Updates to 10.5 Cause Restart Hang

Hi,
I have a mid-2006 Macbook, the warranty of which expired 7/15/09, a week before the trouble started. The internal drive died, so I removed it, booted from the Install DVD, and installed Leopard to my external drive, which worked fine. The problem is that when I try to install operating system updates the system hangs indefinitely during boot. I've tried
10.5.7 update through software update
10.5.7 standalone combo update
10.5.6 standalone combo update
10.5.1 standalone update
Each time the computer installs the update, restarts, and hangs indefinitely on boot at this point:
Typically I gave the system 25 minutes to boot each time, with at least two attempts on each install of the update. The external drive spins down and eats lunch about 5 minutes into boot. I once let it run all night and it never booted. The only fix has been to archive and reinstall the OS each time. You can imagine how time consuming it is to keep doing this.
Is this because I'm using an external boot drive??
Is this because I'm using an external monitor?? I've tried with two separate external displays. I've also tried using the Macbook screen but it's broken so I can't see what's going on during the boot sequence. Actually one of the external displays, a Gateway Monitor, doesn't display the boot sequence either, but I can see the boot sequence when I startup the laptop attached to an old APEX 12" television with a composite video cable and Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter. I mention this because some other folks have had a similar restart hang problem when using external displays: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9412370&#9412370
However, I have allowed the computer ample time to boot using it's own display. If I give it 25 minutes and plug the TV in, I get the same screen.
Before and after each update, I've also tried:
repairing disk permissions
repairing the file system
reset PRAM
reset SMC
reset PMU
It is getting pesky to have to keep reinstalling the operating system after updates crash it.
I haven't tried
safe mode
single user mode
verbose mode
startup in open firmware
running Apple Hardware Test--my next step
This was originally posted in the OS X Leopard forum: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9902392#9902392
Users there asked me to confirm I was starting up from the right disk, which isn't an issue. I've seen other users post their startup issues in the forum for their computer, rather than the Leopard forum, so I thought I'd try to post here.
Thanks all,
Anthony

So I tried again, this time with the 10.5.6 combo update, and I experienced the same restart hang and had to archive and install. But this time I tried a couple of more tricks:
1) I tried to start up in safe mode (shift), which still resulted in hang on boot.
2) I started up in single user mode (cmd+s) and ran a file system check with the command "fsck -y". I ran this twice in a row. The first result was "file system was modified" and the second result "the volume appears to be OK."
3) I started up in verbose mode (cmd+v). The computer stalled on the following line:
Applications: Ethernet Address 00:16:cb:cf:00:05

  • High CPU load after firefox 18.0 update, causing periodical hang

Hi, I am basically getting crazy here after the update to firefox 18.0 yesterday.
Firefox periodically causes very high CPU load, which makes it impossible to use.
    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/702/firefox18.png
The problem does not occur immediately after restart, but you can already see the spikes of CPU load in the taskmanager with a peak of ~4%. After a couple of minutes this will go up to almost 50% utilizing a whole core and causing the hangs.

Software Update: Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0
This update, upon booting, has caused my disk space to fill up and my system freezes up. The same happens to my coworker's computer. We both watch the remaining disk space decrease and the "spinning rainbow appears" and we must restart. What do we do?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • OSX update 10.10.2 causes mouse to jump around and text to be highlighted randomly in Dreamweaver CC 2014

OSX update 10.10.2 causes mouse to jump around and text to be highlighted randomly in Dreamweaver CC. When trying to click on a specific line of code in a js file the cursor ends up in a different place in the script and several lines of code highlighted. Clicking again jumps the mouse to a different position and even more lines of code highlighted and some characters rearranged, breaking the lines of code. Very frustrating.

