Updates that require multiple reboots - any additions to KB2894518?

Hi there,
I have more than one cusotmer that deploy Software Updates as part of their BaC and OSD task sequences in SCCM. In these cases I make sure to exclude the updates listed in
KB2894518. In addition I am excluding KB2871690 and KS2920189 as mentioned in
this post by Nash Pherson over at myITforum.
Now I am suspecting that there are more updates requiring double reboots as the customers TS seems to be breaking after the installation of updates by way of a double reboot.
Do you know of any more updates that causes the TS to break?
Thanks,
Terje

Yes, but I am not confident that any of the Aug. 12th updates is the culprit.
Make sure you have excluded all the updates listed in the posts I like to above. Watch the screen while the Task Sequence reboots your client after the SUP stage. When the client is booting, you will see "configuring updates" and then a "spontaneous" boot
outside of SCCMs control.
We are working on some systematic testing to narrows down which update(s) it might be, but that takes a fair amount of time. Hope to get to the bottom of it this week.

  • Having issues with patches that require multiple reboots in a task sequence?

Are you guys having issues doing a build and capture or deployment, while including the recent patches ?
It looks like another patch is requiring multiple reboots which breaks the task sequence...
Long story short... the last time I created a .Wim file was in June (with ZTIWindowsUpdate) - it included all the patches as of June 2014. This image has been deployed since then with no problem. All the other monthly patches (07/08/09/10/11/12/01) can be
installed successfully through the deployment task sequence with no problem.
Then last week, I decided to create a new .Wim file to include all the patches as of January 2015. In my build and capture step, it exits because one of the updates requires multiple reboot. I checked on the following website and it has not been updated
    since October 22nd : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2894518
Do any of you experiences issues with a WSUS that requires multiple reboot recently ?
    Thanks!

As mentioned, the MDT offline updates task will do it. Add it to your build and capture and it will do the work for you using the updates in an update package that you've previously created. Alternatively, use a stand-alone instance of MDT to create your
image (using a build and capture TS of course) -- this can then use a stand-alone instance of WSUS to install the updates into your image which you then import into ConfigMgr.

  • OS X Updates that Require Restarts

One thing I've been noticing is when you have a OS X update that requires a restart, it finishes installing and then prompts you to either shut down or restart.
My question is . . . . why is there not an option to restart later (or restart my computer when I feel like it)?
Microsoft Windows provides this feature . . . . it's very handy as when I need to do updates I'm right in the middle of doing something, and I can either restart it right then and there or leave Software Update running in the background with that prompt waiting for me to decide.
Just seems odd that Apple has not given that option.

    Hi, Matthew.
There are a variety of reasons why an update could require a restart. For example:
    • The update may replace an application, e.g. QuickTime or Safari, as well as underlying frameworks, kernel extensions, and the like. If you were to launch the application, and it depends on these changes, it would not work as the necessary new bits were not loaded. Necessary kernel extensions are loaded at startup.
    • Kernel extension cache files are also regularly rebuilt as part of the restart following an Update that changes kernel extensions.
    • The installer may have set up a temporary Startup Item that is executed after the restart, and then removed, in order to complete certain installation-related tasks after the Mac OS X Installer has loaded the new software.
To avoid some of the common problems people can encounter after installing Updates, consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
If you think the Mac vs. Windows approach is an important issue, I suggest you submit a Mac OS X Feedback.
    Good luck!

  • Unable to update any software that requires a reboot.

When my old mbp broke down I migrated all my files using Time Machine. At first I had some issues with multiple accounts but since that was resolved everything has been running smoothly. Recently though, I discovered that when I tried to update Safari to 5.1.2, it appeared as if the installation went all right but when the system had rebooted the application was still on my software update list. On that list were also several firmware updates as well as minor updates for applications like iTunes. In fact, I could see that no automatic updates had gone through as planned since I bought my new computer last spring. The list was empty.
I tried to install all updates that didn't require a rebooting of the mbp and this went very well. However, when I tried to install the updates for firmware and Safari, my computer didn't even ask me for my password but skipped immediately to rebooting. When it fired up again, none of the updates had been installed but were still on the list for available updates.
Another thing that I've discovered while googling for a solution to my problem is that my disk permissions are corrupted in some way. I've tried to use Disk Utility to repair my disk permissions and it changes the permissions of about a dozen of files. Immediately after having been repaired though, if I run another verification scan, these same files will show up again as having the incorrect permissions.
Are these problems related? Does anyone know how to fix either of them? I'm thankful for any help at all.
edit: It might be helpful to know that I'm on a 13" mbp (early 2011) running OS X v. 10.6.8

Nothing to worry about. And no need to keep repairing Permissions. Once is enough.

For Software Update, try moving these files to the Trash (don't empty yet.)
    In your home folder library

  • IPhone 4 apps not updating that require wifi. They get only so far and then start over again. Now they won't even attempt to update. Given the 'done' or 'retry' option and they're still unusable. I've tried logging out of app store, rebooting, and reset.

