Updating library on 2 different computers

hello everyone,
I have 2 different computers that I use for music almost everyday, one at work and one at home so i have all my music on my portable drive. I spend many hours organizing my 90 gb of music at home this weekend and I'm updating my library at work. what i usually do when i have new music is sort my music library in finder by "modified date" and just drag the songs that are new into the library and it automatically adds them to the library. since this is a pretty big change to the library, i deleted the library files on the work computer so i can start with a fresh empty library. I just started import files to the library and i realize in the finder that some of the files/folder were modified (when i sort them in the finder some of the files show "modified today").
Since I want my library at home to be the primary library (where i update my ipod as well) I was just wondering if there is going to be an issue when I use the same music files at home since they were modified by another library. what exactly did itunes change in the files?
Another questions is what is the "album artwork" folder for? I thought all the artwork are embedded into the mp3 files. is this for the images' cache?
Thanks in advance guys!

It could cause problems for the reason you state -- the files will be modified by different libraries.
*what exactly did itunes change in the files?*
Probably the metadata such as playcount, rating, etc. So, even by playing it, you have modified the file.
I have not had much luck using different libraries in iTunes other than with this nifty application: http://homepage.mac.com/sroy/libra/ -- I use it to keep track of 6 different libraries across 2 hard drives. The metadata is different for each track in each library, though -- so files are not shared between libraries (at least not the way I use it). But I do regularly move files from one library to another, using smart folders in Finder much the way you do (but I use "Created" instead of "modified"). Hope that makes sense.
As for album artwork, I have never found this to be a problem. As soon as a music file is imported into a new library, the album artwork seems to automatically come with it (presuming it already existed).

  • Separate Library for 2 Different Computers

I have 2 different computers that I need to have 2 separate libraries. The problem is my wife and I share the 'My Documents' folder. I have an iPod 60GB, 5G and I'm trying to setup her iPod shuffle. I'd like her to have a separate database/library, but since we both share 'My Documents', I'm having difficulty getting iTunes to look elsewhere for her login. Is there a file outside of the normal preferences that I can change or hardcode for her situation? I've tried pointing her 'My Documents' settings to a directory on her machine, but that's no good because she can't get to her other files then.

Hi - I hope this thread can help me out. Here's the situ... I have a main computer/itunes library at home. Meanwhile I have a work laptop where I've purchased some itunes music which I mainly listen to at work. Now, I want to transfer the music I've purchased from my laptop to my computer at home (and then synch with my ipods). my laptop is not exactly easy to copy files, but I can do it via flash drive onto the home computer (can't figure out how to network the laptop onto home computer). In any event, when I drag the song into the home itunes library, it will show up in the library, but only play when the flash drive is in. As soon as I take the flash drive out, itunes says it can't find the file. Um, help??

  • Can I have the same library on two different computers

I have my iTunes library on a external drive linked to my work computer. Can I link it to my home computer too?

If it is only the media files that are on the external drive, with the library files in the default location of User's Music\iTunes then see Make a split library portable.

  • How do I share one library on two different computers?

I have a desktop G5 that has the majority of my music on it. I also have a MacBook Pro. They both have home sharing turned on. However, if I'm on the road with my MacBook Pro, I don't see a way to access the "shared" music from my home-based G5. Seems simple enough to figure out but I can't seem to get it.
I was  going to copy the iTunes folder from my G5 over to the MacBook Pro but transferring 2.4 GB is kind of a drag. Any other solutions?
    Thanks.

The iCloud service would only work if you had a wifi connection when you are traveling.  You could also use a flash drive to store your music.  Same concept.  I can see how a big hard drive would get a bit annoying, but since your iTunes library is relatively small.  You could just get a small 4GB flash drive.  That would work fine too.  That is your only option unless you want to transfer that data whenever you travel, which wouldnt be too big of a hassle really, right?  iCloud requires a Network connection to work.

