Updating Address Book

What happened before when I received an updated address book was an option to update their address. It's gone away now and only option when viewing their address attachment is to add. Any ideas?

Hi,
The details of this person in your address boko are slightly different to what is in the email/attachement.
Of course you've got additional details, but I am referring to the key fields (sorry, I dont know what these are).
Perhaps the perons name has an extra middle initial, or is missnig the midddle initial, or the mobile number is the work phone field, etc but the fields are different and thus it thinks this is a NEW contact.
Best option is to Add the contact and then delete the old one. After all, the new one should have all his details.

• Can't accurately update Address Book from LinkedIn vCard

Hi everybody,
Unlike when I used Outlook for Windows, I have had trouble updating Address Book with LinkedIn vCards. If a contact leaves one company for another and I try to update his information, the new company name and title end up being put into the notes field in Address Book. I asked LinkedIn this and got the following reply:
Thanks for reaching out to us - Sorry to hear that importing your contacts isn't working.
Unfortunately, this feature works best with Windows products, like Outlook and was not designed for use with Apple products.
I find this unacceptable and would love any suggestions as to a plugin or extension to make this work.
Thanks!
Doug

I'm not sure if this will help.
I have saved some sheets in csv format from Excel, but it seems that the import function from the address book doesn't accept the csv extension.
Saving the data in a txt file did solve the issue.
Make sure that your file extension is .txt and that the data is tab of semicolon delimited.

• Always stuck at Updating Address Book

We are in a migration process from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013, now users WHO are migrated to Exchange 2013 cannot download address book manually, stays on processing and bar never starts at all, waited for 2 hours but the same. The other thing is that
at the bottom of Outlook it's always like this "ALL FOLDERS ARE UP TO DATE, UPDATING ADDRESS BOOK. CONNECTED TO: MICROSOFT EXCHANGE" and this is for all users that have been migrated to Exchange 2013. Did I miss some configuration somewhere for the
address book. Where can I start to troubleshoot this issue.

Running the command comes back empty, but I have the "SystemMailbox bb558c35-97f1-4cb9-8ff7-d53741dc928c"
Get-Mailbox -Arbitration | where {$_.PersistedCapabilities -like "*oab*"} | ft name,database
Hi,
According to your further description, I noticed that there is no Arbitration mailbox which is responsible for OAB generation in your Exchange server.
Please run the following command to check all Arbitration mailboxes:
Get-Mailbox -Arbitration | fl name,servername,Database,PersistedCapabilities
If the mailbox "SystemMailbox bb558c35-97f1-4cb9-8ff7-d53741dc928c" is listed here, we can enable OABGen for it:
Set-Mailbox -Arbitration -Identity "SystemMailbox{bb558c35-97f1-4cb9-8ff7-d53741dc928c}" -OABGen $true
Alternatively, we can create a new organization mailbox for OAB generation:
New-Mailbox -Arbitration -Name "OAB Mailbox" -Database “Mailbox Database 2044052308” -UserPrincipalName
[email protected] -DisplayName “OAB Mailbox”
Set-Mailbox -Arbitration -Identity [email protected] -OABGen $true
Then run Update-OfflineAddressBook cmdlet or restart the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Assistant service on Mailbox Role to force OAB Generation.

• How do I update address book on my iMac?

I checked and I have version 6.1.3. Another person in my household is running version 7.1. If I run Updates, the address book is not updating. What's going on? (BTW, I have my address book synched in icloud, if that makes any difference).

What versions of OS X are you and that person running?

• Updating 'Address Book' in iPad 2Why when i , iPhone 5, ad MacBook Pro

Why when I make a change in 'Address Book" on any device; the other devices are not automatically updated?
I have 'Contacts' at the 'On' position on all devices inlcuding Preferences>iCloud, on the MacBook.
Thank you

The best thing to try is, starting with one device, turn off Contacts and then back on and do an update - check it on the Mac to see if it is getting pushed (this is not instantaneous - give it 5 mintues or so). If that doesn't help, then delete the iCloud account from the device and add it back on, check the options to make sure Contacts is still = ON, and try an update again, checking the Mac to see if it gets pushed.
If the one device start pushing to the Mac, double check the other devices to see if it got pushed to them or not. If it did not, then one by one, repeat the process above.

