Updating iPad but it keeps calling it an iPhone +

Can some one help or advice me what to try. My problem is when I connect my iPad to my iMac iTunes opens OK then the iPad syncs then I click on check for updates and an error is returned as follows, "iTunes could not check for an update to the carrier settings for your iPhone. An unknown error occurred (1651)." Note it says iPhone and not iPad. Also under this is more saying "Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." When I click on MAPS the programme works OK but seems a bit slower than normal, but the other programmes seem OK.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Try closing iTunes and reset your iPad. After the iPad starts up, try the download again.
To close an app, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the iTunes app then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

If you're getting a network connection timeout error when downloading the iPhone's iOS update, then try temporarily turning off your firewall and antivirus software until the download has completed.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

Take it to an Apple store genius bar to have the techs see what your options are for repair/replacement. An out-of-warranty replacement is $149 in the US for the iPhone 4.

Hi there trying to update my ipad but when syncing it syncs over all iphone apps how can i disable this to only update the ipad apps?

With the iPad connected and selected on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, you can use the Apps tab on the right-hand side to select which apps to sync to the iPad - there isn't a setting on that tab to say only sync iPad apps, but there is a tickbox (under the list of apps) for whether or not to automatically sync all new apps.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

If you are updating via wifi then connect the iPod to your computer and try there. And the other way around too.

Been trying for hours to update a 4s and the furthest I get is the "-1" error.
So frustrating, I guess a visit to Apple is forthcoming.

Found a fix on another thread that seemed to work.
Go into Messages preferences and uncheck "enable this account." Wait a few seconds, then recheck it.
Also disabled and re-enabled imessages on my 4S just for good measure.