    Preran,
I am having the same issue. I have a MBP connected to 2 x Dell 27" monitors over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables. Once I updated to OS X 10.10.2 this cursor highlight/jumping around issue only occurs on the connected monitors. If I move the program to the main laptop display the issue goes away. It does not require me to restart the program or the machine to make it work correctly. One way I am able to identify the issue is if I go to the line numbers in code like I wanted to select multiple lines - in the one that works correctly, the cursor turns into a white version where the tip of the cursor points to the right. When it is wrong, the cursor stays black and will only have the tip point to the left. Its just another way I identified if it was working cause I tried uninstalling DW and reinstalling - didn't work. Reset preferences as you discussed - no go. And I used other editors like IntelliJ and Adobe Edge Code - all of which work fine and don't display this issue.
I tried the preferences reset you suggest and it doesn't work. I have another machine with OS X 10.10.1 on it and this issue is not there on any monitor. Any help with this ASAP as it pretty much stops you from being able to do any editing especially with longer pages as it consistently wants to page up when you select anything and if you then click again in another area it tries to move the highlighted code to that new spot.
Update: I have a USB Microsoft Arch touch mouse connected (always worked just fine). When I go to place my cursor at some point in the code it causes the highlight flicker. If I switch over and use the built in trackpad, then I can place the cursor without the highlight issue. When trying to select multiple lines or sections of code, that still see's the highlight, page up and move of code issues regardless of input type.

  • Restart Hang

    Hi forum,
My PC keeps hanging when I attempt to restart.  It just hangs in the restart screen until eventually a power down is the only option (via power button).
After reading a few bits on the web and due to frustration I opted for a fresh install.  I then updated all the drivers, software etc and everything seemed to be running ok but then the restart hang returned.  I looked on the web again and came across someone who was having a similar issue.
Following the advice he/she was given I disabled my network adapter and this has resolved the restart hang but obviously this is far from a permanent fix.  I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction as to what is actually happening with my system.

    @DaHustla ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  Here is what I want you to try.
Go back and do the full system recovery again.
HP PCs - Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8)
Once you have completed this and are back to the out of box settings.  Instead of running updates from the HP assistant.  Go through to the Support site and download your full list of drivers for your system and save them to an external memory device.
HP Pavilion 15-p078sa Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) - Software and Drivers
Take a look at the file name and date of each driver from the HP support site.
Now boot your system into safe mode.
HP PCs - Windows 8 Safe Mode
While in safe mode go into the device manager and check each of the drivers starting with the chipset.
This is the most important one.
If the chipset driver is not the same as the one on the Support site you may want to make a change.
If your chipset driver is older on the notebook than on the Support site. Go through the process of removing all your drivers.  Again make sure you take note of all the other drivers that are installed.
    File name and date.
In the process of removing your drivers while in safe mode you may be requested to uninstall  then reboot after each one.
Remember to boot into safe mode each time.
Once all drivers are removed then boot into Windows normally.
Now you will install the drivers starting with the chipset driver first before anything else.
Again you may be requested to do a reboot between installs.
Once you have installed all your drivers then proceed to install any software you wish to install.
After you have installed your software then go an run the Windows Updates.  Do not use the HP version at this point because you would have installed all updates that are concerned with drivers.
If the Windows Update shows any driver updates do not run them.  The drivers may point to generic drivers from microsoft and may not work with the proprietary hardware of your notebook.
Once you have completed this and you still have the same issue you will need to contact HP phone support for repair options.
Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Error while saving a workflow via sharepoint designer: Server-side activities have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities.

While saving a workflow using SharePoint designer on a SharePoint site, I get the following error:
Server-side activities have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities.
    Steps to recreate error:
Login to the WFE server hosting IIS and workflow manager, open SharePoint Designer 2013 and login to a SharePoint site.
Access the list using SharePoint Designer 2013, in the workflow section, click new workflow.
In the new workflow dialog, enter workflow details, click save (see screenshot below).
Error message is displayed as below:
After restarting SharePoint Designer, the saved workflow is not seen in the site/workflows or list/workflow section.
    Workaround
When the above steps are repeated while accessing the site via SPD from any other box besides the WFE/Workflow manager host server, the error is not encountered and its possible to save/publish workflows.
    Notes
    Workflow Manager 1.0 is installed.
The site has been registered with Workflow manager using Register-SPWorkflowService

  • Server Side activties have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities.

