Updating firmware on multiple wireless router setup

Hi, I'm trying to take over support from a tech who's moved out of the area. There's abut 4 mixed of these wireless routers WRT300N's and WAP54G's in the house. I can see and update the firmware for the router at 192.168.1.1.., the other routers are connected through their network ethernet port. Is there any way via the wireless connection to access the other 3 to update their firmware? It would be great to do it from one location. I don't know what IP the installer set each of these up to.

To update the firmware you must know the IP address of the device, regardless whether you use a wired or wireless link.
You should also never do the update through a wireless link. A firmware update must not be interrupted. If it is interrupted you are likely to have a dead router afterwards. As wireless links tend to be far more unreliable then wired links it is always highly recommended to use wired links for the updates.
I would suggest you do a network scan or ping all IP addresses inside your LAN subnet. Check where you get responses and check the arp cache with "arp -a" to see what MAC addresses are behind those IP addresses. This should help you to find and identify the IP addresses of those other devices. If you cannot find them anywhere inside your LAN subnet it may well be that they have an arbitrary IP address somewhere else. In that case, probably the best option would be to reset the device to factory defaults and then reconfigure them.

  • HPC8180 Printer wont connect to wireless network, after firmware upgrade to Wireless Router

My HPC8180 has been connecting wirelessly since I bought it sometime ago.  I recently had to upgrade the firmware on my Netcom NB9W wireless router and since then my HP wont resolve to the wireless network.
I run the Wireless Network wizzard on the printer, select the correct SSID and enter the WEP key as per instructions.
    It then will not connect.
The summary I print out says it passes everything except:
    No Filtering = Fail
    Connected = Not Run
Signal Strength = Very Low (which is strange because it's about 10ft from Wireless Router).
Other networks detected matching your network name (SSID) = No
    Summary says:
    Network Name (SSID) altnet (correct)
    IP Address = Not applicable
    Configuration Source = Not applicable
    Communication Mode = Infrastructure
    Authentication Type = Open System
    Encryption = 64-bit WEP
I have NOT turned on mac address filtering
    Any ideas??

Your router appears to be a DSL modem router.  Those can be tricky to connect to.  Also, WEP can be problematic and is no longer a good security measure.  WEP can be broken in about 10 minutes with freeware from the internet.
    Let's do three things:
    1. Change to WPA or WPA2 encryption.  You can make up your own password.  Make it 13 or more characters, numbers and letters, upper and lower case.
    2. Reset the Network Defaults in your printer (Setup > Network area).
    3. Attach to the router in this way:
Sometimes DSL providers have more control over the router than the printer likes.
    - Unplug the telephone line from the router
    - Turn the power off on the router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
    - Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the device (Wireless Setup WIzard)
    - Now find the IP address of the printer (it should be on the self-test printout), type it into a browser.
    - On that screen you will find a Networking Tab, then on the left Wireless, then the IPv4 Tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address).
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank
    - Finally, plug in the phone line, reboot the router and test.

  • Updating firmware on Westell 327W router

I found a file on Verizon website to manually update the router but it did not work, says that software update failed. I still have version 03.02.01. Does anyone know how to get the latest firmware installed on this router?

Make sure you have the correct version of the firmware update being applied. There are three differnet revisions of the 327w that you could have and you can determine your version from the modem's Web GUI or from the sticker on the bottom of the router. Also when running the upgrade, shut off your Firewall and Anti-virus until it complete in case they are interfering with the upgrade.
    See this page: http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/internet/highspeed/troubleshooting/network/firmwareupgr...
Verizon should already be pushing the latest version of the firmware to you but that doesn't seem to be the case (likely though if you were in bridge mode previously).

