Updater won't see iPod G4 - am i up the creek?

Trying to run Ipod Update to restore my G4 to factory settings. Update version is 6-28, Powerbook G4. The updater says "plug in your ipod", I plug it in, nothing happens. The screen of the ipod just keeps recycling between the apple logo, frown face image with support page, and the low power alarm.
Help me, you're my only hope.

As for your battery issue, it sounds like it isn't charging properly. Do you have a wall charger for your iPod, and if so, does it charge properly when connected to that?

I tried updating my iPod touch to the newest update. But my iPod was unable to complete the update. Now my iPod doesn't turn on completely. The apple logo appears but then the screen goes blank. I've tried charging it, letting it discharge, I've tried things I found on the internet but nothing seems to be working. What can I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Just delete it from the Applications folder, and re-download it.
If it still says installed when you go to Purchased in App Store, click somewhere else, and option-click Purchased. That allows you to redownload already installed software.

  • Ipod updater won't work; ipod won't reinstall

After re-installing my itunes, it won't update my ipod. I was advised to restore the settings to shop settings and so have downloaded the ipod updater - but when I try to run it, as I wait for the 'update'/'restore' screen to come live, I get an error message, which I have to click 'ok' and the whole thing goes off.
Meanwhile on the ipod, I'm either getting the unhappy ipod icon, of a thing which looks half like a battery and half a black zig-zag.
    Help!

I also have the same problem since I did the iTunes download to '5', I also have the error message which reads; "The iPod Cannot be updated. An unknown error occured(-50)" The iPod has even been back for repair 3 times, but no fault was found. I have established that the fault is with Apple's iTunes download of '5' which has not been cured by downloading number 6. So when will they write a 'fix'? The effect of this download on my other computer has been that iTunes itself will not open. (See the discussion forum on this problem, it is huge, but still no 'fix' from Apple). I now have an empty iPod, and iTunes that will not do its job. Not impressed, my husband has ditched his iPod and bought a Sony. If this is not sorted out soon I will be doing the same.

  • 5.0 won't see iPods

By disabling all my Norton internet security features, I got 5.0 to install, but it won't run with those programs enabled. Even when it does run, it won't see my iPods (shuffle & mini) and I've tried everything in the FAQs and suggestions (new updater, reinstall itunes). Even when I install and run with all services (except itunes ones) and all startup items (except itunes ones) turned off, it won't see the ipods. Windows sees the ipods with no problem. I would reinstall 4.9 if anyone had a link.

If you get the 4.9 link can you please post it. I'm having the same problems as you. Totally frustrating.

  • Updater doesn't see iPod shuffle

My iPod Shuffle shows up on the desktop. The amber recharge light is blinking. When iTunes opens, I get the following message: "iTunes has detected a software update for the iPod. Would you like to install it now?" When I click "Okay", the updater opens and I get the following message: "An unexpected error occurred". When I click "okay", the updater now tells me to plug in an iPod to update it. My iPod is plugged in and charging, and is on the desktop. When I quit the updater, my iPod does not appear in the iTunes source list.
I then quit and reopened iTunes. This time when prompted regarding the software update, I click cancel. iTunes now opens with my iPod listed in the Source list. However, when I go to add songs to the iPod I get the following message: "Some of the songs in the iTunes music library were not copied to the iPod because your iPod software is too old. Go to www.apple.com/ipod to get the latest iPod software update."
I've reinstalled the updater 3 times now. I got the same results as described above each time. The updater doesn't see the iPod. What is the "unexpected error"? Why doesn't the Updater see the iPod?
Also also - I ordered, received, and installed an Iogear 4 port USB 2.0 pci card, hoping against hope that that would solve the issue. It didn't. I've been working on this since the day after Christmas. The problem seems so uniquely simple, and yet I've never been more frustrated with an Apple product.
Why won't the updater recognize my iPod and allow me to install the software? I personally believe that there is some communications glitch between iTunes 6.0.1, OS 10.3.9, and iPod updater. Any word on new versions coming out of the Apple bat cave?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Itunes/Updater don't see IPOD

I'm having some problems with my new 60gb video IPOD. Itunes recognized it initially, but during syncing something happened and now Itunes and Updater don't see the IPOD at all. My XP computer sees the IPOD as a USB Mass Storage Device with and Ipod and and "unknown component" as part of it. After following all the steps in the help database, I think the problem is that the actual IPOD is somehow corrupted....I need to restore the factory settings. The problem is, that the updater doesn't see the IPOD - it's a catch-22. I tried to bring my ipod to work and got the same issue.
Should I try hooking it up to a mac and doing a restore?
Can I "format" the Ipod under windows explorer?
    What is going on??

