Updating iphone firmware?

I cannot get itunes to dwnload iphone updates.I think it is my network timing out and i cant find a place to adjust the download settings. So is there a place to download the firmware updates without itunes?

I had something similar in the past with FTP... rebooting my home router took care of the problem.... only did it on large files.
That is your common denominator - especially if it is 2 differt OS, on 2 different machines. Or your ISP, but the rest of the world is working OK downloading from Apple, i just did earlier today.

Put your phone in DFU mode,
Hold the Power Button (3 secs)
Continue holding the power button and also hold the home button (15 secs)
Release the power button while continuing to hold the home button (10 secs)
Your device should prompt with the "Connect to iTunes Screen"
    Restore.

Did you make sure it was the exact file for your device and the latest version? I just downloaded the latest file for my iPhone4, put it in the folder I mentioned above and it ran the install versus downloading the file. This problem where it times out after downloading is a big Bug within iTunes that has been there ever since IOS 7.0 was released. I wished these apple developers would just fix iTunes. There are a ton of complaints about this issue. I sure miss Steve Jobs running this business, I really feel like it's gone down hill after he left.
    I hope this helps!

  • Trying to update iPhone firmware and it's making me download update all over again!

    Hi all,
Alright so I am trying to update the firmware on my iPhone 4 which currently has iOS 5.0.1. I plugged it in, opened iTunes, and clicked update. I went through the agree/disagree  and the "backup/don't backup" popups Then, iTunes started to download the firmware update. After two hours of download time, it finally finishes. I unplugged my iPhone to make a call, then plugged it backin to go ahead and install the update. I go to my iphone on the left hand column of iTunes, click update, go through all the same popup windows and then iTunes stars to download the entire update all over again!!! I even checked the library directory where iTunes downloads the firmware/restore files (.ipsw files) to, and notice that the original update file is still there (iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw), and it is downloading the exact same file all over again. Why is it doing this? I don't want to have to wait another two hours!
    Thanks for any help,
    James

Try shift-clicking (windows) or option-clicking (mac) on the Check for Update button in iTunes and when prompted navigate to the .ipsw file.

    Hello UKFan643,
It sounds like you are seeing more data being used on your iPhone than you expect.  Sometimes other data is being used by information like contacts, calendars, the iOS software installed on your device, settings, and other system resources.  I recommend reviewing the following articles to learn more about storage capacity on your iPhone:
Understanding capacity on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1867
How OS X and iOS report storage capacity
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419
If you are still seeing more "other" data than expected, it may be that the iPhone was disconnected during syncing:
In the case of iOS device becoming physically disconnected in the middle of syncing music, podcasts, videos or photos, it's possible that orphaned files will be left on the iOS device. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions.
One symptom of this issue will be displayed in iTunes where the Capacity indicator for the iOS device will report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the device. To resolve this issue:
You can find more information and steps to resolve this issue at the following link:

  • Safe to use Dock when updating iPhone firmware?

When future firmware updates become available for iPhone via iTunes, is it safe to go through the update process connecting the iPhone to my MacBook Pro via the Dock or must it be using the cable only?
I read on an online forum that one user tried updating to 2.0.1 with the iPhone connected to the dock and it bricked it.

I use the universal doc to connect my iPhone to my iMac and there are no issues.
I did notice that there have been many posts in here regarding loosing music, contents, photos, etc and apps not working when using iTunes 7.7.1. So update/sync with caution. The iPhone would only be bricked if you did anything that Apple does not want you to do.

  • STILL updating iPHone Firmware... bar on phone hasn't moved in thirty mins

I am updating firmware to 4.0.2 and, well, I am STILL updating.
The progress bar on the phone has been at around 55% for around thirty minutes with no apparent movement.
Any suggestions? I have to leave work here pretty soon.

Hi mate yeah this is not going to work seriously here is what to do, i followed instructions from apple and this is guaranteed to work:
found out how to solve this go to unplug cable from phone and pc. Go to control panel, apperance and personlisation, folder options, view and select show hidden files.
Now go to C drive, users, select user name, app data, roaming, apple computer, itunes, and delete iphone software update. This deletes the faulty update 4.0.2. and will therefore get a clean copy when it restores phone.
Now plug cable to laptop only, go to phone make sure it off. Hold down sleep wake button and home buttom and it reboots it. Then plug in cable and follow the usual steps. It was ask to update carrier setting and you say yes, done this and it fixed my phone

  • Why can't I update Iphone firmware on authorized pc, it only goes on Main Itunes pc ?

