Updating Flash Produces Message that the Update is Not as New as the Installed Version

On certain computers, every time I update Flash Player, I get a message (twice) that says that the already installed version is newer (higher number) than that which I am trying to install. Clearly, that is not true. It appears that the installation, although it goes to the end, may not really have been complete. Moreover, I continually get messages saying that the Flash Player is not up-to-date.
On the current machine, Windows shows that the following are installed:
Adobe Flash Player Plugin 15
Adobe Flash Player 17 ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player 17 NPAPI
I tried using Windows Uninstall to remove The Flash Player Plugin 15, but I get the same error message as I do when I am trying to install one of the current updates. It is not removed by that Uninstall process.
Assuming that Flash Player Plugin 15 is the problem, how do I get rid of it completely?
Should I remove the ActiveX and NPAPI first, and then try to remove the Plugin?
Should I use the "brute force" method of deleting files and then looking for and removing Registry listing?
Does Adobe have a specialized program for accomplishing this process?
I'd appreciate any help this forum may be able to provide.

Well, we have a specialized uninstaller, but you ran it and observed that it didn't work.  It *should* remove both the NPAPI and ActiveX plug-ins.  It's really strange that you have two NPAPI plug-ins in parallel.  We do change the nomenclature occasionally, so I'm thinking that they're both authentic, but we might validate that theory if we don't have success here...
Typically when the installer can't clean up an installation, its because one or more files are corrupt or permissions have gotten messed up over time.  If it's been a while since you've checked the disk for errors, now is not a bad time to do that.
If you have anything critical on the computer, it's always prudent to ensure that you have current, reliable backups before messing with the filesystem, just in case.
Check your hard disk for errors in Windows 7
Once you've determined that the filesystem is sane, and/or cleaned up any latent problems, then try to do a manual uninstall:
https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/clean-install-flash-player.html
Then re-install using the offline installer:
Internet Explorer:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_ax.exe
Firefox and other NPAPI browsers:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player.exe

  • Firefix claims an update is available, and so I click to get it installed (I am running 5.0). I get a message that the install failed and that I need to make sure no other copies of FF are running on my computer. ??

The bigger issue is that it tries to run the update every time I click on a URL (like from an email). And so it opens a window to locate a browser, then starts the update - which then crashes with the message about making sure no other copies of FF are running.

    Change here:
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.

  • Is there a problem with iPhone update server, I can't seem to update my IOS on my wife's 3GS iPhone, keep getting message that the server is not reachable, yet I am connected to internet and had no problem syncing the phone or downloading iTunes software

What's up with the iPhone update server. I have repeatedly tried in recent days to update the IOS software on my wife's 3GS iPhone but keep getting message that the iPhone update server cannot be contacted. The phone syncs normally and I am sure I am connected to the internet properly. Also I have successfully updated ITunes software during this same time frame.  What gives??

Try this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 and look at this section.
Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com
Error 1004, 1013, 1638, 3194: These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Check security software. Ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow this article for assistance with security software. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

  • I attempted to update iTunes yesterday and I thought the process completed without any issues but when I tried opening iTunes today, I got an error message that said "iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7"

Attempted to update iTunes on January 23rd and it appeared to install properly.  When I tried to open iTunes on January 24th, it would not open and gave me an error message that said "iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7 (Windows error 126)"  I then tried to reintall iTunes and it again appeared to install properly but when it attempted to open, I was given the same error message.

Taken at face value, you're having trouble with an Apple Application Support program file there. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)
Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7,now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Application Support" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP,head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post. (If you've got XP, although the procedure is for Vista and 7, just read "Computer" as "My Computer", read "Uninstall a program control panel" as "Add or Remove programs control panel" and assume the system is 32-bit, and you'll be doing the right things.)

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • When trying to download the IOS 7.1.1 update I continue to get a message that the update failed?  Please advise!

When trying to download the ISO 7.1.1 update, my iPad goes through the downloading  process and then goes to the preparing mode and after a while returns a message that the "Software Update Failed, an error occurred downloading IOS 7.1.1 ."  Any suggestions?

Make sure anti-virus and other security software is disabled.
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Use the steps to troubleshoot security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

When I attempt to download new updates or purchases to my ipod touch generation 3, it starts to download, then gives me the message that the network has timed out and I need to check the connection.  I don't understand this because each time I have an active internet connection.  Any idea why this is happening?

This is asked and answered very often on these forums.  A forum search bar is on the right side of this page.

I was installing an update when I ogt the error message that the MSVCR80.dll file was missing and windows error 126.  What do I do?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

I'm getting a message that my Java is not updated, but when I run the update check, I'm told all is updated. Some web materials won't open because my Java is not updated. What do I do?

    Hi Ginny,
There are no more updates for Java from Apple for 10.5.8, the only way to get a Java upgrade is updating your OSX.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they do still have it:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
And it's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account Apple will send one free.
