Updated to 3.1 & All Contacts Disappeared

HELP... how can I restore without syncing. Too many contacts not backed up! Thanks, in advance.

Basically , the answer is "no kidding". take a look at all the problems 3.1 has caused.
Well, you dont give much info to work from.
If you are syncing with Outlook, AND you have not overwritten the pc with the phone stuff - here is what i did:
Fixed all the broken stuff in outlook (double entries and such), then re-synced BUT checked the box at the bottom of the summary page that tells the system to replace all the iPhone contacts with what is on the machine.
PIA , but it worked ok.
You might be able to get it back from your last sync and back up.

  • All contacts disappeared on iPhone - Can't restore from backup, iCloud now gone too

Just sitting and watching TV and having some minor text conversations on my phone (5S).. Next thing I know a message pops up without a name and the +1 area code an number.. The message is from the same person and number I was just texting. Strange I thought.. Pulled up my contacts and "no contacts" is displayed. Checked my settings.. iCloud contacts are still enabled.. reset my phone.. reset network settings.. nothing helped.. I thought, no big deal.. I backup every night.
First time restoring from backup, I saw all the contacts there and thought i was in the clear.. 10 seconds later, they disappear before my eyes! Getting very frustrated i tried an older backup. They don't even show up. I log into iCloud on my laptop and they are there for 2-3 seconds and disappear.
I've been using iPhone's since the original and have the new phone every year.. I pretty good with these phones, but this has me stumped/very frustrated. Has anyone experienced this or found a solution? I'm out all my contacts from the last 8 years.. Thinking I never had to worry because I've backed up!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!
    Ryan

I don't think that is the case.. I noticed they were there when I would first complete a restore from backup but as soon as my apps started loading they would disappear again.
I got them back by immediately turning on airplane mode as soon as I completed the restore. I the turned off iCloud sync and selected keep contacts on this phone. turned iCloud back on and selected merge contacts.
First time I tried that it worked for a minute until the apps started to update again, I believe it might have been WhatsApp, then, what do you know, contacts gone again. I repeated the process and, this time, I deleted all my apps. Seems to be working ok now. All contacts have stayed.
Is it possible that an auto update for an app that accesses your contacts could have a bug that does this? Whatever it was, I am very glad I got them back.

  • Almost all contacts disappeared on iPad

I used Contact Cleaner to remove duplicates in my Address Book, a problem created long ago with sync problems with Outlook.
A subsequent sync with my iPhone went OK, but the sync with my iPad deleted most contacts, leaving only one each for a few of the letters of the alphabet.
I am not using iCloud because I was burned by the password fiasco way back when with the introduction of iOS 6.  I have been successfully syncing calendars, contacts, podcasts, and music up to about three weeks ago.
For some reason I had Sync Contacts in iTunes unchecked for my iPad, but even checking Sync Contacts for all contacts does not restore contacts from my Address Book.
Oops!  I also had Sync Contacts unchecked in iTunes for my iPhone.  When I checked it and set All Contacts, on syncing I lost almost every contact on my iPhone.
I also tried Replace information in the Advanced section.  On the next sync, no information was replaced.
The only place that I could switch on Contacts was from a mail account.  Nowhere could I find a place to switch on Apple's Address Book.
Is this one of the marvelous fixes to iOS 7.0.4?

It looks like Apple jumped the gun on not syncing contacts in iOS 7.0.4.
"Sync contacts from your computer or Yahoo!: In iTunes on your computer, turn on contact syncing in the device info pane. For information, see iTunes Help."
From iPhone User Guide For iOS 7 (October 2013)
"You can use iTunes to sync the contacts, calendars, notes, Safari bookmarks, and email account information on your computer with your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. iTunes also syncs this information from your device to your computer—for example, if you add contacts on your iPad, syncing adds those contacts to Contacts on your computer (or Address Book, in some versions of OS X).
"When you sync, iTunes determines whether your device or your computer contains the most recent information, and lets you choose the information you want to sync.
"Note:  These instructions apply only if you use OS X v.10.8.5 or earlier. If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud."
From iTunes Help, "Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad", accessed 2013-11-26
Since I am still running OS X 10.7, iOS 7 should still sync my contacts through Wi-Fi or USB cable.
This dictum does ignore people who have a Mac and an iPhone but no home internet access.  I know of such people.  Suppose I receive a letter and put the contact info in my Mac.  I then write a paper response and use a program like Easy Envelopes to print the envelope (a lot neater than my handwriting).  Easy Envelopes takes the info from my Address Book.  Now I go out with my iPhone a few days later but without my Mac and decide to follow up the letter with a phone call.  Unless I had hand-copied the phone number, it won't be on my cell phone.  This is even more problematic if I have an iMac rather than a laptop.
As for the password fiasco, if I remember correctly, it was when iOS 6 was introduced and iCloud was offered.  If a person forgot their password, they couldn't get a new password for the ID they used.  They had to use another ID.  I think it finally settled out somehow.  I am not sure of my password for iCloud, it is already in my iPhone/iPad settings and I successfully turned on iCloud syncing of my Address Book and the Contacts.  I hope it is now that linked to my Apple ID; that password I know.
I also hope that none of my information raises a red flag with the NSA or that iCloud doesn't go down when I need it the most.  Or even my local DSL service!  Which has happened!

