OS to 10.10.3. but now can't access my iPhoto library in Photo.
I have an iMac (20 inch, Mid 2007) with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDRs SDRAM and have over 400 mega bits of pictures on a partitioned external drive: 2 TB G-Technology by Hitachi connected by FireWire 800 to my iMac. My iPhoto application no longer reveals what version of iPhoto I have, but it was last updated on Dec 14, 2013 with a 1.7 GB file.
Tried dragging from its place on external hard drive.
When I go into the iPhoto it says it is not compatible with OS X Yosemite but the link offered to App Store says they do not have an update.
Help?

Apple dropped both iPhoto and Aperture with the Yosemite release, and I am not happy about that as I used Aperture, but try holding down the option key when you click on the Photos icon. That should bring up a box asking what library you want to connect to. In my case it had both Aperture and Photos. But there is also a choice called "other" that I would think would allow you to navigate to where your library is located and select it.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

my iphoto wont open since i updated my mac, please help? it says i need to install an iphoto library upgrader which I have installed but still cant see my photos.

What version of iPhoto are you using? 9.6 is the current version.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Can't access iPhoto library on external hard drive (from Mavericks days) now that I'm running Yosemite on my Macbook.

I have an iPhoto library on an external hard drive (from when I had Mavericks), but now that I've upgraded to Yosemite, "Photos" won't open my iPhoto library. Ideas for how to import that iPhoto Library into Photos?

"Photos" won't open my iPhoto library. Ideas for how to import that iPhoto Library into Photos?
What is the file system of the external drive, and how is the drive connected?  DO you get an error message? If yes, which message?
You can only open a library on a directly connected drive, formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).  If the drive is correctly formatted, hold down the alt/options key while you are launching photos, and then select your library from the Library Chooser Panel.
If the library is not listed in the panel, use the "Other Library" button.

  • Just updated to Yosemite v 10.10 and can't access iPhoto

Just updated to Yosemite v. 10.10 and can't access iPhoto.  How do I upgrade my iPhoto?

I'm having the same problem. Just installed 10.10 and couldn't get iPhoto to load. I went to the iPhoto library upgrade installer and downloaded it but it gives me a never ending multicolored pinwheel when I designate the location as my hard drive. When I load the upgrade anyway it says successful but then I get an error message that the iPhoto version that I have is too old.  When I go to the app store I find that there is no way to load any newer version. Please help.

  • Is it a good idea to migrate my 200 gb iphoto library to photos in yosemite?

Right now im in Mavericks in my imac, running iPhoto 9.5.1. It stores all that I have taken in the past 10 years. My imac now only has 30gb left. What steps do I take, im freaking out..I don't want to lose all my awesome family vacay, baby pics etc..
Here's what im planning and tell if this could be a big mistake.
I will backup my library as a copy on an external and then time machine it also. After that I will Update my system to Yosemite. After Yosemite update I will go to my app store and under purchases I will click the iPhoto update button (even though it says iphoto was purchased in 2011, Im assuming its still safe to update it that way because its the only way to update the app). Then after iPhoto is updated to 9.6.1, I will then open it up and make sure is was safely updated. Then after I make sure all of my stuff is in the new updated iPhoto I will try and migrate it to photos. (not sure of the exact steps on this) After I migrate the whole 200gb library to photos I will then pay for and turn on icloud 500gb storage and use my library from here on out through the cloud. Backing up the library off of icloud every so often. (keep in mind I will still have only about 30 gb left in my internal hd) This brings me to another question. Does anybody know how much extra space you need on your internal HD to migrate from iPhoto 200gb library to the photos app. I know in the end it wont take up any extra space on you internal HD, but I do know that it does take extra space during the migration but I just don't know how much extra..
Over all I need some feedback on my plan, I don't want to lose any pics or videos and I also just don't know where to go from here with continual photo storage.
    Thanks Community!

Your plan is generally OK, but I would suggest a different approach, since you're so frazzled by it.
    1. Update iPhoto first; check and backup the iPhoto Library;
    2. Upgrade to Yosemite; This will prompt you to migrate to Photos, but you don't have to do it, so don't!
    3. iPhoto 9.6.1 will remain in your Applications folder and you can continue to use it;
    4. Learn more about Photos, it's features and how iCloud Photo Library really works (for example, once you turn it on, you won't need to download manually);
    5. When you do feel you know enough about Photos, only then launch it to migrate your photos; after migration your iPhoto Library remains fully functional, in case you want to revert to using iPhoto, so that part should not worry you.
Thet biggest issue you have is the small amount of free space. You might want to address tha first, or locate your new Photos Library on an external drive as well, and only move it to your local drive when it's been optimized (or keep it on an external).

  • After update to 10.9.4, it is not possible to use my iphoto library for the screen saver

after the update to 10.9.4, it is not possible anymore to choose a folder in my iphoto library for the screen saver

Problem solved after the third! reboot!

