Updating LR1 to LR3 - is it worth it on a 4 year old iMac?!

Hi,
Please can anyone offer some advice.
I currently have Lightroom 1.4. I have a 4 year old iMac (2.16 Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo) running OSX 10.4.11 with 1 gb ram. Everything still runs quickly touch wood (apart from LR which can be a little sluggish when dealing with lots of images).
With Photoshop I've always tried to upgrade every other version and intended to do the same with LR.
However, in order to upgrade to LR3, I would also need to boost my memory to 2gb and update to Leopard or Snow Leopard.
It would become quite an expensive upgrade which I'd accept if I thought it would be worth it.
My fear is that loading more memory intensive programmes onto an older Apple will ultimately just slow my machine down. I tried this some years ago on my first iMac, updating to Panther and adding more memory. But it slowed my machine down to a crawl.
I wonder whether I'd be better just opting for an old upgrade copy of LR2 and stick with what I have.

Hi Butch,
Thank you very much for your help. Strong case you put forward!
Just wondering, if your iMac is about the same age, have you noticed any slowing down at all since updating everything? Do you find LR3 with Snow Leopard runs quicker on your iMac than LR1 did with 10.4?
Thanks again.
Best wishes.
I find it runs quicker and more responsive for most tasks ... but LR3 adds some new features that that use more computing power, while it isn't what I would consider slow, it didn't increase speed dramatically though it is very stable and consistent ... I've had no crashes or problems and LR3 runs as well as LR2.6 did for me.
I should also note that my catalog is on the startup drive, my image files are on external FW800 drives. I think this helps keep things flowi smoothly. I also try to keep the use of too many other apps to a minimum when I am working a high volume shoot in LR, like a large event or wedding ... this keeps as many resources available to LR as possible.
On the other hand, PSCS5 64 bit on 10.6 flies compared to PSCS3 on 10.4.

  • Just updated from 10.6.8 to 10.9, now my 3 year old Macbook is slow.

I just downloaded the new Mavericks 10.9 OS X (after 13 hours) and now my Macbook (purchased brand new in 2010) is super slow.  I'm having delayed click-to-open responses and load time is ridculous.  iMovie is THE WORST!!  It took me 2 hours to put together a 2 minute video.
    What I've tried:
    Restarting
    Updating EVERYTHING
    Getting rid of apps I don't use/need
    Resetting the PRAM
Downloaded and ran 'Clean Memory', which did not help
Ran Activiy Monitor (Kernal Task uses the most, wich flucuates from 2.4-19.6, but everything else flucuates from 0.0-4.2)
What I don't understand is that all the research (for the last 3 hours) I've done, says that I must not have anough memory/storage.  But this is not the case, considering I have 249.2 used and 115.1 free.
I'm at my wits end and I want this fixed.  My life is on the computer and I need it.  Please, any suggestions would be helpful.

Remove Clean Memory from your Mac. It's not necesary and may be causing part of the problem.

  • I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I haven't used it in years, but I would like to start. What are my options for getting it up to date? Is it even worth the trouble/cost? I was hoping to at least get it running Snow leopard, if not Lion. Options?

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.

Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:
    Leopard system requirements:

But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon.

I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased Airport Express last year.  I used my iphone 4s to connect and it has been working until recently I lost connection after one of the iphone updates.  I cannot make contact with the unit.  I have even used an ethernet cable that I hooked to my router and still won't work.  I cantinually get this message from Airport Utility.  An error has occurred and I can not do anything else.

If you have the AirPort Express setup in Bridge Mode, try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address"
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    Update
You will probably get a message about a Double NAT error. Click to "ignore"
This setting might allow mutliple devices to connect and may not. It's worth a try...I have about a 60-70% success rate at hotels with this setting.
Unfortunately, as you note....hotels have become a lot smarter about connections to their network. At some point, they probably will not even allow another router to connect at all.

  • I just updated my iPad2 to ios7 and everything returned except my movies. Why??? I was trying to ADD a movie for my 5 year old and it said I needed a later iOS. Now he has ZERO movies!!!! Just great!!

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • Another old iMac requires upgrade/update

    Dear all.
After a year of waiting BT have finally got me on broadband in very rural West Wales!
I own three Macs none of them new. A G4 dedicated to sound recording, An Emac for general web use and graphics. And an 'old' iMac; a charcoal grey' Limited edition with 13 gig HD!! It uses OS 9 .0.3
I need advise Re the iMac. I have two Kids and would like to bring it back into service as a slow web browser etc.
The CD reader no longer works; I may replace it if everything else can be made to work.
I have managed to get iMac on line via BT HomeHub using original 'Explorer'. I can just about get to google search page but most web pages come up as gobbledygook - unreadable characters. (is this a resolvable conflict?)
Therefore I have so far been unable to download any updates.
I guess I need to install OS X? or OS 10.3 ?? But given that I can't download as is, and cant reinstall using original disk, is there another way?
Can I link iMac to eMac via ethernet and get OS X? that way? What else could I/might I have to do to make iMac worth bothering with. I am on very low budget at present so any big expense is out of the question.
I would greatly appreciate any helpful advise. Please use simple, one step at a time, terms since I am semi-technophobe.
    Many Thanks Chris 'Bubbapix'

