Updatig unchecked songs in playlists

Any help appreciated. If I uncheck in each playlist it doesn't update the ipod to which that playlist is desired. Only if I uncheck in the library! which then unchecks each playlist, which is a frustration if you want a track in one playlist but not another as it appears to uncheck all playlists where that song exists. I have the prefs set to only update checked songs for each ipod. I need to do this as we have one pc but two ipods, some tracks are shared on playlists others are not...it looks like only unchecking in library works, but then it unchecks the track in all playlists...Can I uncheck and update playlists that are created for each ipod? Hope this makes sense (Jake aged 9)

Jake, what you MAY want to do is make separate playlists for the two ipods. Say you and your Mom have one playlist that you both like . . . make a copy, and name one J Jams and the other M Jams (so you know which one you want to sync to YOUR iPod versus your Mom's). Does this make sense? I sure hope so.
This may help, too: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432

  • How do I make a playlist play UNchecked songs?

When creating a new smart playlist there's a checkbox option called "Match only checked items".
This means you can make a playlist that will include unchecked items.
Now how do I get them to play?
In particular I use the Genre field in conjunction with the Grouping field to identify Christmas songs. After all a Christmas song can be Rock, Funk, Soul, Pop, Folk, etc. whatever. I keep these songs unchecked so that they don't turn up in my smart playlists the rest of the year when I'm making a playlist of e.g. R&B.
However, I also have a smart playlist called Christmas that collects all these unchecked songs. Now how do I get it to play those songs?
    Thanks.

You dug up an old apple account from years ago to respond to Grant Greene's 13 month old post?
I've been asking this question for years, because SOMETIMES I just make a playlist of a mix of checked and unchecked songs so that I can listen to ALL the songs in that playlist without checking them, ..
    and valiant66 wrote,
"Besides, the checkmarks were put there to control what syncs with your iPod, not what you listen to."
which is incorrect. The option Sync only checked songs was put there for for additional control when syncing, not the only control
As noted, unchecking songs does more than simply not sync them.
And even when unchecked, you need to select the option to not sync checked songs.

  • [Bug] Unchecked songs not being played, skipped in all playlists

To me this is a bug. I used the check feature to determine what gets transferred to my iPod -- I have 120 gig iPod Classic and over 300 gig of music as can see not all of my music can fit on my iPod.
    1) There needs to be an easy way to to determine what gets transferred to the iPod without affecting what iTunes plays... just because I have it unchecked doesn't mean that I don't like the track... if I don't like the track, I delete it. Multiple playlist isn't the answer, too cumbersome to maintain
    2) iTunesDJ will play unchecked but will not automatically choose them... what good is that... there needs to be a simple way of doing this too.
    Thanks,
    George

*There needs to be an easy way to to determine what gets transferred to the iPod without affecting what iTunes plays.*
Another method you can use to auto-sync your iPod with iTunes is "Sync Music - Selected Playlists". Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". This is particularly useful when your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, it also makes it much simpler to know exactly what you are syncing to the iPod and what you are not. When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). Drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod: Syncing Music to iPod
Using unchecking to manage an iPod is an option (and works fine when you are working with a small number of specialised tracks such as Christmas songs) but only if you can live with the other things unchecking does:
Unchecked songs will be skipped when playing songs from the library or a selection. They will only play when individually clicked on.
Smart Playlists have an option that unchecked songs won't appear.
Unchecked songs will not be burned to CD.
Genius and iTunesDJ will not use the songs that are unchecked.

  • Can unchecked songs in the library remain checked in a playlist?

I am creating a playlist for my son but I don't want his songs to be checked in my library. I just want them checked in his playlist. I play my library on shuffle and I don't want his songs to sync into my library. Can someone please help me manage his songs separately without creating a whole new account for him?

Unfortunately you won't be able to uncheck a song in one location and have it remained checked in another. That's just not how iTunes operates.
However, I don't see your issue: are you making sure his songs don't sync to your iPod/other device? or do you simply just not want those songs to play when you are shuffling your entire library?
If a song is unchecked, by default it won't get played when you're shuffling or in a playlist. So you don't need to worry about that.
The only issue that would arise (and maybe this is what you are referring to?) is if you have a playlist of unchecked songs, whenever you play one on that playlist, it won't automatically go to the next one.
If you want to work around this, try checking all of the songs on that playlist, but select "Get Info" for all of them and select "Skip When Shuffling" on the options tab. If I'm not mistaken, this would therefore allow you to play all of his songs continuously in the playlist, but whenever you do a full library shuffle, they will not get played. If you want to manage with an iPod though, like any checked items they will also go to your device, unless you designate your iPod to not take from that playlist.
    Hope this helps
If you connect an iPod/other device, if the setting "Sync only checked items" is marked, any unchecked items will not go to that device.

