Updating/Editing Non .Mac Sites

I've created a website for my sister-in-law and am waiting for her domain name to get pointed to the server to which I've uploaded the files.
Presumably, it is way easier to make changes to active sites using iWeb. (Or is that the only way? The source text for my iWeb website is way too complex for using a text editor.*)
But must an updated/edited site be "published to a folder" every time, and then those files uploaded via FTP to the outside domain? Or do the existing files in my Sites folder get updated automatically when changes are saved in iWeb, thus making them ready for an FTP upload?
Presumably also, the edited files when published to a folder would overwrite any existing ones in the Sites folder. Yes?

SIte is now up and running -- and I've uploaded an update just to see that it works. Thanks for your well-informed "Yesses."
1. Will the Users > Library > Application Support > iWeb folder hold more than one "Domain.sites2" file? Would each project be given a different name in that folder? I don't want to overwrite one web project with another.
Fortunately, I'd been reading elsewhere about that folder so that when iWeb asked me for a domain folder to open (and after a brief rush of poo-poo to the heart), I knew where to look. Using Preview in Leopard I was able to see that it was the one I was after.
2. Must any website projects I do be left in the column on the left of the iWeb window? If not, what files would I need to save so that I could open them in iWeb? Would I go to the above folder again to retrieve them?
Thanks for your help.

Publishing to a straight URL here. Does 08 give a better slideshow on "non-.Mac" sites? 1.1.2 site were funky white and non-animated. Don't want to upgrade unless this is a sure thing. Thanks.

Also, I would suggest requesting a change in your credit card number that was
used for that transaction just to be safe.
Also, since they actually got access to your computer, if you have any other
financial account info on your computer, you will need to monitor those accounts
quite closely for any fraudulent activity.  There is no knowing what they might have
accessed.  They quite possibly may have downloaded your whole life.

  • Can You Create a Fully-functional Web Gallery for a Non-.Mac Site?

I love the idea of the web galleries that iPhoto '08 uses and would buy iLife '08 for that alone... but I don't have a ,Mac account and don't plan to. I have seen only one mention of this in these discussions, and it was only speculation. So here's the question:
Can iPhoto '08 create web galleries with all the goodies involved--skimming over a gallery to see thumbnails of all the images for example--which will be fully functional on a private, non-.mac web site?
If so, then count me in.

this may seem other than your request, but I have a suggestion:
just buy a darn .Mac account already. Personally, I've grown tired of hearning about how .Mac is unreasonably priced all these years. Well guess what, a basic account now gets you 10 gigs of space for about $90 if you pay the taxes. Thats an additional fee that you feel you shouldn't have to blah, blah, blah. -Sure, you can host to your own .com via iWeb and I'm sure we'll all hear about how to host other things without a .Mac account soon. But just pretend iLife costs an additional $90 and move on. It's worth it once you start to use it and you can say good buy to your concern. again, sorry for the indifference, but you can easily get past your issue. Think of it this way... there are many ways to upgrade to iLife '08 that will save you the same amount of money. If you're that cheap, go that route. If you're reasonable, like the rest of us that understand we need to pay (yes, unfortunately) for Apple's innovation, get on the boat and enjoy the ride.
crucify me if you want... this ends my rant.

  • Publishing to a non .mac site

Hi, is there a step by step procedure to publish a site to a non .mac host?
    Thanks

I changed the name, uploaded the folder, and still
    nothing.
When you look at your web space with your ftp program, you should see two items: index.html and a folder called Kiiskakuna. Do you?
    When I hit publish,
it automatically publishes to iMac. I have to use
Cyberduck to upload to the other server. Is this
    correct?
Yes. You do not hit publish, you use the menu item to publish to a folder. It is a good idea to select your desktop as the place to publish to so you don't get mixed up. After publishing that way, you should see two items on your desktop, index.html and a folder called Kiiskakuna. You use Cyberduck to upload these to your web space.
Right now it is clear that there is no index.html in your web space, so you must not have uploaded that. It must be outside the folder Kiiskakuna and it must be the one that iWeb created outside the folder Kiiskakuna. There is another one inside the folder, but that and everything else there should get uploaded automatically when you upload the folder.
What is the name of the topmost page of your site inside the iWeb app?

