The most recent iTunes version for Mac OS X 10.5.8 and PowerPC-based Macs is iTunes 10.6.3, so open  > Software Update, and install this version.
If you have an iPhone 5 or a new device and you can't sync it with your computer, you should know that you need iTunes 10.7, but you can't upgrade Mac OS X or iTunes, so you need a new Mac or PC

when restarted- relaunched itunes
ipod updater came up and said that the ipod could not be updated b/c it was pc formatted
then only option was to restore.
do not want to restore ipod on mac. want to use on pc.

Welcome to the discussions. I'm not quite sure what happened here. However, I have a few questions. Currently, if you plug your iPod into your Mac, does it show up in iTunes? Have you run the latest iPod updater on your PC? Now, are both of your iTunes versions the same on Mac and PC?

I have tried to find how to update itunes on my mac to 10.6.3 version but currently the only update I can find it an 11.something and it is saying I have to have an even newer update then 10.6.3 to update to the 11.something the reason I need to update the itunes store on my mac is because my ipod touch 4th g has to have a newer version of the itunes store in order to be able to sync

You need to Upgrade your Mac to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x

I went to sync myihone and it said i needed to update my itunes, so i downloaded the update and when i went to update it, it said i needed mac version 10.6., so i downloaded this, and when i went to install this, it told me "you need version 10.6. to update this". That error may indicate a problem with the download through the Mac App Store

I can't update itunes with Mac OSX 10.5.8

I upgraded to a Iphone 5 and tried to back up my Iphone 4. I was told I needed to upgrade to the most recent version of I-Tunes. I downloaded it and it told me that it wasn't compatible with my operating system. Now I can't back up my IPhone 4 so I can transfer the data to my new Iphone 5. Any suggestions besides upgrading my operating system?

Make sure you have the latest iOS version on your phone! If you dont have an iCLOUD account... Set one up!
Theyre FREE! once you do that, make sure youre connected to a wifi network(will go faster) and back up your phone to ICLOUD. There no longer is a need for you to back up your phone to a desktop unless your just hellbent on doing so. The Cloud is awesome. If you were to lose or have your phone stolen or it just dies and your away from home youre hosed right? Well only if you just back up to your desktop. If your backed up to the cloud you can get the info to your new phone from anywhere in the world, relatively speaking. Also you have access to findmyiPhone.
ps. Almost forgot. You only need lion if you want to sync your desktop to the cloud. I e. your phone updates icloud, your desktop updates icloud, icloud updates both your phone and desktop. The desktop is about to become irrelevant! pshaw.

Did you attempt to update with Software Update? Try this instead: download the combo updater here:

In order to download iTunes 10.7, which requires OS X 10.6.8, you have to buy OS X 10.6. It's available from the online Apple store, in the US by calling 800-MY-APPLE, or online here. After OS X 10.6 installation, run Software Update until there are no more updates available, at which point you'll be at OS X 10.6.8 and can install iTunes 10.7.

My library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes on a Mac. I can connect from wife's Windows laptop using iTunes for Windows but every time I do, it Updates iTunes Library. Next time I log in from my Mac it Updates iTunes Library in return. It appears I'm experiencing "Update Wars" between the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. I would like to allow my wife to stream iTunes songs to her new laptop but I don't want any updates from this source... prefer to manage the library from my Mac and not allow Windows to do any thing other than listen to existing playlists.

Connect the PC to the library on the NAS. Wait while "updated".
Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure the media folder is correctly pointed at the media folder on the NAS. If not correct, close iTunes, wait a few moments, then open iTunes again.
Close iTunes on the PC. Do not open iTunes on the Mac.
Copy the library files, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into an empty iTunes folder on the PC, for example C:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the copied .itl file, e.g. C:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
The library should now work properly on the PC, however check the setting for the media folder. If needs be correct, close iTunes and reopen.
Open iTunes on the Mac. It will update again, but that should be last time.