    Hello,
I have a question about upgrading the firmware on my Iphone 3GS
Normally I upgrade my firmware on my main itunes pc,
but last time I tried to upgrade the firmware,
I was on my laptop which I authorized for syncing with itunes.
I got a popup window saying that I could only upgrade the firmware when I'm on the main itunes pc.
    My questions :
    1) Soon I'm going to format my "main itunes pc" ( currently windows xp ) and install windows 7,
how can I make it my "main itunes pc" again after installing windows 7 ?
    2) If this isn't possible how can I make one of my authorized itunes pc's
as a main itunes pc, so that I can upgrade from there ?
I looked all over the net for anwers, but couldn't find any,
all I can find is discussions of syncing your media on authorized pc's and such.
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Greetings,
    Soxbro

Well, if you've gone six months without trying it, why are you posting the question now?
Seriously, no one can help with vague descriptions of an issue that occurred weeks or months ago.
Try it again, does the problem still exist?

  • Updating Iphone Firmware freezes Iphone... How can I stop it happening

    Hi all.
I have a persistant and irritating issue that whenever I attempt to download and install an iphone OS update, it will get to about 75% complete and then freeze. In order for me to sort this out, I have to unplug the iphone from my Macbook and install the update on my PC. This also happens with my Ipad.
Its a pain as it then means that once the OS update has been installed from my PC, I have to recreate my iphone from the last backup from my Macbook.
Has anyone else encountered this, and solved the problem without having to resort to using another computer or some other method. Would a complete uninstall and reinstall of Itunes help maybe?
Id like to be able to plug it in, install and go without the faf im currently having.
    My set up is:
    Iphone 4 - 32GB
    Ipad - 64GB
    Macbook Pro 13inch - 4mb RAM, 320GB hardrive
My macbook is brand new and I was hoping it would have solved the problem by having a new machine, but (maybe stupidly) I resorted this new Macbook from the Time Machine backup of my old one so that all my data was transferred, so I think that if its something to do with the Macbook, the problem has been transferred over from my old one.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same issue. Initially I thought it was my phone, but now believe it to be the iMacI'm using to perform the update.
I first had problems when I tried to update my iPhone 3g to ios 4.0 a few months ago. It would get about 2/3 of the way through the update then hang. I took it to the Genius Bar and they were able to perform the update with no issues.
Then yesterday I tried to upgrade to 4.1. Had the same exact problem. I went back to the Genius Bar again and this time I was given a replacement 3g. However the replacement phone was only at ios 4.0. When I got home I tried to update the new phone to 4.1 and again, it hangs at about 2/3 of the way through the update. Since this has now happened on 2 phones, that pretty much means it's got to be my computer.
I've tried all the troubleshooting tips I could find. I've put the phone into DFU mode, tried different USB ports, removed and reinstalled iTunes, even reinstalled OS X 10.6 on my iMac, and I'm still having the issue.
Unfortunately now it looks like my only option is to use my Dell laptop to do the upgrade...how tragic!

  • Knocked off network by iPhone firmware updates and syncs

Every time I either sync the iphone or update iPhone firmware, I get knocked off my internal web network and must reboot my computer to once again have web and email access. It always occurs <during> firmware downloads, so I have to reboot my computer mid-download for the download to continue, and sometimes several times to achieve the full download. The (Airport Xtreme)router does not need to be rebooted. Nothing else I do has this effect (knocking me off the network). Very frustrating and time-consuming -- any clues?
    Thx!,

Do a search on this forum for "Dell Laptop". There are known issues and fixes for the USB ports and device drivers on the Dell laptops.

Using iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC running 64 bit Windows 7
First did a full back up of  iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
    Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour.

  • Update to iOS 5.1 causes iPhone to crash on "Restoring iPhone Firmware"

    Hello everyone.
I have been vry please with my iPhone 4 on Verizon for the last 6 months.  I was on iOS 5 which worked great.  Then this morning the AppStore icon had the familiar red circle indicating some apps had updates available.  I clicked Update All.  In there was an update for iOS5.1.  I clicked OK.
I gave me the usual License agreement etc… I clicked OK.
A few minutes later I looked at it and it showed a picture of a cable with an arrow towards an iTunes icon.  SO I plugged it to my computer and it launched iTunes.
iTunes tells me that my iPhone is in Recovery mode and I need to Restore.  Why is it in Recovery mode???  All I did was I clicked OK for software update!
I have no other choice but to click Restore.  It asks if I want to Restore and Update.  I click OK.
I downloads the software (25 minutes worth!!!) then goes through the motions.
    - Restoring iPhone software
    - Verify iPhone software
    - Verify iPhone Restore
    - Restoring iPhone firmware.
After it sits on that Restoring firmware with a striped bar for about 30 seconds, all of a sudden, a new window pops up and says "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (1)."
iMac 2.4G 24inch .  OS 10.6.8  All my software is up to date as of this morning.  That includes the most recent iTunes.
Nothing else is plugged in the USB ports.
    I have restarted the computer.
No third party firmware.  No illegal mods.  No jailbreaking or anything, all on the up and up.
I have called Apple tech support but was put on hold for 30 minutes and finally had to go to work.
I have done a search on this and other boards but could not find a solution.  Would anyone have any suggestion?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bo