I have 4 apps that will not update. Im mostly concerned with one, as it has a good amount of in-app purchases. It started to
Update and got 3/4 done then started over again. now im given the 'done/retry' option shortly after attempting an update. I've rebooted, reset(lost all my phone contacts thanks very much....), logged out of app store....
Perhaps its the wifi I'm using (cruise ship worker here), and will try again on a land wifi signal before worrying a lot. any help would be great.
In-store helper had me double click home and clear out all opened apps and that worked then , but not now.

Also, just as a note, I restored my iphone last night, and it has made no difference.
One last thing... On itunes, when i click 'info' on apps that are said to be under my friends account (ie they will only update when he is logged in), it says that i purchased them under my account, yet it won't let me update them.

  • My mac book pro does not install updates that require a restart of the computer

I have a macbook pro and any update that does not require a restart works perfectly, but if an update requires a restart (as most do) the computer will restart and the progress bar on the update will get stuck on "writing files" without moving on from this phase. I have even let the update try to install for up to ten hours and it still stays in the same phase. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.
Repair permissions and restart your computer after each installation.
If there are multiple updates listed in SU, what I do is install 2 at a time, repair permissions, restart computer & install the next batch of 2.  The max is 3 that I will install all at one time.

  • Update KB3036493 with multiple reboots cannot be integrated in Image

    Hello together,
i ran into the well known problem with the Multiple Reboot updates described
here. I tried to include the Update KB3036493 into the Image with "Schedule Updates" but i cant find it in the List. I choosed the dropdown "ALL" and saw the Update, but just the 32Bit Version of that?!
So i decided to download the Update from the Catalog and install it via DISM.
Dism said the process was successful and i unmount it with /commit. After that the install.wim was about 15MB greater than without this Update.
So far so good i rerun the Installation, but the Update was still not included - what i am doing wrong? Does somebody else have the same Problems - or a solution for that?
When does MS fix that - it is a pain since many years now - the KB Article has Revision Version 15!
    Regards
    Florian

All updates that are injected via dism.exe should show up as "install pending" if I am not mistaken. They will be "installed" when Windows setup runs.
    Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de
Im sorry this is not the solution - please read the full thread before you mark it as answer - thanks.
In our case the update is shown as injected but it´s not installed after OS-Deployment.

  • Select for update that doesn't return any rows

Are there any odd side-effects that may occur if a select for update that returns no results is never committed? I wouldn't think there are, but I'm not sure if there would be some kind of overhead or unforeseen consequences. This isn't a terribly important question, but it's come up in some coding I've done and I've not been able to find any documentation addressing it.

A select for update only locks rows that meet the predicate specified in the where clause. So, if the query returns no rows, no rows are locked.
    session1> SELECT * FROM t;
            ID DESCR
             1 Un
             5 One
             2 THIS IS WA
    session1> SELECT * FROM t
      2  WHERE id = 11 FOR UPDATE;
no rows selectedA second session can update rows in the table
    session2> UPDATE t
      2  SET descr = 'One'
      3  WHERE id = 1;
    1 row updated.John

I just realized that, although you can do updates on the table after the select fo update that returns no rows, you cannot do DDL operations liike a truncate. Unless the session that does the select for update either ends the transaction (i.e. commit or rollback) or ends the session DDL operations will fail.

  • Screen fuzzy on startup, requires multiple reboot

HiMy Probook 4540s has recently had a major screen problem. On startup, it is so fuzzy it's not possible to see the text/log on menu etc. This has happened twice now and requires multiple re-starts to get it right. The laptop hasn't fallen or suffered any type of damage. It's only about 1,5 years old.

Apple seems to still be replacing 2600XTs, and therein is your real problem, your graphic card needs to be replaced. Most users had taken it upon themselves to upgrade to a ATI 5770 or better but lately last week two people I think got Apple to replace their 2600s.

  • How to verify 10.10.3 update that required force quit to finish?

I as well as others have run into the problem of the Yosemite 10.10.3 update getting stuck and requiring reboot. Mine was stuck with no disk noise for over ten hours on "Less than a minute left". Command-L would not open the log so I couldn't verify anything was happening.
I forced a reboot by powering down. At that point the screen started flashing weirdly during the reboot and also seemed to get stuck so I rebooted again in safe mode. At that point the machine booted eventually to the Finder and the version reports 10.10.3.
I have noticed some odd things like very slow window redraws in Safari and I'm worried that the update didn't really update everything it needed to. When you reboot after an update fails to complete does the system verify the update? Is there another way to check if everything got properly updated?
I don't have a recent enough backup to restore 10.10.2 and try again. Even if I did it would of course be at risk of just getting stuck again.