• Using isync for first time to update address book

I just upgraded to Tiger and thought finally I could back up my contacts from my Motorola RAZR V3i.
However the sync process only works one way i.e. updating the phone from the address book on the Mac, and does not import any contacts from the phone.
Is this normal I can't find an answer elsewhere
thx

Synchronising is a two-way process, once all set-up correctly.
From experience I've found its best to start off with your data on the Mac first, although by using the Merge on First Sync option, in theory, you should be able to get your contacts from the phone. This doesn't always seem to work.
I don't know anything about Motorola phones, but if they have an option to Send all Contacts by Bluetooth (as vCards), use that to import your data in Address Book initially.

• Need to update address book for snow leopard

I just recently downloaded the snow leopard to my Mac and now my address book icon says my version 4.1.2 does not work.

I don't see how you could have downloaded Snow Leopard, when it's not available as a download and never has been.
Please explain.

• Mac won't update Address Book from iPod

Should changes made to "Contacts" on my Touch transfer over to "Address Book" on my Mac when I sync? I noticed today that changes I've made on the Mac ARE moving to the Touch, but not vice versa.

Of course they should.
I am at work and don't have my home Mac in front of me so this is a bit from memory... You need to tell it to.
Plug in your iPod touch
In iTunes, click on your iPod and go to the "Info" tab.
Under Contacts there are setting to control this.
let me know...

• Address Book doesn't sync UP to iCloud, but syncs back down..

(Sorry, Winston, and maybe Roger, I must be developing Alzheimer's ..I just cannot understand how this iCloud system works..)
I've searched through hundreds of queries and answers, but cannot find a similar problem ..but maybe I simply haven't looked hard enough.
Question on behalf of my good lady ..and I've been tearing my hair out over this for WEEKS..
She has 3502 contacts in her Address Book on her OS X Lion 10.7.4 MacBook Air. She has two iPhones. They're both running iOS 5.1.1. She has enabled iCloud on ALL these three devices, using her @me.com identity and appropriate password.
She updates Address Book contacts ONLY on her MBA - for sync'ing to her phones - and she does NOT update any Contacts info on her phones in order to have them transferred BACK to her Mac. That's how she prefers to work.
The only way that her Address Book contacts will sync UP to iCloud from the Mac appears to be to select 'All on My Mac' within Address Book, and to Export as vcards to a file on her Mac, and then, in the online iCloud Contacts webpage, to Import that file of vcards. All well and good, but that seems to ignore all her various Groups; everything ends up bundled all into one group. (Perhaps each Group in her Mac's Address Book needs to be separately Exported and then Imported, but surely it shouldn't be as long-winded as that.)
(About 402 of these contacts are not accepted by the online iCloud Contacts, although they seem to fall within the requirements of not being too many, not being too large, etc. But that's a separate problem which I'm still investigating ..maybe the names are formatted incorrectly; I'll keep working on that separately..)
Anyhow: by explicitly Importing all those Address Book contacts into the iCloud Contacts, they then immediately start to get distributed - correctly! - to her iPhones ..but also back into the Address Book on her Mac, thereby DUPLICATING them all in Address Book! (They CAN be seen as SINGLE entries by choosing 'All iCloud'.)
I cannot understand the opaque instructions in all of the iCloud documentation. NONE of the documentation which I've studiously read (online, in System Prefs, in every Help file I can find) seems to indicate a DIRECTION for this iCloud sync'ing.
WHERE - if there is such a place - does one specify that contacts should go only UP FROM the Mac, and not BACK DOWN to the Mac?
There seem to be options only to turn ON sync'ing (or off), but not the DIRECTION of sync'ing, or which device(s) take precedence. (..In iTunes - when sync'ing phones to a Mac with a cable - there's a preference to over-write EITHER the host Mac with data FROM a phone, or to over-write an iPhone's data with data FROM the Mac..)
So I'm asking..
(a) Can one specify a DIRECTION when turning on sync'ing for a device?
(b) With iCloud sync'ing turned ON on a Mac, is there any known reason why Address Book contacts should not send themselves UP to the iCould, instead of having to be manually Imported?
(c) Does one Export Groups individually? ..But what if a name is in more than one Group ..does it get duplicated online in iCloud?
(d) Is there not the intelligence within the iCloud facility for the system to NOT distribute back, or duplicate, contacts to the device which is the SOURCE of those contacts? Should it not do a comparison between iCloud and a device, and then recognise that those contacts already exist on the remote device, and therefore NOT distribute them BACK again to the SOURCE? (..Or am I having too high expectations?..)
Many thanks in anticipation, and I'm so sorry to be such a nuisance if this has already been answered a zillion times before.
(Yes, Winston; she has almost as many iPhones as you have AppleTVs!)
All best wishes,
David.