  • All Contacts disappear from iPhone -- temporarily

I have a recurring problem with my iPhone which occurred under 3.0 and now under 3.1, and even after a "restore as new phone" and replacement of the SIM card: occasionally, I'll go into the iPhone Contacts app and it will be empty -- no contacts at all, even if they were there minutes earlier. They eventually reappear after a reboot (without my doing any kind of "restore" -- I sync my contacts wirelessly over MobileMe). Yesterday, for example, I opened up my Contacts app to make a call; the contacts were all there, and I tapped on a particular contact to call him, and instead of his contact details being displayed, all my contacts disappeared. i rebooted and they reappeared.
I have asked about this at the Genius Bar and the Genius said it was happening because I was in an area with no cell signal, and that since I sync wirelessly with MobileMe, my contacts will disappear when I have no cell signal. However, that doesn't make sense, since my contacts do not disappear when I put the iPhone into Airplane Mode (in which case by definition there is no signal) or when the phone actually displays "No Signal" at the top of the screen. And when it happened yesterday, I had 5 bars in the signal display.
    So I have several questions:
    (a) has anyone else experienced this?
    (b) does anyone have any ideas on solving it?
    (c) does anyone think the Genius Bar explanation makes sense?

I am facing the same problem. my Contacts names disappear . Phone number is what just remains.
However I do not think it is a Genius Problem. OR it is not even a problem of no cell phone coverage.
Problems like these are usually OS Problems. So I think 3.1 is with full of bugs.
    2) I dont know how to solve it. looking for soultion

  • Why did all contacts disappear when I turned on iCloud?

Yesterday I turned on iCloud for my contact info, and when I tried to access my contacts some hours later, discovered that all my contacts disappeared from my iPhone4.
When I turned off iCloud for my contacts (iCloud is still on for other stuff) my contacts immediately reappeared.
    What gives?

Thanks for the advice, but after this and other hassles, I've decided to not use iCloud in any way.  I'm sticking with the old way of syncing my iphone via the cable and iTunes as well.  Suits me just fine.
Other than not providing a detailed manual on iOS5 in general, and iCloud in particular, I'm not blaming Apple here.  I used to be on top of my Mac and Apple devices, but somewhere along the road I got left behind, and I just don't have the time anymore to catch up, especially when that means doing so by trial and error.
I'm still an avid fanboy of my Apple computer, iPhone and recently Apple TV.  I'm sure iCloud is wonderful, but having never successfully used it, I don't miss it.
    Thanks again.

  • All contacts disappeared on 5310

I went into Phonebook > copy contacts > from phone to SIM, because I wanted all my contacts on my SIM card. Suddenly my phone, Xpress Music 5310, turned off and when I turned it back on all of my numbers were gone!! Ive tried copying all contacts from SIM to phone, from phone to SIM, everything. They're gone Does anyone know something else I can try?

The same thing happened to my phone. After fretting and attempting to fix the issue, I went to the T-Mobile store, where a friend of mine works. Trying to figure it out himself, he performed a 'restore to factory settings' (the 2nd factory settings option.) It worked!! I've got all my contacts back and they are in alphabetical order. There were a couple of contacts that are listed twice, but no biggie. I felt like an idiot, as I was going to try that myself, but was not sure if it would have interfered wit the sim or not. Try it, if you have not done so. Hope it works for you!! :-)

  • All contacts disappeared from my iphone when trying to use icloud. What happened?

In order to set up Groups, I was advised to install CopyTrans (free version).
I have also set up and use ICoud.com through my PC to make Groups and arrange contacts.
But now I have NO contacts in my iPhone.  When I close the Contacts App and reopen it, some appear. But when I touch 'Groups' they all disappear again.
How do I access all 700 contacts stored on iCould?
When I Synch with my PC (which uses Outlook) all those 500 contacts are added AGAIN and AGAIN forcing me to delete duplicates constantly.
And then when I turn on the iPhone and touch Groups - they disappear again.
I switched from BlackBerry - was this a mistake?

Suggest you consider using an app to back up your contacts.  This will allow you to easily restore them if this happens again.  One I can recommend is My Contacts Backup Pro, although I'm sure there are others that work as well.  The app will back up your contacts as a vCard attachment to an email.  Send the email to yourself and save either the email or the attachment.  If you ever need to restore your contacts you can just tap the attachment to import them back to your phone.
Then, as mentioned in the other post, try saving your photo stream photos to your camera roll, delete the iCloud account, provide your password and choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (your data will still be in iCloud), then sign back in.  Hopefully it won't happen again after that.

