Can I use my mac to update a windows ipod? The ipod needs a system update.

I have an Ipod for windows. Can I play my ipod on a Mac? Would the Mac/Itunes ask me to update my ipod to Mac? If I do that, can I format my ipod to mac and later reverse to window without problems? I have to Dj for a friend's party and he has a mac laptop wired to the whole sound system. Of all the options, hooking up my window/ipod to his mac is the easiest solution ..is that possible?

Oy. Uh yeah this one is a toughie. Well i do have one answer in which could be a bit Time Consuming.
This will require: lots of CD's (or if iTunes permits, a Flash Disk), Your Windows PC, and MBP.
1. Open your Windows Start Folder and navigate to iTunes.
2. Start Burning CD's of all your music.
3. Import to your new Library on the MBP.
4. Reformat your iPod as necessary to work on the MBP.
5. Sync and enjoy

Using my Windows iPod on a Mac

I own a windows-formatted 30GB iPod Photo (4th gen ipod).
The ipod itself works without any problems. If I attach it to my Windows machine, the iPod is recognized by itunes and syncs my library without problems.
I want to start syncing the ipod with my mac instead of my windows machine. Everything I have read claims one of the following:
1) A Mac can use a Windows formatted ipod without problems
2) The ipod needs to be reformatted for the Mac.
I am fine with either of these. I have the music backed up on an external hard drive and don't need to use the ipod with windows anymore, so reformatting the ipod for mac would not be a problem for me if necessary.
The problem is that when I attach the iPod to my Mac (a macbook air running Leopard), iTunes does not give any indication that it sees the ipod. The ipod itself displays "do not disconnect" on the screen and seems to be charging as it should be; I am confident that the USB port and cable are fine. However, iTunes does not list the ipod as a device or give any indication that it is connected.
In order to reformat it for the mac, I need to use Restore functionality within iTunes (right?), but I can't do that if itunes doesn't list my ipod. What do I do?

Wow! That is crazy. I've been using a Windows formatted iPod on my Mac for many years without a problem. But just recently, I have the same problem as the original poster. Sometimes I connect my iPod to my Mac and it does not mount. Rather, the iPod acts as if I plugged it into a wall powered USB cable. It charges, but does not mount. No sign of the iPod on the Mac. If I unplug it and try again (and maybe a 3rd time), the iPod finally mounts.
Is this a sign that my iPod is dying? I hope not, because it is a 160 gig version and I love having that much space.

Synching a Windows IPod to a Mac

I have a second generation IPod Nano for Windows and recently acquired a Mac, to which a Windows IPod won't sync. Is there anything I can do to make the Nano Mac compatible?

A windows formatted iPod is still compatible with a Mac, since a Mac can read/write to a FAT32 formatted disk. Simply connect your Nano and sync as you did on your PC.

Priscilla, welcome to discussions! I had to do the same thing abot 6 weeks ago when moving from a PC to an iMac. I use a 3rd party app, iPodRip, that worked like a charm. Recovered all music, playlists, etc. of the iPod to the Mac, didn't lose a thing. You can find it at versiontracker.com. It's freeware for something like the first 8 or 9 times you use it. Once I had all the music on the Mac, I restored the iPod to read on a Mac & I was up & running. Post back if you have questions.

Windows iPod, Home on Mac

I would like to be able to use my new 80gig on both PCs and Macs. I know that requires me to format it for Windows.
My question, can I make a windows formatted iPod, home on my Mac. I use PCs at work but I own a powerbook. I would like to be able to sync it with all of the stuff on my powerbook, but plug it into iTunes at work or elsewhere.

Just make sure iPod is formatted for Windows and that you enable disk usage, and set it to manually update.

Updating a PC iPod on a Mac

I just switched from a PC to a mac and now need to update the software to make it work with iTunes 5. However, it won't let me because the iPod was originally used on a PC. Is there a way to fix the problem?

Wendy, do you still want to use your iPod on the PC after you update it? If you update it on the Mac, you won't be able to use it again on the PC without special software.
If you want to continue using it on both the Mac and the PC, you could update it using the PC. Download and install the updater from the link below and run it. Connect your iPod only when it tells you to and choose the Update option.

Back up windows ipod on to mac

I have a old ipod also a ipod touch,both were backed up on a windows. Now, I have a i Mac. I would like to use the iMac to back up the ipod, ipod touch and an ipad on it.
How you do that?

Just note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.The direction in my first reply got synced media copied to the new computer.

Yes, but you have a new computer. An iPod can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time. You would need to copy your iTunes library files over from the old computer to the new computer to avoid getting that message. This includes the iTunes Library files and all music.
You can copy iTunes purchases to the new computer from the iPod by clicking on File and then transfer purchases. There are also other programs that can copy non iTunes purchases from the iPod. I have an app called iPod access that works great.
This has nothing to do with the iPod being Windows formatted.

What heck is going on?? 5.1 updates on windows, but not on Mac

I tried several times yesterday to update all of the iPhones with my macbook, but had no luck. I tried again tonight and still no luck. I decided to try my daughters laptop and I had no problems updating 3 of my iPhones. I decided to try again with my last iPhone on my macbook and still just shows it's trying to connect to the server. I stopped the process and hooked it up my daughter's laptop and it's updating with no issues as we speak. What's going on with my mac? I even tried to directly download the ipsw 5.1, but I'm unable to downoad anything on my mac? I've checked my internet connections and everything appears to be normal. This makes no sense at all.

Connecting ipod to new mac book os x from dell windows xp....

Hey, I just bought a new mac book yesterday and finally made the conversion over to apple. I have roughly 6000 songs on my ipod and definetly do not want to lose them. If i plug in my ipod to my new mac book, will I lose all my songs or will they just upload into itunes? If i will lose all my songs, how can I get those 6000 songs onto my new computer without losing them?

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

4). Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Convert Windows ipod to mac; Can I go back?

I read the following on Apple's knowledge info.
"You can convert an iPod formatted for Windows into an iPod for Mac by using the iPod for Mac Software Updater on the Apple website. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Macs. You need Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X 10.1 or later to reformat an iPod for Windows into an iPod for Mac."
Now my question is if I convert a windows ipod to a mac ipod and then can I go back later and convert it from a mac ipod back to a pc ipod?

You mean to restore the iPod. Restore and reset are quite different operations.

After you restore the iPod on the PC, it makes the PC the master.

It worked just fine for transferring my iTunes music file to the mac, but it says that it can't do any software updates for the iPod because it is windows-formatted. First of all, forgive me if this is a repost, as I know I have seen the resolution before, but am unable to find it.
I currently have an iPod 80GB classic, with about 40GB of music on it. I have recently purchased an iMac and want to move to a MAC formatted ipod. That is, connect and manage the ipod in a MAC environment instead of Windows.
I also want to back up all my music on the ipod to my MAC itunes library to ensure my music is all in one place.
Once all is said and done, I want a MAC formatted ipod, and not have lost my music on the ipod by reformatting it.