David, nice to hear from you again, hope you are well.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Address Book.
I believe you have duplicates because you have two sets of contacts. "iCloud" and "On My Mac". Once you have created all your contacts in the iCloud account, you should delete them from On My Mac.
You can move contacts simply by dragging and dropping from one account to the other, you don't need to export them all to the desktop (although doind so will serve as a good back up if all goes wrong). You should note that this copies them though rather than simply move them, so you'll need to delete the old set when you are done.
As for preserving groups from the On My Mac Account, you can't but you can simplify recreating them by copying contacts (drag and drop) from an on my mac group to an empty group in iCloud.
Not sure about the contacts that you are struggling to move.
Many aspects of iCloud are difficult to understand, have a mull through what I've said so far and come back if everything still doesn't fall into place.

• IPod Touch (yet another) syncing problem contacts, address book

I have a new 2nd gen Touch 8g. I am trying to sync to my MacBook Pro. Would like to sync all my contacts and calendar info from my old Palm, but that is not my question today. I am unable to sync my Address Book and iCal information to Contacts and Calendar on the Touch. Specifics:
- OS X is 10.5.6
- iTunes is 8.1, recently updated
- iTouch software is 2.2.1, recently updated
- Address Book is 4.1.1
- iCal is 3.0.6
I can "sync" using iTunes. It backs up the Touch. It syncs the music. It doesn't sync the Address Book or Contacts properly.
History:
- At first, I set it to sync the Address Book and Contacts (not Calendar and iCal). It would go through the sync process until "Updating Contacts with..." It would hang there overnight. This happened when there were 200+ contacts in Address Book on the Mac but none on the Touch. I cancelled after overnight hours and found none on the Touch.
- Deleted all Address Book contacts. Now there were none on either Mac or Touch. Still would spin the "Updating Contacts with..." for hours.
- Set iTunes to sync both Address Book and iCal. Added 1 simple contact in Address Book. Added 1 event in iCal. Synced. The sync completed but nothing was transferred between the Mac and the Touch.
- Added 1 contact in Contacts on Touch and 1 event in Calendar on Touch. Synced. Each still had 1 contact, 1 event, but not the same ones.
- Set iTunes to replace the information on the iPod (one time). The sync completed, and erased the contact and calendar event on the Touch, and put the 1 iCal event onto the Touch (yea!) but not the contact from Address Book (boo!).
- Tried multiple more times. I can add a calendar event on the Touch, but it never appears on iCal on the Mac. I can add a contact on the Touch or in Address Book on the Mac, but the two never sync up to show on the other.
Other details:
- I don't use Google Contacts or Calendar
- I don't use MobileMe (or really know what it is yet)
- I did use iSync to try to sync all my Palm info (not successfully), but stopped trying and reset the sync history, just in case.
- I don't use USB hubs, and I do the sync with just the Touch attached via the cable it came with directly into the MacBook Pro.
- I've read hundreds of posts here and elsewhere. I've restarted programs multiple times. I've updated software. I've tried following the advice of all the posts I could, even if they weren't precisely what I was experiencing.
Does anyone have any brilliant ideas as to what I should try next? I bought this thing to replace my Palm as my PDA, but it won't be any good unless I can sync the darn thing. I've been working on this for almost 3 days straight and am going bug eyed reading all the info on the web. ANY help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I managed to get the sync to work after much shutting down and restarting, of programs and the computer. I cleared the iSync history just in case. I closed programs, etc. Eventually, it just worked and has continued to do so ever since. It is not slow, but rather quick.
All is well.
Now, the conversion from Palm is another story.....