  • Lost all contacts after iOS 4.3 update [iPhone 4]

The description above pretty much tells it all. All contacts missing from iPhone 4 after update to iOS 4.3.
All music, calendar, photos, voicemails are still there. And the strange thing (to me) is that the numbers are still there under "recent" and "favorites", just not the contact names to associate them with.
Backup is useless, as it is from after the update [why is there only one backup? That is useless, and you can't seem to force backups with date stamps].
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I had the same experience as RandyCPU, updated to 4.3 yesterday, all contacts disappeared but all other information still there, photos, texts, recent calls but no names etc. I too found that my phone was not backing up contacts and I only had the info from my changeover to the iphone4 in December. I asked if I could set it to back-up on syncing and was told it did it automatically but this is obviously not the case, I was then told that I would have to do it manually. Apple could only suggest restoring the December back-up but I have now lost everything loaded on the phone since then, they also advised that I was the only example of this problem. Very unhappy and still no idea why it happened.

  • Contacts disappear after updating to IOS 7

    Hello,
iam using iphone 4s and after i updated to ios 7 all the contacts has disappear, even if i restore them from the back up or wrote them again the same thing happen always after i period of time.
i had read some topics about the same problem that happened after updating to IOS 5 and 6 but all the solutions didn't worked with my iphone, please i need your help !

I am having same problem and if you loose 450 contacts its maddening enough to consider changing to another platform.
In my case iPhone 4S - problems started after iOS7 update - on the computer all contacts appear under header iCloud (there is no longer an option of "On my Mac" that I seem to remember from earlier times).
My phone cannot access the numbers, do not seem to maintain them on the phone solidly...
    Any suggestions?

  • Contacts Disappeared on GE 31591GE1 Phone

    Hi,
We have been using GE 31591GE1 phone successfully for almost 10 months. Suddenly, couple of days ago, all contacts disappeared from the phone unit. Phone is still capable to make and receive calls, but list of contacts is empty and fails to synchronize with our Skype account. Phone have all latest updates, was not powered out or disconnected from internet or altered in any other way.
We have about 50 contacts in our list and about 5-6 in blocked list, total is less than 60 contacts. All contacts are visible and synchronized in Skype installed on Windows and Android systems, but completely missing on the phone unit. It looks like phone is trying to retrieve contacts from Skype, but fails somewhere during connection with Skype database (no error message, just an empty contact list).
We have followed recommended on the forum instructions to reboot the unit, re-login, wait for an hour etc - nothing helps. Still an empty list of contacts.
Seems to me like software/database glitch. Several similar complaints on this forum for last week - might be a general issue.
Please investigate or post a fix.
    THANKS

  • IPhone 4 - iOS 5 upgrade - LOST ALL CONTACT DETAILS

I upgraded to  iOS 5 and now I can't get to any of my contact details.
    What I have -
The list of my contacts is displayed under the contacts option, but when I touch any contact name it takes me back to the home screen. Can't make any phone calls. But I can receive phone calls and the caller-id displays the correct name too. So my guess is the information is there somewhere, I just can't seem to find it or use it.
What I have tried so far -
    1) Resynced contacts from the Info tab in iTunes. I get the following error msg - "iTunes couldnot sync contacts to the "iPhone" because contacts are being synced over-the-air
    2) turned off sync over wi-fi from iTUnes. Tried syncing again. Same error message as above.
    3) Tried going to "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" under settings, it takes me back to home screen. It displays the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" details screen for about half a second and takes me back to home screen.
    4) Went to iCloud under settings and tried to turn off teh "Contacts" from there. It simplays doesn't turn off. I can turn off everything else listed under there, but contacts. No matter what I do, it stays on.
    5) Signed into iCloud.com with my account. The contacts info there has only one contact listed (mine).
    6) Tried to edit contact details from one of my recent text messages. Doesn't work. Takes me backto home screen.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this. At this point I can't even use the main function a phone should be performing, i.e. make calls from my stored contacts.

I had the same problem. Time Machine proved invaluable here. I opened up Address Book, selected "All Contacts", started up TIme Machine via Spotlight, and scrolled back to the day before I ran the 4.2.1 updater. Bada bing, all contacts restored to the address book! Simply did an iPhone sync after that and all was well again.
    Still, nasty bug Apple. :-|

My contacts disappeared for no apparent reason. However, all of my contacts (updated even to the last bit) in my Macbook Air are still there. How do bring my contacts back to my phone?

    Hi perriejunn!
They might actually be the same Apple ID. When you have an email and use it to log into iCloud it will create an iCloud alias for you. I have an @live.no appleID, which also has an @iCloud.com alias that are otherwise identical.
If you log into applied.apple.com with the @gmail.com account you should see the @iCloud.com as an "alternate" email address.
You might also have created a new iCloud account/Apple ID when you used iCloud the first time. Then this @iCloud.com will not be connected to you @gmail.com address or any other mail addresses. You can then log out of that Apple ID at Settings>iCloud and log in with this @gmail.com Apple ID and sync contacts.

  • I recently updated my OS and all of my contacts disappeared.

I recently updated my OS and all of my contacts disappeared.  I plugged my phone back in to restore from the backup. When I did this, my phone starting syncing again and restored the new backup and set that as the backup...no contacts or text messages...please tell me there is a way to correct this.

Where you synced your music there is a tab that says Apps. When you click your device on the left in itunes and it tells you the serial and phone number, just aboved hit the apps tab and choose to sync them again.
