Updated Safari 5.1.5 from 5.0.x (MacOS 10.6.8) prevents my credit union login from opening.

Found Flash plug-ins (newest) are the problem. Login works when I disable them and couple others. Is Apple fixing this?

Hi ...
Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin ...
Quit Safari.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Launch Safari From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
In case you are not aware, Apple is not responsible for "fixing" third party software.

• Updating Safari failed and froze computer

On attempting to update Safari to 3.1 (from 3.04) the download proceeded normally (recorded in the Software Update window). Clicking the Restart button to complete the installation brought up the Configuring Installation window, which showed that installation commenced but then quickly froze. Everything froze. When the machine is turned off, and then on again everything works except Safari (both old and new versions). The old version (3.04) still resides in Applications and in the dock, but it cannot be opened. I would be grateful for some advice.

Apparently trying to install a version of Safari that cannot be used with the version of OS X that's installed. Safari is installed by OS X. The only thing you can do is install an update for the version of Safari you currently have.
It sounds like you have OS system problems. Perhaps you need to consider reinstalling OS X before you start updating anything.

• Updated safari makes mac os 10.4.11 crash

I am running 10.4.11, on an intel macbook pro, and updated safari recently to the most recent version, 4.0.5 I believe.
As of yesterday, even just opening Safari brings my entire computer to a screeching halt. Not only does Safari not open, but when I attempt to quit it, or force quit it, the whole operating system freezes up. Spinning pinwheel and all.
Once I restart, I am now using a different browser, but I wish Safari would work as it used to! It doesn't seem possible to un-install it, but is there some way to find out if I've done something or unintentionally downloaded something that's causing this harm? Again, even trying to open Safari to check things out isn't an option.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Thank you Carolyn,
I can find a file, Safari.crash.log, though I'm not sure what to make of what is in it. This seems to be the most recent section:

• Flash Player Update disables "restore all windows from last session" in Safari on Mac

I am on Mac OS 10.9.5, using safari 7.1.2.  Adobe Flash Player Update loses all safari windows when after update the installer automatically opens safari and just opens flash player website; the "restore all windows from last session" is grayed out in history. The "reopen last closed window" is also grayed out. It has been happening ever since and happened again when I just installed Flash Player ver 16.0.0.257.
For all other normal working situation I can close safari and reopen and see that I can "restore all windows from last session" and there is no problem.  But on flash Player install (set on manual install), the problem is annoying and costs me a lot of time to restore one by one from history.  I do not think this is a Mac or a Safari issue, but will update to Mac Yosemite help if Adobe Flash Player is updated differently in that setup?
Please help.

Update: I called adobe flash player technical support phone number 1 877-587-1877.  They want $59 (warranty only 6 months) to fix this problem as they use a third party to solve this issue; they themselves provide no support.  Or buy the paid version.  They insist it is my network issue which I absolutely can not believe.
It is adobe Flash player update that forces reopening of safari and wracks the safari losing all windows from last session. That is not my network.  Adobe does not have a proper safari compatible flash player update.
Besides, this is a known problem at Adobe and they are not fixing it and want money to fix it one person at a time!  They also shared that 25% to 30% of the installations have this problem... wow!! and they still will not fix it in a general update!  I wonder if safari has a plug in update that can fix this?

In order to use the Safari Extensions Gallery you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6
See system requirements here:  http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

• Safari 3.0.4 (from 10.4.11 Update) Broken and I don't have PicLens

I just updated to 10.4.11 and with it came a BROKEN Safari. Some have posted that PicLens is the cause, but I don't have that installed on my PowerBook. Safari 3.0.4 is SLOW. The scrollbar constantly disappears. Pages won't load, including Apple sites, such as Support and Discussions. The program constantly freezes. I'm writing this in FireFox because Safari 3.0.4 is all but DEAD ON ARRIVAL. This very frustrating! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Apple's attention on this problem? I've seen posts about re-installing the previous version and dumping Safari 3. That is what I intend to do!

Safari 3.0.4 is SLOW
Safari 3.0.4 is the fastest browser I have ever seen.
I would suggest running the combo updater again, but before you do:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating a browser:
Disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on.

