  • Updating ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB

    Hello All,
I have a early 2008 Mac Pro Quad-Core 2.66 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB dual DVI. I would like to update to a newer card and was wondering what is compatable with my machine. I have 12GB of ram and I do video editing and gaming on the off time. I've seen whats out there and I read that there is only a couple of modles that is compatable with my 32bit system. I am running dual monitors so I need a dual DVI setup.
Can someone suggest a decent card that's not going to bust the bank too much. Something that will run what I need to without having to fork over $1,000 for the latest and greatest. or maybe the lowest to the highest price point.
    Thanks in advance.
    Johnny 5

you would be much happier with Apple's ATI 5770 $250. You do not have a 32-bit system. You don't even have 32-bit EFI (firmware).
You can spend more for higher end cards.
12GB RAM - FBDIMMs have gotten cheaper and better if you are in the market 2x2GB $30

  • IMovie 10.0 Oct 22, 2013 won't install on my Mac Pro 2008 with OS X 10.9.  Software Updater says "Your computer's video card does not meet the minimum system requirements".  I have ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB.  What card SHOULD I have?

After installing Mavericks on my 2008 Mac Pro (10GBRAM, several HDs, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) Software updater says there is an update available. iMovie  Apple   Version 10.0   Released Oct 22, 2013.
So I click the UPDATE button
Software Updater puts up a dialog that says "Your computer’s video card does not meet the minimum system requirements".

  • Resetting a video card?  (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT)

So here's my issue. I am trying to connect a secondary monitor to my mac pro (10.5.8). The card in the machine is a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. The only port that seems to work on the card is "#2" (or the left port while looking at the card from the back of the machine).
Both monitors work when plugged into #2 so I know the problem is not with the monitors/cables. This leads me to believe the card has some issues. I used a secondary screen on this machine about a month ago and had no problems. Not to say the card isn't bad, but is there any way to reset this card or flush out some sort of cash/preference to see if that works?
I have done the obvious "Detect Displays", and have flushed the PRAM of the machine, I've tried booting it up with no screens, just one screen, etc. I've tried booting with one screen hooked up to port #1 and it never get any signal so I'm thinking it's a dead port unless I can somehow "refresh" this. System Profiler just shows whichever screen is connected to port #2 and "No display connected" for whatever is in port #1
Any ideas? I've done just about everything I can think of. I tried installing the firmware update too for the card, but on trying to do so it said that I couldn't because I was already running the latest firmware.

ok walter, we gonna help you no problem.  maybe try shutting down your mac pro and
using some compressed air and clean that out, especially the  ATI Radeon  2600. Dust bunnies love the video cards. then restart, open up disk utility and repair permissions
if you can. If not,  then yes, your video card is probably dying. Go to the Apple at the corner of your screen and click on "About this Mac" and it should tell you what kind of Mac Pro you have. As far as I know the ATI 5770 would be a good replacement for your ATI 2600. Apparently they were known to collect dust pretty easily, or so I was told. do you have Applecare? otherwise, I think it's gonna be around $300. Luckily installation isn't too hard. Oh, and you're probably going to need to have 10.6 already installed on your Mac Pro, I think
    well, enough

  • Multiple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards in a Mac Pro

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with screen spanning with multiple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards. What I'm looking to do is super widescreen presentations with keynote and I need more pixels. Right now I use the Matrox Dual and Triple head to go GXMs to achieve this because they make the computer see multiple monitors as one giant display but I am limited to 3840x1200 (dual 1920x1200) I was wondering if multiple video cards would also see the displays as one giant desktop?
It works on a PC but then I have to use PowerPoint (ugh). Any help or suggestions with this? Thanks in advance.

Multiple graphics cards will make the displays act as one large desktop, but when an application is set to full screen mode, it usually will just use one display. If the application is run in window mode, you should be able to move and enlarge (by dragging the lower-right corner) the window to use all displays, but there will be a window border (and menu bar on one display). You could zoom the display slightly to move the border off-screen. There is a setting in Zoom Options of "Universal Access" system preference to stop the zoomed image from moving unless the pointer reaches an edge.

  • IMovie 10 on an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB?

Will iMovie 10 ever be installable on an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB?

