Updated security 002, now computer is freezing up

This morning I downloaded the security update 2004-002 for OS X. I repaired permissions both before and after the download.
I left the computer for a bit and when I came back I could not access the desktop in any way. I had to force quit and restart. I happened again later this afternoon. I can't think of any other thing I could have done which would be causing this problem.
Thank you for your help!

Dear Mr.Brody,
I am sorry that I did not respond to your recent reply to my freezing computer problem after downloading the security update, but I missed seeing it in my email, before I saw the others who responded.
Those other people provided some answers, but before I could use themthe problem of freezing seemed to resolve on it's own.
My answer to you is that our hard drive is 499.25 GB and it has 83.51 GB available.
The computer is no longer freezing, but I have a different problem. I have tried to burn a few cd"s with about 20 songs on them. When played on our cd player through the stereo system they fail after 3 songs play. The playlists will play on the nano through the stereo system and through the computer without failing, but not on the cd player. I tried some older cd's I had  burned a month ago and they work just fine on the cd player.
All this has happened since the security download. I have not tried to do a restore from the backup. My husband has reservations about that. Also I saw that someone else had tried that and it did not work for them.
Thanks for your help in advance.

  • Just installed security update 2014-002, now Itunes will not open. Have rstrated but no change, need help to fix, please

Just installed security update 2014-002, now Itunes will not open, I have rebooted twice with no effect, I don't know what else to do to get my itunes back. Need help please

Believe I've firxed my problem, at least, ITunes is now working again. I followed the information provided from a couple of posts on this thread, (1) re restarting with command-s held down; did it twice, made no differerence; (2) manually re-installed the Security update; no difference; each time restarting, no effect; (3) shutdown the computer; I did for 35 minutes, upon restart, ITunes is back to normal, seems to be working fine. Turning the computer off must clear the cache?

I think my computer is acting normal besides that and i purchased this mac only a few months ago. How do i fix this or make it go back to normal?

  • Trying to update to Lion and computer keeps freezing.

I have purchased Lion and it has "downloaded" but when I press the icon so I can actually follow through on the change-over, I get a rainbow wheel which after a few seconds freezes (the whole screen freezes). I have to hold the power in order to shut it down; not sure what to do. Any help would be nice, many thanks!

Before trying to install Lion with the installer, it would be a good idea to navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot drive. Repair the drive until there is nothing left to repair. Also check that SMART is verified.
If there are errors that Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need to address these before installing Lion. A stronger utility like Disk warrior may be able to repair them, or possibly you may want to replace your hard drive if it has started to go south.
It's always a good idea to immediately repair your drive if you have had to force quit.
It's just a guess, but I suspect there is something about your hard drive that Lion doesn't like, and this is why you are getting the freeze.
    Good luck!

  • After Security update 2006-002, RAM is halved

    Hi,
Right after applying the Security Update 2006-002, I experienced a freeze upon wake-up from sleep. And a general application slowdown.
A fleeting look past the About this Mac window surprisingly revealed that the system now identifies the two additional (trusty for 8 months or so) OWC 1GB RAM modules as 512kb only. Startup memory test is reported as failed - But the modules are still listed as OK.)
I tried putting the modules in another bank. This works, after restart memory is identified correctly and system breezes. Unfortunately, another restart brings things back to the original, 1.5GB state.
Resetting nvram (reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all) in OF also mostly has the same effect: First restart restores things back to normal, second restart brings the problem back.
Having read about the recent PB problems where a system update aparently disabled one memory slot, something tells me it's not the RAM modules themselves. (Yes, they check out fine in memory tests.)
    Any ideas?
    Best,
    Ben

Problem disappeared after I caved in and bought new RAM (Kingston Value Ram) as recomended by / from a local dealer. I am inclined to think this in fact was a defect in the RAM modules themselves, OWC has issued a RMA on them and I'm sending them back. Thanks!

I can not load ANY 3rd party applications after this update.  It took my machine 10-15 to boot up and after I finally got to the desktop, I can only open Apple apps.  Applications like MS Office, Adobe Reader, Google Chrome are ALL crashing and loading error messages.  Below is the first part of the kernel panic:

  • Ran Security Update 2015-002 Version 1.0 now I cant find my apps or view files under my home folder

I just updated my system with the Security Update 2015-002 and now I cant find any of my applications that were located in my applications folders, even when I go to the folder with my name it will not show any folders. Where did all my stuff go?

