Updating computer files from IPod.
I have a new computer (IMAC) - but have old windows-based IPod with great music which I would like to update to my computer files. How do I do this to the Windows side of the IMac? Can I transfer music files to the Itunes on the Imac's apple side? Is this confusing?
Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. So you can get your Mac to read the iPod directly. As to getting the stuff off the iPod and onto you Mac...

how to transfer file from ipod touch to i tunes. i have files in my ipod , ut itunes is new so its telling if u sync the ipod all the files will be replaced but no files in the itunes.. so kindly help me how to transfer the files from i pod to itunes......
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

GETTING FILES FROM IPOD TO HARDDRIVE
I WANT TO RETRIEVE FILES FROM IPOD BUT ITS LINKING COMPUTER IS NOT AROUND.
I ASSUME THIS CAN NOT BE DONE AT ALL, IS THAT RIGHT?
PLEASE RESPOND!the short answer is no. the long answer has to be yes, because the music is stored on the ipod. i believe it is stored in invisable folders on the ipod and it may be possible to get them off it. how this system works im not sure. there are all sorts of costly programs to do this that i have seen. your best bet is to try to view the invisable/ hidden files on the ipod and copy what looks right

Retreiving files from iPod post-computer crash
My G5 crashed last week and so I had to reinstall all applications. My iPod however still has all of the files from my library pre-crash... how can I retreive them?! I have tried the manual transfer but can't access the iPod's files. Help! Thanks!
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.

Transferring files from iPod to new computer.
My old computer died, and it is the only computer authorized to run my iTunes files. The new computer has itunes 8 installed on it. I would like to transfer the files on my ipod to my new itunes, but i do not know how. I have heard about third-party resources that i can use to transfer these files, but i would prefer to not use any of these because i do not want to get a virus or let in spyware. If a third-party resource is the only way i can access the files on my iPod nano, then i would like it if you could suggest a safe, virus and spyware free resource. Can you help me? Please help i really would appriciate it. Thanks!

Below you will find articles to assist you today
Step 1: Download and install iTunes on Vista. Please keep in mind Vista has 2 possible versions depending if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit of Vista. You can find this out by right click on Computer and selecting properties.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ (32 bit)
http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_0_2_for_Windows_64bit (64 bit)
Step 2: Authorize new computer
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
Step 3: Transfer iTunes purchases from iPod into iTunes
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Keep in mind if you have any content not from the iTunes Store on the iPod it can not be transfered back via this method. You will need to reimport the files from their original source back into iTunes. -

Updating music files from itunes to ipod
hi,
i'm having troubles with my 4gb nano.
i'm using manually manage my files.
i've dragged and dropped music files from itunes to ipod.
but when i change the id3 tags of those files in itunes, then "update my ipod" from the file menu,
it does not update (with the names, details etc) of those same files onto my ipod.
is this meant to be?
do i have to manually drag the "new" detailed music files again?
thanks for the helpOK so let me ask the basic question you failed to include in your post.
First question is how is your iPod set up with respect to syncing with iTunes? Is it set up to auto sync everything, auto sync only specific playlists, or is it set up to manually manage ?
Let's start with that and go from there.

Transfer files from Ipod to new Computer
I lost the hard drive in old computer. Having trouble transfering files directly from ipod to new computer. Ipod is configured for windows. Old computer was windows XP, new computer is Windows Vista. Get transfer, but it is gibberish of some sort. I don't know what generation ipod. It is a video ipod with wheel and 30GB. It does say version 1.3 for itunes and model MA446LL. Any help?
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide -
How do i transfer files from ipod to pc? please help!
I have recently purchased a new laptop and i need to transfer all my files from my ipod on to it (especially music). i followed the instructions on the itunes/cloud page but when it said to "locate the item" none of the supposed "items" were there. i have purchased a lot of music from itunes and do not intend on losing my money. I also have a lot of other music i spent alot of time transferring from disc to ipod. my ipods software also needs updated from the old ios5(yes, 5!!) to ios6 as the software is starting to not work correctly. help would be very much appreciated as i feel like throwing my laptop out the window and telling apple to go do one.
I don't know which page that you looking at but you should be able to copy your iTunes purchases over from it via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. But music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs), then you don't have your music on a backup drive or your old computer (copying music , they should work for other content in your library as well) ? If not then there are some programs listed half-way down this page which should be able to copy them back from a device : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Depending upon what else is on it you can copy off photos taken with the iPod : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
And for documents or other files you may be able to use the via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to your computer's iTunes, via your wifi network, email, dropbox etc - whatever the app that they are in supports.
There is also this page for syncing to a new computer : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141 -
How/can I update itunes library from ipod
I had a previous version of iTunes on a work PC, which I had copied my entire CD collection onto. I have since moved companies and hence lost the laptop. I(maybe stupidly) assumed that I could update the iTunes library from the iPod.
Having searched the support pages, the only way that I can tell to do this was to export the library in the first place, which I did not do. Also iTunes seems to want to delete everything from my iPod everytime I try to do anything?!?
I really want to avoid spending every evening for another week downloading all the albums again, so any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks
MarkIf you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended (as previously mentioned) is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

When my Mac wakes from sleep it makes a sound like the harddrive is kinda groaning. It does not happen every time but it just started a few days ago. How can I check to be sure that it is the drive making the sound.
