Updating G4 (Quicksilver)

I have a QuickSilver 867MHZ (2001 model), and wanted to know how can I update my HDD, Memory, and Motherboard. Where can I get a bigger motherboard (1.0 or more GHZ) from?
Can I put a intel (apple) motherboard in a PC powered computer?

Hi.
You don't have to upgrade the motherboard in order to upgrade your cpu/processor to the gigahertz speeds - the quicksilver motherboard you're already using can already do that, even dual gigahertz processors. You only need to look for compatible processors (your board speed is 133mhz). I'd look on eBay also, just type quicksilver cpu or processor, etc - just make sure that it's not for a MDD (g4 mirror drive door) which people often refer to as a "quicksiver" - these parts are not compatible with your mac. Here's an example from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/G4-Quicksilver-Dual-1-Ghz-CPU-Processor-w-Heatsink-FanW0QQitemZ170266296233QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item170266296233&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C 39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&trksid=p3286.c0.m14
I don't know if you'd end up spending $1000 in upgrades though (the above auction would be under $150, and easy to perform) - and I don't know of any new intel macs that you would get for that kind of money (and they don't support classic mode, as in OS 9.xx, and often are not upgradeable themselves). Video cards, RAM and hard drives are pretty cheap these days. You can even pop in Sata drives if you get a pci card adapter, which are extremely fast, large and affordable. Even the used and new video cards are pretty reasonable - I'm using a flashed PC ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128mb) in a quicksilver (was in a digital audio before), and it works great. No deep sleep problems or anything else - a very fast upgrade for under $100.
Not to diss the new macs or stop anyone from buying them (the new imacs are beautiful and efficient), but I do like to upgrade and use the older ones when I can - cos they're still beautiful and efficient also. And fun and rewarding to upgrade. LOL.

  • Windows Loose Content on Drag after 10.4.6 update on quicksilver

Ever since the 10.4.6 update i've had a problem where when I open a new window, doesn't matter what it is, and drag it or scroll in it the contents of the window Disappear and are replaced with whatever was behind it. I have to hit expose to fix it so that I can see the contents again. Hitting Expose seems to 'fix' that window for the duration of its use. If i open another window of the same application the problem exists in just that window, not the one i already hit expose on.
I formatted/reinstalled OS X 10.4 thinking that would help. And it worked fine for about a day, but then the problem started happening again.
Rebooting doesn't help. The only 'odd ball' application that I have installed is CodeTek's Virtual Desktop, but removing that doesn't solve the problem.
I have a G5 iMac at home with a nVidia card in it, and am not having this problem (the software installed is almost identical).
The only thing that i can think of is that the Graphics drivers may be having a problem: GeForce4 Ti 4600
    Any Ideas?

No one else has seen this problem? Seems odd that I would be the only one when it happens on a fresh install as well.

  • Recent Updating Issues

I'm currently running Tiger on my G3 ibook and last night I was alerted that there was software updates available. I don't remember exactly which ones, but I believe it was iTunes, Safari and possible mail and address book. I know it wasn't a Security update because since I had a similar problem to this one a couple of years ago, I always check these forums for conflicts before I let one near my system again.
Anyway, after it was finished and restarted, it hung on the blue screen right before my desktop loads for a half hour. I figured I would give it a bit more extra time since it always slows down right after I reboot after an update but that was a bit much. I forced it to shut down and booted it up again. Problem kept happening. Safe mode didn't work, so I went into Single User Mode. Everything checked out fine. Booted up again, it hung again.
So then I booted from an external drive. Everything checked out fine again after using Disk Utility to both verify/repair the disk and repair permissions. It told me nothing was wrong. But again it hung at that blue screen when I rebooted. Finally I booted from the install disk and just reinstalled the system.
Everything is working fine (well, as fine as it was on this old machine at any rate) but I was curious to know if anyone else was having this problem and what I should specifically avoid downloading when I update this time. Thanks!