  • Update Firmware on Linksys Wireless N Router? (WRT150N)

I have noticed there is a newer version of the firmware for my router. Is it necessary to upgrade to the newest firmware? If for some reason it does not work correctly is it easy to reset the modem to the original firmware? If I install it will it erase my current wpa2 pass key?
It is recommended that I update the firmware or should I leave it as it is? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Message Edited by Deluxe8520 on 06-26-2007 11:24 AM

The only times that you need to upgrade firmware is:
    1)  when a router security issue is fixed, or
    2)  when a new feature it added to the router that you want to use, or
    3)  when router is not working, and all other attempts to fix it have failed
So, if your router is working properly, and there are no security fixes, and nothing new in the firmware that you need, then you do not need to upgrade the firmware, and you probably should not do it.
I always look at the firmware "version info" to determine if I want to upgrade to a new firmware.  I looked at the info for the WRT150N, and I don't see any security fixes, or new features, so that only leaves item 3 as a possible reason to upgrade.
After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults.  Doing this will wipe out your WPA2 key, and all other settings.  After a firmware upgrade and reset to factory defaults, you should set the router up again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
You can return to an earlier firmware, using the same procedure as a firmware upgrade, but to do it, you must have a copy of that firmware on your computer.   The router's copy of that old firmware will be wiped out when you upgrade, so you cannot depend on the router to keep a copy of the old firmware.

  • Updating firmware etc. for E1200 router

When I bought my E1200 router my primary (in fact only) computer was a Windows laptop.  Since that time I bought a MacBook Pro and have been using that as my primary computer.  The Mac is running on the latest OS (Mountain Lion).
I would like to install the latest software to maintain the router on my Mac but I was told several months ago that there was no update available for Mountain Lion.  Does anyone know if that has changed, and if so where can I download the appropriate software?
    Thank you.

I suggest that you install the cisco connect software to another computer. But you can always manage the router manually by accessing the router interface. If you need to check the wireless settings, you can still do that even if you don't have cisco connect.
Please check the link below how you can access the router interface:

  • 10.4.11 Update conflict with Netgear wireless router

I downloaded the 10.4.11 update, and now I can't access my comcast email. I can surf the internet and access everything else, but when using my Netgear wireless to connect, no email. I can connect and access it elsewhere using other wireless routers. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I hate when people do this and feel bad, but . . . I have a Netgear WPN824v2 and have not had problems with wireless connections and or retrieving mail.
I would not be surprised that the Location profile is damaged in someway since you can connect and function on other wireless networks. This type of problem I have never heard of and it kinda makes no sense. Now if you were completely locked out and couldn't surf, then I would suspect the router. But since you can surf . . .
Try making a whole new Location Profile and see what happens. And/or try to track down any differences in the connection setups for the working wireless' and see that are any differences that the OS upgrade could have changed.

  • Unable to Update Wii using Linksys Wireless Router

I am unable to download updates for my Wii, and i cant get into my router to change any settings, i dont know what my password is or anything

Well if you don't know what the password for the wireless is, then its pretty obvious why (if thats what your saying) but if your asking what the password to get into the UI interface for the router is, the default password is admin with no username. There you can switch the password for the wireless, however if there is no password and it just wont connect, move the Wii out in front of your tv to get a better signal.

  • Wireless Router Setup Screen

When I type in the default IP address into my web browser, it doesn't take me to the router's setup screen like it's supposed to.  I want to get there in order to establish securities on my wireless network.  How can I get to the set up screen?

On your computer which is connected to the router, go to the command prompt and do an ipconfig, the default gateway number is the one that you should be filling-in on IE's address bar. Don't forget to shut off firewalls on your pc ok?

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Setup Help Needed

    Hi,
I have a WRT 54G router I want to set up on my network.
What I want to be able to do is have the router allow wireless laptops to connect via wireless, but I want the router to assign the IP automatically through DHCP. Is this possible?
My Network information is as follows:
Router would be assigned IP 192.168.72.10
Network information for Office where this is going:
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.72.1
    Primary DNS: 192.168.1.59
    Secondary DNS: 192.168.1.52
    any help would be appreciated...

