Updating ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) to iOS 4.1

Hi,
So i just bought my ipod touch just over a month ago. I was hesitant to update it, to iOS 4.1 for fear it wouldnt work. I finally caved today and went to update it, as i was doing so, it has now said i need to restore. i have done every thing imaginable to troubleshoot it.
is there someone who can help me figure this out please?
thanks!
Cassie

Sounds like you're on the right track. I'm sure it's frustrating to do the same thing again, but sometimes what didn't work the first time works the second, for some strange reason.
Assuming you've been through [Troubleshooting security software issues|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125] without luck, this is what I'd try.
1)Unplug all USB devices except your keyboard and mouse.
2) Reboot your computer and turn off all anti-virus, spyware, firewall, etc software. If you're going through a wifi router, turn it off for 10 sec and then back on.
3)Plug your device into a different USB port than before, not using a hub, and go through the steps of [Unable to update or restore|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808].
4)If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495] and its related links.
Hope this helps.

  • Error code -120 when updating iPod touch 2nd gen 8GB to iOS 4.1

When i try to update my iPod Touch to iOS 4.1 it gives me an error -120 and it can't backup to the computer.

[Update and restore alert messages on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275] should be useful. I don't see error 120 specifically but I think the other info might help resolve your problem.

  • Help!! ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) is running by itself!

    I just got a ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) from a friend.
This ipod has some problem.. it is running by itself! When I on it, and for example go to Settings, it will just randomly go to a next selection as if responding to my selection but I never touch anything.. I've tried to reset to factory settings and it's updated to ios4.2.1 but still no use..
    anyone can help? greatly appreciated!!

  • How to restore iPod Touch (2nd gen.) to iOS 4.1?

While away from home, I updated my iPod Touch (2nd gen.) to iOS 4.2.1 using a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.6.3 and iTunes 10.1. I returned home, plugged the iPod into my PowerMac G5 with MacOS 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2.1 and, yup, got the message that I will need to install iTunes 10.1 if I want to sync with iOS 4.2. Of course, iTunes 10.1 is not compatible with MacOS 10.4.11.
I would gladly downgrade the iPod Touch to iOS 4.1 but I cannot find it on the Apple website. I do have a file "iPod2,14.1_8B117Restore.ipsw" in the iPod Software Updates folder in iTunes which might work, but as the iPod Touch is no longer recognized, I do not know how I would do that.
    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks for the replies.
I did search the forums for "iOS 4.2", "iTunes 9.2.1", "iPod Touch" etc. but I did not use the term "downgrading". So I didn't find the answer to my question.
I am not a big fan of Leopard, especially as there are Classic applications that I still use (no Classic in Leopard), but the PM G5 has more than enough hard disk capacity to install Leopard on a separate partition or drive so that I can run iTunes 10.1. If rebooting is a PITA, then I can use the MacBook Pro (running OS 10.6) to sync the iPod Touch.

  • IPod touch 2nd Gen 8gb will no longer Sync photos.

all the posts I could find that were similar had to do with ipods that were jailbroken and on Windows.
I have iTunes 10.1, iPhoto 6.0.6. running on OSX 10.6.5
    iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB OS 4.2.1
The Problem: Since I got 4.0 and later, I have not been able to sync photos from iphoto. itunes says that it is, the bar moves and says all photos have been synced, all the photos I want synced are checked in itunes and still nothing when I check them on my ipod. iPod says no photos in album. I tried deleting the ipod cache on my mac, nothing. I tried syncing to a single file folder with the same photos, same. I tried exporting all the photos I wanted synced to a separate folder to jpg and smaller resolution, same result, no photos on ipod.
Note. the photos used to sync up until 4.0
I have also tried starting from scratch and putting it back to factory defaults then going from backup. Same result.
I have tried rebooting both iMac and iPod, same thing.
and I hate how I can't just email apple and tell them the problem.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I just can't seem to find anyone else with the same problem.
Thanks in advance for the possible help.

I dont get an error message at all. itunes just does its normal business when syncing and says its synced, but no photos. I have never tried mobile me, so I dont think my problem is connected. I dont have $300 to get a new ipod. this makes me sad.

  • Ipod touch 2nd gen and have ios 4.2.1. apps that will not download, higher ios version needed

I have an ipod touch 2nd gen and have ios 4.2.1. I recently tried to download some apps and received a message that said I need a higher ios version (like 4.3 or higher). I know there used to be apps that worked before but I deleted them. When I tried to re-download them again they say they won't work. Options?
    Thanks

Import the older versions to the iTunes library from your computer or a backup of it, or buy a newer device, or give up.

