Updated to S.Leopard, now peripheral drive that WAS bootable no longer is.

I was booting into Tiger OS from my little G3 Mac laptop via an external drive.. worked great. The little G3 laptop will still boot from this external without difficulty.
BUT
In the meantime, i've updated this iMac to Snow Leopard, and the external (500 gb with Tiger Os) drive appears unchanged but is no longer bootable.
As a test, I booted this iMac with the Tiger install disk. The install disk says that Mac Os can not be installed on the peripheral drive (repeat: it has Tiger OS installed and is bootable from the G3 laptop.) While in the install disk environment, I ran Disk Utility (repair disk and permissions) without fixing the problem Both repair functions reported success and no problems found. The Tiger OS on the peripheral drive is also not available as the Startup Disk (via installer).
Disk Utility and the System Profiler on the iMac do see the drive and all its partitions. I can move files back and forth, but I need to be able to boot with the peripheral.
Swapping cables had no effect. Switching from Firewire to USB had no effect.
I'm stumped.

. I'll have to figure out how to clone the (external Tiger) OS onto yet another HD.
If you are considering cloning the present external Tiger volume that you are using for the G3 onto a new GUID-partitioned external drive, that new drive will still not boot the Intel iMac.
The current APM partition scheme is not the reason that the iMac won't boot from there - as mentioned, an Intel can boot from an APM drive that has an appropriate OS system *already on it*. It just won't install OS X onto a drive that is not GUID. The reason the iMac won't boot from the present APM drive is that the Tiger version there is intrinsically PPC only, and this will remain true no matter what disk it is transferred to.
With Leopard it is possible to construct a single-partition "universal boot" disk that will boot both an Intel and a PPC Mac, but this can't be done with Tiger. Unlike Leopard, there are completely separate Tiger OS versions for PPC and Intel Macs. For your Intel Mac to run Tiger, it needs the Intel version of Tiger that it originally shipped with - it can never run the PPC version of Tiger that is needed for the G3, regardless of what disk that version is currently on. that All Tiger (client) retail discs carried only the PPC version of Tiger.
If you hadn't already upgraded your Intel iMac to Snow Leopard then it might have been possible to construct a dual boot external drive with separate partitions for the Intel and PPC versions of Tiger. Such a disk would have to have an APM partition scheme in order to be able to boot the G3, and that means that the Intel Tiger partition would have to be cloned there - it couldn't be installed directly on such an APM drive. However since you have already upgraded your internal HD to Snow Leopard, there is no longer a source for the Intel Tiger clone unless you already have a pre-upgrade clone stored somewhere else.
If you are going to get a second external drive, you might as well keep the present drive for the G3 alone, and use the second drive just for the iMac. You would partition the new drive as GUID and install Tiger on it using the iMac and the original Tiger discs that came with it.

  • Macbook Pro recent update to Snow Leopard now disc drive doesn't work??

I just updated my Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 now my disc drive won't work at all! I've read a couple forums here that show everyone had this problem back in 2009 when I guess this first came out...great. How do I fix this? It appears to be a software issue. If I upgrade to mavericks will this fix it? Although I also see that makes your computer very slow! Ugh I need help please!

    Two things to try:
    1. SMC reset, Directions are here - note the steps are different depending on whether or not the battery can be removed by the user:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    2. NVRAM / PRAM reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
These steps are worth trying, although the problem may be deeper.
Please post back with your results.

    Hi userwhat,
Your personal data should have been saved, and you can try to follow these steps to fix your problem.
*First, you should report that to the developer of the add-on the troubles that you are experiencing.
    * Then, you can try [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ The Add-on Compatibility Reporter], which allows you to use add-ons that haven't yet been explicitly updated to work with Firefox 5, and lets you report the results of compatibility.
    * For add-ons that do not work with The Add-on Compatibility Reporter, you can still downgrade to the previously maintained version, which is Firefox 3.6 that you can download here: [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]

  • How do I import music from a flash drive that was formatted with a windows PC to my MacBook?

How do I import music from a flash drive that was formatted with a windows PC to my MacBook - the drive is showing it has over 3GB of info on it but none of the files are showing up in finder?  I had backed up my iTunes library on the flash drive about a year and a half ago before I switched from a dell to a MacBook pro.

What I found works for me is to make sure iTunes keeps the music files organzied in the iTunes Media folder according to album, artists, etc. and that it copies the music files there when adding them to the library.  That way, if something happens to the library, the raw files can always be re-imported again.

  • I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories etc. I want to format it and use it on my IMAC for backup but I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc.  But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

Stop using the drive immediately, un plug it.
Buy a copy of ProSoft DataRescue 4 and use it to search for deleted files.

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • I cannot create a folder on USB flash driver that was format in Windows

I have a USB flash drive that was format and use for my Windows PC.
When I used the USB flash drive on my Macbook, I can read the file but cannot create folder.
    Is that the IOS restriction?
    Thanks for replying.

Click on the drive, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.

    Drive Preparation
    1. If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
