Updating from 10.4.7 to 10.4.9 - been trying ALL day!

Hi there. I decided last night to reinstall my iMac from the setup discs as I was having a few glitches (not wanting to shut down, having to keep forcing apps to quit etc). All went well, til I tried to upload my iLife '08 disc this morning. I discovered my installation discs were from Feb so i'm currently running on 10.4.7 - iLife 08, need a minimum of 10.4.9. I've tried doing via system preferences, software update, but just keeps getting stuck on locating software. so i've then tried downloading direct from the apple downloads site. still no joy. do i need to install 10.4.8, then 10.4.9, then 10.4.10 to get the most uptodate version? Doesn't seem right, and now the imac is running drastically slower on the internet too. taking an estimated 4 hours to download 250mb (my internet connection is slow anyway only on a 2meg connection, but still). Any help on the quickest way to get uptodate? And then to top it off, at lunch I had the same problem. Refused to shutdown when I tried, all icons disappeared off screen, but i was left with the blue background. I feel like I'm back in the pc days, and just want to curl up with my MacBook and forget about this iMac !!! Any advice gratefully appreciated.

i'm really surprised if i have to download previous versions to get to 10.4.10
You don't, that is what the 10.4.10 Combo updater is for.
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

Your issue is completely different. You are running Snow Leopard. There is no download for Windows Support software for Snow Leopard, hence the error you see. Snow Leopard Windows Support software is on the Snow Leopard installation disk.
You need the Snow Leopard installation disk or a replacement for it.

  • Update from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 and lost all users and their home directories

My server has been working flawlessly for many months. I did the upgrade to 10.5.6 and everything has been fine. I decided to do the software update to 10.5.8. When it was finished I could not log in as admin or anyone else. I finally got in as root...then it gave me an error in Workgroup Manager. Said I was not logged in and there was an error of -14008.
All my users are gone and so is their home directories....I hate to say it but this is ridiculous...doing a simple update and losing all the users? I expect this from Windows but not my xSERVER.
Does anyone have a fix to correct this? I really hate having to tell all the users tomorrow morning a simple update wiped all their data.
    Carl

    Hi
    I saw your issue and I feel your pain. I did the same upgrade path to 10.6 and found that I had no users!. This is not your typical apple upgrade, the same as all other 10-X from day one. I cheated and used a new drive as I feel that upgrades may cause issues and I also used that as an opportunity to upgrade to a larger hard drive. After booting up on the new system with the upgraded drive I found the same issue to be true. I used the original drive, modified all my users to allow my new admin account to have rights to a user that I called 'move' on the old system. I booted up the old system modified all the users to allow user 'move' then I copied them to the new directory I set up that I called 'move' on the old drive, The next step I set up a new user 'move' on the new system drive and copied all the data from the old system drive 'move' to the new system drive 'move' I created all of my users on the new system drive. I set up all of my user accounts with a simple password 123456 on the new system I copied the users to there new directory. You could restore your backup on spare drive or an external drive with the old OS loaded. Postits on all the users monitors for Monday morning and... grumbling users with all of the data from Friday, get KrispyCreams and leave by the coffee pot [this step i forgot]. The users will talk about how nice it was that you brought doughnuts and not how there login is messed up [ha ha....}
I know that this is not an elegant or a quick solution but it worked for me and my 36 user accounts. If you know Unix script or Python or Apple script the procedures would be faster as you could batch the whole mess.
Hope this helps and good luck.

  • How to update from Mac OS X 10.6.8 to Lion or all the way to Yosemite

I have a MacBok Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8. How do I update to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion? Or if I go all the way to Yosemite, do I need to buy and download every Mac OS X between 10.6.8 and Yosemite? Are there any free (and legal) Mac OS X downloads between 10.6.8 and Yosemite?

You don't need to do any of the intervening versions but can go straight to Yosemite in the App Store.
This will of course prevent your Mac from executing any PowerPC code. So you should check to find out if you are using any apps coded for the PowerPC processor. If you have that it will need to be upgraded to a newer version coded for the Intel processor.

  • I am using Aperture 3 and recently installed an update from Apple. After restarting the computer and opening Aperture all of the "colour" is gone from the toolbar and events icons. How can I rest the colours?

How can i reset the colors of Aperture toolbars and event icons? They have all gone grey.

Have you just upgraded to Aperture 3.3 or later? The grey design is a feature, ot a bug
See the Release Notes: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518 (Aperture 3.3)
Newly designed monochrome source list and toolbar icons.
The only way to change it, would be to manually replace the icons by colored ones in the Aperture application itself. You would have to patch the application bundle and to exchange some of the tiff files in the "Resources" folder.
And each time there is an update you would have to start over.
There are quite a few discussions on this, see:

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Trying all day to download from APP store

Still not connecting,  just getting a spinning pinwheel.  Think if Apple chose to do update this way they would have better band width in place.

    Hello:
No, that should be fine.  I tried (early today) to use the link from the E-mail notification and got the spinning wheel.  When I opened the App store directly and selected OS X 10.7, all was well.

  • HT204350 I have an older Mac 07 that needs to be updated the apple store left our town, I've been trying to do free down load but not working any advice?

Hi, I have a older Mac early 07 I think, I'm trying to update it online since our apple store closed in our town.  Can anyone advise me on what I would need to do since the maverick free upgrade didn't seem to work.  Is there an earlier program that I missed?  I had gone thru a couple of brain surgeries so I might of missed some things.  Thanks

First, have you confirmed that your Mac is compatible with Mavericks? Here are the compatible models:
    •     iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
    •     MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
    •     MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    •     MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
    •     Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
    •     Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    •     Xserve (Early 2009)
so an early 2007 Mac of any type would not be compatible. If you'll run the System Profiler app (in the Applications/Utilties folder) and tell us what is says for the Model Identifier in the Hardware Overview, we can confirm what model of Mac you have.
    Regards.

  • Each morning I get a notice to download a Firefox security update. When I click install, I get a message saying Installing Firefox and Connecting to the update server. It never connects; the progress bar just spins all day.

Since shortly after installing Firefo 5 I get this message every time I start Firefox. A dialog box comes up that says Installing Firefox, followed by a spinning progress bar, followed by "connecting to the update server." It never progresses past this point and will stay this way indefinitely until I close the Window.
Also since installing Firefox 5, the program crashes at least once or twice a day and I have to quit and restart. Don't know if there's any relationship between the two issues.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.
