Updated Yosemite, now I can't boot into OS X

I updated OS X Yosemite and when I restarted the Mac Mini the progress bar doesn't move past a certain point.
I have had no major issues with the 2012 Mac Mini (i7 2.3ghz, 16gb ram, 1TB) previously, and have updated perfectly ok in the past, including beta versions.
Any helpful suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated, thank you.

Do you recall during your Yosemite install if you were offered FileVault? If so and you didn't uncheck the checkbox to enable it, then you have an encrypted disk which you unlock at restart from a login screen. That process takes a bit to complete before you actually logon and get to your Desktop and the progress bar can stay in that position for a bit.

  • Windows Update froze, restarted computer, can't boot into anything

Before I start, I've had to resort to my iPhone for this thread creation.
I had finally got vista installed via boot camp (obviously), and I was playing Gears of War. The game would freeze occassionally, so I was checking the Internet out, and remembered a story not too long ago about GFW-Live update that came out last month. I ran a form of Windows Update to check for it, and came up two things for GFW, plus a .NET SP 1 update as well. I say a "form" of WU because I didn't open WU from the control panel, but from a website that opened this window on my computer for GFW specifically.
Here's where things went downhill. When WU got around to the .NET thing, the progress would fill up, then start again. It kept doing this over and over. I checked online for anything, and it referrred me to open WU itself. 62 important updates, 84 altogether. So I said "let's just do this".
Well, it was doing it's thing, and number 14 was the .NET thing from before. I was afraid it would hang up, and it did just that. Telling it to stop didn't do a thing, so I shut the computer down the bad way, which was the only way to, unfortunately. Task manager couldn't do anything for me, again.
After about 10 reboots and attempts to get into safe mode and getting nowhere but to the initial loading bar, which would freeze, I went to reboot into OS X. Same problem. It's freezing at the apple logo. I inserted the OS X disk to see what I could do, and that froze (yes, im holding option to select the cd at boot up). I recently upgradedy HDD, so my computer illiterate side of me is screaming "hard drive problem".
Here's my proposed solution: Swap the old HDD back in, use the disk to reinstall OS X, and use my time machine back up to get back on my computer in at least some form. CCC my internal to external. Put new HDD back in, erase, reformat, repartition, reinstall windows.
Anybody have a solution asides from my apocalyptic view?

Well, a little over a week, and no response. Not even Microsoft could help. But I did find the problem, if anyone else ever has this problem:
Windows Update (WU) did not recognize I did not have Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 installed. So, it tried to install updates that weren't compatible with my system. I had to go to Microsoft's website to download both SP1 and SP2 (WU didn't have either one of them in the update list). Having to install SP1 before SP2 is absolutely stupid; SP2 should supersede SP1 in all aspects, or at least include SP1's update files in itself.
After applying both SPs (of course, after installing the Boot Camp driver from the OS X disk), I could finally run WU and install all available updates. Computer runs just fine now.

  • Updated BIOS, now I can't boot

    Hi,
I just ran the BIOS Update utility that I downloaded from this website for my U310 laptop, and now when I power the computer on, I get this screen:
    http://i45.tinypic.com/osbdrs.jpg
After a few seconds it takes me to this screen, and when I choose the first option (Intel FFS), it shows me this very screen again:

Update: fixed by changing from RAID to AHCI.

solved- it was the dimm 3 and 4 which got errors.
not using dual channel now. only using DIMM1,2 but at least it boots up.
Then your board is most likely defective. Reseat cpu and see if pins in the socket are bent. Else it might be the slots or their wiring.

  • Can't boot into windows 7 anymore......

Hi all, I have a Mac mini late 2012 with windows7 installed through bootcamp5. It has worked flawless until recently, now I can't boot into windows anymore. I've checked in finder and the bootcamp partition is present and also all the files. Before that, I did have some trouble with my LaCie 2big thunderbolt hdd, it kept on saying I had to reformat one of the discs in the drive, but only when used in windows, in OSX there was/are no problems reading the hdd .......
Any idea of how I can make windows bootable again?, do I really have to make a fresh install of windows to make it work??
Any help is very much appreciated
    Kindly

  • ITunes Update crashed my PC, now I can't boot

I recently installed an iTunes update. During the install, it crashed my PC. Now I can not boot. It loads fine untill right before the logon screen. It just displays a blank screen after that. Same thing happens with Safe Mode, Normal, and Last known Good Config.
I was also typing my homework which I will not be able to turn in on time now. Thanks a lot Apple.
Also... The speakers in my iPod's earbuds blew in about 10 seconds. I was listing at about 40% volume. About a week later the rubber on the earbuds started peeling off. I got better earbuds with my $40 SanDisk MP3 player, they even had gold plugs.

Your only option is to connect your iPhone to your computer via USB (as the diagram indicates) and restore using iTunes.

  • HT4208 I tried to update apps, now I can not get any apps to download or update.  I've tried recommendations above, any other suggestions?  My Kindle was one of the apps I tried to update and now I can't even get into Kindle to read anything.  Help

Please help, I updated some apps, I pressed update all, now I can not open or use those apps, they just say waiting.  I have deleted some and tried to download again with no success, also tried to download different app with no success.

    1. Check iTunes and see if you have a pending/stalled download e.g. Podcast, Books, Music, Movies or iTune U. Finish off the download and you should be able to update.
    2. Check for Updates (bottom right) in iTune. When download is completed, sync to iPad.

  • Can't boot into Mac OS after Windows install via Bootcamp

    Hello.
Last night I installed Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro early 2011 via Bootcamp. After some major complications I was able to finally install Windows 7 and boot into it. Now I can't boot back into my "Macintosh HD" partition, it shows a no entry sign.
Hard Disk : 320GB Internal Sata
Partitions : 3 -> Mac, Bootcamp and 10.8 Recovery Partition
The good part is that I can still access the Mac OS partition in Windows and Windows is working perfectly fine. As a matter of fact right now I'm on the bootcamped windows.
I have a full time machine backup but still I am looking for a way to solve this without formatting the HDD.
    Things I have tried:
    1. Resetting NVRAM and PRAM
    2. Booting into 10.8 recovery partition and running DU.
    SMART Status : Verified
"Macintosh HD" grayed and Not Mounted
    Successful Verify Permissions (Twice)
Is there a way to solve this? Though the Mountain Lion partition shows when I press the Alt/option key on startup but I can't somehow boot into it.
    Thanks

Your problem is OS X is refusing to boot.
There is still a bootable volume on the Macintosh HD partition, it's just not working.
You can #8 Reinstall Just OS X while command r booted from the Recovery partition, as long as you don't use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition, your files and programs remain.
Hook the computer via Ethernet cable to a router (or modem, power reset required) with a fast relaible internet connection, you will need your AppleID and password to reinstall OS X.

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?