    Permission Issues - Troubleshooting
You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Security Update 2008-002 failed Software update install, now absent in SU

So, I used Software Update to download and install Security Update 2008-002, but at after downloaded and going through install process, it never completed. I think it never even reached the optimizing part. So, I forced quit Software update. Backed up everything before restarting. No issues restarting at all, but when I rerun software update, Security Update 2008-002 does not show up. Also, it does not appear in the receipts folder either. You can still manually download it however. I wonder if Apple was pulling it this morning? I can't figure out, since I see no evidence of it being installed, why it doens't show back up.

Yep, looked for that too. Nothing. I have noticed, in trying to download manually, that I get an "internal error" from Apple downloads a few times before actually getting it to download.
When I origianlly tried to use software update, it never made it past installing to optimizing. Normally, after optimizing, you have to restart for the updated software to take effect. Since it stalled out and just hung, I force quited Software Update. I wonder if they is why no reciept package shows, or, did it just really not install. Odd thing is, I know shockwave permissions differed after I restarted. So,either it's me, or Apple pulled it or is having issues.
I have never had a software update stall out before. ever.
Also, does not show up in Software update as installed either, but doesn't show up as available.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
There are other things that need attention:

  • Security update 2014-002 and boot up time

    Hi all,
After installing the Security Update 2014-002, my Mac Pro is taking over 10 minutes to start. I get a grey screen and eventually the Apple logo appears.
I've unplugged everything from the computer and repair permissions already. I've tried to boot in recovery mode, but it never seems to start (waiting on the grey screen for over 20 minutes while my fingers are on the keys isn't a fun time).
    Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

  • HT6207 Macbook Pro getting stuck after security update 2014-002

After installing this security update, my mac is acting up, sometimes I am getting a split screen on safari sometimes and then the sometimes computer is hanging up and also when I am using non apple softwares like vlc player or yahoo messenger the mac hangs up? Is it normal?

The VPN connection to this specific servcie provider has worked for me with previous MacOS and with 10.9. It now fails and the only change to my Macs are that I loaded the Security Update 2014-002 in the of April. I checked by adding the exactly same VPN connection definition to a 10.6 Mac and connected from the same LAN. This succeeded. Thus I suspect the Security Update, or that there is some paramater that now needs to be defined/changed.

  • Problems with Security Update 2006-002

    Hi there,
I have problems with latest security update. I do not know what went wrong, but after installing "Security Update 2006-002 (PowerPC)" (1.0) on 2006-03-14 15:52:40 +0100: with Software Update from Tiger, my desktop (and probably not only desktop) is damaged.
The most visible thing is that all .html and .htm documents on my desktop does not have Safari icon anymore, they have some 'blank' icon and doubleclick on them DOES NOT start-up Safari, why?
See here on the screenshot: http://www.jirkacech.com/files/Tiger-problemy-screeshot.png
note blank "apple - start.webarchive" also the Safari itself have somehow damaged icon, to same blank thing with triangle, possibly some 'generic app' or 'default.app' icon. It sits in the dock on 5th from left...(dont worry about real safari icon, that's newly added by me)
Also, on, second screenshot, http://www.jirkacech.com/files/Tiger-problemy-2.png you see that safari itself have some strange icon.
I am getting crazy, since I do not know what else is broken by last update.
I have tryed to repair permissions at least 3x, and also run update_prebindings and reboot, delete all system and user caches, and reboot.
Whole issue is system-wide, not only for one user.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.33 GHz, 512 MB, 12-inch

The first thing you can try, if this is limited only to Safari icons, is to select on such icon, then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select Safari from the dropdown menu as the default app. Then click on the Change All button.
If this doesn't resolve the problem or if the problem extends to other appicons as well, then you may have some disk corruption resulting from not repairing the hard drive and permissions before doing the update. I suggest you do that:
Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • External drives went missing after Security Update 2015-002

    I'm running late 2009 iMac 27" with up-to-date Mavericks (10.9.5).
I just ran the Security Update 2015-002 and now:
    - my external Firewrie drive won't show up (WD MyBook Studio II 2TB)
    - my external USB drive won't show up (WD MyBook Studio 1TB)
Both drives show up perfectly on another Mac (with Yosemite). Just not on this one.
Tried the usual, repaired permissions, reset pram, etc.
Any help would be great please

    Try resetting the SMC:
    Reset SMC
Run each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
    Reset the SMC
as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait five seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
FWIW, this reset also works for tripped overload protection on the USB and FireWire ports.
