Updating firmware (third-party memory)

I've just spent a joyous week resurrecting my life's work, after a hideous Norton-hard-drive-erasing incident. Thanks to maclover and others for their help with that.
I've reinstalled everything and upgraded my OS to 10.4. All fine and dandy, except that my Mac will not now go to sleep when told to do so. The screen will go to sleep, but not the computer. Also, when I leave it for an hour or so, the screen will go to sleep but can't wake it up again.
While running a check for software updates, I was given the option to download a firmware update (5.1.5f). From the blurb, I understand that this should fix the sleeping issue.
Before I install it, I just want to check one thing: the instructions say to remove any third party memory before upgrading the firmware, and re-installing the memory afterwards.
Is this really necessary? I don't want to risk buggering anything up, but I'd prefer not to go messing about with the innards of my Mac if it's not necessary.
Thanks in advance!

Hi MiraW-
If Apple has taken the time to include that as an instruction then it is probably a very good idea.
Make sure to discharge any static before you reach in and pull out the stick(s).

WIndows 8.1 64bit, Windows Installers stalls with any install, updates or third party programs. Third party program installations work if I restart in safe mode. Updates don't as they cannot be installed in safe mode and require normal mode.
Been happening for months now. Some installations after a long time finally proceed, others dont.
Already trying uninstalling antivirus (Bitdefender) with no result.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Could you check this issue under clean boot?

  • Can third-party memory ruin my hard drive?

Sorry this is a wee bit off topic, but since (a) I am more likely to get a straight answer from people here, and (b) I've already brought this problem up before, I'm going to ask..
I have 2 identical laptops. We bought both for the lab about 2 years ago. They are G4 ppc. I bought an extra half gig of memory for each at the time of purchase, but I think it is from ramjet, not Apple.
Both drives failed within a few weeks of one another. The second one came back from Apple today with a snotty message saying that the third-party memory had caused the problem and that they will refuse to do a repair if we ever send them a computer in the future with a third-party memory chip in it.
This strikes me as absolute horse-shiite, but then again, maybe I am not aware of something I should be.

The letter states "During the testing process, it was
determined that a part Apple has not approved for use
with your product resulted in your product's failure.
When the part was removed, your product successfully
passed all Apple diagnostic and reliability tests"
(then it checks RAM in the space provided."
(A new hard drive, which is 15 GB larger than the
original, was put in, along with an obsolete version
of OS X. One has to wonder why the drive was
replaced if removing the memory resulted in all tests
    being passed.)
It has been well documented that Mac memory meet strict requirements because of very tight timing and sync on the MLB... memory with sloppy gating (inconsistent timing) will cause read/write errors on HDs and that it can cause corruption in the boot record and index sectors... this in turn can cause the drive to seek for data trying to fix itself and excessively work the drive and shorten it's MTBF. So, Indirectly... cause damage... sorta... but not like taking a hammer to it.. You basically got a form letter.. but the memory that you are using may be causing some problems and contributing to problems on your HD. Even if your system may not call for matched memory if you always stick to using matched sticks, (especially the speeds, not just size) you will save your self a bunch of headaches in the long run. Pull any 3rd party memory before sending it in for repair... you don't always get the system back with the same sticks (even if they weren't officially replaced.
OS9 was problematic in this similar reguard... I went thru 3 HDs before figuring out that an extension conflict was the cause of my data being hosed on my old Performa. (Apple had replaced all components at least once and I was still having problems until I killed the offending extension).

  • 27"imac with 16gb ram, wanting to upgrade to 32gb. what is the least problematic third party memory to upgrade to?

I want to upgrade from 16gb to 32 for my imac 27", release date Sept 2013. I've been reading about Crucial memory problems with random restarts and kernal panic notices as late as today on the Crucial website. Any tips on a third party memory brand that is least problematic?

I personally would steer clear of the others listedi n Baby Boomers link.  Not because they may or maynot be good I am just not familiar with them.
Just because you are not familiar w/the website, the OP should steer clear?  <Edited by Host>
For the record, I have been using Ramseeker website since 1999.  Not once have I ever had a problem w/any of their RAM.
I would never recommend a website if there were known problems w/their products.

