Updated to 10.6.6 - Airport No Longer Works

I have a Black Macbook from about 2-3 years ago. It's been great throughout it's lifespan so far with hardly any errors and the errors I have encountered were always minimal and had quick fixes. That was until this recent update to 10.6.6.
Once I updated it, I could no longer connect wirelessly, anywhere. When I first select the airport drop down from the toolbar the first time I would see the local network/s and be able to select one. However right after selecting one it would give me a connection timeout and then the networks would completely disappear from the network selection area.
I hadn't really thought it was because of the update, I thought maybe I accidentally changed a setting or something around those lines. Well I have a friend that wants to buy my MacBook once I can upgrade (MBP). So I decided I'd just totally reset the MacBook back to the factory settings. I erased the Macintosh HD and installed Snow Leopard. Everything was perfectly fine and it was working just like new. So after moving over my music, movies and a few apps I decided I'd update it back to 10.6.6. Once I updated it, the Airport acted just as it did before (this is how I found out it was the update that screwed up the airport).
Are there any fixes? The furthest backup I have is from after the update (I had to get a new HDD because my other one crapped out). I have all my files, disks for apps, etc, etc so I'm not worried about manually moving / installing files, etc. I'm going to reset my MacBook back to factory settings tonight again and simply not update it. However if there are any fixes to this problem I'd greatly appreciate it, I don't want to be stuck in 10.6.5.

There are a lot of variables to a network problem.
There are also many threads of varying degrees of problems on here I've been reading over the past week about 10.6.6 having DHCP drops, slow speeds, all the way to this one, of no connection at all.
Everyone has the same solution, for sure...downgrade. If you want a 100% absolute (barring a hardware failure, of course), that is your answer.
Had you not downgraded, a guy in the UK went through just about every single troubleshooting thing I could think of/find in this thread here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2710675
The only thing that finally worked for him was OnyX, which to me means it's a preference or cache file somewhere that they know about, and I didn't. Which is why I'm recommending running that in this thread first, before all of the other things I suggested he try.

I have an older ipod...ever since I updated the itunes software my ipod no longer works in my car.  my car is a 2013 mercedes E350.  Is there a way to go back to an older version of the itunes software?

If it's an older iPod, its software is not being updated by Apple.  So, I don't see how updating iTunes would make the iPod not work with the car's audio system, since iTunes just updates the song files (not how the iPod operates).
Does the iPod work by itself (play songs), when disconnected from the computer and iTunes?

What version of iPhoto do you have?  With Yosemite you must be running iPhoto 9.6.1 which is a available from the App Store.  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll have to download and apply the  iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 to the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.6.1. It'll be located in the Applications/Utilities folder after downloading.
    Now for your system:
    Startup Items: ℹ️
        ChmodBPF: Path: /Library/StartupItems/ChmodBPF
Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite
Either remove this or update it so it's compatible with Yosemite.
Get rid of the antivirus software as rkaufmann87 mentioned.  It's not needed.

Don't know what this is for.  There was no info on Google about it so remove it.
Currently you're not having any memory problems since your Page-outs are essentially non existent. You can check it as you work with Activity Monitor.

As long as the memory pressure is in the green and constant and you're not seeing a lot of SWODs you shouldn't be concerned about the memory.  Of course increasing memory will nearly always improve general system and application performance. But you didn't mention slowness as part of your problem.

  • HT1338 I just uploaded an update to Mountain Lion today mail no longer works

I just uploaded an update to Mountain Lion today mail no longer works.

After I ran theupdate yesterday I got a message that the update did not complete. When I tried to run mail I got a error message that mail could not run. When I rebooted and tried mail again I got the same error. I tried to load the last mail update from the apple store, but could not run it because it was unsigned.

  • After updating to Lion my external monitor no longer works!

I used a external lcd tv to use split screen on my Macbook Pro. After updating to Lion this week it no longer works. First I thought it was my HDMI adapter but I have replaced it and nothing is still working. I've read that people using more than one problem have been having issues but i just have the one external monitor. Help Please!

I found a discussion thread here which seems to do the trick.  Like you I've authorized, de-authorized etc, but renaming the files seemed to be the only thing that worked.  Here's the detail:

  • Airport no longer works after update.