I should note that I've routinely updated my Quicksilver G4 with the same updates and haven't had any problems at all. But this is where I'm at:
I narrowed down the conflicts down to:
SecUpd2009-002PPC (which was installed at the time already when I made my last update)
JavaForMacOSX10.4Release9 (which was definitely the new kid on the block stirring trouble if not being the cause of it)
This last time I installed all the Java updates until 7 without a problem without installing the security update. After I installed Release 8, it hung a little bit more but eventually it booted correctly.
Then, knowing that Release 9 was the newest, I installed the Security Update. I didn't have the exact problem as before, it now hung at the loading Os X screen rather than the blue screen that follows right before the desktop.
So I rebooted and used applejack to do a deep clean. When it got to the point of having to verify permissions, the disk error showed up about three times but then it continued on it's way and everything loaded fine.
This morning when I started up, my iBook decided it would be more fun to switch to Darwin rather than load my desktop. Not knowing all that much unix (though I think I should probably learn now) I was a teeny bit stumped. So after looking at all the great commands I could use via the help option and still not getting anywhere, I forced a reboot and went to single user mode, running a deep clean of applejack again.
And it restarted fine. I rebooted to make sure and it was fine. So I don't know exactly what is going on still. I backed up fairly recently so I'm not concerned with data loss, but I think it's time I just upgrade.

  • ARD admin can no longer control clients...

I have ARD configured on all my clients, and it seemed to be working fine. In the last week or so I found that I can no longer control my clients. I visit the client to make sure that the account is set up for ARD control, yet when I try and control the computer it doesn't work at all...anyone have any ideas to fix this?
    thanks

Same for me - I hooked up a Quicksilver Mac into my local Ethernet network (behind router), but cannot connect to it. I updated the Quicksilver Mac to ARD2.2 successfuly. ARD also allows me to chat with the computer since I see it in the ARD Status panel. So there must be some kind of connection.
However, controlling or observing returns a connection error.
One possibility: Client runs MacOS 10.3.9 ???

  • Updating Quicksilver: Need Help Starting Project

Hello fellows. Awhile ago I was able to purchase a used PowerPC G4 Quicksilver model from my former University for a very wonderful price of $40.
I've finally got around to wanting to updating it. I currently have an iMac which is less than a year old, but I've always wanted to update the old Quicksilver. So, I guess I need to know where to start and just what I can do for a few hundred dollars.
    Here are the basic specs:
    *Machine Name:* Power Mac G4
    *Machine Model:* PowerMac3.5
    *CPU Type:* PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    *Number Of CPUs:* 1
    *CPU Speed:* 733 MHz
*L2 Cache (per CPU):* 256 KB
    Memory: 768 MB
    *Bus Speed:* 133 MHz
    *Boot ROM Version:* 4.2.5f1
Things I know I can easily do are install a bit more RAM. Anywhere know where I could buy some that would work?
My friend said he could help me install a new CD/DVD drive that would allow me to read and burn DVD's. So, that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Any rec's on what to purchase?
Lastly, is there anyway possible that the processor could be upgraded? Intel? Is that even possible?
I appreciate any help that can be offered. Thank you!

This processor interests me because it's definitely an upgrade from what I have now and is only $200.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEG42M1200/
It says it's Leopard compatible; would that be as easy as installing this and having more HDD space?
    Thoughts on these two processors?

As for a HDD, I'm guessing the best thing to do would just be to install a second internal. Any suggestions? I don't think I'd go for anything more than 500 GB, and it would be where everything is stored, where the current would be the OS. Which currently, is OS X Tiger.

  • Why is quicksilver not updating available credit after payment?

I paid off my balance on my quicksilver before it's due so that I can keep using it (just got it a couple weeks ago so haven't had a statement yet or anything) and it says my payment is posted.  It's not pending anymore.  But it still shows that I only have $58.00 available credit instead of the whole amount even though it says I have a 0 balance. What am I missing here?

    Crazyinthesunlight wrote:
There's no pending charges.  I paid it on Saturday so I could understand if it was still showing as pending but it's not.  It says I have a 0 balance.  It shows the payment as posted but then it says $58 available credit.  So weird!  If it's not updated tomorrow, I guess I'll call.  I was just curious if this is how they generally operate and I'm missing something. If you call them the CSR should be able to give you an exact reason, but from my own experience it's not unheard of.  Years ago when I had a 'toy' limit on my QS1 when I first started making multiple payments during a cycle (which I did frequently) they would put a hold on my account, but they eventually stopped.  Now when my payments post the available credit is available immediately. (If you want to be really technical, when the payment post in the middle of the night it's usually a couple of hours before the available credit is updated, but most folks wouldn't notice this.) As a data point, the couple of times this did happen to me it was always when I allowed Capital One to do an ACH 'pull' from my checking account.  When I used my bank's bill pay to do an ACH 'push' there was never a hold.  This might be because it's generally trivial to have an ACH 'pull' reversed, and generally more difficult to get a bank to reverse a bill pay 'push' for fraud.  As with many things credit related, YMMV. It's a PITA, but the lenders have to protect themselves from what is referred to as a "bust-out".  It's when folks make multiple payments, then use the newly available credit for additional purchses before the payment bounces (or is reversed), resulting in a multiplied loss.

  • Firmware update on G4 quicksilver

Hi - does anyone know if there is a way to update the DVD writer firmware on a dual 867 G4 with mirror doors - without booting in OS 9??
The only firmware update i can find says i have to boot into OS 9 and i dont have that installed.
Verbatim have told me I need to do this in order to use their blank printable DVD's

I cannot fathom why anyone would have to flash their DVD burner to be able to burn using Verbatim Media. that is pigspit, hogwash, flim flam...or you are not correctly explaining the whole problem.
I use Verbatim Archive quality blank printable DVD-R's all the time and they always work with my DVD±RW drive and Toast.

  • Palm Missing Localization Information Display after Mac OS 10.4.6 Update

Recently I installed the Mac OS 10.4.6 update after confirming that it should improve some minor issues with "Hot Synching".
Previously I could "Hot Synch" with my Palm Mac Desk Top software 4.2.1 and also with my PC with no issues. My Palm is using Palm OS 4.5, I believe.
Now I can still can "Hot Sync" on my Mac--with no issues. However, when I take the Palm out of the USB Cradle and try to access the Palm Display page with the featured icons, I get a very unusual error:
"Application can not be launched because it is missing localization info file xxx--enUS.prc."
I checked the Palm site and entered the error message and the response was returned that indicated "several applications with the Palm Tungsten T require overlay files to run properly. "Dialer, SMS, & WAP Browser" require and overlay "prc" file that determines which language the application displays on the device. If this "prc" file is missing, it will cause this message to be displayed."
I was instructed to install the "xxx_enUS.prc" using the Palm Install tool.
I installed all of the "xxx_enUS.prc" files on Disk 2 and have performed a "Hot Sync" again. A successful "Hot Synch" was performed.
The above message is still displayed on the Palm screen even after that successful "Hot Synch".
I can not use any of the screen icons to select any of the features or vprograms on the Palm.
The face buttons can be depressed but the selection from the Palm hand held icons with the stylus can not be accessed as the "missing localization info, ect" is displayed.
I have performed soft resets to no avail.
I still can not get this issues resolved.
Recently I instlled iSynch and the problems still occur.
Anyone out there have any suggestions.

I don't use the synch. option. However, my RSS feeds are updating without problem after the update. If I remember correctly, the RSS feed update was affected by synching through .Mac? Is that true?
What method did you use to update your system. As a rule, I use the combo update. If you used the incremental method, I suggest using the combo update. Remember to repair permissions via Disk Utility after the update.

  • Upgrading G3 350 B&W and  G4733 Quicksilver from OS 9.2.1 to 10.4 Tiger

Hello again evryone...quick question.....Is there software that will install 10.4 Tiger on the two above mentioned computers (while running OS 9.2.1), or do they have to already running OS 10.3 or a version of X in order to do the install? I have a 10.4 (gray) install/restore DVD that opens on an external DVD drive very nicely, but when I click on the (install) button, I get the following messages: "The document 'install mac os X' could not be opened because the application program that created it could not be found". (could not find translation extension with appropriate translators.) When trying to boot the G4 from the G4 install/restore disk, I get an error message "startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk" -2 (invalid queue element)
I just updated the firmware for both the G3 and the G4, and both run flawlessly on OS 9.2.1????? Can anyone please shed some light on this? I've seen a couple of comments that I have to be running 10.3 first.....will a "full install" version of 10.4 boot from OS 9?.....many thanks in advance.........

One thing you should think about is the RAM requirements for 10.4 are much more than for OS 9. You may need about 512MB RAM for a minimal system, and more is better. You can find out how much each machine has using the Apple System Profiler, or from About this Mac... more info, under the apple menu bar item.
The 350MHz G3 may be pretty sluggish in 10.4, it will run, but won't be as responsive as in OS 9 with the limited CPU, RAM, and VRAM of the original machine. The Quicksilver G4 should be able to run 10.4 fairly well with enough RAM, go for 1GB or more if you can, is the max 1.5 or 2GB in those machines?
Check out the historical articles on www.lowendmac.com for those particular machines specs and for other useful reference information and possible hardware upgrades.
When making a major OS upgrade from OS 9 to 10.4 all your peripherals (printers, etc) will require new drivers, which may or may not be available. Check the vendor support pages for the 10.4 drivers, (if the company is still in business). You may discover that upgrading the OS will render older third-party hardware you have been using inoperable on top of making the whole computer feel really underpowered. So be prepared for upgrading the hardware, and external devices, and other third-party apps that you have depended on for newer versions as well. With 10.4 some OS 9 apps will still run in the Classic emulation environment, but some will require booting into OS 9.
You can install OS 10.4 right on top of OS 9 and continue to dual-boot the machines into either. But the disc space requirements for OS X will be greater than OS 9, what size drive do you have and how much free space do you have? Those older drives were fairly slow, and since you have limited RAM capabilities the hard drive will be in continual use for virtual memory when you launch several apps and switch back and forth causing some slow downs.
If you lack the hard drive space you could possibly install 10.4 on an external FW drive and boot from that, or install an additional internal hard drive.

  • IWeb won't start after update

    Hey!
I just ran a bunch of system updates and now iWeb won't start. I reinstalled iLife'06 from the DVD and rebooted, but no luck. I have also repaired permissions and rebooted. I just get one bounce in the Dock and this message in the iWeb.crash.log:
    Host Name: Garry-Computer.local

Sounds like something major is missing from iWeb or from the iLife install.
If you didn't delete iWeb and the install package receipts from your computer before reinstalling iLife, iWeb would have only been updated. If it was corrupted before the update, the problem would not have been fixed by a reinstall.
Backup your domain file before doing anything else! It's in username/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Put a copy in a safe place.
Then try deleting everything to do with iWeb from your computer, going to drivename/Library/Receipts and deleting all the iWeb package receipts, empty the trash.
    Reinstall iWeb.

  • Time to upgrade Quicksilver HD & DVR - What? How? Suggestions?

    Hi,
I am considering upgrading my internal hard drive and replacing my existing DVR. I hate to mess with things that are not broke, but I am at the point now that I think I need to just go for it! I am not too tech savvy so bear with me. I would appreciate any recommendations and/or suggestions as what to use & how to do it the least painful way.
    1. What type of internal HD do I need? Am I limited to the size I use? Can I leave the one I already have in the computer and just add another larger size internal HD - so I could have two? Do they need to be switched around?
    2. What kind of DVR would be compatible with my computer and what needs to be done to computer to do the upgrade. (NEC 3550A, or Pioneer 110?)
    3. Should I update to 10.3.9 before or after installing new hardware? (I've been scared to update - all works fine now. Anything I should do to avoid problems after updating????)
Here is what I have NOW:
    - G4 Quicksilver 2002 (800mhz/768mg)
    - Running OS x 10.3.8 & OS9 (even though I do not use OS9 that much anymore)
    - Pioneer DVR-105
    - 40gb internal HD(only 14gb left available!)
Sorry for all the questions. I have read some of the posts on here and think I have an idea of what I need to do, but just want to make sure and verify.
    Thanks in advance,
    Leah

Hi! Sounds like you're well on your way!
Any of the approaches you have mentioned should work okay. I would take the easiest approach and clone the startup volume from the 40GB drive to a partition on the 160GB drive, check the cloned volume to insure that all went well, then apply the updates to it from Software Update. When I was certain that the updates went well (no rush, give it some time), I would then clone the newly-cloned volume back to the 40GB drive, which would provide me with a complete and up-to-date backup volume that I knew was fully operational.
You can use Disk Utility's Restore option to create the clone, but I'd recommend Super Duper or CarbonCopyCloner, which are faster and less quirky. The links are below.
As long as you do not choose the option to clone to a disk image, the cloned volume will be bootable (if you make a disk image clone, you can't boot to it because you have to open/expand the image before you can do anything with it). Just clone one volume to another volume and it will be a bootable duplicate of the original volume.
You may boot from either the master or slave drive. It's recommended that the master drive be the startup drive for better efficiency, but it isn't essential. When two drives operate on the same bus, the master drive gets priority from the controller when both drives need to access the CPU at the same time. Since the system drive is the most critical one in relation to data flow with the CPU, it normally is set as master. This only affects your Mac's speed when both drives need access at the same time, though. Otherwise, it makes no difference whether you're booted from the master or the slave.
You can switch the drives around at any time if you wish - just be certain that the jumpers are reset when you change their locations on the ribbon cable.
Concerning "junk", the only time I do a fresh install of the OS is when there's a major upgrade, such as going from Panther to Tiger. That's when all my "junk" that's hidden in various folders all over the place gets thoroughly cleaned out... Installing everything from scratch on an OS update for me just seems to be too much work for the benefit that's gained.
Some third party applications tend to put required files in non-standard locations, which is one reason to be leery of copying apps over, rather than reinstalling them... the supporting files are easy to miss. Unless you have a lot of junk to get rid of, I'd stick with a clone of the whole works, weeding things out bit-by-bit afterwards, if you must. After all, you will then have a bootable clone for backup, if you mistakenly toss the wrong thing and have problems.
You are going to have two drives with a total of three volumes. Particularly as you use the second partition on the 160GB drive, please remain aware that there's no way to backup 160GB to a 40GB drive. As your data storage increases, you might consider budgeting for yet another drive somewhere down the line...

  • Various problems since Mavericks update

Since doing the Mavericks update a few days ago, I’m having a few issues with seemingly unrelated programs.
    1) Quicksilver
Works perfectly except for the triggers (shortcuts) that act on selected text. Eg normally I could select the word 'text' in the last sentence and press a shortcut to launch a Google Maps search for it, or a dictionary search, or compose an email with it as the title, or various other actions. None of these actions work.
    2) Afloat
This windows management tool normally works in all Cocoa applications to lock a window on top of all others, or make it transparent etc. But it's currently working only sporadically in Safari and several other programs.
    3) Safari is loading pages slower than usual.
Any ideas what could be happening? Should I reinstall Mavericks?
I'm running 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro. i have plenty of memory and nothing seems to be taking up undue CPU usage.
I've tried replacing various Quicksilver and Afloat .plist files in my library, but to no avail.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • NTSC DVD doc for PAL Europe. Updated Advice on IF I need to convert & HOW?

I have read with interests several posts on playing NTSC, all region DVDs on PAL DVD players. I hope someone may have some updated advice for my situation. In brief, I would like to give out DVD copies to festival goers in France where my Doc will play in April. I thought to produce DVD-Rs on my Mac.
With a film acquired documentary(24fps), transferred to NTSC video (29.97 fps) sitting as both Avid and Final Cut Pro Media on my trusty G-4, I am now ready to export a Quicktime Movie and then encode to MPEG-2, and "author" a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
Will an NTSC DVD now play on most DVD players and Televisions in Europe? (A contact stated their "players are bi-standard NTSC and PAL", but I'm still uncertain this means my DVD-R or replicated NTSC will play).
Should I make a PAL DVD?
IF I try a PAL DVD is it really as simple as exporting a Same as Source Quick Time Movie from Avid or FCP then using the QT MPEG-2 exporter and selecting "PAL" from within Quick Time? Then I just create a new Pal project in DVD Studio Pro?...... Even if it is that simple to create PAL from QT and my media, I don't see how my 24 fps/29.97 fps doc now magically becomes PAL 25 fps / 59.97 fps just because I converted it to MPEG-2.
Do you all recommend I try to make my own PAL DVD or should I just take my already authored NTSC DVDs and cross my fingers.
I really appreciate any newer thoughts on this topic. I'm an old pre-digital film guy so be kind.
    Thanks, Rob

