Updating an imovie project into Garageband

Hi!
I'm a newbie, and I have an imovie project I imported into garagebandand of course fouund some things I had to fix. Is there a way to reimport it into garageband without losing all the tracks? (I have 10 of them and it's a pain to keep rescoring from scratch!)
Any advice for this confused newbie?
Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

First question is why you would want to export from iMovie to .avi format?
That (.avi) was invented by Microsoft over a decade ago and even they don't support it any longer. They switched to WMP (Windows Media Player) long ago.
Titles (text tracks) are only intended for playback on TV using iDVD or other software. They are rendered as "video" at the frame rate of your project and that is why they look so poor when exported to QuickTime.
If your audience needs a "PC" file you may want to consider http://flip4mac.com and the upgrade(s) they offer.
I use QuickTime Pro to add text to my files. These are vector based and very tiny in file size. An example:

  • Updating old iMovie projects

I'm using the latest version of fcpx (10.2) and I'm trying to move all my old iMovie projects into fcp
I have old iMovie projects on almost every version of iMovie dating including iMovie HD,  iMovie '11, iMovie 10
I'm very confused between the latest iMovie versions.   I believe that iMovie 11 is actually older than iMovie 10?  ('11 referring to the year it came out and 10 relating it to os X  or fcpX?)
I think its the iMovie 11 software that used the iMovie project and iMovie events folders.  I think this older iMovie software expected you to import the iMovie project from the old version earliest version of fcpx? (or export an xml file?)  I think the newer iMovie 10 wants you to export the iMovie project to the latest version of fcpx 10.2?
Is it possible to move a project from the older iMovie (11?)  to the newest fcpx (10.2)?  Do I need to do an intermediary step and upgrade from the older iMovie to the newest iMovie? Do movie trailers work the same way from both iMovie programs if converted first to movie project form?
    Thanks

Hi I had the same issue and fixed it with deleting "UpdatedtoiMovie10" see step 4.
n the Finder, click the Go menu and choose Home.
    Open the Movies folder.
Move the “iMovie Library” file to the Trash.
Note: If you have imported content or created projects with iMovie version 10.0, do not delete this file.
In the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders, you’ll find a file named “UpdatedtoiMovie10.” Move this file to the Trash from both folders.
    Open iMovie.
Choose File > Update Projects and Events.

  • Importing imovie project into Final Cut Pro

Hello I need help getting my HD imovie project into final cut pro. I recored the project in 24p and it's already imported into imovie. What is the best way to get it into Final Cut Pro so that I can edit it further without sacrificing the quality.
Another problem is that I have heard that imovie compresses the video and totally ruins the quality. Is this true? And is this reversible in any way? I have already recorded over all the clips for this project on my camcorder. How screwed am I?
    -Michael

First thing to do is find your original clips that you captured in IMovie. I don't have much experience in IMovie, but see if you can select a clip and control click and choose reveal in finder. If that works, open one of these clips in quicktime player and hit command-i and let us know the format of the clip.
Kind of doubt you'll be able to actually import your project into fcp, but you should be able to recreate it in fcp without too much difficulty.
Let us know what camera you shot and captured from. That may be of some help.
Hopefully someone with more experience in IMovie will speak up, but hopefully this will get us started.

  • How do you import multiple iMovie projects into one iDVD project?

    Hi.
I'm 17, and am trying to create a DVD of when the family went on a cruise. For different places/days, I've created different iMovie projects.
But, when I want to export to iDVD, it only lets me put one iMovie project into one iDVD project?
I've tried dragging the actual iMovie project files into iDVD but that doesn't work.
I know I could export to QuickTime and then drag it into iDVD, but it seems exporting just to iDVD is much quicker, and the quality is better.
Anyone know how I can do this?
    cheers
+P.S. If it helps, it's iMovie '11 with iDVD '09.+

That is not true. You can use them all in one DVD. I have just created my first DVD which has a trailer, a movie with chapters and several different slide shows.
All you have to do is save each project to Media Browser. (Choose Share in toolbar). Open iDVD and choose your theme or no theme. On the right will be all your options such as audio, media photo's etc. Choose your various video's/projects etc and just drag and drop which ones you want to the page and they will automatically put themselves there with the given name of each video/project.