I occasionally use my imac as a base station to connect a laptop to the internet via airport. Since installing the recent security updates my laptop can no longer see a network (I also connect via a pda and this no longer works either).
Airport indicates full signal strength but clearly there is no network.
Tried deleting prefs but still wont work.

    Hi there BDAqua...
I used this Pacifist software and followed instructions on this thread, rebooted, nothing seemed to change. Repaired permissions, nothing changed... I thought, oh well! Maybe I'll go to my local (Warsaw Poland) Apple repair centre.
Sadly, I put my computer to sleep, about an hour later, opened it up with ethernet cable attached for internet, and noticed the wireless icon was now dark... lo and behold, clicked on it and my network was checked (this after having had my password "rejected" a million times before) and ... I carefully slipped the ethernet cable out of the socket... and I was still connected.
So my wireless is working again, since doing all that stuff (back to prior firmware version) but for the life of me I don't know why, since it didn't seem to be fixed immediately after all that tinkering and rebooting! Any thoughts?? Did I actually do something that fixed it (must be, since I finally fooled around with it after almost 3 weeks of no wireless) or was this just random??
This is far too un-Apple-ish, by the way! I was used to this with PCs, but first time I've ever had to get so technical with my Mac!

  • Airport no longer working after latest updates

After my latest software updates, the Airport on my 13" Macbook is no longer working.
I can connect to networks and can get full signal from the wireless router in my home, yet none of my browsers can actually connect to the internet.
I've tried multiple wireless connections and none function properly. Suggestions?
I'm currently connected directly to my NETGEAR router via ethernet

    Experiencing similar issue.
Wired works forever without any issue. Wireless (airport) works for a while (random 2-60 minutes, could be related to data volume) then gets stuck. At that point getting back to wire (without reseting the airport AP) solves it. Also, cycling the airport client (disable/enable) gets it to work for a few minutes... until it gets stuck again. Other devices (iPhone, iPod touch) connected to the same airport AP do get access while the macbook is stuck.
Thought this could be 11n related since the macbook is the only device running 11n. However, while wireless http/web access is stuck on the macbook one can still perform ftp connections (bit no file transfer as such), pings and/or access the time machine configuration (some of this seems to be randomly working) from that macbook. Not sure whether 11n handles short bursts and large bursts differently?
Finally, the behaviour is the same whether using Safari or Firefox and relaunching eitehr app does not solve it.
    Clueless for now.

Remove Office 2008 for Mac using Microsoft deinstall procedure. Reinstall Office 2008 for Mac.  If there are updates, apply them. Using Disk Utility, verify/repair permissions on your boot drive.
Does Office for Mac 2008 now work correctly? If not, you may want to repeat the above first sentence, and then update to Office for Mac 2011, and apply the latest (14.4.8) update which has Yosemite fixes.

  • I have just installed iOS7 and now is my Airport no longer working. Very irritating. Has anybody an answer to this problem ?

Just installed iOS7 and now my Airport express is no longer working. Very frustrating. Who has a solution to this problem.

I'm curious what's happening for others with Airport Express devices that aren't working. In my case, it's simply now impossible to get sound coming out of it. All my devices and computers initially THINK it should work - they all show the Airport Express. But when I try to play, it doesn't work, with slightly varying responses:
iPhone 5 and iPad 2, both on iOS7: if I choose the Airport Express, they continue to play as if through the Airport for about 20 seconds (with progress along the little progress/scrub bar), and then just stop playing. No error message or anything.
On my computer, through iTunes 11.1: it thinks for a while, with the "Connecting to ___'s Airport Express" thing going at the top of the screen, until I get the "An error occurred while connecting to the airplay device ... the network connection timed out" message. The little chevron (?) in the upper left side, that lets us "Choose which speakers to use", becomes orange rather than blue, and when I click on that, the Airport Express listing now has an exclamation mark inside a warning sign.
On an iPhone 4, with iOS6: basically the same as with the iOS7 devices. It seems to "think" it's playing through the Aiport Express, and then after about 30 seconds just reverts to the iPhone speaker and stops playing, with no error message.
Note that through all this the Airport Express has its green light and seems to think it's working fine, with an "Excellent" connection, according to the Airport Utility.
I've tried turning basically everything off and on; everything is as up to date as I can make it, except that iPhone 4; I've forgotten and added networks; I've reset network settings; I've added and taken away a password from the Airport Express Airplay speakers (because, hey, why not). I'm not sure what else there even is to do: maybe tomorrow I'll head in to an apple store and see if I can use the AirPlay from my iPhone to play on one of their Airport Expresses? If they even have any set up?
Outside chance of the cause - could my wifi network somehow be confused because it's dealing with both iOS6 and iOS7? Does that make any sense at all? (Not that my wife is going to be the least bit eager to upgrade to iOS7 after hearing me swear profusely over the past couple of days!)