    Hello,
I have the following scenario for the installation of EPM 2013 environment:
    1 Server running Windows 2008 R2 SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2
1 Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1, running Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise (Standard Initially installed and then migrated to the Enterprise in order to install Project Server 2013), Project Server 2013 and Workflow 1.0 (2013).
After configuring and validating the configuration of Workflow 1.0 by http://server_name.example.com:12291 page and also check the Application Services in Central Administration and receive the Workflow Status = Connected.
Alright, but when I run the SPD 2013 RTM to test the creation of Sharepoint Workflow 2013, I get the following warning:
"Server Side activties have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities."
    I've tried:
    a. Restart SPD2013;
    b. Restart Server 2013 and Sharepoint Workflow 1.0;
    c. Reinstall and reconfigure Workflow 1.0
And the message is always displayed, preventing the use of Workflow Sharepoint 2013.
Can anyone help me, I'm in the middle of a deployment to a customer.

How did you uninstalledLanguage Pack from SharePoint 2013 ? when I googled it I found that language pack cannot be uninstall@
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262108.aspx
"If you no longer have to support a language for which you have installed a language pack, you can remove the language pack by using the Control Panel. Removing a language pack removes the language-specific site
templates from the computer. All sites that were created that have those language-specific site templates will no longer work (the URL will produce a HTTP 500 - Internal server error page). Reinstalling the language pack will make the site functional again.
You cannot remove the language pack for the version of SharePoint 2013 that you have installed on the server. For example, if you are running the Japanese version of SharePoint 2013, you cannot uninstall the Japanese language support for SharePoint 2013."

    Yes.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.
When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done.
Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced

i have iphone 4s from japan which is a carrier locked (kddi ) it has ios 5.1.1 and now i want to upgrade to ios 6.Can i do the software update or it will cause any harm???

If you have a Japanese iPhone and are using it with any carrier other than Softbank or AU, then it was hacked, since as the others have said neither of those carriers unlock iPhones. Therefore if you upgrade iOS or restore your iPhone, it will lock back to the original carrier and be unusuable with your current cell provider.
We cannot help you with jailbroken iPhones. You'll have to look elsewhere for further assistance.

  • PLEASE HELP ! While updating My Xperia Z1 , my pc hanged during the process and .

While updating My Xperia Z1 , my pc hanged during the process ( so , installation of update was interrupted , guess it's same as getting your USB connection disconnected )and now the phone won't turn on .
Its shows the Sony Xperia logo , then shows a black lit screen , and that's it , nothing else happens . I can only turn it off by pressing and holding the power+up volume button , but it turns on automatically if plugged in for charging or in PC only till it gets that black screen .
I tried to flash it with a flashtool (Emma) , but it says phone locked , but since it can't even be turned on , i can't unlock it .
It's a store bought phone and is not of any contracts with any mobile service provider or anything like that ....
Funny you know ... my PC had to crash at the moment i was updating it .... my luck ....
Anyways , now please can anyone tell me what i can do ? I'm sure there is a way i can fix it using my pc and other downloadable software , so please can some one help me how i can fix this problem ? I don't care if i lose all the data on it , i just want my phone back ....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Problem Solved ,Thank you  very much !!
For those who might face the problem and stumble upon this thread after googling
    Read above mentioned comments
    Now here's what I did :
Turned the phone off by power+volume key method , then plugged it in to the pc via USB and opened sony pc companion , entered Support zone , then entered the Update device option , then I Unplugged my device , only after doing this a window pops up with  Repair my phone/tablet in blue text , then i clicked on that and followed the simple instructions ..
It's basically what Thommo said , only i was so freaked out at that time that i failed to follow his instructions to the letter
So now my phone is back to normal , and , it got the latest lolipop update !
Problem solved i guess  but Thommo , i need to disturb you again with  just one more  question ,  since at the very beginning , the update process was interrupted , and now i got lolipop after  the repair ,without needing to update again ,  so has the lollipop been installed properly on my phone or do i need to use any other flashtool to re-install lollipop ?
    again , Thank you ...