They updated iMovie to 10.0.1 so it will work with these Mavericks machines:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6023
"Installing iMovie (2013) previously required a computer with an OpenCL-capable video card. This requirement was removed, and you can install iMovie version 10.0.1 on any Mac with OS X Mavericks."

And if so what would be the best way to get my OS and graphics card up to speed? I appreciate yoiur reply. I'm also at Lion 10.6.8
Since I have other important software I haven't wanted to upgrade the OS but I will if I like the new FCP.

    Hi thanks for responding.
I downloaded the 30 day trial version and it will not let me open FCP X. Everytime I attempt to open the trial version I get a message that says,
"This system does not meet the minimum system requirements for graphics cards. For more information on      minimum system requirements, visit the Tech Specs page on the Final Cut Pro website."
When I look at the specs for FCP X, I don't see the ATI Radeon 2600 as a graphics card that can be used by FCP X. That's why I'm looking to upgrade, at least my graphics card for starters.

  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT - HDMI signal loss to LCD TV

I have a new Mac Pro 2008 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT connected to a Sharp LC-42D64U 1080p TV via a DVI to HDMI cable. If I turn the TV off or change the input from the computer to TV and back I get an error message that an incompatible signal is being sent from the output device. Unplugging and plugging cable back in does not reset. I have to hard power off the computer for the signal to be corrected. The Sharp is the only "monitor" connected and nothing else is connected to it.

    Thanks for suggestion.
So it must be a real problem, if a company decided to build a device to sell that could take care of it.
What a joke, I am pretty sure this problem is due to the junk ATI card in the machine. There isn't even a support listing on ATI for the card (with mac). However when you search for the problem it was prevalent in a lot of the cards going back to 2005. All of the support responses were the next round of drivers will fix it.

  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO --is there another option?

I want a new iMac (I love iMacs)-- but with a better graphics card than the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO.
Can it be switched out or upgraded?
The ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO is a low end 3D graphics card with a street value of $60 and a very horrible review from CNET when compared to other graphics cards for 3D. Though it may shine for HD video DVD's -it's apparently extrememly subpar for 3D work.....
    I'd like a top-notch graphics card in a new 24" iMac....

  • Best option for replacing a faulty ATI Radeon x 2600 XT 256mb

My graphics card has just packed up, and I am struggling to find anybody at the Apple Technical Support service to give me a straight answer.
I am not a gamer, and only require a card that will allow me day today use and for general camcorder editing (novice level).
I had an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT - standard install. in my MacPro (early 2008) 2.8Ghz, Dual Quad Intel chipset, OSX 10.6 (snow leopard).
Can anyone recommend the best option for ATI card, as I have read theyh perform better than the Nvidia cards.

I'd get ATI HD Radeon 4870 Mac Edition from Apple.
The GT is more like spare or for 3 monitors. Why or how Nvidia got that card to be adopted as the OEM standard in a workstation, and not say GTS/GTX 200 series is, beyond me. One year ATI, next year Nvidia gets the "prize" seems to be the order of the day.
Nvidia drivers have been a problem for Apple for years, the GTX 285 would do some serious damage to 3D and CS4/5. Two dual width card design the way a Quadro CX handles CS4 for Windows to do realtime image rendering instantly.
I wouldn't flash unless you like to dabble or want to learn. In which case a 1GB card would make more sense.
Surprised though the manager didn't steer you toward the 4870.

  • Second ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Won't install

I purchased a second ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card from VisionTek (the same card pre installed in my early 2008 mac pro) so as to run a third monitor.  I assumed because the drivers are already loaded and i knew that the card was compatible that it would be an easy plug and play situation.
However, when i popped the card in and turned on my mac, i got the grey screens of death (from the first and original card) and then a crash notice (where the screen dims and it tells you to manually turn off the computer).
i installed the new card in the first slot to see if it would even register, and it did not.
some specifics:  the new card is slightly different in design, physically.  the fan is slightly larger (though it doesnt appear to physically be touching anything, it certainly doesnt appear to be too big for the machine), and when i install it into the PCIe slot, it does seem to slide in ok but stops not even 1/8 of an inch from clicking in.  i can put the 2-screwed retainer bar on but with just the slightest force.  it doesnt appear to be fully seated, but it seems like the connection should be sufficient.
any help would be massivly appreciated.  the card should work right?  i've definitley confirmed that it is compatible, is it simply a physical problem with the card?
thanks in advance for any insight or advice.
alternatively, can anyone suggest if this is something worth spending $40 on a non apple care apple support call?  or a trip to the apple store with (ugh) computer in tow?
    thanks!

