Updating Library on iPod
Hello All,
I posted over at forums.macrumors.com and haven't had an answer yet and Googling is getting me nowhere. I thought I would post the issue here to see what might be done.
I recently used my 60 GB 5th gen iPod to move a file from my Mac Mini (PowerPC G4 running OS X 10.5.8) to my iBook (PowerPC G3 running OS X 10.2.8).
It was a simple .zip file and I used the iPod as a drive because using AFP between the two was going slow. Transfer was complete and I took the iPod back to the Mac Mini to delete the .zip file.
Here's the issue: when I connect it to the Mac Mini it launches iTunes and gives me an "Updating library on iPod" message. When the progress bar fills up it will do 1 of 2 things.
1. It will display the iPod in the window and if I try and click anywhere in iTunes the application freezes and has to be forced to quit.
2. It will not display the iPod and just have the beach ball spinning.
Is there an issue because the iBook was running iTunes 3.0.1 and overwrote the library file on the iPod and now iTunes 9.0.3 is trying to update that file? If so, how do I correct this? Without the iPod connected iTunes launches and plays with no issues. And from what I can tell none of the music has been deleted from the iPod. The .zip file was deleted just fine but now I am stuck.
As always, any help or suggestions is appreciated.
That is exactly the same problem I've been having on my iPod 20G.
1. I've just upgraded my PC with XP, including Service Packs and updates.
2. Installed the newest iTunes
3. Imported all music files over from scratch, (did not import old iTunes library).
4. Installed iPod Updater 2006-01-10 for my version of the iPod.
5. Installed the new version for the iPod.
6. Then used the restore feature to wipe the iPod clean and then plugged it into the power supply like instructed by the Updater.
7. Launched iTunes with the iPod not connected.
8. Then connected the iPod and created a name for the iPod.
The problem occurs when the draging created Playlists to the iPod. It starts transferring files and then stops anywhere from 50 to 70 songs into the process. When it freezes, the iPod's "Do Not Disconnect" icon stops flashing and I can hear the harddrive inside the iPod still spinning. If you press the reset combination on the iPod at just the right time, it will reset. From that point I have formatted the iPod and started from sratch three times but it keep freeze around the same number of files. Still happens with different playlists.
Any suggestions?

"Updating Library" appears on iPod for extended period after syncing
I have a 1st generation 32 GB iPod Touch and after I sync it with my iMac (or any computer for that matter), it says "Updating Library" for up to 30 minutes after unplugging it. Is this because of little free space on my iPod or because of its age or something else? I wonder if it is simply freezing up. If I turn it off and turn it back on, sometimes it will be fixed, but many times my "Recently Added" playlist is gone.
What should I do?I'm having this same issue, did it ever sort itself out?

Cannot copy songs from library to ipod - says need to run updater but ipod
Cannot copy songs from library to ipod- says the software is too old and updater needs to be rund. However, the updater has been run and says the ipod is up to date. I have already run the restore so the ipod is empty.
The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
So, transfer of any songs added (or removal of any songs deleted from iTunes) should take place automatically every time you connect the iPod to iTunes. -
When your iPod keeps displaying the "Updating Library" screen
I have a 8Gb iPod Touch and I synced a couple songs on it last night. But when I tried to listen to the songs, my iPod displayed "Updating Library" screen then it exits out of the music completely. This happens after I charged it and updated my iTunes. It's been an hour and its still saying "Updating iTunes Library". Help! What can I do to fix this problem?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

As it says above, i have been having a lot f trouble with my ipod classic and the latest itunes update, i was unable to sync songs or anything to it and have tried every conceivable 'fix' i could find. i have run an itunes diagnostic and the results are posted below. a major problem is that when i try and view my ipod through my computer it displays nothing at all on the ipod, no files or anything, this may be the problem but i have no idea how it has happened or how i could resolve it.
This ipod holds huge sentimental value and i am loathe to buy a new one! If anybody can help it is greatly appreciated, than kyou in advanced.

My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc. -
I updated my daughter iPod touch. Now the music states that it is on iCloud and can be accessed using WiFi or cellular. I need to move the music back on the iPod so that she can listen to it without WiFi. I tried to Restore backup but still does not work. I tried to sync, still does not work.