Thanks for the link if not the judgmental tone.
I use Time machine. It's decent, but running it continually, which is the only way to come close to guaranteeing the safety of recently edited local files, slows my machine to a crawl. Also, as I pointed out, even if I had a seconds-old backup why would I not then encounter the same problem installing the same update on the same disk? There appears to be nothing physically wrong with the drive.
Apple has billions of dollars in the bank. The onus should be on them to make this process less harrowing for the many users out there who encounter freaky 12 hour+ time dilations of "less than a minute remaining". Time machine indeed.
Yes, everyone should be properly backed up, but many fewer us should ever have to need it than currently do. Minor system updates should not be hair raising, hours long exercises in 2015. (And yes I'm aware Windows can be scary with this sort of thing too.)

  • Optimization of an update that uses multiple selects on the same table

    Oracle version : 10g
    Hello,
I have created an UPDATE statement which uses two selects on a single table to do an update according to date criteria.
Due to the fact that the update has different criteria for updating according to whether the date falls within one of two ranges
(future or past) two selects were used together with a union between them to unite the results.
The end result is of course two full table scans and a poorly performing execution.
The goal is to update a field XDEL (type number) based on a date column value (column XDATE) where the dates of interest
fall both in the past (less than sysdate minus 45 days) and in the future (greater than sysdate +90 days). For records with XDATE
values within these ranges, I wish to set field XDEL=1
For records in the future (>=sysdate+90):
for a unique combination of XNAME+XCODE, where XDATE is within the date range for update, set XDEL=1
but for a non-unique combination of XNAME+XCODE+XDATE, update XDEL=1 only for the 'oldest' future record, ie update XDEL for MIN(XDATE) only
For records in the future (< sysdate+45):
for a unique combination of XNAME+XCODE, where XDATE is within the date range for update, set XDEL=1
for a non-unique combination of XNAME+XCODE, update XDEL=1 only for the 'newest' past record, ie update XDEL for MAX(XDATE) only
The combination of XNAME+XCODE XDATE is unique. As an example of the 'in the past' scenario:
    XNAME | XCODE | XDATE
    ================
    1. AAAA ~ 002 ~ 01/01/2006
    2. AAAA ~ 002 ~ 02/01/2006
    3. AAAA ~ 002 ~ 03/01/2006
    4. XXXX ~ 123 ~ 02/01/2006
Here, we would update XDEL in record 3. as it corresponds to MAX(XDATE) for the GROUP AAA002 (and we would also update record 4. as a unique record that meets the criteria)
As an example of the 'in the future' scenario:
    XNAME | XCODE | XDATE
    ================
    1. HHHH ~ 002 ~ 01/01/2011
    2. HHHH ~ 002 ~ 02/01/2011
    3. HHHH ~ 002 ~ 03/01/2011
    4. XXXX ~ 123 ~ 02/01/2011
Here, we would update XDEL in record 1. as it corresponds to MIN(XDATE) for the GROUP HHHH002 (and of course 4. as a unique record that meets the criteria)
Here is a query that works, but is slow:
    UPDATE TAB1 SET XDEL=1 WHERE (XNAME,XCODE,XDATE) IN ((SELECT XNAME,XCODE,max(XDATE) FROM TAB1 WHERE XDATE < sysdate-45 GROUP BY XNAME,XCODE) UNION (SELECT XNAME,XCODE,min(XDATE) from TAB1 WHERE XDATE >= sysdate+90 GROUP BY XNAME,XADDR));
    XDATE is a DATE type
    XCODE and XADDR are VARCHAR2
    XDEL is number type
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a suggestion. The code is not tested.
    update tab1 t1
       set xdel = 1
    where exists (select null
                     from (
                            select xname,
                                   xcode,
max(case when xdate < sysdate-45 then xdate else null end) xdate1,
min(case when xdate >= sysdate+90 then xdate else null end) xdate2
                              from tab1
                             group by xname, xcode
                          ) t
                    where t1.xname = t.xname
                      and t1.xcode = t.xcode
                      and (t1.xdate = t.xdate1 or t1.xdate = t.xdate2))

  • Sorry to repost, but there were no replies... Preventing app updates that require iOS 4...

I have a 1st Generation iPod Touch, is there a way to prevent iTunes from recommending I upgrade my apps when the new upgraded app would require iOS 4? I've already lost 2 apps to this problem.

    Hello
I think i have a similar problem to this. When i updated my iPod 2nd generation last week because i required it I found after it was all installed correctly that my apps did not work properly. For example, when i want to play a game it loads up for the first 5 seconds and then goes black and then goes back to my homescreen - AND this happens to every single app i have. It even happens when im on safari after a while. I honestly have no idea what has happened to it but before this occured it was working perfectly fine. I just know that this has something to do with the update because during the update the software was not downloaded properly and so i had to repair iTunes and re-install it.
Please HELP, i dont want my beloved iPod to break