  • IPod nano issue with shuffle function--includes unchecked songs

When I use "shuffle" on my Nano, it is including songs that I have deselected from my music library in iTunes (i.e. songs I don't want loaded to my Nano).
Anyone know why this is happening? I thought unchecked songs weren't transferred to the device, yet I can play them on it?
Is this a glitch or known error?
Thanks for any help you can provide....

    Check the following:
    - Is the iPod full?
    - Is the iPod set to update automatically?
    - Is the iPods update behavior restricted to a certain number of playlists?
    - Rightclick the iPod in the sourcelist, hit update.
    - If nothing else works, try reformatting the iPod with the latest Updater

I am having trouble removing songs from my iPhone.  i have unchecked songs in the library on my mac, but they still show up on phone after syncing.  how do I remove them?

    Hi asims01,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The information below may be able to answer your questions about how to delete songs from your iPhone:
Deleting songs downloaded to your device
    Tap the Music app.
Tap More > Songs at the bottom.
Scroll or search for the song you would like to delete from your device.
Swipe right to left on the song, and then tap Delete.
Note: You must be in Artists, Songs, or Albums view to delete songs from your device. Deleting from a playlist won't remove a song from your iOS device.
Also, this information can be found on page 64 of the iPhone User Guide for iOS 7
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
Remove a song from iPhone. Tap Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
If you have iOS 7, this will delete the song from local storage, but the song will still appear with a cloud symbol in the Music app, as you've noticed. To hide the iTunes in the Cloud purchases, navigate to Settings > iTunes & App Store, and disable "Show All: Music”
There may be a few orphaned songs on your iPhone that were partially downloaded or corrupted in some way. If that is the case, you can erase all of the music from your phone.  Follow the instructions below and select the Music app under Usage:
iPhone, iPad, and iPod: Understanding capacity

I hope this information helps ....

  • Tired of paying for Apple's continued failure. Give us option on phone (NOT thru itunes sync) to MANUALLY delete songs from playlists or the iphone altogether.

It happens every time I make iTunes music purchases: entire playlists get wiped out, and all I can sync onto the iPhone 5 is what I just purchased, UNLESS, YET AGAIN, I completely restore it to factory and rewrite everything all over.
    So sad, Apple.
Yes, I have looked thru the forum threads yet again, and found no other working solution.
Yes, I tried backing up the phone 1st but still get stuck with (expletive) I wanted off the phone, and stuff I wanted on there, ISN'T there.
For whatever (insert expletive of choice) reason, it will NOT sync my old playlists.
For whatever (expletive) reason, if I check "manually manage music" under the Summary tab, then go over the music tab, something (expletive of choice)  up in the software decides to uncheck the "Manually manage music" box under the Summary tab, and it just creates a zero-progress loop where I can't sync the old playlists, or even new ones I create, onto the iphone.
Worse, songs I tried to take off of it long ago seem to manifest the (expletive) right back onto the iphone out of nowhere, and unless I completely restore, LIKE I'M DOING AGAIN, there is no working option I have found that removes the song(s) I THOUGHT I GOT RID OF.
PLEASE, Apple, is it asking too much to create a music sync that WORKS CORRECTLY all the time?
It is ONLY ever the music that does this.
App syncing, photo syncing, all of that functions properly each and every time.
And yet, oh look, it won't accept any playlists off my AUTHORIZED computer.
GIVE US THE SIMPLE option on the next iPhone update so we can manually remove/delete unwanted songs from playlists on the iphone, or from the iphone altogether, WITHOUT needing to connect it to a computer thru a faulty iTunes software that obviously consistently fails to properly sync the correct music on and take off what we don't want.
This is the final time I'm making the mistake of iTunes Store purchases until a sensible fix is implemented that addresses this fail sync issue.
Again, WHY is it ONLY and only ever the music syncing that (expletive of choice to get the point across) fails, yet apps and photos and mail & phone contacts sync correctly every time?
Yes, I read in the forum threads and customer support responses what needs to be checked and/or unchecked, yet all too often some software fail decides to revert those selections right back to where they were if I click another tab and come back to it (no, it's not an administrator thing, I am the only authorized user on the computers in question).
I'm tired of the hassle of having to redo my music library all over again, restore the phone, and hope that once more it will have the correct songs I told it to sync and NOT have a bunch of crap I never checked for it to have on there in the first place.
    FIX THIS PLEASE.

    You're welcome.

  • Hide unchecked songs in Library

I have substantially more disk space on my laptop than I have on my iPod 30GB. I transferred my entire collection, and now I have a lot of duplicates. I have manually unchecked the songs after using Show Duplicate Songs method.
I have synched my iPod now, and as desired there was a reduction in the number of songs. However, the number of songs in my Library and on the iPod no longer match. I would prefer not to delete the duplicate songs from my library.
Is there a method to hide the unchecked songs in the Library?

