Updating an older iPod touch

iPod touch (1st gen, I think--no camera on it) needs to be updated via hard wire USB. I connect it to my older PowerBook G4. After syncing, I click on Update, and a pop up says 'your iTunes 9.2.1 is up to date'. I'm not on the iTunes update page, I'm I'm the iPod update page.
Older system, but it should all still work together.

If your iPod is 1st generation, it cannot run iOS 4, so ...
However, if your iPod is a later version (that can run higher versions of iOS), remember that the latest version of iTunes requires Mac OS 10.5.8 or later.
The 2nd gen Touch can go as high as iOS 4.2.1, but I don't recall (and cannot find) which version of iTunes would be required for iOS 4.2.1.
The 3rd and 4th gen Touch both require the latest version of iTunes, which in turn requires OS X Lion (which I assume is OS 10.5.8. I'm not a Mac user.)
So if your iPod can run a later version of iOS, it may need a later version of the Mac OS before you can get that iTunes and then in turn, the iOS. That's why you see the iTunes update message.
If your iPod really is a 1st gen, then you probably don't need to worry, since that iPod cannot go higher than iOS 3.1.3. Othwerwise, then it will be for you to decide whether you want to upgrade both the Mac OS and iTunes and then the iPod.

  • Can I update my older ipod touch to play new games that require ios 4.3?

Can I update my older ipod touch to play new games that require ios 4.3?  After I purchased games for my son's ipod, they would not upload due to ios.  How can I update that without purchasing a new touch?

iOS 4.3 requires a third generation or newer iPod touch; you don't need to buy a brand new device in any case.

  • Updating a older ipod touch

I have a second generation iPod Touch that is in need of some serious updates! The computer that it was originally synced too is a dead computer but my device needs updates so how can I update the device since I can not sync it to the original computer? Is it true that if I plug it in to my new laptop it will get erased? I have something like 471 songs on it amongst other files i'd rather not lose. Can anyone tell me what to do?

Yes, your iPod can only be used with one computer/iTunes library at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, its contents will be erased and replaced with contents from the new iTunes library.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabilng the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then connect your iPod Touch and when it appears in iTunes right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering different software availbable to assist you with this task.

Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

  • TS3694 How do I update my older Ipod touch from 2.2 to 4.2? When I try to update from Itunes I get a -1 error code

Thanks for any help you can provid.e

A -1 error code often indicates a hardware problem, but it can also indicate an inability of iTunes to connect to the update server due to being blocked by security software on your computer. For help with that possibility, see:
    Troubleshooting security software issues
If that fails, try updating from another computer. If that still fails, your iPod may have a hardware failure.
Note that if you have a first-generation iPod touch, it can only be updated to iOS 3.1.3, and that update is not free.

  • I have an older Ipod Touch, I bought a new one and the Itunes on my computer is too old to recognize my new Ipod Touch and cannot be updated.  Is there a creditable software program I can use to get all my old music from my old iPod Touch to the new one?

I have an older iPod Touch, I bought a new one and the Itunes on my computer is too old to recognize my new iPod Touch and Itunes cannot be updated.  Is there a creditable software program I can use to get all my old music from my old iPod Touch to the new one?  It is my understanding that the music cannot be saved onto my new iTunes, b/c I did not have iCloud. I have over 2,000 songs I just cannot part with. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help some how!!  THANKS!

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

Are you willing to buy a newer iPod? How about the 4g @ 16gb for $199* usd or the 5g @ 32gb for $299*.

  • HT4623 How to Update software on older iPod Touch

I have an older iPod Touch with software version3.1.3(7E18).  The device does not give the option to update under settings and the Summary in iTunes says that it is updated so I need to know how to get it updated? The referenced article gives only these two options. Can it be updated or is it to old?  Many apps require ios4.0 and above so it limits my access to many apps.  Any answers, suggestions or direction would be much appreciated. Thanks!

im also unsure of when the last update was ive only just found it again

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Unless you have a 2nd generation iPod Touch, in which case 4.2.1 is the highest possible.

  • I am trying to restore an older iPod Touch, but do not have the passcode.  I am getting an error message saying that I need to free up some space, but I cannot because I don't have the passcode and have never synced this device to my account.  Help..

I am trying to restore an older iPod Touch, but do not have the passcode.  I am getting an error message saying that I need to free up some space, but I cannot because I don't have the passcode and have never synced this device to my account.  Help..

If it is asking for the screen-lock passcode then:
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • New calendar and older iPod Touch

Since the "old" calendar will be de-activated next month, I will no longer be able to sync my first generation iPod Touch to the new calendar. I use the old calendar now on my intel iMacs, MacBook Pro, iPad 2 and my old iPod Touch. Everything works well, but there is no software download available to upgrade the older iPod Touch to sync with my newer stuff after May 5. Basically my iPod Touch becomes a music player; I need the calendar function and do not feel the justification of buying a new iPod Touch when I already have one that works well and cost a lot of money when I bought it three years ago. Why can't Apple just leave things as they are? We have the choice of which calendar we want to use, and they are taking that option away with utter disregard for those of us who have already spent our $$$$ for an iPod Touch and still need to be able to use it. I urge Apple to either offer a software upgrade or to just leave the old calendar turned on. Have a little respect for your customers.

You might be able to do it if you can generate/sync you calendar with a Google calender and set up the iPod to use an exchange account for Google. Google exchange account syncs via wifi and is supported by iOS 3 and later. See:
