Updating from 10.6 to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

Hi everyone,
I am wanting to install Lion but of course I can't do that straight from Leopard, If I install Snow Leopard 10.6 or 10.6.1, can I just download the 10.6.8 update and skip all the others? I have capped internet which is why I am asking. What's the difference between a regular update & a combo update (apart from the huge download size difference).
Cheers!

You can absolutely; I would also suggest that instead of doing it via Software Update, you go to the Apple download page and download the combo updater 10.6.6 (that is the version the Mac App Store was included with. After you have that, go ahead and update to 10.6.8, again using the combo updater.

(this is the link to the 10.6.6 update combo)
And, the difference between a combo and regular update is: with a combo, you can go from 10.6.1 to 10.6.8, with a regular update, you can only move up one, i.e. from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2.

    Hello Nicole,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Mac. To get you started with getting it back up and running again, take a look at the article below to resolve issues with start up. Start with booting up into Safe Mode to see if it boots properly. If it does, then restart your MacBook Pro like normal and it should work after that. If not, look at the article for some additional troubleshooting.

It is needed to run applications that require Rosetta (Eudora e-mail, Palm Desktop PDA-PIM, Canvas drawing from ACDsee, etc). Thanks

Can the Mac mini October 2012 boot from Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)?
No. Your best option by far is to find updates or replacements for that long-obsolete software. In the long run, you'll have no other choice. As a last resort, you could do this:
Installing Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels
The instructions are slightly out of date. That's not a recommendation and I haven't tried it myself.

My iphone and my ipad are compatible but when I try to go to icloud on my phone it says to do it on my computer.
I would like to have my calendar, contacts, etc.. all sync like they do now. Is there a way to upgrade before June 30th? If not, will the gap be an issue or will I just be able to buy mountain lion and sync everything?
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

You can buy Lion in the App Store now, but move to iCloud now. If you wait to Mountain Lion, you will only have Mail in Snow Leopard, so you will lose syncing unless you use Lion or Mountain Lion. It's up to you

If you are syncing your iPad with your computer, one way to delete all your contacts might be to connect the iPad to the computer, then in iTunes select the iPad in the sidebar. Once you've done that, go to the Info tab. Uncheck the box for syncing Contacts, then in the lower right, hit Apply. All the Contacts on your iPad will be gone.
You haven't asked for solutions to use Snow Leopard with iCloud, but there are some solutions for Mail, Address Book and Calendar.

I want to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard, then to Lion. When trying to back-up to a WD 1 TB external drive, the back-up process stalls at about 4 GB download. I would be very grateful for any clues to assist with the back-up process please.

That disk is very probably formated as FAT 32, the normal format for PCs. FAT 32 cannot support files larger than 4 GB; also, it corrupts some types of Mac OS files. If you want to securely backup your mac files, you must have a disk prepared for Mac OS.
Therefore, open Disk Utility, choose again 1 partition for your external disk and, under Options, GUID partition map (it may also be a boot disk for an intel mac), then format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. Y0u are done.
If you want to exchange data with PCs, you should chose Master Boot REcord and NTFS format, for this you must use a additional utility like NTFS-3G. But note that mac files may also get corrupt in NTFS format.

John Hammer said it best -- backup first and always. That's why Time Machine and periodic clones of your boot drive to an external disk are so valuable.
That said – the Lion upgrade will retain all user data, files, settings, mail, and preferences. Mind you that a few settings and their location have changed.
Before you actually use Lion, may I recommend spending the first evening looking at every single preference panel in System Preferences.  Many of the user interface choices can be reverted back to mimic Snow Leopard if you choose.
Relax and enjoy Lion – it is amazing.  Please holler if we can help further.

  • Upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 directly to Snow leopard 10.6.3 (dvd)

After reading your advices I 've tried to upgrade my MacBook 2Ghz Intel Core 2 duo directly to Snow leopard 10.6.3 from the DVD. But it did not work ! The install program said it is not possible. Could you tell why and what I have to do ? By the way I can't find no more Snow Leopard in the Apple store ! I need this updated in order to active a new device and need to have the last version of I Tunes. So... Thanks for your help

Hello, BD Aqua many thanks for your prompt reply. It's a gray one. And the message is  "OSX can't 'be installed on this computer " or something like that. The installing program doesn't launch anything but just ask me the language I choice and after ...relaunching and relaunching ... nothing happens. However when I' ve called previously the Apple support they told me to upgrade directly in Snow Leopard. I want to be sure to have the possibility to install it before purchasing it and in which version ?
And do I have to erase my previous disk as somebody recommand it before installing the new OS ?

  • ITunes 11.1.1 Update Error - Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

    Hello iTunes Community!
I've been reading about the non-descript error message that Windows users are getting when attempting to update to iTunes 11.1.1.  It appears to affect Mac OS X as well in that I too am getting the same error.  I'm running a 20" aluminum iMac with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  What's interesting though is that when I checked iTunes to make sure it still functioned correctly and took a look at "About iTunes" it shows version 11.1.1 (11).  So it appears that the update actually occured, but somehow did not finish-up quite right???  Is there any cause to be concerned, or do I just keep it the way it is?  I ran the update twice and it still shows-up as an available update in Software Update.
I'm beginning to suspect that there may be a problem with the update.
    Regards,
    Doug

    Hi folks...
Based upon a recommendation from a friend who is an authorized Apple service provider, I downloaded the iTunes installer directly from the Apple/iTunes website and ran the install.  I worked perfectly and iTunes is working normally...  I think.
FYI, one problem I encountered with the Software Update version of the installation is that iTunes didn't "see" my iPhone 4S.  The new installation resolved that issue.
I hope this helps anyone else out there that is experiencing the same problem.

  • CAN'T SEE SHARED FOLDERS FROM THE PC ON MY MAC SINCE  SNOW LEOPARD UPGRADE

HELP! Ever since I've installed Snow Leopard on my iMac, I don't see my folders I selected for sharing from the Microsoft PC computer in my network anymore. I can't seem to locate anything. However the PC is able to see the folders from my iMac. If anyone has solutions to this problem, your help would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Pat

Your problem is probably the same one I described in my thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2133962&tstart=0
The problem in my case, seems to be that the SL mac is not setting itself as the master browser, so when a Windows PC is switched on, it doesn't update that computer in the finder sidebar.
You can see if this is the case, by opening terminal, and typing:
    nmblookup -M -- -
If it comes back with "name_query failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01" then you've got the same problem as me. With Leopard, my mac would report back as the master browser.
It's got nothing to do with the firewall (I've tried turning mine off ,to no avail). Also, my workgroup is correct, and smb sharing is turned on for the user.