  • Did the new iPhoto 9.4 update with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 totally disorder anybody else's iPhoto library? Mine is now a total cluster f*

After updating to version 9.4 my entire iPhoto library became completely disordered. After updating, then opening iPhoto, it promoted me that it had to rebuild my iPhoto library. Then after it did that it said it found inconsistencies it needed to fix. THEN not only is every event completely out of order, and not the way I had it before. It is now ordered completely randomly. At the top there are two events from 2012, then the 3rd event is from 2008, the 4th event is from 2010, the 5th event is then from 2011. I have 12,000 photos and NEVER has any iPhoto update wonked out the order of my iPhoto library. Now it feels almost unusable!

Yes, mine too. The photos within the events can still be sorted but the actual event order is not carrying over to itunes or idevices. If I click the photos tab in iphoto, they (events) are in a scrambled order with no rhyme or reason. That same order is syncing to itunes and idevices. I spoke to support and they are confused as well but easily able to duplicate. Very frustrating. I have 46 events, most listed by years such as 2011,2012, etc. 2012 is about halfway through the list while 2011 is next to last. everything else is inbetween. The first event i see is 1975, the second is 2009. I hope they fix this soon as all the other regular attempts are futile. You can rebuild, delete the ipod photo cache or fix permissions. nothing will reorder the event listing under photos in iphoto, which unfortunately is where itunes gets its order from.

  • Updated to yosemite and can no longer access iPhoto.  Will not allow me to see my pictures stored on computer???

My children updated system to yosemite, but i am now locked out of iPhoto and unable to access my pictures.  Tells me i need to install and app, and when i go to store, it tells me this app is not available.  How do I regain control of my photo library....

iPhoto did not come up in Spotlight and it was not in the applications folder and I did not delete it.  I also did not remove it from the dock, but it was gone. Thus, it is my assumption that the 10.10.3 update removed it.  If not, then it disappeared and Apple should allow you to get your old iPhoto back, but that also is now not available and I certainly did not remove iPhoto from the app store.
I usually perform updates, especially point updates to incorporate security fixes. I have used Apple products for many years and this is the worst mess I have ever seen.  The new Photos application crashes instantly and iPhoto is gone. They could have at least left iPhoto alone for a few months, instead of removing it from my system and from the store.

  • Since I've updated my IMac to Yosemite, my screensaver preferences will not stay on IPhoto, it always reverts back to National  Geographic pictures.  Anyone have this problem?

I have an IMac from early 2009.  I've updated the OS X to Yosemite to 10.10.1 and since I've updated it, my system screensaver preferences WILL allow me to set the screensaver to IPhoto, but after a few minutes, it always reverts back to National Geographic pictures.  I tried putting ALL 18,000 of my pictures into a separate folder and choosing THAT folder for the screensaver, but again - it reverted back to the National Geographic pictures.
Is there any way I can set my screensaver preferences to IPhoto pictures?  Am I missing something?  Thanks for any input or suggestions.

  • TS1394 My pictures file is locked.  Don't have permission to access iPhoto library after Yosemite upgrade.  How do I dump the new Pictures file and restore the old?

Just upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1   iPhoto gives me a permissions error when I try to access the photo library.  When I track down the "Pictures" folders, the new "blessed" Pictures folder (with camera on the folder) is empty.  The previous Pictures folder, now a generic folder named "Pictures" is found at  MacHD>Users>Guest, with a no access red circle/white bar in the lower right corner.  Get info tells me that "Guest" has read/write privileges, but not me, logged on with administrator password.  Logging in as "Guest" does no good, the folder is no longer findable.  Disk Utility Permissions repair and restart, both as Guest and with the administrator password are fruitless.  I cannot alter the locked Pictures folder.  Will moving the "blessed" pictures folder to the trash and restarting possibly fix this? If not, then how?  Thanks.

Try holding alt or option key when starting iPhoto to choose a new Library.

  • Updating iPhoto library memory full, photos gone!!

Similar to the problem indicated in the response from: Muhamad Abdulkadir
in this thread: Pictures disappeared after installing Yosemite and new Iphoto. Why
When my iPhoto library (very large >1TB) was updating, it ran out of memory.  Unfortunately, something happened and on rebuild, all my photos were gone.
Looking in the "Old Masters" that Muhammad mentioned, I see the folder structure, but no photos.
Now under my "iPhoto Library Recovered Photos" folder, I have >1TB of data in that folder.  All the photos have a number appended to it (e.g. IMG_1469_14.JPG) in the example, the appended number is _14.
It sounds like this is all my photos, and would love to restore these photos, but can't seem to do it.  I do have a backup, but its offsite at the moment.  Any ideas?

    Thanks Larry!
You bring up a great point..  Based on your comment "..assure that you have adequate disk space available..."  It sounds like the upgrade copies the library and tries to upgrade it?  When not enough memory is available, it would generate the "memory full" message?  Somehow, when I saw it said memory full, I assumed it was RAM related and not storage..  If it is storage, then that makes sense, because I have just under 1TB available.