  • Low quality of burned DVD even if I drag&drop iMovie project into iDVD

    Hi all,
I've a iMovie HD project that I want to burn via iDVD (7.0.4).
If I click "Share with iDVD" the quality of the resultung video (which is burned to DVD) is rather poor. As I've read within this discussions, the preferred way is to close iMovie and "drag and drop" the iMovie project into iDVD.
With this way, iDVD (instead of iMovie) will render the movie, which should give a video with far more quality.
Unfortunately, the burned DVD with the "drag and drop" method has the same low quality as the video with "Share with iDVD".
I've done a little research and noticed that the "shared movie" for iDVD (iMovie project->Show package Contents->Shared Movies->iDVD) for a 1:10 video has a filesize of only 32kb!
Is there any way to set the "export" parameters for this "shared movie" (it is a quicktime file)?
The quality of the completed DVD is acceptable if I export the iMovie project to "DV stream" an import this stream into iDVD. But in this case I lose all my chapter markers of the movie ..
Is there any way to export the movie from iMovie HD and keep all the chapter markers for iDVD?
Importing the iMovie HD project into iMovie 08/09 is not an option, as I lose the chapter markers also ..
    Thanks in advice,
    Kind regards.

    Hi,
the iMovie project was created as "DV" project and I imported DV PAL clips. The iDVD preferences are also PAL (25fps) and the quality setting is "professional quality".
I've also tried the setting "best performance" within iDVD (as suggested within this forum), but with the same poor result.
I can see within the iDVD "project info" that iDVD will use "mymovie.mov" within the "Shared Movies->iDVD" of the iMovie project (Show package contents).
As this converted movie is of low quality, I think this is the root of evil.
If I export the movie from iMovie with "Export as DV stream" and import this converted movie into iDVD the quality is ok - but I lose the chapter markers ..
Is there any way to keep the chapter markers?
    Kind regards.

  • How to splice 2 imovie projects into 1 project?

How to splice 2 imovie projects into 1 project?

Select what you want from one project.  Edit - Copy then double-click other project to load it into the time line. Select where you want to add it (default is at end)  and select Edit - Paste.

  • I want to import one imovie project into another one.  In other words, I have created a short sequence in iMovie 11 on one computer, and I want to import it into a project that I am working on, on another computer.

I want to import one imovie project into another one.  In other words, I have created a short sequence in iMovie 11 on one computer, and I want to import it into a project that I am working on, on another computer.  I copied the project files onto a hard drive, and then connected that drive to the Mac that my main project is on, but when I select "import" the files are faint gray -meaning I can't select them.  Help!  I want to transfer a sequence of shots from one iMovie 11 project on one computer, into another iMovie 11 project on another computer.

    Tell me it ain't so!
I wish I could.  The research you've done is correct.
Wether you copy and paste or rebuild the Project from the other computer, you're going to need to get your Evnets copied from the other computer.
The Prjoject files only contain pointer back to the original media.

  • Incorporate existing iMovie project into new, longer one

I have an 8-minute iMovie project, with lost of careful editing (multiple sounds tracks, transitions, etc.)
I need to incorporate it as one section in a longer iMovie project I'm now working on. But when it becomes the one section of a larger project, I have to shorten it in half, to be only 4 minutes.
    Two questions:
    1) How do you insert an existing iMovie project into a new one -- bring over all the pieces at once, with everything in tact (music, transitions, etc.)?
    2) This is a little more complicated. Since I have to boil down the 8 minute piece to 4 minutes, I'd rather not have to go back into the original and do painstaking editing -- which would involve rejiggering transitions, music fades, and all kinds of things. I'd rather export it to Quicktime, bring that into the new, larger iMovie project, where I can crop out parts I don't want and tie togehter the remaining pieces with transitions.
My concern: when I export original 8 minute project to Quicktime, doesn't that compress it? If so, and I bring that already-compressed Quicktime into new, longer iMovie project, when the new one is finished and I export it out to a DVD (end product) -- won't that be re-compressing the already compressed portion?
    Thanks for any insights.

  • Pls advise current info as to combining 3 iMovie projects into one iMovie. Thanks!

Pls advise current info as to combining 3 imovie projects into one imovie.  I will finish with idvd.
I am in a rush today to complete a video for my brother's memorial for tomorrow.  Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, Klaus. I'm just now getting to try your suggestion to copy and paste from timeline rather than drag and drop from clipviewer. Alas, it seems to be choking terribly on the transfer. This video is not a 60 minute movie, either; it's about ten minutes. I has about 60 files to it. I did get to the point where I felt confident enough to empty the trash and save the project, so I assume the clips that are there are not still "attached" to the unedited dvs.
Earlier I tried to export, in the advanced settings, to the full quality dv, but the quality really dropped, way too much for the intended use. I'm pretty much stumped at this point, unless I can hear some other suggestions.
What I might try doing is simply dragging and dropping all the packet contents of the media folder into the other movie's media folder, but then I suspect I'll have to rebuild the darn thing from bits and pieces and it may be like putting Humpty Dumpty back together again...ugh.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to face this challenge, am I? Of course, my lesson learned is to build one dvd's contents in one imovie project. If it weren't for the fact that I need to offer viewers the option to "play movie" (play all the videos as one movie) I'd simply drag each movie into iDVD and do it that way (the dvd showing each video separately).
Would still love to hear of other possible solutions here, before trying some other forum.
    thanks!