I'm having the same problem with my iPod. I've had it for 2 weeks and it hasn't worked yet. I just haven't had time to call Apple. I've tried everything on these help pages and the closest I've gotten was having the updater recognize the iPod so that I could hit the "restore" button but after a little thinking, the updater says, "can't mount iPod". I only got the updater to recognize it after unplugging my Internet connection. I'm convinced that these problems are software conflicts. I got rid of the folder with exclamation point by resetting the iPod through diagnostic mode(turn the hold button on then off, hold down the menu and the middle select button until you get the apple, then hold down rewind and the middle select button until you get a menu, choose manual and the option at the bottom of the list is "reset"). The easier way of doing a reset didn't work for me. Of course, since the ipod won't mount, the folder/exclamation point is back. This is so annoying. My last hope is to try using it on older computer that I've cleaned off. The idea of re-installing windows (and everything else) on my main computer is not an option - I have 60 gigs of stuff and junk on there plus software programs and I don't have time to untangle it all right now. I was so psyched to finally get my iPod and I understand that hardware/software has bugs but can ANYONE from Apple please figure this out for us!!

  • ITunes 7 won't see iPod

I just installed iTunes 7 and it's the best upgrade to iTunes in, well, forever. But it won't see my 3rd gen iPod. I'm connected to my PC via firewire and haven't had any problems in the past with iTunes seeing my iPod. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting, I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes.
It sees my iPod as a hard drive in My Computer, so the computer sees it. Just not iTunes. What steps can I take to get iTunes to see it?
    Thanks for any help!

I'm having the same problem with I-pod recognition
with 2 30gb Videos. I have tried to update the ipod
and even reset it, but as soon as you tell it to
perform the function it drops the connection with the
ipod. From the looks of the forum this is not the
only problem with Version 7. If anyone has a solution
let me know. We use these for our radio station
events so we need to get back up and running. Thanks!
How do you manually update the iPod? How do you reset it (do you mean hitting play and pause at the same time for a few seconds?)? Apple has made it really convoluted to manually update your iPod software with iTunes 7. If I could, I'd just run the updater, erase the iPod, and start from scratch. But with iTunes 7, I can't find a way to run the updater.
It'd be awfully nice if the folks at Apple acknowledged these problems publically and at least gave us reassurance that this HORRIBLE problem will be fixed. They broke their flagship product. Their least obscenely overpriced product. Something that everyone and their mother has. It's silly.
btw, I connected my iPod via FW to my housemate's macbook pro and iTunes 7 recognized it instantly. Just figured I'd give a bit more info.

I just downloaded the latest updater version, plugged in my iPod Shuffle, and sat in wide eyed amazement as it actually recognized that the iPod was, in fact, plugged into the computer!!!
I held my breath while the updater did it's thing... could this actually be it? Could I finally join the army of gleeful millions, listening to my favorite tunes and newscasts while jogging? Would the wonderful little gift I got for Christmas finally - gulp! - work?
Alas, no. Just as the updater was finishing up I got the following glass if ice water in my face:
"An error occurred updating or restoring iPod. Disconnect iPod, reconnect and then try restoring again. If that does not work, go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod"
I did that, and noticed that "restoring" was not an option, as the "restore" button wasn't active. Ah well... my iPod shuffle goes back into it's neat little packaging, and back onto the shelf while I await the next round of potential solutions to slowly work their way down to the Discussions Sub-basement.
I swear to God, I will not give up on this. I know it can work. Someday, someday...

  • PC Software Updater - won't see my N80

PC Software Updater has been updated but won't see my connected N80. It says if this happens the Updater software is incompatible with my phone - can this be true?
    Thanks and regards.

