Updating a branded, out of contract, unlocked hand...

nokia now give us 2 years guarantee with our phones but the networks will only guarantee them for a year. so, say for example my 6630 phone is over 12 months old and I've payed the network for the unlock code and I'm happily using the phone on a new network but i wish to update the firmware to fix a couple of issues. but when the phone is done updating it has new network branding from the old network which is pointless on the network the phone is now using? why after disassociating the phone from the network by paying for the unlock code do nokia then impose extra unwanted software on us?

dont forget, you have broken (or more precisely who ever did this for you has broken) strict guidelines issued by nokia to get your phone 'de-branded'
so, it is perfectly right for you to get the variant firmware put back on your phone. the sim lock will not be touched however.
if nokia offered an option to choose generic software for the phones, they would be (probably) breaking their own guidelines and any agreements they have with the operator.
if you do not like a networks variant firmware you should not use them, end of.
i feel this will be raking up an old argument...
think you missed the point a little here. say you had a choice of two phones on a particular network, one had horrific network branding but the other didn't and because one type of phone didn't have the branding you chose this one. but after updating the firmware they now have the unwanted stuff on it.
i know a lot of people will look at a phone in store to check how much branding a phone has before choosing it on a particular network but then to find that after faults have been fixed that the software they were trying to avoid is now present on the phone has to be wrong? fix things, YES. change things without aurthorisation. NO!
and i think your right about bringing up an old subject, thats why I've avoided mentioning what network I'm on about!

You're being lied to. There is no code. The unlock process is summarized as follows:
You request an unlock from the carrier
Your carrier enters the request into their system
    time passes...and passes...and passes
Eventually someone at the carrier approves the request
The approved request is sent to Apple
It goes into a queue at Apple
Eventually (usually 1-2 days) Apple updates their activation database to show the phone as unlocked
You then connect the phone to iTunes on your computer and click the "Restore iPhone" button in iTunes
If the request has been processed, when the Restore is complete you will get a message "Congratulations. Your iPhone is unlocked"

  • Help unlocking my phone as I am now out of contract with EE...

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. I have been a pay monthly customer with EE for several years and have recently moved to Italy, and my contract with EE has now finished. I would like to unlock my iPhone 4 to use with an Italian phone provider but as I am out of contract I cannot use the online form provided on EE website. I also cannot pop into a store given that I now live in Italy. Any advice on what to do from here would be much appreciated!

These are the EE unlocking rules and these are the only way to get your device unlocked.
It costs £8.99 to unlock a device from EE there are a number of options that you might be able to use to get your device unlocked.
    But first this.
Only contract devices have to be used for 6 months first before requesting a unlock. PAYG, Sim only or secondhand devices this rule doesn't apply.
1, If you still with EE/Orange/T-Mobile just fill out the unlocking request form with your details. Any phone that was replaced by insurance you will need to let EE know that it was a replacement device if your still in contract. You can also unlock an old device if you have a upgrade device on your account just fill out the request form with your details and the phone number you used with this device. It doesn't matter if you use this number on a new device now.
2, If you already have an account with EE and you have brought/been given a 2nd hand device lock to EE and you would like it unlocked you just need to use your Sim card in the device so the IMEI number gets registered to your account. Once your account has the IMEI number on it you can the fill out the online unlock request form.
3, If you have brought/been given a 2nd hand device and don't have a EE/Orange/T-Mobile account and you don't want to use the EE networks you need to get a PAYG SIM card and set up an account. Top-up the account to £8.99 to pay the unlock fee than fill out the online unlock request form.
(If using a PAYG you must make sure that the £8.99 is on your account when EE take the payment if it's not your device will not get unlocked and EE will not inform you that the unlock request has failed. It's you job to make sure the cedit is there when EE go to take it they will not inform you when there going to take it)
    Or
4, A non EE customer can take the device to your local EE store and request the unlock from there it will still cost £8.99 and it still takes 7 to 10 days
5, If you would like a device unlocked and you are no longer with EE/Orange/T-Mobile just fill out the online unlock request form using the number that you used with that device on EE/Orange/T-Mobile. EE will unlock devices that are up to 10 years old that were used on their network. You will still be billed to unlock the device.
6, If you have brought or thinking about buying a 2nd hand device and you are not in the UK you are going to find it very hard to get a device unlocked when you setup an account you need a UK address also you will need to get a PAYG SIM card but you will also need to find away of topping up the account with GBP, if you can not do any of this the device will not get unlocked there are no exceptions.
Click here for the online unlock request form

Contact Sprint. They are the only ones that can authorize an unlock. No one else can. If they refuse to unlock, there is nothing you can do but sell the device and get another phone.

  • Verizon wireless is refusing to unlock my out of contract 4s. What can Apple do about.

Verizon wireless is refusing to unlock my out of contract iPhone 4s. I have called three times their customer service. I just finish reading about the CTIA and FCC agreement regarding the unlocking process. A copy of the agreement can be found at http://www.ctia.org/docs/default-source/fcc-filings/ctia-letter-on-unlocking.pdf What can be done from the Apple's OEM side of the business in order to have my device unlocked?