As it happens, I've been dealing with very much the same sort of thing with a Bondi Blue. I can post some links for you if you want to pursue the firmware update and installation of Panther.
I was able to install Panther on the Bondi, and it will run Safari and connect to the internet. However, it has quit twice while trying to connect to You Tube, so I suspect that version of Safari has limits.
Configuring Apple Mail has been a challenge, especially with GMail. It's something I'm still trying to get worked out, but I don't know if it will be possible, as I believe that Google will stop supporting this version of Safari soon. AOL seems to work OK so far.
The Bondi is very slow, almost like dial up. Not sure if your kids would really like it. Yours might be faster, especially if you maxed out the RAM, but I suspect it would still be painfully slow.
If there is any way to sell the iMac for enough to buy something a little more modern, maybe with at least a G4 processor and running at least Tiger, that might be the better course of action if you can swing it.
Shop around for Panther and Tiger and other Macs, and see what you can come up with. Not sure what you could get for the iMac, but if you can get some OS X discs for it, it can be made to be somewhat useable.
When updating the OS on the Bondi before I got it on line, I downloaded the update onto my iBook G4 and then copied it onto a flash drive. I then plugged the flash drive into the Bondi and copied the update onto the desktop and installed it. You might try this to get the OS 9 update if you haven't been able to do it any other way.
    Good luck!

  • 5 year old deleted text messages automatically reload on startup after iOS update

I have a 5 year old first generation iPhone which was running iOS 1 until I updated to iOS 3.1.3 yesterday. Instead of restoring from a back-up, i restored to factory settings as a new phone. When the phone started, it received 35 new text messages - but they were old messages from 2007 which I had deleted years ago. I deleted thm again, but the next time I turned the phone off, they redelivered again when the phone turned back on.
    How can I stop this?

    char208,
I had the EXACT same issue as you. No text messages after upgrading to iOS 5 and coming across a bunch of errors during the process of upgrading.
If you go to your Spotlight search (the search screen that is to the left of your home screen), and you search for a word that would of been in one of your most recent text messages, the text message will appear in the search results. If you try to tap on the message, it'll bring you to the Messages application but it will not show the text message. It almost seems like the text message is still on the phone, but the Messages application does not know where they are or will not show it. Hopefully Apple will release a fix for this as I'm not wanting to lose 3 years worth of text messages.

  • I have two ipads with the same apple id but my 3 year old uses one of them, how do i update hers witht he apps she can use instead of everything that is on min as well?

I have two ipads using the same apple id.  My 3 year old uses one to play learning games.  How do I set them up so my apps arent displayed on her ipad?

When you connect that iPad to iTUnes, go to the summary page and scroll down, there should be a box saying 'automatically update' or something to that effect. De select that.
With automatically update on, what you buy on one goes onto the other. but with that box off you can choose.
On the iPad itself, it's under
    Settings
    iTUnes and App Stores
and then you can choose what you want automatically updated between the two devices.

You an use your iPhone without connecting it to a computer.
But the product description for the iPhone clearly states that in order to sync with a Mac you must have OSX 10.6.8 or later. That version of the OSX is usually called Snow Leopard. There are two mo recent versions of OSX. OSX 10.7.x (Lion) and OSX 10.8.x (Mountain Lion).
If you can upgrade your computer to at least Snow Leopard I suggest you do so.

  • Worth replacing a hard drive on a 3 year old computer?

I'm using a Powerbook G4 12" with 1.33 GHZ and the original hardware, purchased it back in Fall '03. The past couple of days, it has started to act up - about 60% of the time, it wouldn't even turn on properly, failing to even reach the Apple startup screen. If I did succeed in reaching my desktop, applications would take forever to open or simple stall. Anyhow, I ran disk utility off the install disk and found a minor problem in the volume bitmap, which was promptly fixed. The stalling persisted. So I ran Apple Hardware Test and was given the 2STF/8/3: ata-100 ata-6 mass storage error code. I don't know what that means exactly but gauging from some of the other posts, it looks to be predicting the imminent failure of my hard drive. I'm going to try and take it into the Genius Bar tomorrow but am not hoping for much.
At any rate, the crux of my question is this: if it is my hard drive preparing itself for the great beyond, is it worth buying a replacement hard drive for my 3-year old computer? Or should I just buy a new cheap Macbook? I'm on a student budget at the moment, so I'm trying to figure out which makes the most long-term sense. Last thing I want to do is fork out for a new hard drive only to have something else breakdown. I haven't upgraded my current computer much - I added an airport card and just bought a new battery but that's it.
Any thoughts? Apologies for the long-winded post.

Welcome to Apple Discussions, robtas and johndavi.
From the description it seems most likely that the internal hard drive is failing. Judging by your model of PowerBook, I would not be surprised if the drive is a Toshiba. If so, then you may also hear unusual noises from the drive.
The normal thing to do is backup/retrieve your data (if necessary or feasible) and then replace the drive. A hard drive replacement is not necessarily that expensive. Potentially you might be able to source a suitable drive online from $60 upwards and have that fitted for, maybe, $50. If you are comfortable working with a computer's innards then online structions are available here.
As for whether you should just buy a MacBook... personally I think, for now, you should just replace the drive unless you have other urgent needs that a MacBook can serve. The MBs may also have teething problems that need sorting out. Replacing the drive will be far cheaper than buying a MB.

My now dead laptop was running Firefox 3.6. It died. Now I have my old iMac out of storage. It has Firefox 2.0.0.1 on it. I'm using it now. Check for updates says I can go as high as 2.0.0.20. I'd like to upgrade the iMac to the most current operating system it can work with (right now it's at OSX 10.2.8), and then get Firefox up to the most current version this can run.