  • Update iPod touch 2nd gen to iOS 4.2

    Hi,
I'm having a problem updating my iPod touch 2nd gen to iOS 4.2. When I connect it to iTunes (version 9.2.1 as I'm still on OS 4.11) and click "Update" it returns an error message saying "This iTunes version is the latest version (9.2.1)" and no update will happen.
I'm willing to believe this is due to the fact that I'm using Tiger, but surely Apple would want even users of older versions of their software and hardware to update their stuff, wouldn't they? Anyway, I hope there is a workaround for this, as I'm very keen on starting to use Airplay.
Thx in advance for your help!

"So basically I need to buy a new computer (as I'm pretty sure my G5 cannot be upgraded to Snow Leopard) in order to update my iPod touch to the latest iOS version?"
No. Can your computer not handle Leopard?
"That seems a bit over the top, doesn't it?"
NO. Quite normal that newer products require newer software. Happens constantly across the entire industry.
" And essentially this means that Apple is withholding the benefits of iOS 4.2 from what I believe to be a substantial group of Tiger users. Doesn't seem fair, does it?"
Not even a little unfair at all. It is completely and totally normal, average, everyday.
You want the latest technology and features, you need the latest equipment and software. Nothing the slightest bit unusual about this.

  • Can't update ipod touch 2nd gen to iOS4

Hi, I have a old ipod touch 2nd gen. I just did a factory restore and it was restore to iOS 2.2.1. When i click Check for Update in iTune, it says 2.2.1 the current version. How do i get to update the ipod touch to iOS4 ?

Are you sure you don't actually have a 1G iPod Touch?  See this article to help you determine what generation it is.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1353
If it's truly a 1G iPod Touch, you can only upgrade to iOS 3.1 using this link to purchase the update.

Otherwise, if you do have a 2G iPod Touch, make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes.

  • Selling iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB

Hi i was wondering if apple will buy an old ipod touch that i have 2nd gen 8GB and does anyone know about how much apple would offer

    No.
Apple sells ipods, they do not buy them.
They have a recycle program. They will give a 10% discount on a new ipod if you bring in an old one for recycling.

  • HT1353 how to upgdade ipod touch 2nd Gen to lastest iOS?

I have iPod Touch 2nd Generation (Modal : MB528LL) with Version 4.2.1 . How i can upgrade the iOS on this device? Can i upgrade it to iOS5 or higher?

Try using one of these tools:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps. (my recommendation)
    Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
I typed "video streaming" in the search box iOSSearch, and got pages of potentially good apps.
I don't know what sort of setup you have. I have a DVD player with an iPod socket and I can stream videos to my TV with the standard YouTube app. I have a 2nd generation iPod too.

  • I've just updated iPod touch 2nd gen to iOS 5 and it keeps crashing

It just keeps going back to the Apple logo on the black screen and restarts.
This can happen before any apps have been loaded, or when, it's quite indiscriminate.
This renders my iPod a paperweight - please help.

-Try a reset. Nothing is lost:
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - You may have to place the iPod in Recovery Mode to allow the restore
    - Also, if you can't fully turn the iPod off (that is required to place the iPod in recovery mode), let the batter fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the reset and restore again.

  • Can't Update ipod touch 2nd gen

I purchased a used ipod touch 2 nd gen 8 gb. ITunes prompts me to upgrade to iTunes to IOS 4.1 from 2.2.1 but I get an error message #1 saying there is a hardware issue.  I have tried all of the things the guide says to do but it still won't work.  Any suggestions?

    ERROR (1)
    - Place the iPod in DFU mode and then restore

    - Try on another computer
    - Try another cable
    - Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

but im scared for my songs. is there a way i can get it back. im scared to plug it back in because im scared of shorting a circuit or something ir making the situation worse
i dont know what to do and its in rice at the moment and im scared to plug it into my computer
how do i get my songs back thats what im worried about atm

    saramusicentral wrote:
what do you mean. the songs from my ipod aren't on itunes right noww
    i think
Its ewasy to remove any doubt.  Go to your computer and launch iTunes.  At the of the left frame you should see the word Music.  Click on Music.  You will see your music either as a list, or as a list with the album art (cover flow).  If you do not see any songs, then you're done.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen (8gb) Loads to Apple symbol, then turns off, and repeats.

Okay so I went into my settings to do a reset on the iPod Touch. I did the reset and now all the iPod does is load the the black screen with the Apple symbol, stay on for a few minutes, turn off, and repeat.
When I connect the iPod to ANY computer with iTunes, it doesn't even show the iPod as connected. I honestly do not know what to do.
Does anyone have a solution on how to fix this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

Did you by chance not have the iPod connected to a charging source during the erase? It can take hours ao a 1G and 2G iPod and fully drain the battery before it is complete.