First of all, let me say that, assuming you have a Linksys router in the main office, that there is no reason why that router could not use both fixed LAN IP addresses, and have its DHCP server turned on and give out DHCP addresses also.  So, it seems like you could setup the system in the manner I mentioned in my previous post.   Unless, for some reason, you prefer not to do it this way.
If you really want to set it up with the WRT54G giving out DHCP addresses, then read on:
If you want to use the DHCP server in the WRT54G, you will need to place it on a separate subnet.
I'm still a bit confused by what you have written.  You said that the WRT54G router "would be assigned IP 192.168.72.10".  And later you said that my assumption was correct that you set the "Local IP Address" to this value.   However, if you want to use the DHCP server in the WRT54G, this will not work, because to use the DHCP server, the WRT54G needs to be on a separate subnet.
Instead, in the WRT54G, you would need to set the "Internet Connection Type" to "Static", then give the WRT54G the WAN address (not local IP address) of 192.168.72.10.   (You will also need to specify the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 , default gateway 192.168.72.1 , and DNS (proxy) server 192.168.72.1 )  You would need to reset the WRT54G's  "Local IP address" to a subnet that is not used elsewhere in your network.  Since you apparently already use 192.168.1.x  and  192.168.72.x  subnets, you will need to pick something else, perhaps 192.168.54.1 for the "local IP address" of the WRT54G.
In this type of setup, you would leave the DHCP server of the WRT54G enabled, and wire a LAN port from the office router to the Internet port of the WRT54G.
In this case, the WRT54G is in control of all your router settings, including port forwarding, DHCP server, and wireless settings.  Also note that if you need to forward a port, you will need to forward the port through your entire network, not just the WRT54G.
One additional warning.  I have not personally used a "3 subnet" system with Linksys routers.  So I am not certain that all your DNS addresses will flow through the system properly.  If it doesn't work, you may need to enter some of you actual Internet based DNS addresses (or perhaps your Primary and Secondary 192.168.1.59 and .52 DNS servers) into the WRT54G router by hand, rather than using the built in Linksys DNS proxy at 192.168.72.1
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems after wireless router (WRT310n) firmware update.

I updated the firmware on my wireless router (wrt310n) yesterday and now I am having major issues connecting my laptop to it via wireless.  After the update, I reset the router as well as unplugged the power source.  Once the update and everything was reset, I re-entered all my settings and set the computers back up using the LELA.  I go to change the laptop to wireless and it says it can't connect to it.  I did the LELA update on the laptop thinking that would fix it, but it didn't help.  However, the whole time I am able to connect to the router using a ethernet cable.  I turned off all of the encryption settings, firewalls, and broadcasted my SSID.  I searched this forum for some help and one topic suggested somethings, which I did, and I was able to connect wirelessly with the encryption.  I thought I was done and set-up, until later that evening.  I turned the computer back on only to see the same problem again.  I decided to deal with it the next day (today) by uninstalling LELA and just using Windows to configure my wireless settings.  As soon as I uninstalled LELA, entered the key into the Windows program, it worked like a charm.  Until tonight, when I turned on the computer.  Now I'm connecting to the network wirelessly, but it says "Limited or no connectivity."  Acting like there is no encryption key entered.  I go to "View Wireless Networks" and it says "WIndows cannot configure connection.  If you have another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software."  The thing is, I don't have another program on here to manage a wireless connection.  Sorry for the long post.  I figured if I didn't type everything out, people would have just asked me questions.  I had no problems with this router until I did the update yesterday.  If it can't be fixed, is there a way to revert back to the old firmware?  Thanks in advance.

Well you should adjust the Wireless Settings on your router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Before you attempt to connect to your wireless network you should first check your Programs menu if there is any Wireless Program(like 'Intel Proset' , 'Dell Wireless WLAN' , or anything that gives you a clue of a Wireless Program/Utility/Software)...You should use the Wireless Utility/Software(if any) to connect to your wireless network and not the Windows default Wireless Program to avoid any conflicts...
