Updating iTunes for new Nano

I got a new iPod and of course it will not work with my existing iTunes from my old iPod. ITunes tells me I need the new version. So when I try to load the iPod and iTunes disc, I get an error message that says "Another version of this product is already installed", and to remove it using the Add/Delete programs function. It seems like last time I did this, it erased my whole library. Is there a way to update the iTunes software and not lose everything?

Just goto the very top of this web page, hit the "iPod+iTUnes" tab and download the latest version of iTUnes. Installing this will not wipe out the library

That's consistent with another application (other than QuickTime) having dropped old QuickTime componentry in non-standard locations on the PC.
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view options on the PC.
1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

Doublechecking before proceeding ... what's the precise text of that message, please? (There's a couple of different ones I can think of that you might be getting.)

If you already have iTunes on your computer, then open it up.
Go to the menubar at the top of the screen, and select "Advanced"

It sounds like you are getting an error stating that the iTunes installer cannot be run on your computer. I would try downloading the 64 bit version of iTunes from here:
iTunes 11.1.3 for Windows (64-bit)

If issues persist when trying to install it, I would try running through the steps in the article named:

ITunes tells me there is new software updates available for my nano and when I press update it tells me that iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server b/c I'm not connected to the internet (I know that I am or I could not submit this)?

Problem transferring contents of iTunes to new Nano

I have just bought a new Nano. When I plugged it in, I expected that my existing iTune library from my old 20GB iPod would simply load up, but it didn't. The size of the library is currently 1.5GB. The new iPod appears in the source window. If I unplug the iPod and plug it back in, I get an error message saying 'X could not be copied to iPod as could not be found'. Can anyone help?

Before deleting the songs, can you locate them on your PC? If you can, what format are they? Possibly, something that I cannot explain, a dang gremlin is in the midst.
If you find the songs, then try clicking on it and let iTunes read. That is, if you have it setup for iTunes to be the default player.