Whatever you purchased, likely it does not have Apple ROM.

  • Replacement Program - ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video issue

    Mac Pro (Early 2008):
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card with distorted video or no video
    Last Modified: March 15, 2011
    Article: TS3630
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3630
    Symptoms
Apple has determined that certain ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards sold for use in Mac Pro computers between approximately January 2008 and May 2010 may experience distorted video or no video.
    Products Affected
    Mac Pro (Early 2008)
    Resolution
If your Mac Pro experiences distorted video or no video issues and has an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card in it, you will need to bring your computer's serial number and the graphics card into an Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Retail Store location for verification and to exchange the affected graphics card for a replacement.

The replacement process as stated here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3630
    is not correct.
Here is my first hand experience:
Have had the intermittent problems as described almost since the computer was new. After many calls to applecare and ROM upgrades, software upgrades and reinstalls, new boot drive - problem persisted until last week -now monitor stays on black screen on startup.
Called local Apple store as described in support page - they know nothing about it and you cannot talk to a tech on the phone - have to make appt. Asked the receptionist to please describe problem to tech and see if they might be able to help before I take the time to make appt. I was told that they don't handle that here - go to an outside service center. Of course its Friday and the outside service is closed until Monday. Call another apple store and make an appointment - they seam more willing to help.
Follow the instructions and remove board and take it with Mac serial number to store.
I am told that they will not release the replacement board unless they install it themselves in my computer. I politely point out that the service doc states otherwise - no dice. Tech orders the board - won't know until Monday what delivery schedule is - he guesses 2-3 days and they can install when it comes in.
    Lesson learned.
You can't trust what apple says in a tech document - maybe you can't believe anything they say. Frustrating part is that you can't talk to anyone to get a straight answer until you nail someone down in person - and how do I know that the tech told me the right thing. After all, doesn't corporate dictate policy? I got the policy from the corp site. So which is right?
Do you think they would reimburse me if I went out and purchased a new board and did the replacement myself?
"If you believe you have paid for repair or replacement because of this issue, contact Apple regarding a refund."
I highly doubt it based on what the tech said - but who should I believe?

  • 10.5.5 + PowerMac G5 w/ ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) Bad combo.

10.5.5 is not displaying video properly. Elgato seemed to have narrowed it down to a specific computer setup with an OpenGL change from the 10.5.5 update.

My screen shot is the one used in the knowledgebase document. I now see that Apple DVD Player and flip4mac in quicktime have the same look. The audio is fine. VLC can play all of the files with no problem.
If you have the same setup:

The fastest way (which will take a while) is to:
    1) Make sure you have an up to date backup with time machine.
    2) Boot from your Leopard install disc or disc that came with your computer.
    3) When choosing an install method you can choose an archive and install or erase and install.
    4) After the OS is installed it will ask you if you want to restore files from another drive, partition, mac or time machine.
    5) Choose time machine and get your files restored.
    6) Once the mac is started up.
    7) Go here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html and download the 10.5.4 combo update.
8)You then need to use software update to install all of the updates that came after 10.5. UNCHECK the 10.5.5 Combo Update. You can even select to ignore that update by checking the box next to so that it is selected and then selecting ignore update from the update menu in the menu bar.
I have not tried using Time Machine to go back an OS version. I will experiment with that.
I can also tell you how to clone your drive to another drive using the same DVD as above and two hard drives.
    I hope this helps.

  • Adding a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 512. Is it compatable?

I will be purchasing a Mac Pro soon. As you all know it comes with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT w/256mb. Being that I am a PC user I have in my possession a Dell gift card. Now, at the Dell online store I am able to purchase another ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT for less than half of adding a second card at the time of purchase, but this one comes with 512mb. I'm not 100% sure but by comparing images at Mac and ATI, I think the two cards are manufactured by the same company which is VisionTek. Does any body know if these two cards will work together or even if the 512 will work at all?I have researched ATI and they don't even aknowledge the 2600 as a Mac compatable card. I have tried calling Mac, they said come here.

The Dell card will not work with OSX. How many displays do you have? Extra graphics cards are only useful if you have more than two displays. They will not make things run faster.
