Updating an iphoto library
I just purchased a new iMac and I'm trying to move my iPhoto 2 Library into the iPhoto '08. I copy over the library and it tells me I need to update it. The blue progression bar pops up and it looks like its working for a couple seconds and then stops moving. I thought maybe it just takes a long time and let it work overnight, but nothing.
I've searched the threads and have tried everything, including the BatChmod thing, but end up with the same result.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First see this Apple KB doucment about the new iMacs: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306305. It might have a bearing on the conversion.
Do you still have the iPhoto 2 application and its library on the other Mac? If so, open it with V2 and make sure you have no unusual characters in keywords or albums, i.e. &, !, etc. Also do a rebuild of the library with V2. Then copy the rebuild library folder into the Pictures folder of the new iMac and run BatChmod on it as you did before. This is to assure all of the files are properly accessible to the new owner. Then launch iPhoto 7.0.2 and give it another go.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Several months ago, I kept getting prompted to 'update' my iphoto library. When I finally clicked on the 'update' button, it 'greyed out' ALL of my photos. Now ALL of my photos are grayed out and I can't see ANY of my pictures unless I click on each grayed out photo individually and open them, ALL of the thumbnails are greyed out. It is THE WORST!! I have no idea how to fix this problem and its been MONTHS AND MONTHS of *** pain. Anyone?? Please help!!!
Thanks so much!!!Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database
and please tell us what version of iPhoto and of the OS you have

How to "Smart Update" an iPhoto Library Folder
Hi:
Searched the archives but didn't find a thread which quite addressed this exact scenario (but if there is one, please let me know):
I want to occasionally "Smart Update" the iPhoto Library folder on my wife's iMac, so that it matches the "master" iPhoto Library folder on my PowerMac, since any new pictures we take all get imported onto my machine -- first for editing (in PS Elements) and then organizing (extensive captioning, Keyword sorting, etc.) using iPhoto.
While I can simply copy the 8-9GB folder onto an external drive, then move that drive upstairs, connect it to the other machine, and copy that entire folder over while erasing the earlier version (all for the sake of say 50MB worth of new and/or modified images), it would obviously be much easier if I could just "Smart Update" (to use the SuperDuper! backup app term) the receiving folder so it matched the master one, and did that smart updating over my existing wireless AirPort network.
The iPhoto option of Sharing my master library is unfortunately too slow via the wireless network to be a practical alternative.
I know about the prohibitions against manually mucking around with any iPhoto Library folder via the Finder, but in this case, would a "Smart Updated" iPhoto Library folder function correctly (i.e. the same as the master folder from which it was "cloned"), or would additional "application support" files also have to be copied from the master machine?
I would do a test using my registered copy of SuperDuper!, but unfortunately it's a volumes-only solution. I've always wished that Apple's Finder offered a "Smart Update" option when copying folders to a location where a folder by the same name already exists (in Leopard -- please?), but failing that, what 3rd-party apps (freeware would be nice!) should I try to test out this workflow?
Thanks,
John Bertram
Toronto, CanadaJohn:
To add to TD's post, the Feb. issue of MacWorld has a review of several backup applications. I believe it is online at their site. This will work only if your wife does not make any changes, i.e. add new photos, delete photos or add albums, etc.
If you wife uses iPhoto for making slideshows, etc., your only option is to use iPhoto Library Manager to add new rolls to your wife's library like this.
Do you Twango?

How do I update my iphoto library to a newer version
Today I upgraded my desk top Mac to the Maverick 10.9.5 operating system. It appears to be installed correctly, however it has blocked out my iphoto library. It says I can not use my current iphoto library version 9.2.1 with the new Maverick 10.9.5 system. I went to icloud and it says I must update my iphoto library but when I press "update" I am not shown any updates for the iphoto library. How do I gain access to my old iphoto in this new operating system? Is there a new version of iphoto that is compatible with Maverick 10.9.5?
Thanks for the info Larry I have now upgraded my iphoto library to the newer version, unfortunately I did not have my computer backed up before installing Maverick and the new photo library so now I can't view the majority of my pictures. No particular pattern to what is or is not visible. Some photos taken in 2011 are visible, others are not. Same for images taken in 2014. I should have known better because I've been thru this process of updating in the past, so I don't have anyone to blame but myself. Apparently the images are still on my computer because the info button in iphoto shows the count as including them. I just can't view them. Shame on me.

