Updating macbook pro (pro's vs con's)

My macbook pro is 10.5 and I'm finding many things just don't work for sharing with my iMac 10.9.4.....the range between the two is just horrible.  I don't want to sell my laptop and wanted to know what is the best way of going about updating it.  I'm not sure that it will be even with my iMac but want something that is much closer.  What do you all think?

The earliest MacBook Pro model should have no issue with an upgrade to
at least Snow Leopard 10.6.8, then it could be used to look into further
upgrades that involve new systems from the Mac App Store online...
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
A retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD is still available online or perhaps in an
official Apple Store, these cost about $20. to buy, then once installed, the
next step would be to run Software Update in the booted new system to
get the Combo update for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 v.1.1 from Apple servers.
And then, after that's installed & running the computer see what else the
in-system Software Updates will show.
•How to identify MacBook Pro models
Of course, if the computer is still running the original hard disk drive and
also has not seen a RAM upgrade to more capacity memory chip totals,
these two items can help an aging Mac work more like new. A replacement
hard disk drive can be of greater storage capacity, as more internal space
is always better than running low; and the RAM memory helps the OS X
run better and give it resources to function while also running applications.
You'd have to better identify the computer model and build identifier you have
so as to closely match any upgrades of hardware and software, for exact fit.
So, it can be done. A few reputable sources for hardware upgrade include
macsales.com (aka OWC) and you can find the parts based on exact Mac
product information. The need to get correct exact RAM is essential, btw.
Good luck & happy computing!

About the only thing you can try is using the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion on your Mac over the top of the current install. that will reset all system files and should not touch your personal files or the apps you have installed.
Or iof you have a recent Time Machine backup use that to restore your Mac to that point in time.

  • How to update MacBook Pro system10.6.8 to 10.7.5

I Need to update MacBook Pro 1.1 Intel Core Duo, Memory 2 GB, speed 2 GHZ 667  MHZ Boot Ram Version.  I would like to use Turbo Tax but it apparently does not support 10.6.8.  And the printer also supports only from10.7.5 x-10.8x,10.9. I have copied all my Microsoft doc from Version 2004.  I appreciate any help you can give me.

Sorry, but your model cannot run Lion or later. A Mac Pro 1,1 can run Lion. Maybe that's what you have confused with your MacBook Pro. Your's is an obsolete model with a Core Duo processor. Running any version of OS X requires a Core 2 Duo processor. See these following requirements.
    Upgrading to Lion
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
          1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • After 10.7.4 update macbook pro won't sleep

after 10.7.4 update, macbook pro won't sleep.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be applied

When trying to update my new Macbook Pro with Retina through Apple's software update application, I get the error:
The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be applied
The update could not be expanded, and may have been corrupted during downloading.
I've already went through the process twice to download this update.

Same type of error, but getting 90% downloaded and error message that the update cannot be saved. But it then goes to the screen to apply, but with 90% only - no instructions that it will only download 90% and the rest will come during the update - not going to apply.

Did you restart your computer after repairing permissions?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
    Your system info says:
    MacBook Pro
Yet, in your postings you say:  "MacBook" which is an entirely different computer.  Typo?  Are you in the correct community area?

  • HT1338 Not able to update Final Cut Pro X to latest version.

Macbook Pro 15" 2.6gHz, Retina display notebook:
When I try to update Final Cut Pro X (version 10.0.1) from within the software, the dialogue returns that all software is up to date.  I know for a fact that FCP X is now at version 10.0.5.  Spotlight is enabled for all system and software.  How do I updage my FCP X??  Help.  Thank you.

Thank you for your reply.  I followed your suggestion:  Checked once more in the App Store for the Update to Final Cut Pro 10.0.4 and did NOT find it.  So, I deleted FCP X version 10.0.0 to the trash bin.  I emptied the Trash Bin.  Now when I go to the App Store, the only option I can find is to purchase a new application.  There is no where to simply download the application in the App Store that I can find.   I hope I have not been led to delete my working application and can not retrieve an update!!
What do you further suggest at this juncture?  Thank you.

    Ok....
Now go to your router's settings.  Not sure who makes your router...
Look at wireless part of it and see how many computers are actually hooked up to it.
Delete your computer from it (in your router).
    Restart your router.
After your router has restarted, try to connect to it with your MB and see if you can browse the net.
