Updating iMac G5 PowerPC, 1.8 GB DDR SDRAM, software 10.4.11

Working with an "old" iMac G5 with a PowerPC G5 processor, 1.8 GB DDR SDRAM and software 10.4.11 I often encounter problems to load software and add
newer hardware. (Examples: iTunes 10, Magic Trackpad wireless, a.s.o). They all require an OSX 10.6 or later and/or another processor (Intel, Dual core). Can I upgrade my iMac with
a) hardware and b) by a software, later than 10.5? Thank you all for answering.
Leopard 10.5.8 is as far as you (actually we ) can go on a G5 iMac.
Leopard is no longer available from Apple so you will have to look on eBay or Amazon for a black retail install disk. Do not buy a gret update disk. Be prepared to pay some real money for Leopard.
iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to support Mac computers with Mac OS X 10.5.8 or PowerPC processors.

ssbrownWell you can upgrade your 10.4.11 G5 to 10.5.8. But you lose Classic, and don't gain any Boot Camp capability. Only Intel Macs have Boot Camp, and still no Classic. You also have be mindful, if you buy too new, you won't have Rosetta capability which allows PowerPC applications to run on Intel Macs that were designed for Mac OS X. I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? After deleting 17G of music files to make room on the 74G drive, The iPhoto and iWeb updates seemed to load okay, but the OS 10.5.8 update failed - message opened said the computer encountered an error and must shut down. Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I reset PRAM, I think.....?????
I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac. -
I have a IMAC 65 version 10.4.11 with 2 GHz processor and 1 GB DDR SDRAM of memory. I am trying to download the 10.5 update so I can update my itunes and install a new IPOD Nano and IPAD2 i recently purchased. Any suggestions.

IPhone 4s will not communicate with iMac g5 PowerPc
I bought a new 32 gb iphone 4s and I can't load it from itunes
can't get my iphone 4s version 6 to be recognized by my iMac G5 powerpc version 10.5.8
iphoto recognizes iphone 4s and icon shows up for the device and, but not itunes, no icon at all.
itunes gives me message:
"The iPhone “Alvin Bruning’s 4S iPhone” cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.6.3 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."
when in itunes i check for update itunes in menu and i get message:
"This version of iTunes (10.6) is the current version."
when i try to load latest itunes version 10.7 off Apple website i get the message:
"you can't open the application "read before you install itunes app" because it is supported on the architecture.Sounds like Apple screwed me again. They just figured out a way to make my computer obsolete. Great, now Apple does no longer support the iMac PowerPC G5 link-up to my iPhone 4s. Can't sync with all the music I purchased because iTunes does not recognized my new phone. Wish they would have told me that before I bought a new iPhone 4s.
Go out and buy a new Apple computer? Sure that's a good idea, than I can see how much of my gear is incompatable with "IT". Thanks Apple for supporting "Windows" users and dropping the support of all the customers who have been true to you all these years. -
IMac G5 PowerPC boots up and freezes at light-blue screen
PowerPC G5 20" iMac, 2.0GHz, +260 GB harddrive, 2 GB of DDR SDRAM
Leopard OS 10.5.6
Computer starts up and freezes at light-blue screen. Mouse still moves, bu no keyboard commands work. Only holding the power button will shut down the computer.
Tried the following:
- Able to boot into Safe-mode only.
- Ran OS Disk Utility to repair permissions and also MacTuneUp 3.6.0, and no change
- Tried changing start-up to boot from OS 10.5.6 DVD and still freezes with light-blue screen. Safe-mode allowed me to run Disk Utility but no difference.
- If I leave the frozen light-blue screen, eventually the iMac power-saving mode darkens the screen, until I move the mouse (then light-blue again and still frozen).
- I left my iPhone connected to the iMac, and when starting up the computer the iPhone started charging. When the light blue screen froze the iPhone stopped charging.
- tried starting computer with Options + Command keys
- tried + Options-Command-P-R untill you hear two beeps: Reset NVRAM (restart 3x)
- tried Resetting the SMU > Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord. > Wait 10 seconds.> Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer. > Let go of the power button. > Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Questions:

> I can work fine in Safe-mode all day, but limited resources. Is this a software or hardware issue?Based on what you have you tried I would guess it is hardware problem.
First iMac's without camera and with GeForce FX 5200 graphics card are known of having capacitor failures which can cause the machine either to become unstable in different situations or fail to boot up at all. I have repaired many of them and changing capacitors brought completedly dead iMac (no power, no nothing) up to life so capacitors mean a lot.
Second and third it's mainly the graphics card which fails, causing the machine to fail to boot, become unstable or boot with artifact patterns in picture.
There has also been power supply issues and Apple did issue a recall back then, I think you can still find article about it and check if your machine has serial number which fits to that recall problem. This way you could check if you should suspect power supply going bad.
Capacitor problem is usually easy to identify (open up the case and look if those can-like things are bulging or swollen) and quite easy to repair if you have bit experience in computers and soldering, iFixit.com provides great disassembly instructions. Graphics card problem is harder to identify because in that case it is the solder which breaks under the graphic chip so you cannot actually see the defect. It is also harder to repair atleast if you want the machine to work long time after that repair. Basically you would need to heat the GPU enough to reflow solder connections.
Because the machine can boot into safe mode I'm suspecting that you have some of these issues I described, safe mode does not utilize hardware at full power and disable full graphics acceleration for example. -
I have an iMAC G5 PowerPC (not Intel) running10.5.8. I sync my iphone to iTunes - but just learned I must have Snow Leopard to do so for my new iPhone 5S. Yet I can't install Snow Leopard as the G5 is not Intel. What do I do? How do I move music and pics? And keep them synced up as I purchase more?
Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok), and a fresh clean install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C, Fan rpms is around 1000
Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds

why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
I have restored this
from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.

There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.

Everytime I export from FCP using comressor I am lose my audio, any ideas as to why this is happening. Or do I have somthing turned off and I am just missing it? Dual 2.7 Ghz PowerPC G5 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM, Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Exporting via Compressor may be recommended but it is slow and doesn't fully support all available filters, etc.
Try exporting the timeline as a QT Movie (the "normal" export) using Current Settings and them submit the resultant clip to Compression. Works for me... -
All applications in iWork fail to open after installing latest apple update. iMac running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Have tried reinstalling from iWork disc but no improvement. Help!

I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

Newbie needs help trying to update iMac from OS X v10.6.8
Newbie trying to update iMac as far as it will go without having to purchase a new one yet. Can I update from OS X v10.6.8 to OS X 10.7 with the following specs: Intel Core 2 Duo; Processor Speed 2.66 GHz; Processors: 1; Cores: 2; L2 Cache: 6 MB; Memory: 2 GB; Macintosh HD: 63 items with 228.18 GB available?
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

recently updated iMac and macbook pro to mountain lion. Now mouse and track pad operate backwards i.e. scroll up and page scrolls down. how do you fix this?
System Preferences > Mouse -- deselect "Scroll direction: natural." Do the same for the trackpad > Scroll & Zoom preference.

What actually happens when you open it?
What app are you trying to play the files inside? Try iTunes.
I assume these files have DRM from the iTunes store. The Mac needs to be authorized to play them, open iTunes & select Authorize in the store menu, then sign in with the Apple ID that purchased the files.
Select the iTem in iTunes & get info on it (from the File menu) & you can see the account name that it belongs to. -
