Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?

    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

I'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

  • Newbie needs help trying to update iMac from OS X v10.6.8

Newbie trying to update iMac as far as it will go without having to purchase a new one yet.  Can I update from OS X v10.6.8 to OS X 10.7 with the following specs: Intel Core 2 Duo;  Processor Speed 2.66 GHz; Processors: 1; Cores: 2; L2 Cache: 6 MB;  Memory: 2 GB;  Macintosh HD: 63 items with 228.18 GB available?

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

I can't play the downloaded iTunes movie on my newly updated iMac to OS X Maverick. Why not? And How can I get it to work? Thanks.

Do you get any error message?
What actually happens when you open it?
What app are you trying to play the files inside? Try iTunes.
I assume these files have DRM from the iTunes store. The Mac needs to be authorized to play them, open iTunes & select Authorize in the store menu, then sign in with the Apple ID that purchased the files.
Select the iTem in iTunes & get info on it (from the File menu) & you can see the account name that it belongs to.

  • Install new hardware and update imac g3  os 9.2 to os 10 or get a pc

My dad owns an IMAC g-3 year (2000 or 2001) running os 9.2 that wont run his new scanner--"requires 10.1 os or later".
He is also not able to install the DSL modem program from Verizon as it also requires "10.1 mac os or later" to install---so he cannot download any firmware updates using the mac. He currently has 128 mb ram installed on this mac. By using his other computer--a pc--he and I were able to browse page after page of discussions and "support" etc on the MAC site but nowhere does it say--- how to play a dvd installation disk or even if this particular problem computer ever had a dvd capability--(if it ever did-- it does not work now)
--how much ram is required for os 10 (any version) for os 10 to work well with
--and even if he kicks out the 190.00 plus for the os 10 software and additional cdroms--if needed--that he will be able to use the discs purchased to update the firmware and software.
Other computer manufacturers offer on line profiling to get the computers capability and offer upgrade choices or a real person that walks you thru the process online or on phone--why not mac?
Anyone out there that wants to work for mac support?

Welcome To Discussions dying on the "service" pages!
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.8 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs must look like the images in the above links.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
    -128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
    Panther System Requirements

  • How to fix extremely slow printing from web pages with latest updates (iMac) & HP Office jet printer. (It was not a problem with earlier versions of Firefox & same computer & printer.)

The latest two updates of Mozilla Firefox are not useful for me because of extremely slow printing of web pages. It was never a problem before. Same iMac and HP officejet printer. How can I either fix it, or revert to an earlier version of the browser (without losing all my bookmarks) which didn't cause this problem?

Try scanning from your Mac.  Use Image Capture app in your Applications folder.
Click once on the scanner on the left side, then click on Show Details along the bottom.  Along the right side you will see LOTS of options for scanning and saving.

  • How do I install snow leopard on an external drive so I can update imac to lion

Hi, I have only one software program for which I need to keep using snow leopard. I would like to make a second start up on an external drive, and also put this software there, and then update my Imac to Lion. As I am not computer savvy, I would really appreciate step by step directions. so far, I have installed Lion once, found out the problem, uninstalled it ,  reinstalled 10.6.8, and restored all from back up. Now I need to figure out how to have both OS"s . I only need to use this software about once a month. I have also heard of something that makes a second machine as a virtual machine on the imac, but I don't know anything about it.  Thanks,

Simply clone your system drive to the external drive:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes. Upon completion proceed to the cloning.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
To startup from the external clone restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the arrow button below it.

  • Problems with Mac OS 10.4.8 update & iMac restarts

The 10.4.8 update has not worked on my 20" Intel iMac. Twice I tried it and both times I had reinstall EVERYTHING from a backup. After installing the update it did not restart. It comes up with the black screen full of writing.
I did it once, couldn't do anything about it so I trashed the HD and cloned a backup. Once everything was back to normal I again installed the 10.4.8 update, this time using the Combo Updater instead of Software Update trimmed version—same thing. The iMac would not restart. Same black screen full of sprach.
Anyone else had this? Or does anyone why why?
Also, my Intel iMac has a nasty habit of randomly restarting all by itself.
    Anyone else's do that?

What you are descrbing is a kernel panic, a good number of kernel panics are caused by bad RAM. Combined with your spontaneous reboots that sounds like it might be the issue. I'd get it on the bench somewhere (Apple Store, local reseller) and have the memory tested.
And no, random reboots and shutdowns are not typical.

  • Tried to update Imac G4, now wont startup!

I tried to be a big man and update my friends Imac G4 with Tiger for her. It almost got to the end of the installation but said there was a problem with the disk. So I intended to just scrap the project. I Own a powermac G5 so I wasnt sure how to get the installation disk out of her Imac, (she also didnt have an apple keyboard so i couldnt hit eject). So I got instructions to press commandoption+OF and then typed eject disk. Did that. but then the computer started but immediately showed a folder icon, then the apple, then after a while just shows a circle with a slash thru it.
i think I killed it, Someone PLEASE advise!
p.s. im not sure of the specs as it is not my mac
    Imac G 4   Mac OS X (10.3)

Rozco,<p?>Welcome to Apple Discussions. As the installation failed mid way that is why you're seeing the prohibitive sign.
Hopefully you've backed up all the data on the iMac first.
If not, connect the iMac and PMG5 using a 6pin to 6pin FW cable and boot the iMac in to Target Mode (hold down T during start-up) then back-up all data by drag and drop.
You can insert the Install DVD to the iMac and then try again.
You may want to zero the Hard Disk using Disk Utility (it's on one of the menus within Installer) especially as you now have a corrupt system on the drive.
If the installation fails again you'll need to inspect the logs within Installer to identify where the issue may be... Again these are available on the Menu Bar.

  • Updating   iMac G5 PowerPC, 1.8 GB DDR SDRAM, software 10.4.11

    Hello Mac'ers
Working with an "old" iMac G5 with a PowerPC G5 processor, 1.8 GB DDR SDRAM and software 10.4.11 I often encounter problems to load software and add
newer hardware. (Examples: iTunes 10, Magic Trackpad wireless, a.s.o). They all require an OSX 10.6 or later and/or another processor (Intel, Dual core). Can I upgrade my iMac with
    a) hardware and b) by a software, later than 10.5? Thank you all for answering.

Leopard 10.5.8 is as far as you (actually we ) can go on a G5 iMac.
Leopard is no longer available from Apple so you will have to look on eBay or Amazon for a black retail install disk. Do not buy a gret update disk. Be prepared to pay some real money for Leopard.