  • I updated the IOS and my phone no longer works, it just displays the Apple logo and eventually dies. Any suggestions?

I updated my IOS and now my phone no longer works. All I get is the Apple logobuntil the battery dies. Any suggestions?

Charge the battery for several hours.  Then reset by holding the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
If you then see the USB cable and an iTunes display, follow the direction and plug your iPhone into iTunes.

  • The spry pop-up menu I built in Adobe Dreamweaver worked fine in my old Firefox, I updated Firefox today and the menu no longer works--despite disabling the pop-up blocker in Firefox preferences...what's the problem??? I need the menu to work!!!

I built a new pop-up menu for my website using Spry in Adobe Dreamweaver. Because of some differences in .HTML and .XHTML
it took me days to get it right. I tested every variation in Firefox until it worked perfectly. Today, I installed the newest version of Firefox and now the pop-up no longer works. I changed the preferences in Firefox to disable to pop-up blocker and it STILL DOESN'T WORK...although an older style of pop-up menu (menu machine) which is no longer supported by Adobe, DOES WORK.
    HELP!!! THIS IS IMPORTANT.

OP is using CS3 and the menu blog is talking about the menus
    in earlier
versions of FW, so *most* of the points made in the blog
    don't apply.
That's not to say that using CS3 pop-up menus is a *good*
    thing....

  • Airport no longer working after firmware update

Before i get to my question, i think that it is necessary to give a bit of background as to why i have set my network up the way i have.
I recently moved in with my girlfriend and brought my broadband package with me as i would have to pay a fee to cancel my contract within the contract period.
This would be all well and good except that in the new location, the service provider can only supply broadband via an ADSL phone line (provided by a seperate telephone company) furthermore they (Virgin Media - i'm gonna name names) provide a cheap USB only modem - which in turn is only compatible with PPC Macs.
Fine for me, but not so great for my girlfriend who has an Intel Mac Mini and not so great for my new Airport Extreme which of course requires a modem with an ethernet connection.
Bearing in mind that it's just after Christmas and i can't afford to just run out and buy an ethernet modem or change my ISP - i thought that i would try something out.
With the USB modem connected to my old PPC G4 i then connected the ethernet cable (that i had connecting our two Macs allowing them to share the internet connection) - from my G4 to the WAN port on the Airport...
Now i'm a real networking newbie so i was a little suprised when suddenly and effortlessly i had created a wireless network that the Mac Mini and our iPod Touches could see and use. I set up security etc and all was well and good...for two days.
Then Airport received a firmware update and now it doesn't work and resetting the Airport doesn't help.
So now i have to get my hands dirty and like i say, i know jack about networks or the terminology.
With this configuration - and obviously we know that it can work (somehow!)
should i be in bridge mode or sharing a single IP address? and just how am i connecting to the internet. Static IP address/DHCP - PPPoE? I know what these abbreviations stand for but i don't know what they mean.
In the course of 'playing around' with the settings i have seen a message saying that Airport has an invalid I.P. address - why is it invalid and is that only because of something that i have changed or is that the route of the problem?
All the machines can see each other and the only clue i can provide is this log extract.
    Jan 19 01:05:31 Severity:5 Initialized (firmware 7.2.1).

    ...and so on.
I'm hoping that some networking guru is reading this and can provide me with a few pointers.
Can anyone help? I've been struggling with this for days now.
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve.

Your setup is convoluted, but it should work. A few comments:
    1. The base station should be configured to get an IP address using DHCP, which it will get from your PPC which (with internet connection sharing turned on) is now acting as a DHCP server.
    2. The base station should be configured in bridge mode, since your PPC (with intenet connection sharing turned on) is now acting as a router.
    3. I suggest you should turn off the network firewall on the PPC as long as your are running this sort of setup. Not ideal, but it will prevent all sorts of connectivity problems between the internet and everything downstream of your PPC's ethernet port.