I downloaded Iphoto 11 9.2 from the apps store (was on iphoto '09 before version 8.x) and when opened it for the first time it tried to update my photo librery and ended up corupting it to the extreme that I had to get a backup from time capsule and downgrade my iphoto version. I spent yesterday 6 hours at the genius bar in an apple store and they were not able to provide me with any other solution. In the emantime, I have to forget about about photo streaming... Any idea, is this a bug that somebody knows how tp fix?
In fairness, this isn't an issue in iPhoto 11 but one in your Library. Some file or other in there is damaged and that's what causes the crash during the upgrade.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
Why can't I open photos after updating an iphoto Library on new computer?
I have saved a 13,000 photos from my old Mac onto a hard disc, and am now trying to import those photos onto a new Mac computer.
When I copied the 2012 iPhoto Library onto my new computer, a prompt came up to tell me that the Library needed to be updated in order to be used on this computer. So I followed the steps and it seems to have successfully updated itself. But see all the photos when I scroll through the Library... but, when I try to click to open it, I get a HAZARD sign -- triangle with a big exclamation mark.
Please, can someone advise how I get my old photos onto my new computer?
Thanks. CorinnaThat sign turns up when iPhoto loses the connection to the actual file.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Please help, Iphoto crashes when trying to update my iphoto library
i recently upgraded my operating system to Lion OS x 10.7.3, and I bought the IPhoto 11' (9.2.1) from the app store. Now it crashes when I try to open after telling me it needs to update my library (version 8.1.2). It starts updating, but then crashes. I have tried rebuilding my library with IPhoto Library Manager, so I can get the program to work with this, but it also crashes in the attempt to rebuild. I can open the program with an empty library, but then I can't get to my old photos. I have also reinstalled Iphoto, without this helping. And I have tried to find these "receipts", and have deleted these. I also have deleted the QuickTime 7, which I still had, and I'm now only running the QuickTime Player 10.1. Now I have to ask you for help. Here is a copy of the first part of the crash report:

Yosemite update: my Iphoto library is GONE.
After updating my MacBook Air to OS X Yosemite, iPhoto wouldn't open so I had to update it to a later version of it. However, I had over 3000 pictures in my library and now it seems I can't find them anywhere. I tried rebuilding the database, I ran the iPhoto Library Manager using the rebuild function and I checked inside the folders in the Library and Images, but they aren't there. What can I do to recover these photos?
Although the Time Machine was already installed before updating the operational system, it wasn't running, so I can't access the old database. And I haven't done any backups - I tried once but it didn't work.
Is there any possibilities of recovering my iPhoto and Photo Booth images?
Thank you,

If I update my iphoto library are my photos in danger?
I updated my macbook with a maverick and iPhoto was no longer working so I updated to the latest iPhoto as well. Now when I try to open iPhoto it gives me this message: "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade" and then just something about how large libraries may take up to an hour to upgrade. It sounds alright but I just wanted to make sure, will my photos and videos be safe if I proceed with the upgrade?
Not unless something goes wrong - which is why you always backup prior to updating/upgrading - simply backup your iPhoto library and upgrade - unless you have other computers with old versions (previous versions) of iPhoto then you have no problem - as long as you are only accessing your library from one system then you do not have a previous version and there is no problem

Yosemite update and iphoto library
I Updated to yosemite 10.10.2 and iphoto requested that I upgrade my library. i was then cued to repair the library (which was hosted on an external hard drive). Now iphoto opens and it is linked to the correct library, but it says it is empty. The file is 300+ gb but no photos are appearing. I tried to repair permissions and I also downloaded iphoto library manager. Nothing has worked and I don't have a recent time machine backup to revert to. how do I save 5+ years of photos and videos?
That unfortunately is the result of a very nasty bug that has not been fixed by Apple - the best solution is to restore your backup from before it occurred but you have made the bad decision not to always have a current backup - there has been one post that reports to resolve this - I have not tested it and can not vouch for it but here it is
Re: Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6 upgrade, large photo library is not recognised.
It does make sense

Updated to iphoto 11, can't rebuild library
Hi all!
I think I have a big problem on my hands, and am hoping someone has an answer. I have been using iPhoto 9 with no problems, and have my iphoto library stored on an external harddrive. It has about 20,000 pictures and a handful of videos (cell phone quality). Last night I decided to upgrade to iPhoto 11 for the AVCHD compatibility. I downloaded it from the app store, attempted to run it, and got the message that I needed to update my iphoto library. I allowed it to do that, but it stopped midway with the message that it needed to repair permissions. I again allowed it to do that, but it was unsuccessful. I came here and did some searching, and then tried to repair permissions by starting iPhoto with command+alt. That was unsuccessful.
At this point, I strted to get nervous, so I made a duplicate copy of my iPhoto library on my external harddrive. It was at that point that I noticed my library was only 4.47 GB. Panic has now set in, because there is no way a library of 20,000+ could be that small, right?? I have never used Time Machine (i know, horrible), but have been slowly making DVD backups of 2-3 months at a time. I am nowhere near to done, and would loose quite a bit if something has happened to my library.
Following advice from these boards, I have also tried to command+option start iPhoto and rebuilding the database. However, as soon as it starts, it stops again with the error that I need to update my library. When I allow it to update my library, that stops with the error that I need to repair permissions, and then it can't do that and quits. It's one big vicious cycle. I've also tried the iPhoto Library Manager that some have suggested downloading, but the latest version said it was for iPhoto 7.something and earlier.
Can anyone tell me what to do next? And is there any way that my entire library is still somewhere, intact??
THANKS in advance!
(I'm currently running OS X 10.9)Last question first: there's no choice really. A USB/Firewire or Thunderbolt diks formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
My worry about the 80k photos is that you're importing one library into another. Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
As for Q1, I don't know if WIndows can reliably work with such a drive. Macs can work with a couple of formats but not iPhoto or Aperture.
Once the that new library is in, and if it's a mess, as I suspect, then trash it. Copy the Library again from the NTFS disk and try rebuild it:

Moving Iphoto library to external HD and updating
Ciao
I just bought the latest macbook pro and as I now only have 500gb i need to start storing my photos in an external HD. I think the best way to do that is to use Export. am I correct? The problem is that i have other photos to then import, I do I keep updating the iphoto library once it is in the HD? Do i connect the external HD when I have new photos and import photos as I did so far but it will now start importing them in the HD drive instead than the laptop? Finally, is there a better software then iphoto to use to store and acces photos from an external HD?
thanks heaps!!
ErminiaI find it hard to find them in Iphoto.
iPhoto - and this is true of all the alternatives both free (like Picasa) and paid for (like Aperture sand Lightroom) - is a database. Every database is exactly as good as the data that you put into it. With iPhoto you can search on any text associated with a photo - title, filename, date, camera model etc etc - plus you can add keywords, edit lots of metadata to make it more searchable for your purposes. This is the same in the other apps too. But if you don't put the work in by making your categories then there is no app that can help you find a single photo more easily, You're always going to be flicking through thumbnails of images.
So, frankly, if you're not going to build the Library there is no better app.
Here's a canned answer I use to suggest some of the organization features in iPhoto.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me. -
Software update lost photos in iPhoto library
I have read many threads but still have yet to find the golden answer.
No, my time machine was NOT working so no back-up.
I have spent 2 days recovering some from Stellar Phoenix.
Is there anything left to do? Are my photos from the last 3 years gone, gone, gone?
Don't understand why after the disasterous update, the iPhoto Library reverted back to several years ago to albums, photos that I had deleted many years ago but precious recent family photos have disappeared!
If anyone has found THE ANSWER to this horrible Apple disaster, I would love your input and direction.
Thank you!
susanlibrary is located on desktop/applications
No, that should be the iPhoto application, not the iPhoto Library. By default the library should be located in your Pictures folder.
Once you locate the library apply the fixe below:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library â Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory. -
IPhoto Library Locked after update
Hi. I recently purchased a MacBook Air, which I've networked to my iMac. When trying to open my iMac iPhoto Library through iPhoto on my MacBook Air, I received a message saying that I needed to update the current version of the iPhoto Library on my MacBook Air in order to view the photos. So I followed the instructions in the dialogue box and updated the software (which took almost 8 hours). Now, the software on my Air is iPhoto 9.1 and the software on my iMac is 8.1.2. When trying to open iPhoto from my iMac directly, I now receive an error message stating "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have permissions to make changes to it." I searched through iPhoto Help topics initially and followed the suggestion to open the "Rebuild Photo Library" window by holding down option and control when opening iPhoto, and then selecting "Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions". No errors where found, however, a message appeared indicating that i needed to update my iPhoto Library software (as it did initially with my MacBook Air). However, this time it did not prompt me to update the software from the dialogue box, and when trying to update the software, no updates were found.
Any suggestions? You opened your Library with iPhoto 9.1.
The Library was upgraded to a v9 format. You were warned +before this happened+ that you would no longer be able to open the Library with an earlier version. You went ahead anyway.
Now, you have a v9 Library and are trying to open it with a v8 iPhoto on the iMac. As warned, it can't open it.
To upgrade from v8 to v9 requires a purchase of an iLife 11 disk.

494 com.apple.iPhotoI posted this on another thread, but it appears the workaround should work in your case also. Try this...
From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. Unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old).