  • Apple vs. Third Party memory

I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my 2010 Mac Pro, 2x2.4ghz Quad-Core Xeon processors currently with just 6gb. I have two empty slots and ideally would like to drop in two 8gb modules.
Looking at the Apple Store they want $500 each for the 8gb, which is absolutely insane: http://store.apple.com/us/memorymodel/ME_MACPRO_S10_RAM
Looking at the specs of the compatible memory, I found this at a local computer store which seems to match: http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_311_312_611&item_id=48281Q
Is there something I'm overlooking here, any issues with using third-party memory? A spec that will not allow this to actually be compatible?
    Thanks

Is there something I'm overlooking here, any issues with using third-party memory?
YES. These guys say, we might have some of this, we might not. We might ship it soon, we might not. It might work in your computer, it might not. If you send it back, we charge you a 15% restocking fee.
The Vendors you should be dealing with say:
    • We know Macs.
    • You tell us what Mac, we send you RAM that meets Apple specs and is guaranteed to work in your Mac, or your money back.
    • If it EVER fails, we will replace it free.

  • Cost update for third party and individual purchase orders

    Hi,
We went live in around 5 months back. Last month we changed the configuration so that costs for back 2 back purhcase order will be determined from goods receipt & third party purchase orders could be determined from logistics invoice verification. This is working correctly with the new documents which are being created.
We have an issue with the document which are already created and posted. We want to update these existing billing documents so that they can pick the rigth cost. For these old transactions currently the cost is being picked from valuation segment of the material.
I have tried resolving this through reorganization of infostructures & through sdvprsupdate but it does not work.

  • Mass update of Third Party Vendor at PO Line item pricing condition

    Hi All,
We have requirement from business as follows:
We are using item level condition for Lumper Charge in PO and it is for Third Party Vendor. We maintain vendor in pricing condition record so it will be automatically populated while PO is created. Recently vendor is changed so we have also updated new vendor in pricing condition record so it will be taken care when new POs will be created. But there are thousand open POs in which new vendor needs to be updated.
Is there any way to mass update third party vendor at PO line item level?
    Relevant pointers will be rewarded.
    Regards,
    Tt

    Hi,
You may check the following options:
    1. If the freight vendor was pulled through condition record, then change the vendor in the condition record and update the pricing in MEI1. Refer the KBA: 1819416 - Condition records not getting updated automatically when using MEI1/MEI4
    2. If the condition is manual condition, there is no option to mass change the vendor in standard, as of my knowledge. You may create a custom program to change the vendor in the PO. Refer the similar thread: Mass update of freight vendor in PO condition

  • New update adds third-party remote support. I could use mine already!

    I am a little confused.
    Appletell states-
"The update also allows users to use third party remotes with their Apple TV, which has been a long standing request from many users"
This is saying, to me, that you can use a third-party remote to control TV functions.
If that's the case, I have been doing that ever since I got it, using my universal remote for all my tv-connected devices including my TV (I got it to learn the Apple remotes signals). Could someone please elaborate on this?

It's not really for universal remotes - which normally come with a database of codes to use with a wide variety of devices. It's for the remotes that can normally control another device - for example:
My Samsung TV remote has the ability to control a Samsung DVD player. Although i haven't got the DVD player, the buttons are on the remote anyway (Play, Pause, Fast Forward, etc).
I can now map those buttons the the ATV - in fact i gave it a go and it worked fine. However, i've put that back in the cupboard as i have a universal remote like you thats been doing it for ages.
    Cheers

  • Third party memory upgrades?

    Hi,
I'm in the process of upgrading the memory in my USB 2.0 iMac and was wondering if anyone had experience with using non OEM modules. In my case, the price is not the only factor deterring me from making a purchase directly from Apple. After placing an online order for a 256MB module (said to ship in 5-7 days), it was 10 days until I received a notice via email that they were backordered and the item wouldn't ship for another two weeks! Lousy.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a particular manufacturer. The specs are:
    Unbuffered, PC2700, 3.3v SO-DIMM of SDRAM.
    Regards,
    Rory Woods

Try looking at www.ramseeker.com for RAM prices. They list prices from a number of reputable vendors. You can also use the RAM selectors on the websites of vendors like www.crucial.com and www.datamem.com. They will all be much cheaper than Apple, and the same or better quality (after all, Apple buys their RAM from third party vendors too; Apple doesn't manufacture their own RAM). Just make sure you buy from a vendor that offers a lifetime warranty (almost all do). Crucial is a very reputable brand; my preferred vendor is Data Memory Systems.