• HT1443 can't update to safari 5.1.7 from 5.0.5 on mac 10.6.8

Can't update safari from 5.0.5 to 5.1.7 on mac 10.6.8. Message says it can't because I already have newer version installed...?

Before reinstalling, it would be far less painful to  try applying or reapplying the 10.6.8 Combo Update which will bring bring a new 5.0.5, then run Security Update 2013-001, which should bring it to 5.1.8.
The Combo Update is not a reinstall, it will just replace missing or damaged files, from 10.6.0 through 10.6.8, including, in this case, the Safari 5.0.5.
You won't have the hassle of running Software Update a zillion times for other items.

• How do I update Safari from 1.3.2 to most current version?

I'm using OSX 10.3.9. I'm told I should update Safari from its current 1.3.2 (v312.6). I've updated software from Software Update successfully in the past, but a Safari update has never appeared in the Software Update dropdown menu. I downloaded Safari304BetaSecUpdateSetup.exe, but when I double click on the icon on the desktop, I get a message saying, "There is no default application specified to open the document Safari304BetaSecUpdateSetup.exe." So, how do I update Safari?
Thanks.

You are running the final version of Safari for panther 10.3.9.
If you want the latest safari 3.0.4 you will have to purchase Tiger and upgrade to at least 10.4.10. It will NOT run on the old panther.

You don't need to reinstall Leopard.
You can reinstall Safari from here >  Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard

• New york times updates - safari extension - not refreshing

New York Times Updates Safari Extension seems to have stopped updating it's info. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it, but it only added a couple of items from several days ago. Is this feed no longer viable? The version on the Safari extensions web site is 0.1, the same as always.

Try emptying the Safari cache more often.
You can do this from the Safari menu bar, click Safari / Empty Cache or Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
If emptying the cache didn't make a difference, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari.
Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
Restart your computer.

• Problems with UPDATING Safari 3.1.2

The software update checker indicates that a new version of Safari is available and version 3.1.2 should be updated; I download the update, but then get the message: "The update “Safari” can’t be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges."
Since I am the Administrator (and only user of this PowerBookG4, I wonder what is wrong with my "access privileges". I cannot recall having had updating issues before, I let automatic update run and install all updates periodically. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
Cheers,

Do you have any ideas why there were so many Permissions problems? How do they build up? What to do to avoid them in the first place?
No particular reason - except for downloads from Adobe, which always require a permission repair!
But they should be checked from time to time.
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but longer in Leopard.
Background information here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
and here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

• Software update, safari 3.0.2 do not work after installing mac os 10.4.11

Hi,
I've been upgrading a B&W G3 from 10.3.9 to 10.4.x and after installing from a 10.4 retail disc I used the software updater to download and install 10.4.11.  This worked fine, no errors.  But, both Software Update and Safari will not load at all, they are not even showing in the Force Quit dialog.  So I returned my system to 10.3.9 re-installed 10.4 and took an image of my installation.  I then proceeded to install a combo update, repair permissions (a task I had been performing previously), test software update and safari (which both worked), take an image of the installation for combos 10.4.3, 10.4.5, 10.4.8 and 10.4.10.  Everything worked fine.  Then I installed the stand alone 10.4.11 and was presented with faulty Software Update and Safari!!!
I've concluded there is definitely something wrong with 10.4.11 update where it be a stand alone or part of the combo update.
Is there a get around, to install the update and then amended some files, settings or something?
Thanks

Tiger 10.4.11 uses Safari 4.1.3.

General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system.
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• I need to unlock my ipad, lost passcode, I need  to know how to update safari so I can finish step 4 to back up.

I have a apple iPad mini I bought new last year in November.  I don't know much of anything else except it has 16GB. There aren't any other problems
besides me forgetting the passcode. I have tried to get help from apple support but seemed to go in circles.  It has been off for 2 weeks, they had me
update the iTunes and I tried to do the passcode but now it wants me to update Safari. I don't know where to find it.
I AM getting ready for step 4, but I don't know what that is. There was a back up or manual back up for all my data so I don't lose it, that is where I stopped,
just after step 3 was completed. I am completely lost.

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
