Updating Mac Book from OS X 10.6.8

Model Name:    MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:    MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:    2.26 GHz
  Number Of Processors:    1
  Total Number Of Cores:    2
  L2 Cache:    3 MB
  Memory:    2 GB
I need to update to Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks to operate Quicken. Which one do I choose for my computer and how/where do I get it? (I'm hopelessly un-techy and the kind folks on here always seem to help!!)

Click here and buy Lion, or here for Mountain Lion, or download Yosemite from the Mac App Store as desired; unless you downloaded the full Mavericks installer before Yosemite came out, you can't get it. Regardless of which one you choose, you should install more RAM in the computer, back up your data, and check your applications for compatibility before proceeding.

  • Updated mac book from 10.4 to 10.6, downloaded updates, now just have blank screen

Updated Mac Book (intel) from 10.4 to 10.6.3 using Mac Box set.  This worked.  Downloaded software updates from "software update", installation failed, restarted computer and now have only the 1st white screen with the wheel going round - cant do anything!

You could try some basic troubleshooting, and if that doesn't work, you could always do a complete uninstall / reinstall.
For basic troubleshooting, try throwing out *all* GB preference files from the preference folder. Also, I'd try tossing any GB files in the cache folder. Then, rebuild disk permissions using disk utility.

  • I bought a used Mac Book from the widow of a neighbor who had died.  We don't know the password.  How can we get in to set up wireless printing??

I bought a used Mac Book from the widow of a neighbor who had died.  I am trying to set up wireless printing for a new HP printer and it asks for the Administrators password.  Is there any way to break through this and create a new password?

Is the Macbook running? If yes, go to Apple Menu About This Mac to find out the version of Mac OS X you are running.
If the computer is not working, do you know the model, or the version of the operating system on the MB?
You can track down some information with the serial number. Here's how to find the serial number:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1366
With the serial number you can identify the model on this site:

When we know the model it will be much easier to answer your questions.

  • I bought battery charger for my mac book from the different store, and i want to verify that is genuine product or not?

i brought battery charger for my mac book from the deferent store, and before i plug it to my mac book i want to verify that is genuine product. how do i get to know that?

It should have an Apple part number at the bottom of the charger and an embossed Apple logo on the face of the adapter.
Anyone can stamp a logo on the side, of course, so I would take a good luck at the part number and do an Internet search for the part number, making sure that it's genuine Apple.
    Good luck,

  • How to restore new mac book from time machine

i curentley have a mac book and am planing on upgrading to a pro but i have to sell this one first. can i restore my new mac pro using the time machine backup from this mac book or is there another way i have to do this being as i wont have both laptops at the same time??
    thanks for any help..

If you can recover the old machine (may not be worth the cost), then you could deactivate directly. A lot depends on what crashed, the HD, mother board, or other. On a PC, the hard drive can sometimes be recovered with SpinRite as long as the crash was not fatal. There are other tricks too, but all of them depend on the crash conditions and what the problem is. If the hard drive is actually good, maybe you could just put it in another machine and run the deactivation. Of course, not everyone has a bunch of machines on hand to play with. For PCs, I often head to the department surplus pile and see if I can find something to work with (not my stock). If I find a working machine there, then I just swap it out. Of course, that is for work machines. For a home machine, I might do it for testing or repair and then put things back after the repair.

  • Tried to update Mac book pro to maverick now system will not boot

I downloaded the maverick update but something happened during the update and now my Mac book pro will not boot into the os.  What should I do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't accurately update Address Book from LinkedIn vCard

    Hi everybody,
Unlike when I used Outlook for Windows, I have had trouble updating Address Book with LinkedIn vCards.  If a contact leaves one company for another and I try to update his information, the new company name and title end up being put into the notes field in Address Book. I asked LinkedIn this and got the following reply:
Thanks for reaching out to us - Sorry to hear that importing your contacts isn't working.
Unfortunately, this feature works best with Windows products, like Outlook and was not designed for use with Apple products.
I find this unacceptable and would love any suggestions as to a plugin or extension to make this work.
    Thanks!
    Doug

I'm not sure if this will help.
I have saved some sheets in csv format from Excel, but it seems that the import function from the address book doesn't accept the csv extension.
Saving the data in a txt file did solve the issue.
Make sure that your file extension is .txt and that the data is tab of semicolon delimited.

  • We have a Mac Book from 2007 System Version:     Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)   Kernel Version:     Darwin 8.11.1

We have a mac book purchased in 2007 System Version:          Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167) Kernel Version:          Darwin 8.11.1
Which OS X version should we or can we upgrade to?

A retail 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $200 since they haven't been made for over 4 years so they're getting pretty rare.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for third party programs compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
I recently upgraded an older MacBook (Early 2006 model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
Once you are at 10.6.8 if you want to upgrade further Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
    The model 2,1 (Mid 2007) can use 3gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 3,1 (Late 2007) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

  • Yosemite update, MAC Book Pro early 2008 - Dead like. Overheated, Blank screen

Before 3 days I installed the latest updated for Yosemite. After the update, I make the laptop “sleep”. But I noticed that while sleeping the power LED indicator behaved in a strange way. Also the laptop was very hot and after couple of hours of sleep, It count be powered on.
I pull out the battery and power cable to cool id down. After that is was OK.
This same scenario was repeating last 2 day, always while the laptop was off/in-sleep.
Now no the 3th day, I noticed the battery is drain out. Now it is fully recharged, but the Laptop want to power on.
After powering on, the Led indicator is glowing like (half-intensity) and noting happens. The screen is blank.
Can someone advise me, what to do?
    Some notes:
    ================
-The device is MAC Book Pro early 2008
-The battery is New, used for about 3 weeks, without problems
-I tried and alternative (old, original) battery, but it is the same. Which makes me think the problem isn`t in battery.
-It happened right after the Yosemite update.
-While sleep it was very hot
    -LED indicator behaves strange
Thank you for any advice or tip.

Sorry for the spelling I am dyslex.....
    I had this happen to.
For some unknown resin my 2.5Ghz MacBook Pro overheated and witch killed it.  Requires a new Logic Board.
    Resions for this diagnoses:
    1) The laptop was running  Sarfia in Yosemite before before I closed the lid.
    2) I did not take note that when I had put the laptop down it had not gone to sleep.
    3) When after 3 hours shopping, I picked the laptop up it was VERY! hot on the bottom (much hotter than it has ever been) (and it was not the battery)
    4) Before I got it turned off by pressing the power button the fans where running but not fast.
    5) I let it cool down before trying to turn it back on.
    6) I tried all the reset operations
    7) The disk drives (HDD and Optical) spin up and did the diags.
    What I don't know is:
    1) Why did not the thearmail shutdown not kick in?
    2) Why when I picked it up and it was clearly VERY HOT! the fans where not running fast?
    3) If the OS was doing something (update while asleep)?
    4) If the OS was doing something how and why did it stop the fans spinning fast to keep the laptop cool.
Sadley I now have to shell out for a new Logic Board.

I installed a update on my Mac book pro, now when I try to start it, it'll come up with the apple logo and a loading bar below it, gets to about 1/4th and shuts down every time.