  • IOS 6.0.2 update and third party earbuds

My Tour earphones from beats by dre won't work with the Music app on iPhone 5 after I updated to iOS 6.0.2.
They work fine during phone calls. The originals that came with the iPhone works fine with Music and phone calls.
Has anyone experienced this? Are there any fix?
    Regards
    Greenfee

Unless Apple replaced your battery, and it appears they didn't, you're pretty much on your own now. Have you tried going back to whoever replaced your battery? That's gonna be your only choice now, because if a third-party replaced your battery, Apple won't touch your phone now.

  • Safari 6.2 update killed third-party toolbar buttons: SOLUTION to re-enable them

After installing the Safari 6.2 update as part of a recent OS X update, on my MacBook Air running OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion), both my third-party toolbar buttons (via Safara extensions) suddenly vanished (LastPass and Pinterest).   Reinstalling them didn't help, and Safari > Help > Installed Plug-Ins shows them as installed just fine.
The SOLUTION: Safari 6.2 has added an unannounced privacy setting with default setting set to OFF.  All I had to do to re-enable both missing toolbar buttons was to go the Extensions tab of Safari > Preferences, and for each extension listed on the left, click it and then check the (suddenly-by-default-unchecked) checkbox to enable the extension.
Boo Apple for turning off everyone's Safari extensions without notice, and without instruction about how to re-enable them.

I purchased and downloaded Snow Leopard and everything worked fine. I was able to play all of my DVDs some of which I use for teaching purposes. Then I received a notice to download 10.6.2 update for Snow Leopard. I allowed the software to download and install itself on my Mac. After that some of my DVD's no longer played and when I tried to play them my whole system locked up and I had to manually power down before I could get the DVD out of the player.
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
There's now a 10.6.3 update, which fixes a long list of things. I'd download and install the "combo" updater:

  • [kernel] kernel update and third party modules management

    Hi all,
I turned to Archlinux with my new thinkpad X220 just for a few days, while I have used Ubuntu for 4 years. I had never controlled my system in such a degree, and feel happy about it.
However, I have a question about kernel update, for I had install some modules from AUR with yaourt( e.g. tp_smapi, acpi_call). For my poor knowledge about pacman, I don't know how to handle those modules while I upgrade my kernel. I cannot remember to re-install all of them!
I think there must be a solution that I didn't found, so I write this thread to ask for help.
          Any help would be appreciate.

Mr.Elendig wrote:You can use some silly wrapper around pacman that rebuilds them when there is a kernel update. I'm sure someone has written one already.
Thank you, Mr.Elendig. Do you mean some kind of frontend such as yaourt?
Or some kind of hooks like this:
    aur/mkinitcpio-vbox 2.0-3 (Out of Date) (29)
VirtualBox hook for mkinitcpio that rebuilds kernel modules on next reboot
Using the key words you provided, I searched " kernel upgrade module rebuild " and found that gentoo offically provide a tool called  "module-rebuild" to reinstall external modules. Maybe it's because gentoo always compile source code? But no other results.
However, now I found what I need to do is just to build the modules listed in the /etc/rc.conf, and that is acceptable. Maybe after a few weeks of study, I can find out my way to solve this problem.
    And thanks for your reply.

  • Can the new MacBookPro be upgraded w/third party memory to 16GB?

I talked with someone that mentioned that the NEW MacBookPro (non-retina) can be upgraded to 16G of RAM using two 8 G memory modules and the system will recognize it, even though it isn't a sanctioned Apple configuration.
    Is this true?
    Thanks

Yes, you can upgrade to 16GB - Just make sure you install the right RAM spec'd out for your Macbook...
    16GB - DDR3 - 1600MHz.
Stick with brand name RAM only for less issues...
Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, Patriot (Mac Series, Kingston (non-Value) are good brands....
Also make sure you have a #00 Phillips screwdriver handy.....
You have 10 screws in the bottom of your Macbook - 7 short ones and 3 long ones - remember where they go in...