    ... sort of ...
try creating a smart playlist that displays only checked songs in your library.
    this rule is fairly easy:
Size is greater than 0 MB
and make sure to check "Match only checked songs".
then you can navigate about in the smart playlist rather than the main library window.

    thx Much

There might be an other solution, but I solved it by creating 2 smart playlists.
The first one called 'Checked', has the following rule:
Artist - does not contain - 123456 (or any other name you're sure is not an artist name)
    Check 'Match only checked songs'
    The second one called 'Unchecked':
Playlist - is not - Checked
Using the Browser and the Search Bar, you can find and manage checked/unchecked songs, podcasts, audiobooks and videos.

  • Delete unchecked songs

Since I have just over 40,000 songs in iTunes, I had an idea how to use Match and not exceed the 25,000 song limit.  When synching with my iPod classic, I have it only sync checked songs.  So, for me, it makes sense to put only those checked songs in the cloud, so I can access them from my iPhone & iPad.  That count is currently about 12,000.  What I want to do is create a copy of the library, delete all the unchecked songs (keeping the files), then turn on Match and let it do its thing.  I could then restart iTunes with the original library, where Match is turned off, and still have everything there.  As time goes on and I add more songs to the iPod by checking them, I can repeat the process.
I created a copy of the "iTunes Library.itl" file and named it "iTunes TEMP Library.itl". Started iTunes (11.0.4.4) with the new library and selected the smart playlist "Unchecked". The idea is to delete all the unchecked songs from the library, but of course, keeping the actual files. As a test, I clicked on the first song, then did a shift-click on a song 4 lines down, which selected 5 songs. I hit the delete button, but nothing happened. Tried right-clicking on this highligthed group, but don't have the delete option. Are we not allowed to delete songs when viewing them in a playlist?
I then clicked on the "Songs" button up top to list all songs, and clicked on the check-mark column header. This sorted the songs, with all the checked ones first. Scrolled down to the first unchecked song, clicked on it, then 4 rows down did the shift-click. Hit the delete button and was able to delete the songs, keeping the actual files. Shut down iTunes and started it back up using the original library. As expected, those deleted songs are still there.
So, now I'm looking for a quick way to delete all unchecked songs when I'm in that secondary library. Why didn't that work in the "Unchecked" playlist? Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks again.  Can't tell you how much I appreciate the tips and info.  Looks like everything is working as I expected.  Deleted all unchecked songs from the copy of the library, turned on Match and its well into the second step (Matching your music with songs in the iTunes store).
As far as those library files go, I've been thinking that it doesn't really make any difference to me.  I'll only use that copy of the ITL file for this matching process and to update to higher quality checked songs.  Then go back to the original library, with Match still turned off, for everyday use.  As I check more songs in the future, I can always repeat the process to get the latest ones in the cloud.
One interesting thing I just noticed.  My original iTunes Library Genius.itdb file is just 32kb.  I copied the iTunes Library.itl file to one named iTunes TEMP Library.itl, started iTunes with that library, and turned on Match.  Now the iTunes TEMP Library Genius.itdb is 29,468kb.  Based on the time stamp of the file, it would appear that this file grew during step 1 (Gathering information about your iTunes library).
Hope you have a great weekend!

  • How to select unchecked songs only

  • Checking or unchecking songs on itunes

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows how to select/check or uncheck songs in itunes. When I sync my ipod, sometimes I only want to update certain songs, and going through and checking/unchecking all of the songs is literally impossible and too time consuming.
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Jen

It's easier to manage your music using playlists instead of checking/uncheckng songs.
Create playlists and add/delete from those playlists.
Select the iPod in iTunes, click on the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and Sync selected playlists.

  • Can I Play "Checked " and "Unchecked" Songs on PC Automatically???

I want to Sync only checked songs from my Libray to my Ipod, so I don't use up all it's capacity. But, when I play songs from my PC, only the "checked" songs play automatically. It skips over the "unchecked" songs in any list. Is there a way to fix this so that all my songs on my PC will play together, or do songs need to be checked to play automatically in any list???

*do songs need to be checked to play automatically in any list???*
Yes they do.

  • Removing unchecked songs from ipod, without deleting the files from itunes?

I want to remove a large amount of songs from my ipod, without deleting them from my itunes.
I unchecked them all in itunes, but accidentally synced my ipod without selecting "Sync only checked songs." But now when I sync it--even with that box checked-- it leaves all the unchecked songs on my ipod.
I can't seem to just go into the music on my ipod and delete them either.
Is there anyway I can automatically remove all the unchecked songs from my ipod without deleting them from itunes?
(I know I can manually choose what to sync, but it would be a massive headache to go through 30 gigs of music to select the 20 I want on there....)

    Hey Emily,
So the *Sync only checked songs and videos* option is still ticked from under your iPod's Summary tab correct? If so, what options do you have ticked from under the Music tab for your iPod? If it is set to only sync *Select Artists, Playlists, and Genres* try changing that to sync your entire music library. Then make sure to hit the Apply button to update the changes to your iPod.
    Any luck there?