Hi, synching OK with all other features of iTunes however my photo library just has the message: 'updating library, please wait'. It never stops & so I need help please.
Running Windows Vista & no issues with my iPod Touch.Have you looked at the past discussions on this same problem? You can easily find them by using the search function the right and search the iPad forum for "updating library". There is one page of results for the last 90 days.

OS 3.1.2 Update didn't fix the "updating library, please wait a few minutes
I was hoping that the software update would fix the "Updating library, please wait a few minutes" screen that comes up when I try to play a song on my ipod touch after syncing. Is this bizarre "updating library" delay going to be a permanent feature of the ipod touch now? Could someone from Apple please clarify if you are trying to fix this, or is this just the way it is now?
If you (Apple) aren't going fix it, I hope you make it known in your marketing for the ipod touch that you can't listen to your songs immediately. If you don't disclose this, I sure hope the Zune touch people make a big deal out of it when promoting their mp3 player. I woudn't have bought an ipod touch if I had known I had to wait 2-10 minutes to listen to a song.I suspect there's something else going on here... I'm having terrible trouble syncing films, and even tho they are clearly there, they don't seem to load in the list... I noticed that especially if I had dropped my network connection - the list would disappear (and this is on multiple touches)... It then starts to look very like my issues on Apple TV, where if it cannot verify the film back throught the network to the store, it deletes the content from your box... I suspect that each time it loads on the touch, it's doing some kind of 'legitimacy' verify, and that's what's causing the problem.... If I crash the sync just before the end, the re-index seems to work okay, but there is still that slight delay....

Any ideas how to get my software updated on my IPOD 3rd Generation when my computer times out? I have tried several times and it appears to take 30 plus hours. How Frustrating, not to mention the kids are too!
If the iTunes purchases are not in your iTunes library you can redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If you restore from backup, not that synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup and thus if those items are not in the iTunes library they can't be restored to the iPod during the latter part of the restore process. -
HT1349 can't check updates for my ipod via itunes

i suspect the windows firewall is the problem. So i shut it down, but still can't connet to the server.

Thanks(iTunes) iOS based apps (for iPhones, iPads, and the iPod touch) can be updated directly from the device.
Tap the App Store icon then tap Updates at the bottom of the display.
For your Mac...
- Temporarily disable anti virus software if installed.
- Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can prevent apps from downloading including Mountain Lion.
Quit the App Store if it's open.
Now open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy/paste: ~/LIbrary/Caches/com.apple.appstore
Click Go then move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.appstore folder to the Trash.
Type or copy/paste: ~/Library/Cookies
Click Go then move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Type or copy/paste: ~/Library/Preferences
Click Go then move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Try updating the My Alarm Clock app. -
I had to reinstall Itunes and my library and ipods did not reinstall how do i get these back?

You can do one of two things, first is to locate the songs on your computer by looking in the iTunes Folder. Once found then drag and drop them on top of iTunes to import them in. The second option is to revert back to a previous version of your iTunes library to get the data back before you installed. The articles below will assist with those steps.

Tried updating my daughters iPod touch and it just turned off. It now has a picture of a white lead and says iTunes. I don't have a computer to connect it to and just want it back to normal as it will not do anything. Can anyone help me?
You need to
Connect the iPod to a computer with iTunes and an internet connection and restore via iTunes

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

I don't really need to have my music on two places: iTunes Library and iPod. iPod should be enough. But a lot of services and views are available in Library. So what if I put my entire Library to my iPod? It works! But in that case the music consumes twice more place, because it's held in two places. I tried to use hard links (HFS formatted iPod), it seems to be working, but really hard to find the files.
Do you know some solution for this problem? Or some method to make much more simply the hardlinking? (In fact when iTunes copies the music to iPod, it should be an ln instead of cp.)If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos" (this setting isn't available for an iPod shuffle, you can't delete from iTunes and keep the songs on the shuffle). The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different, you can get details here:

One major word of caution. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads. Alternatively back them up to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
Don't delete anything until you have changed the update option. If by any chance you do however you can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