  • Updating & Editing an iWeb Site

I am making a website using iWeb for a PC User and uploading it and giving them the exported iWeb file. Can they update or edit the site I create for them using a PC program such as www.pagebreeze.com or another PC Program? Do you have any suggestions? I won't be uploading it to .mac
    Thanks,
    Flippy

    No, they can't.
Pages created in iWeb cannot be edited outside of the application, in any serious way. Some post processing changes can be made, but not efficiently for a PC user.
Great opportunity to tell them what a great operating system OSX is....

  • If you're having Podcast hosting issues on a non-.mac site, please read:

So, last night I spent an insane amount of time trying to figure out why my podcast wasn't working on my website. I host my domain with godaddy.com and I just knew it was a hosting issue, not a iWeb or .m4a issue. Sure enough, I was on a Windows webserver and as soon as I requested to be put on a Linux server, my Podcast was playing properly on both my website and iTunes. I saw many people on the board with the same problem and I'm here to tell you, SWITCH TO A LINUX WEB SERVER! =) Later!

i was able to change it through my control panel on my host's website. i think windows web server runs on IIS or something lame like that and linux, well, not sure what runs on that...maybe apache? anyway, thank God for being able to switch on the fly. what a nightmare.

  • Using iWeb for non dot-mac sites

    Hi all,
I own a number of domains that I'd like to use iWeb on. Am I able to utilize iWeb for a non .mac domain, or do I need to use something like Dreamweaver?
    Many thanks.
    -Hugh

No, in fact I have a sneaky suspicion that not using dot-mac sites will eliminate a lot of problems other people have. You will also lose some of the effects like the nicer slideshow etc.
I have never used dot-mac and never encountered any of the uploading/publishing problems that are so often mentioned on this forum.
    Here is what you do:
After editing your website you choose :Publish to a folder.
This lets you choose a location on your hardrive into which all the necessary files will be compiled/rendered. In this folder you will find an htlm file plus a folder with the necessary files for easch of your pages.. This publishing is done lightning fasy pecause it is done locallly and not trhough your internetconnection like when you published to dot-mac. Also post-editing is easy and hassle free.
For editing and uploading my website I use "Transmit" but there are lots of other applications like "Fetch"
    What to upload?
Well I believe the jury is still out on this.
I just upload the contents of the published folder and that works for me. Other publish the whole folder plus the dummy "Index file" that is generated outside that folder. You will heve to find out for your self.
If any changes or editing has to be done afterwards, I republish and then just upload the altered files.
There is one more thing I do, and I believe others don't. I keep my domain file in the same folder where I keep the Published folder.
E.g. there is a festival website, so I have a folder "Festival" in which I keep the domains file, and the published "Festival website" folder.
This way it is easy to keep various different websites.
When you want to edit one of them, go to that folder and double click the domains file, this will start iWeb with the right website for you to edit.
    Really very easy.

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • Links to slideshow stopped working on non .mac published site

I was helping my friend redo his website in iWeb. It was previously done in iWeb, and worked fine when published to a folder and uploaded to his verizon account.
Today, when we exported and upload none of the links on the photo gallery pages worked. Clicking a photo to enlarge it found a broken link, and the slide show stopped working too.
I thought I forgot to do something, so I uploaded the old version of the site. That stopped working, too.
    Am I missing something?

The Apple slideshow (the one built-in to iWeb) using the photo template is supposedly one of the ".Mac-only" features of iWeb. It uses some resources off the .Mac servers, so it probably won't work when the pages are hosted on other non-.Mac servers.