• Address Book 2011 Not syncing with iCloud

Just recently my Address Book stopped syncing with iCloud and I can't figure out why. I have tried logging out and back in to the software and iCloud and signed out of Apple in system preferences. The Address Book software on my iMac 2011 has been a little buggy, in that it keeps showing double entries that are not picked up with "find duplicates." Those duplicates don't show up in iCloud, my iPhone6, my iPad mini (original mini with out ios 8 upgrade) and my macbook pro. I am still running Lion on the iMac. I can't see a way to upgrade or reinstall just the Address Book. I guess the only way to get a new version is to upgrade to Yosemite. I just don't want to do that right now, but I would like my other devices to have my updated Address Book entries from the Address book on the iMac.
Also, when I look at ICloud settings it shows the iPhone6 and Macbook Pro (with Yosemite), but not the iPad or the iMac. I have turned on iCloud on the iPad and I am signed in to iCloud on the iMac through System Preferences.
Any thoughts?

Hi zacimac,

• Address Book Wish List!

Unless it's already possible, anybody know if Apple ever plans on updating "Address Book" to enable the user to password protect an address book and to have multiple address books.... Having multiple sign-ins is not really a solution.

Here's my 2 cents worth:
Allow users of Address Book to --
1. Auto select an address from Address Book by typing in a nickname associated with an Address Card. (i.e. "mom" or "gramps").
2. Set a preferred or default email address for cards in your "ALL" group, just like you can when you select "Edit Distribution List…" from the EDIT menu on a particular distribution group. (Kind of like how you set Favorites on the iPhone in the Phone application)

• 2 iClouds, 2 iPhones, 1 Mac, 1 address book...lion

Hello,
Has anyone here setup using two iCloud accounts (for two different users) on one Mac etc yet? I want to know how it works.
- I have my iPhone, and I sync my calender from iCal to iCloud and my contacts to iCloud (Safari on my Mac and my iPhone with iOS5)
- My girlfriend will be using iOS5 on her iPhone, and sharing my calender (which I will share from my iCloud) and syncing her contacts to her own iCloud (She uses Firefox)
- We currently use the same address book, but with groups setup for my contacts and her contacts. After getting iCloud setup on my iPhone last night, I now have her contacts on my phone too, but I just view me group (which works fine).
My question is will there be any syncing issues when she connects her iPhone up (it's not on iOS5 just yet) and iTunes starts to look and sync at Lion (with iCloud update) address book?
Sorry this is a little confusing, basically, will this work between one mac, two iphones and two iClouds? We don't want to lose our contacts, but we do want to seperate iCloud accounts.
thanks!!

It's all a bit fussy and messy, but I managed to sort it, thanks very much for your help!
When I created the new Apple ID (for me and my girlfriend to share, with groups for me and her contacts seperatley) and imported my achieve in Address Book it really didn't work very well at all, and didn't create the groups, it dumped them into one big list which we defintely wanted to avoid.
I stopped iClouding contacts from the Perferences on the shard iCloud accounts and started again. I then just copied and pasted into new groups which again didn't work perfectly. It took a bit of messing around but it's sorted now.
My iPhone currently has lots of groups in it, but I don't really care to be honest, I am only viewing my own one so it's OK.
I am not going to bothered with Calender, that will be a world of pain. I am just going to share my personal iCloud Calender with my girlfriend, that should work fine I hope...