The unlock of ANY device is accomplished BETWEEN the wireless server and apple. PLEASE understand that without the wireless carrier agreeing that it is in their best interest to unlock your device they will NOT unlock the device.  If the device has met all critirum AND you are the registered owner of the device there should be NO REASON why the wireless carrier will not unlock the device. But please appreciate the fact that in this security laden world we live in each and EVERY business errs on the side of the customer whenever there is an issue of protecting said customer.

My iPhone 4 is currently locked to Bell-Canada.. It is now out of contract and I've already cancelled my bell account.. Now I want to unlock it.. But Bell is not offering unlock.. What to do????

    Hello Mahal1990,
I have the same problem with them and I do not intent on paying the penality fees because of this. I am now located in France and Bell doesn't even cover this area.
Why would I pay for a phone that does not work?
Could I have your name and address in case I need to go to court with this?

  • Out of contract branded Nokia?

What are the rules governing an out of contract, out of warranty branded Nokia handset? Is "de-branding" technically possible then?

The rules are that you must have written permission from the network that branded it to get it debranded at a nokia care point.  Also if the phone is sim locked you must get them to remove that too.
Some networks will help, others won't, it's really pot luck and totally at the networks discretion as nokia cannot force them to do it.
That is the only official method and the only debranding method that can be discussed on this forum in detail.
If the warranty has expired then "other methods" are probably the better option to save a lot of hassle.

I have been given my sons out of contract iphone 4 so can it be unlocked by apple from 02?
I want to use it on orange.
    Thanks

ONLY the carrier to whcih it is locked can unlock it.  no one else.  Not Apple.  no one but the carrier to which it is locked.
Contact that carrier and ask them if they offer this service and if you qualify

  • Thanks this was very useful.. I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am having the same problem constant network fluctuations, no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/ba

I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am experiencing constant network fluctuations on my iphone , no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/bars searching etc... Ifeel miserable after trying out all the options changed multiple sims, tried multiple carriers, restored the phone back and have set-up as new device but the problem does not get solved... its is so frustrating that after investing on a world's most expensive phone you cannot enjoy the calling features which the phone offers which is the main thing you own the phone for.. Rest of the things are working.. The funniest part I am not able to make calls or receive calls but can access the internet..  I have tried every possible thing and really very frustrated with this iphone of mine...I hope the problem gets solved.. would anyone have any solutions to this problem.. Does it mean one should never update software as I hear that after updating to IOS.5.1 the problem has started coming and same has been with there.... Apple says its a hardware failure which is very difficult to digest as sometimes I get 5 bars and able to make and receive calls but 95% of the time I am unable to. If anyone has any solution I will be very happy if he or share can share the same. Many thanks. its so disgusting to experience this on top of this apple does not support global warranty for the phone as you need to go to the country from where you bought the phone for replacement.. Truly sad state of affairs.. very very very dissappointing.

Have a look at this it might help

  • Getting a droid X contract after out of contract

My contract ends the 16th of next month. My friend has a droid X and he is going to give it to me for free. i wanted to activate it on my plan once it was out of contract. i currently have the $10-75MB data feature.
When I activate the Droid X is it going to make me have the $30 unlimited plan? I don't need the unlimited plan, I have wifi 90% of the places I go and I am not addicted to my phone so I don't need it to constantly update.
Can anyone answer this for me? Thanks

If you check vzw.com the requirements for an Android phone is:
    Data pack required
Early Termination Fee $350 (1yr and 2yr contracts)
Note the "Data pack required"....You are able to keep the grandfathered $15 for 150MB data plan instead of needing the Unlimited Plan. The only time you need the "Unlimited Plan" is if you are adding a new line of service that does not have a grandfathered data plan for the $15. No you cannot have the $10 plan sorry. I am in a similar position as you but keep this in mind: You say you use wifi and are not a very active data user - well, once you get a droid, trust me, you will find many things that you will want that data for and some of those things may not work on wifi and some will update(weather, etc) when your are not on wifi. Are you a video game finatic? You will love the emulators and if you have a wii remote you can sync it to your phone and use it to play your games....neat....I applaud the creator(s) of this app. If you only knew what the Droid has you might think twice. If it is the cost of the plan I understand what you mean.
Yes VZW is going to a tiered data plan structure and will be ending the unlimited data sometime but who knows when. Other carriers have done this already. So with that said eventually you can get a lower data plan cost but if I were you I would get the unlimited plan so when the plan goes away you can keep it(grandfathered) and then if a tier price works then switch.
Your decision but just wanted to clarify....

I have a cousin from the U.S.. He can give me an iphone 4 was out of contract with AT & T. Now I have brought to Vietnam and can not be used since the Vietnam does not have AT & T network. I can get the code to unlock iphone 4 can be used with other networks are not?
I am willing to provide information of my iphone if you need to know.
If possible, I thank you very much.
I do not know much about the language he should use google to translate from Vietnamese into English. If there is something wrong please forgive me.
    Thanks a lot....

If the iPhone 4 belongs to your cousin I would suggest you send it back to him and ask that he contact AT&T to request they unlock it.  As of today, AT&T will take requests to unlock iPhones on their network, however there are certain criteria that need to be adhered to.