  • More than one Library on two different computers

When I purchased my iTouch I took it to my work and downloaded itunes on that computer and imported hundreds of songs from some CD's. I had no problem syncing my iTouch. I recently downloaded itunes on my notebook at home and opened my library (or started a new one?) but none of my songs were there...so I bought some new ones and tried to sync them. A pop up said it had detected my itouch has been linked to another library? and I could either sync these songs which would erase all my songs on my itoch or I could manually drag and drop the new songs to my itouch. So can I not have two seperate libraries? How do I combine both? I'm really confused and I've searched the "help" in itunes to help me but I still confused???? Isn't there a flippen help hotline number???

if you dont care about artwork, itunes, preferences, sharing, click share my library on host machine that has all your data.....look for shared libraries on the client machine

  • HT1364 I used these instructions to move my i-tunes library to the external hard drive that two different home pc's access. My playlists do not show on both Is it possible to have one i-pod synch amid two different computers that use the same library?

I have a sole i-pod and two pc's, used the instructions for "iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder" in the hope that I could synch my one i-pod between two different computers that are sharing the same library. Is it possible to have two seperate computers that only share an external hard drive (one wireless, one not) ? When I am looking at a shared library should it appear the same on both machines (ie: playlists/ purchased list etc)?

If it is moved correctly, playlists will display on both computers and it should be possible.
    Close iTunes.
    Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new or open an existing iTunes library point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file on the external drive.
The entire library should now show up with all playlists and playcounts.
    Do this on both computers.
Keep in mind that only one computer can access iTunes at a time, otherwise errors will occur when each computer attempts to write to or update the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
Syncing may work seemlessly with both computers, but honestly syncing is designed to work with one and only one computer.

Can you sync an ibooks pdf library in icloud among different computers?

If you set up your email account(s) as IMAP instead of POP3, then each computer / smart phone can view the mail, but if any of them delete a message (or move it to another folder on the server), the same action will be seen on the other computers.

  • How can I use the same "I Tunes" on two different computers

I’m using two different kinds of Personal Computer: One is Desktop PC And the other one is Notebook .
In each computer there are the same songs and when I get the new ones to the Desktop I want them to be placed on the Notebook or reverse.
Where does the I Tunes save the playlist on the hard drive ?
I have prepared a playlist on my Notebook and want it to be seen on the Desktop but I dont want to fallow the steps File > Library > Export Playlist on the Notebook. Is there any other way to make this issue instead of the mentioned steps.
How can I see the same Playlists and songs on two different computers ( notebook and desktop) including the updating processes.
    Operating systems of the computers:
    Desktop: XP Pro
    Notebook: Vista Bussiness

I use SyncToy 2.0 to keep two instances of my library in sync. SyncToy's preview will show which files it is about to update giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the changed files will be copied saving lots of time.
As long as I sync after making updates at one instance of the library before making any updates at the other then everything works just fine. I periodically run iTunes Folder Watch to check for any orphaned entries or new items that haven't been imported into the active library. If your machines are regularly networked together this process is fairly straightfoward. Mine are in disparate locations so I use one of the (physically) small WD My Passport host powered drives which I take between home & work, synchronising at either end. This gives me three complete copies of my library so I'm covering backup & synchronisation in the same operation.
When connecting my iPod at either location iTunes recognises itself as the "home" library for the iPod so I'm able to use the sync with selected playlists option without getting warning messages about the iPod being synced with a different library.

  • Loading songs onto same iPod, different computers

Can you load your iPod from different computers (iTunes installed on both)? When I tried to load some new stuff from a different location, it says it's linked to another iTunes library, do I want to replace what's on the iPod with the new library (something like that). Will this wipe out all my current songs on my ipod?

    Yes it will.
Sadly you can't change the settings inside iTunes until the iPod is connected... the default setting is to automatically update the connected iPod with the computer's music library.
However, it is possible to do, although a little unconventional and would probably not be something apple would recommend...I have done it several times with no effect to the iPod.
    Connect it to your computer
As soon as iTunes recognises it, change the settings so that you manually update iPod, then...
manually disconnect your iPod without ejecting it
Wait for a few moments and...
    Bob is your uncle!
Reconnect and manually update at your own leisure keeping your old tunes

  • Put itunes downloaded from different computers on same ipod?

    Hello,
I have downloaded itunes onto two different computers using the same account. How do I put these itunes onto my ipod without deleting any content? Thanks, Jake.

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer change the update setting on your iPod to manual. Connect your iPod to the computer you are using it on now an in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing Your Songs Manually
    For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.
