Updates are nothing to be afraid of

I come in here quite frequently because I see people who are afraid of making updates because other people's experience here, and help out those who have made updates who have failed to take the proper precautions when one does update. I post this post to make sure people know that updates are nothing to be afraid of. Though if you don't take common sense precautions, you have more to fear than if you do. So here are those precautions in a nutshell:
1. Backup your data! It is not a question of if media will fail, but when. Updates may only speed failure on marginal hardware.
2. If your machine is misbehaving now, an update probably won't fix that issue. Ask how to fix your misbehaving machine before applying any update. And make sure to mention whether or not you backed up your data.
3. Check for compatibility issues of third party hardware and software with the updates before applying the updates. Many software titles have to speak to drivers which may have changed with the update. Especially do so for any system modification and utility programs.
4. An ongoing issue with updates is that some third party peripherals won't work if they are connected when an update takes place. If that peripheral is a data storage device, dismount by dragging its icon to the trash before disconnecting the device.
5. Make sure to only apply the update when you aren't doing a series of mission critical tasks. Finish those before applying any updates.
6. Don't allow the update to be interrupted by Energy Saver or any other automatic tasks.
7. Repairing permissions has often been the only maintenance that really is needed with updates. Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to repair permissions.
8. Make sure to only apply the update when you need it for running a specific software, or new feature that an update includes. In other words, if it isn't broken, don't fix it by applying an update for the sake of applying the update alone.

I'd like to add:
If any of the above steps are unfamiliar, or if you need to know whether a specific feature of an update meets your needs, please post a new topic on that matter, and someone will attempt to help you determine if the update is needed in your situation. You can also use the links on http://www.apple.com/swupdates/ to determine if the update in question has what you need. Sometimes those are posted at the same time as on Software Update, sometimes shortly thereafter.

I've been having the same problem for days and just solved it. Tried going to Apple ID and had all the same problems you did in the second paragraph. I signed out with my current username on the ipad under settings--->store and signed back in with my oldest apple id and password. Now the apps don't ask for a password to upgrade. I too had a username that wasn't an email address and had to change to one that was at some point. That's what caused the problems. Hope this can work for you.

Books are no longer supported with iPhoto '08 (a roughly six yeal old product) - you can purchase an iLife '09 DVD from someplace like Amazon or eBay and install it - iPhoto '09 is still supported this year

  • 9.2.0 Upgrade (CPSID_50026) "Files in Use" - "Some files that need to be updated are currently in use" "Program Manager"

I have no other applications open, when I try to update with 9.2.0, but I receive subject error message.  Task Manager shows NO Image Name called "Program Manager".  There is nothing else running, that is obvious to shut down.  Any suggestions, Please?

Have these posted suggestions worked for anyone?  I have been using the same installation files on several different machines.  Most machines upgrade just fine but, I have a few that receive this error and I cannot seem to get past it:  "Some files that need to be updated are currently in use"  "Program Manager" is the program that the installer is complaining about.  Does anyone know what program "Program Manager" is?  I'm assuming it is an Adobe file but, why would it interfere with one of my installations and not all of them?
I'm using the same installation files for all installs so, I don't believe that it could be my downloaded installation setup files.
Thanks so much in advance for your assistance --

My iPhone 5's itunes shows app updates badge but no updates are available

I started having the exact same issue as of last night. Tried everything I could think of but nothing worked. Have opened a support case with Apple.
I suspect there may be a problem on Apple's end with their App Store update server.
    Stay tuned.

  • I want to update iPhoto but i am afraid it will delete my photos on my desktop

I have an old IPhoto, and it says i need to update it, but i am afraid it will delete my photos off my desktop.. will it?

Updating an application will not affect the any files off your your desktop.  Have these photos on your Desktop been imported into your iPhoto Library?  What system are you rurnning and what version of iPhoto do you currently have?  What version do you want to upgrade to?
And, as Robert has already asked, do you have backups of your lPHoto library and hard dirve?

My Pages App will not open after I recently updated it. I'm afraid to lose all my docs if I delete the App and re-install.

First of all - you are running the proper iOS in order to use the latest version of Pages - correct? You need iOS 6 now.
If so ....See if this helps. Maybe Pages will open after you try this.
Quit the Pages app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Or ..... Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that didn't help backup and send your files into iTunes with file sharing.
You could lose all of your files if you delete and reinstall the app. That is precisely why you should backup your iPad and send your files into iTunes using files sharing on the iPad. Do you backup or use file sharing?

  • Not sure updates from HP Update are installing correctly

Ever since I purchased my HP Officejet Pro 8620 in late November, I've been having issues installing updates.
I installed the drivers using an Administrator account; however, my day-to-day user account is not a member of the Administrators group.
Every few days, the UP Update app notifier appears on my screen. When I press Continue, the HP Update app loads. When I press the Next button the update downloads. Immediately after it downloads, I'm prompted for my PC's Administrator credentials. After I enter my credentials, the status immediately changes to "Installation failed" and the following message appears: "We noticed you had a problem with an update. Click here for an option to manually download and install or click 'Finish' to exit."
When I manually download and run the update, I'm prompted for my credentials but then nothing appears to happen. The download page says "In most cases, you will not see any message when the installation has finished." That appears to be the case here. However, within a few days, the update notifier appears again. So it would appear that the updates are not installing correctly.
Any suggestions on how to proceed?

  • AME 7.1 Updates are now available

They should be showing up in the Adobe Updater in the next few hours. Enjoy!

Sure it fixed some problems in iTunes, but now my finder is having problems starting at login.
I logged in, ran the update and rebooted, nothing else changed during that session. The machine was just fine before that reboot. Now when I log in it takes 60-90 seconds for finder to launch.....
Anyone at Apple ever heard of testing? Ever heard of the words "unit", "string" and "user"? You fix a problem, you test that the fix corrected that problem, then you test the application affected to make sure you did not break something else, then you test the OS to make sure your fix did not break something outside of the application.....
Apple quality has really gone south lately, I guess they are beginning to fall into the MS trap of allowing marketing to drive development timelines.

If you want to use your current ID you will either have to provide a credit card or redeem an iTunes gift card.  Otherwise you can create a new ID without a credit card to purchase free apps by following this exactly as written: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534.