Thanks to respondents. I also spoke to a very polite guy on the ClubNokia Careline. He sent me some information which I attempted to use with the following results. The text in quotation marks is from my reply to Careline.
"Here's my experience to date with the mind boggling Nokia software.
I started working thru your 13 (13!!) instruction guide which referred me out to another 10 (10!!) instruction sub-guide on preparing my phone.
The sub-guide,among other things, told me to install PC Suite, which I did.
I returned to the main guide which told me to download PC Suite Cleaner. I went to the PC Suite Cleaner page to be told that Suite Cleaner was incompatible with the version of PC Suite I had just installed, and also that in some circumstances - unspecified - Suite Cleaner would destroy user files! So I did not bother with Suite Cleaner.
I went back to PC Suite and discovered that Software Updater is on its menu.
After a long struggle during which I got the phone to recognise the USB cable and Windows to recognise the phone immediately, I got PC Suite to find the phone.
Having got PC Suite telling me the phone was connected I invoked Updater from the menu. Updater, of course, has to find the phone for itself - it didn't, time and again it didn't. Not only did Updater NOT find the phone but its searching DISCONNECTED the phone every time.
I finally gave up and decided to uninstall all the Nokia software from the Control Panel.
And then the Nokia coup de grace!!! I could not get to the Windows Control Panel!!! Windows kindly told me that it had and still has a problem with a Nokia file in attempting to load the Control Panel. I cannot get to the Windows Control Panel of my computer because of incompetent Nokia software.
I just cannot believe that software as badly designed, executed and documented could emanate from an organisation with the resources of Nokia!

  • Updater Won't Recognize iPod nano.

I made the mistake of unplugging my nano when it told me not to (Updater locking up problem). Now I can't get Windows to recognize the iPod and when I try to restore it with iPod Updater, it freezes the program. I got it to work one time and it said that my iPod isn't supported by the update, but that can't be right. I've reinstalled everything more times than I care to count. Any idea what I can do to make this thing work?
      Windows XP

I had a similar problem and found, on this site, the following which worked.
"1.Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (Google it) and install.
2.Connect iPod to USB and set the iPod in Disk Mode (details are on website)
3.Run HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and format to FAT32
4.Run iPod Updater 2006-03-23 and select restore
    5.Run iTunes and copy music".
The only difference, I did, was run Updater 2006-06-28 and, I believe, after the restore operation I changed back to the iPod from the Disk Mode.
As with any advice I do not guarantee results.

  • ITunes and iPod updater won't recognize iPod

I'm running Windows XP and it shows the iPod is there but it won't show up in iTunes and iPod updater after 'initializing' for a good 5-10 minutes says either 'could not recognize the iPod' or if it does let me restore give the 'Firmware update failure. Diskwrite error.' I have the latest iTunes and iPod update and went through all the steps in the 'Windows recognizes iPod but iTunes does not' Troubleshooting help section. All these problems started when I tried to update with the new iPod updater software and got an error, everything worked fine before. I have also tried using a friends USB cable the problem is obviously in the Nano itself. Is there any way to safely format without using the iPod updater? or what should I try doing next?
Also it seems like when the nano isn't plugged into a power source it drains the battery, with nothing showing on the screen because it always starts charging when I hook it up to the computer even though it was fully charge before.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello,
I too am having this exact same problem. My iPod nano was working perfectly until this "latest update" Since I installed that update my itunes and my ipod updater will NOT recognize my iPod. I am getting all the same error messages as you.
I have done EVERYTHING recommeded in the support pages. Reinstall, uninstall, install, reboot I've done it all a hundred times. I have over 5 pages of support documents I printed up and I followed them to the T. I have 10 different USB ports including 3 2.0 USB ports. My windows recognizes the iPod instantly, but the updater will not.
I 'm starting to think it's a problem with the update software.
Please, if anybody has any advice other than "www.apple.com/support/ipod" please post something. I have had my Nano since October and never had a problem with it and I really, really miss it right now.
    Thanks

try running this little tool before plugin your ipod. it'll stop itunes from recognizing it and will allow you to copy whatever you've got on it back to itunes, then your library will be populated and you won't have any more troubles syncing.
