Updated to 10.4.5 Wait to back up??
Hi All,
This is possibly a goofy question, but I'll ask it anyway. I just updated (Friday the 17th) to 10.4.5 and everything is working fine. I took a minute to repair the permissions on the volume (before and after the update, just 'cause it only takes a second), and used the update from "Software Update" as I was just updating from 10.4.4. Anyway, here's the real question:
Since it appears that some people are having problems that they seem to think are related to 10.4.5, do you think that it might be a good idea for me to hold off on making a bootable clone of my drive for awhile (say, a week)to make sure that everything works well before I replace the clone on my external HD in favor of the new incarnation?
I have a 250 GB firewire drive (it's a LaCie), so there is plenty of room on there, I guess that in theory I could just make a clone of 10.4.5 in another partition and have them both available in case something goes haywire on my internal drive, and I don't want to trust the new clone either. But that sort-of seems like overkill (paranoia?) to me, so I thought that I would appeal to the high priests and priestesses of OS X before making a move.
I usually back everything up on Sundays, but I think that I can safely wait for some advice this week.
TIA for any insights,
Kent
In my opinion I wouldn't. However I am not a very paranoid person about that kind of stuff. I have been using Mac's for years and never had a software related crash. I think that the update to 10.4.5 is pretty reliable, and I haven't heard of any major problems that it causes. However on the off chance that something did happen, it's better to be safe than sorry. A week waiting probably wouldn't hurt.

I have iphone4. I tried 2 update some applications when I was in USA, updates installation were not complete. Coming back 2 my country Egypt, I am unable to complete the installation of the update; it is still waiting. Is there a way 2 complete installation other than deleting the application that contains important data?

When I try to update to iOS5, iTunes gets stuck on "Backing Up" its been there for hours and it barely moves. It finished backing up one then it went to a "Extracting Software" on the iTunes status bar up top and then it gave me an error saying something along the lines of "There was an error with the server" and back to square 1. Ive been trying since the morning and same problem. Always stuck on the backup, help?
You may have lost your connection to the apple server or connection with your itunes library.
1) You will need to shutdown Itunes and disconnect your iphone from the USB cable.
2) Reconnect your Iphone to the usb cable, wait for the device to be recognised and or drivers to be installed.
3) once all ok, your itunes should automatically open up/connect (if you have this setting set on), otherwise double click your itunes icon on your desktop.
4) once all sychronised and connected. go to Summary tab and UPDATE your iphone again.
Hope this works for you, as this happend to me and tried the above steps and wala!!! all good.
If the above still fails, restart your pc/apple and turn off/on your modem and then try again.
this normally happens if your connection from your device to the itunes hangs or looses its connection, or have a bad connection to the internet / apple server.
in windows the RPC Locator is normally the cause of this, in apple i have no idea (as im not an apply user).
Give it a shot!

Support problem. The adviser tried to diagnose the failure of an application called JOTNOT PRO to update. He said he'd phone back at 8pm. I pick up his call at 8pm. Electronic voice: thank you for calling apple. We are now closed" So now I have 2 problems: the adviser had got me to reset so bye bye wifi passwords and settings. And then when he phones back as we agreed he's not actually on the phone, it's just a voice saying Apple Support is now closed! What on earth is going on at apple support I wonder.
Anyway, the original problem: an application called JotNot Pro fails to update. The error message says something like "you cannot update this cos either you bought it with a different Apple ID or somebody else bought it."
Neither applies. Can anybody help?
PS. This is my first approach to the support community so please bear with me!
WilliamYou might have better luck contacting the app's support or developers.

I have an iPhone 3gs and will be getting a new iPhone 4s. Once I have updated my existing 3gs with iCloud and backed up to my computer, will I be able to transfer my existing data to my new 4s using iCloud or will I need to do this from my iMac.
ThanksThe Apple genius at the Apple store told me this would work. It failed. Basically, updating your iPhone 3GS to iOS5 wipes your 3GS of its data so you can't really do this. Some data worked. Music, photos etc didn't work at all.
I suggest avoiding iCloud completely for a few weeks until Apple gets it working. -
My iphone 5S is stuck on a screen displaying the itunes symbol and a charging cable. I tried connecting it to itunes and updating it to the new software, and backing it up but it keeps saying unknown error 4005, Also when I first tried backing up my phone on my computer it would begin the processes then half way through it would say IPHONE has been disconnected, now it won't recognize it or anything. what can i do? This is a brand new phone!!!
Hello jraff21,
I was able to locate a support article for the error you mentioned. The following steps may help you get your device back to working order:
iOS: Restore errors 4005, 4013, and 4014 - Apple Support
You may see one of these messages if the device unexpectedly disconnects during the update or restore or iTunes couldn't tell the device to go to the restore state.
The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4005).
The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4013).
The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4014).
Try these steps to resolve the issue:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Restart your computer.
Make sure your computer is up to date. If an update requires a restart, check for updates again after you restart.
Restore using another USB cable.
Learn more about updating OS X.
Learn more about updating Windows.
Restore your device on another computer.
If you continue to see error 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your device, contact Apple for support.
Learn more about other update and restore errors.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

I have several apps that are not updating, they are stuck saying "waiting".
Are you downloading music?
Check by going to iTunes (on iDevice) > downloads and then remove the one that is trying to download, this will then make the others download and when they are finished, the apps will update/install -

After trying to update iBook application stays in waiting state
After Update iBook app, stays in waiting state . Will not open or able to delete.
Try this first ...tap the "waiting" icon and see if you can pause it. If it does pause, then tap it again and see if it will resume. If that works, repeat the same steps for each "waiting" icon.
If that didn't work, try this ....Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. -
I recently updated my iPad and when I went back to read a book that I had purchased I'm getting error messages and whole chapters are missing. I tried re-syncing with my mac book and nothing changed. Any help to restore my book completely?
Try a system reset. It's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If that doesn't work, you'll need to do a time-consuming "Restore." -