    UPDATE:
I tried about 6 or 7 times with no luck.  Maybe trying even more would have worked as Milis and some others have said.  But I ran out of patience.
So I called Apple tech support.  After a few minutes a woman answered, I explained the problem, she said that since it was out of warranty, it would cost $29 for a one time incident.  I said that since I did not initiate this problem I did not think I should have to pay for anything.  Then she put me on hold, and evidently sent me to the slow cue.  I waited for about 20 or so minutes and another woman answered.  She was very friendly and tried to be helpful but this was clearly out of her league so she transferred me to a specialist.  A very friendly british sounding woman came on and really wanted to get to the bottom of this.  She did a remote access to my computer so she could see the contents of the log files.  After a while, she determined that it could not be repaired.  She told me the phone had to be replaced.
So she filled out a request to that effect, gave me the location of the nearest Apple store and made an appointment for me.  I went there during lunch and they replaced my phone with a new (or new looking at least) unit.  They set it up and now everything is fine.  It is still on iOS5 but I really don't have any pressing need for iOS5.1 so, given this previous experience, I'm going to stay with 5 for a while.
Bottom line is that this was a real pain and huge waste of time.  But Apple support did come through without any trouble (apart from the waiting on hold) and got things fixed and working again.  The people I talked to did not have any idea of what might have caused this.  But one thing I was remember is this:  Usually I always do iOS updates through iTunes with the iPhone connected to the computer.  This was the first time that the update was started with the phone unconnected because it came about through the "Updates" panel of the phone's AppStore icon.  I'm not sure why this would cause the firmware update to go south but that is the only thing I can think of.
At the end of the day, I think I have to put that in the "You want cutting edge technology? well it's going to work most of the time but every now and then there will be the inevitable pothole" column.

  • Updating to iOS 4.0 --- Stuck on 'Restoring iPhone firmware'

So basically, I was updating my phone to iOS 4.0 and all was going smoothly until now. It has been stuck on "Restoring iPhone firmware..." for the past hour and a half. My phone had turned off and I searched around and was told to turn it back on again, but still nothing has happened. My phone says plug into iTunes, but it already is. Can anyone help me?

alright guys i just got mine to work. im on a mac, i signed into a different user name, i downloaded a fresh copy of itunes from apple, and it all worked.
dont use the copy of itunes that automatically updated from itunes. REDOWNLOAD a copy from apple. i think that was the issue.
    steps for working
    1. restart computer
    2. log into a new user name/ or try your normal one, new user name worked for me
    3. download fresh itunes 9.2 from APPLE.

  • Cannot update to Verizon iPhone firmware 4.2.10

I cannot upgrade my Verizon iPhone from 4.2.8 to 4.2.10 via Windows 7 64-bit using iTunes 10.4. I end up getting error 3194. I've rebooted, turned off the Windows Firewall, unplugged all USB devices (including keyboard and mouse) and no go.
I put it in Recovery mode and got the same error.
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8 on it and a fresh install of iTunes 10.4 (had wiped it according to the Apple KB article and installed it newly). And when I try it there I get the phone is "not eligible" for an update. I thought Sophos A/V might be in the way and closed it, no go, and I also have no other USB devices attached, etc. etc.
Of side note, my latest generation iPod touch was updating fine via Windows 7 and now stopped after 4.3.3 and I cannot go to firmware 4.3.5 now.
Also, I had a similar issue with my same iPhone 4 trying to go from 4.2.6 to 4.2.8. I ended up going into the Apple Store, they did put it in Recovery mode and connected it to a white MacBook and it updated the firmware just fine. (By the way, they were VERY helpful at the store and handled me very quickly and were very nice and explained technical details to me when I asked).
Why I can't update the firmware on my own devices at home is a mystery to me. What do I do? Wait for iOS 5?

Lawrence, that did it! I had added in that line earlier on because I had gotten that as a solution to try while googling. So I deleted the gs.apple.com line from the hosts file, rebooted and tried again and it worked! I now have 4.2.10!
I had done the same thing on my Windows 7 computer, and it is removed now, too.
    So to recap:
    - removed the gs.apple.com line from /etc/hosts on my MacBook
    - turned off On Access scanning for viruses in Sophos
    - turned off Airport/WiFi
    - used my Ethernet/LAN connection to my Comcast modem (no other router inbetween)
    - and not sure if it mattered, but a clean install of iTunes