  • Combining several iMovie projects into one, time-not space-being the factor

    Hello,
Space is not an issue (large external drive), but I'm trying to figure out the fastest way to combine several iMovie projects into one (so each movie will become a chapter in iDVD). I'm pretty sure there must be a better way than I'm attempting, selecting all the clips in clipviewer, then dragging and dropping to the new project clipviewer. As I've done this, the "time remaining" window keeps growing (started out about 4 minutes, climbed to "92 minutes remaining," then I aborted the move). Details: each movie is about 8-10 minutes long, widescreen, made up of various (sometimes many) dv clips, audio segments, still photos, etc.
I have added dv clips to a project via the media folder (project unopened), but this was a single item and simple to move from trash into the project. In this case, I'm not sure what to move in order to save the entire project intact.
Thanks so much for any help,
    b

  • Can i turn an imovie project into an Mpeg file to work on a Windows System?

Hi is there a way of turning an iMovie production into a standard MPeg format to play on windows operating system???

Once i have created and imovie project i am needing to turn it into an bog standard MPeg that will play within a powerpoint presentation supported by windows media player .mov .avi etc don't work not very techy... The only way i have managed to do this so far is to create a dvd then turn it into MPeg using pinnacle on a windows system but i lose a vast amount of quality
I was saying that if you have the right software you can create MPG, MPEG (MPEG2/MPEG-1, layered audio), M2V/AIFF paired elementary stream clips, VOB (MPEG2/AC3 or MPEG2/PCM), TS MPEG-2 stream files, etc., and you would need decide on which typr of file you wanted. If you want VOB with MPEG2/PCM content, then let iDVD image a file and all you have to do is copy the VOB(s) from the image,

  • Combine two iMovie projects into one iDVD project?

Could someone help me figure out the best way to combine two iMovie (HD 5) projects into one iDVD project? I currently have a documentary with one iMovie project at 1 hour exactly. I am starting a second one and would like all this to go on one DVD eventually. I am especially concerned about what happens with the chapter markers already created in each iMovie project - how is that combined when the two are put together? If there is a link for this info, I'd be happy to read that as well.
    Thank you!

I would combine them by saving each completed imovie (without chapter markers) as a full quality QuickTime movie.
Then start a completely new imovie project and import each of those in to make make one large imovie. (But remember, your DVD will only hold about 120 minutes of footage and that doesn't count the themes).
That's when I would add the chapter markers.
BTW-it's going to take up a lot of disk space to save the movie s and to burn the DVD.

  • Put two imovie projects into one idvd project?

I have been trying for days to do something that seems so simple.
I have two imovie projects with chapters that I'd like to place as two separate movies into a single idvd project. I have tried everything, seems it should be as simple as clicking and dragging from one to the other. But idvd tells me the imovie project isn't prepared for sharing. If I share them to idvd, I get two separate projects. How do I combine them into one?

Best place to combine QT movies is in iMovie itself (that or FCP). However, the following link makes reference to combining two or more iDvd slideshows in iDvd. But one may also add multiple QT movies to the slideshow feature w/in iDvd.

  • More than one iMovie project into one iDVD project??

    Hi,
I am editing several iMovie projects which I had intended to put on one DVD using iDVD.
Can I use iMovie to share several projects to one iDVD project or should I use iDVD to import several (completed) iMovie projects to the one iDVD project?
Can I even have more than one project on in an iDVD project?
I am currently importing a large video file to iMovie so iMovie is inaccessible.
My iMovie projects are video only (no menus, etc. until I import to iDVD).
    Cheers

Well, it is recommended that you use the 'Best Performance' default setting from iDVD's Preferences for movies under 60 minutes to get the best quality.
If you want to put 60-120 minutes on one DVD, you have to select either 'High Quality' or 'Professional Quality' Both will give good results; PQ will take a bit longer to do and is supposed to be higher quality.
I usually make movies just under 2 hours, and I always use PQ. I am pleased with the quality of my movies on DVD disks. However, you should know that I am using iMovie 6 and not any hi-def videos (yet ).
David Pogue explained the process of 'Best Performance' and 'Best Quality' (what the option was before HQ and PQ) like this:
Best Performance option allots "+a fixed, predetermined amount of data to each frame of video...no matter how many minutes of video...A lot of the DVD might wind up being empty--if...the project contains less than an hour of video. But the process will go quickly, and the video will look really great+."
Best Quality option uses "+every micron of space on this blank DVD+" because it analyzes "+the amount of video...included+," and divides "+it into the amount of space available on the DVD. The amount of information used to describe an individual frame of video will vary from project to project, and it will take...a lot longer to burn the DVD because+" of "+so much analysis. But at least+" you "+will get two hours of great-looking video per disc.+"
If your videos are short, you might want to try all the encoding options and see which gives you the best quality.