Yes, although the vast majority of newer European DVD players and TVs have no problems with NTSC DVDs, the only way to be sure (well, almost sure) is to burn a PAL DVD. You can't legislate for the fact, however, that not all DVD players can play all DVD-R authored disks, but that's a seperate problem!
I generally use After Effects for quick and dirty (but good quality) standards conversion. Whatever you do don't just try exporting your project via Quicktime using a PAL as this will only change the colour space and not the frame rate or frame size. If you use QT to change frame rate it will simply repeat every fifth frame to get to 30fps which will give you jerky motion.
Here's a step by step guide to doing the conversion in Compressor 2, using "optical flow" to interpolate to get the extra frames :

  • Display no longer wakes from sleep after latest updates

    G4 Quicksilver 933, nVidia Ti, 1.5GB, 20in Cinema Display
I applied the latest updates that were pushed out recently (10.5.2 and the "Leopard Graphics Update") and now my Apple display will not properly come up when I wake the box from suspend.
That is, it starts and runs fine, but if it goes into sleep, upon waking it will (sometimes) flash the contents of the desktop, and then go black. The litte green light is on. Happens from a logged in session, or from the main login screen.
I have to hit the reset or power button (or login via SSH and issue a shutdown) to get it to work again.
I only have a single monitor.
    I tried:
o Powering the monitor off and on, both from the switch and by pulling the power cable
o Pulling the DVI cable and reinserting it
    o Resetting NVRAM
o Re-applying both the 10.5.2 combo installer and the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 in order
o Waving a magic wand... I mean, fixing permissions
o Changing the display resolution a few times
o Running fsck a few times (only because all these unclean shutdowns are making me nervous)
o Hitting the "Detect Displays" button in the Displays Prefs panel...
Aha! Hitting that button causes the display to flash and then go dark. I have to power cycle the unit to get the monitor to come up again.
I do have the special build option of the faster video adapter which was available all those years ago. It's quaint now, sure, but it was a fast card back then.
I'm stumped. It's surprising how something like this can turn a perfectly reasonable desktop into a boat anchor.

This Discussion is marked as Answered, but with my apologies to the other respondents, it is NOT. There is a problem. The software/hardware do NOT work as they are supposed to. Apple needs to address this problem immediately. Mac Book Pro will not wake from sleep when connected to a Cinema Display 23". The problem lies in the most recent operating system updates. Before the update the products worked as advertised, since then they do not. Period.
With all due respect, I am the one who posted this, and I marked it "answered." Yes, there very well may be a problem with the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 (what a mouthful! I dub it "LGU v1.0" from this point on.), but this is so far only a hypothesis.
I found an immediate workaround which suits my purpose. If this does not suit the purposes of completely foreign (to this discussion) symptoms related to Intel-based Apple laptops and external displays, then so be it. I recommend splitting off your own symptoms to a new thread.
Certainly, my reading of the symptoms described after I posted mine mostly do not sound like what I ran into at all. For example, I never once said that my computer had problems waking from sleep. I said the /display/ had problems waking/starting up after sleep, and this is probably related to the "detect displays" mechanism that the OS uses to find attached displays when it comes out of suspend. Even if this is my misunderstanding it does not matter, since this is how it comes across to a reader. This may indicate that someone may want to clearly and carefully describe /exactly/ what they are seeing, and the steps they took in order to come to any conclusions they might have.
This will help Apple, and it will certainly help others that search these threads with their own similar but different issues they need solved.
If there is a common reproducible issue related to displays and the most recent update(s), then Apple already knows about it, or soon will. As far as my immediate needs are concerned, this is answered.
