Updating metatags keywords

Hello everyone.
I recently bought a Microsoft Vista laptop. I find that the Windows Photo Gallery is an excellent way to organize all my photos.
The problem is that I have put meta keywords on several photos via Windows Photo Gallery. How do I update this info to Adobe Lightroom? Is there not an easy way to update this info in the Lightroom software?
/Jimmy

Lightroom is not a multi-user application, and so you can, via tedious manipulation of files, achieve the result you want, but I should also note that make one mistake, and you potentially have a real mess on your hands.
The best solution (in my opinion) is to put the catalog file and all photos on a server that you can both access. The drawback to doing this is that only one person can be working with a specific Lightroom catalog at a time. And given my usual advice to use only one catalog, this may not meet your needs.
If that's not a good solution, then the intern can create her own temporary catalog of the portion of the photos to be worked on today, add keywords and other metadata, and then pass the catalog file to you to merge with your main catalog using the command File->Import from another catalog.
As another alternative, if the only task the intern will carry out is adding keywords and other metadata, there are many freeware solutions that your intern can use for this, and then when she is done in a particular folder, you can in Lightroom select all the photos in that folder, and then read the metadata from the photo files. For Windows, two such freeware programs are GeoSetter and ExifToolGUI.

  • Wondering where metatags/keywords are kept

    Hi there,
Wondering if anyone knows if metatags/keywords are kept somewhere outside of Bridge/CS4 (somewhere on my computer...?). If so, where please?
    Thanks!

Again, it depends on what metadata/tags you want to read. Keywords are entered on the file so even Windows Exporter can read them (called tags).  With Vista you can even search for them.
If you want the ISO,  metering pattern, lens length, whether the flash went off, camera serial number, or whatever, that may have a different answer.
Whether of not another program can read Bridge metadata and keywords I don't know.
This may be a round-about answer, but as with most things there are a lot of variables that influence the answer.

  • After update:  Error-Keyword assistant:unknown version of iphoto???

Hi, just updated new version through software update. After launching app, I now get this error. Keyword Assistant: unkown version of iphoto. "Keyword Assistant is untested against this version of iPhoto. Certain features are now disabled, just in case. Please check the website for updates." What's up with this? Anyone else get this, and what does it mean?
    Thanks
    M

I'm using KA and don't get that message. My version is 1.9.3 (49). I used to get that message and remember having an option to ignore it. It still works even though the message comes up.
Here's the requirements for KA from the website:
Keyword Assistant requires iPhoto 4 – 6.0.5 and Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later. It runs natively on Intel- and PowerPC-based computers.
There's another keyword helper application, Keyword Manager, that displays keywords in a hierarchical layout and operates in a separate window. You can find it at VersionTracker.com.
    Do you Twango?

  • Updating/sharing keywords and metadata in Lightroom 4

I will be using an intern to help add keywords & metadata to an extremely large group of photos in Lightroom 4.
The intern will have their own workstation so we'll be passing files back and forth.
I need to add their work to mine, keeping all of the keyword/metadata work tied to the virtual photos which already have some work done to them (some keywords, metatdata and photo enhancements already in place on some photos).
    step-by-step appreciated
What is the best way to do this?
    I'm still learning LR myself.
    suggestions welcomed!
    thank you

  • If I make minor keyword updates in Bridge, how do I update an existing catalog to catch the changes?

Is there a way to update the LR3 keyword hierarchies in existing LR catalogs for minor changes done in Bridge?
I have started to use LR for the first time.  I have about 50K photos that are key worded from within Bridge in maybe a hundred sub dirs.  The hierarchies seem to work somewhat differently in Bridge than in Lightroom catalogs & don't seem to handshake with each other. Apparently I should have originally turned on the keyword hierarchies in preferences in the Bridge when I originally set the keywords. I have hundreds of keywords without hierarchies. Now I want to correct the (missing delimiters) hierarchies in LR3 (using the most efficient method).
(The hierarchies do not show up on Bridge filters, so I saw no reason to use them originally, when I had fewer keywords).  Correcting the hierarchy in LR seems to not go back and correct the Bridge hierarchies.  So if there is a way to get the keyword hierarchy to update back from LR to Bridge, that would be the easiest way to fix the hierarchies, but I don't see how to do it.  Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    ron...

It will depend on if you saved the metadata from LR to the file or not. If not and you update the keywords in bridge, you will loose one or the other your choice.
If you saved the metadata, then its a simple matter of just reading the metadata into LR or syncing that file.
If you plan on editing metadata in bridge from time to time, then you need to get in the habit of saving the metadata (ctrl-s in windows) from LR or turn on autosave.

  • Updating the photo count for multiple locations of the same keyword

Is it possible to use a keyword on a photo but have it update other copies of the same keyword in lightroom 2.4? I would like to have linked keywords if this is possible.
To help understand this better, here is a rough example or what I would like to do.
I want a generic list of players which in its entirety will contain thousands of names. Then I also want to break those players down into their respective teams/leagues that they played on. This will make the list of players easier to manage when I only have to deal with one team at a time. I also want to seperate by seasons but that is too much for this example. So in my example I have a player who has played in both the AHL and NHL (Daniel Briere).
Now when I am going through my Flyers photos, I want to keyword a Briere photo. So I drag over the NHL/Philadelphia Flyers/Briere, Daniel keyword. So this gives that keyword a count of 1. I also would like the Briere keyword under Players get updated with a 1. Right now, it won't. How can I link those two? Also, when I go into my Phantoms photos, I see another picture of Briere, I would want to drag over the Teams/AHL/Philadelphia Phantoms/ Briere, Daniel keyword. This would in return update that keyword with a count of 1 and update the Players/Briere, Daniel keyword with a 2 since I now have a single NHL and a single AHL photo of him. Of course I need this behavior to be hierarchial. So if I have a photo of Briere in street clothes, I would want to use the Players/Briere, Daniel keyword. This would then give me a count of 3 but it won't updated the values in NHL and AHL keywords since the Players keyword is in a higher/different location.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks,
    Bob
P.S. If I made this too confusing, please let me know and I'll try to explain better.
example of what my keyword list would look like:
    Players
        Briere, Daniel
    Teams
        NHL
            Philadelphia Flyers
                Briere, Daniel
        AHL
            Philadelphia Phantoms
                Briere, Daniel

You cannot link keywords as you want. Each of those keywords is independent - they just share the same text.
You can create smart collections which group all occurrences of that name. This is obviously duplication, so you would do it only when you need.
I suggest you don't try to get too clever with using your keyword hierarchy to represent teams. Instead, use one keyword per individual person, a separate one for each team. You could have a top level keyword teams, and another for people, but don't structure things as you suggest as it leads to confusion about people. When you need to look at one team, use a smart collection that looks for images with Team X, Shot in year Y - the Library Filter  will then break the items down by keyword.

  • How to update keywords globally in Muse?

Is there a way to update the keywords and have them apply to every page at once? If there is I haven't hit upon it.
    Thanks!

Thanks so much for your advice. I had already entered the keywords through page properties. Should I remove those from the individual pages before implementing your directions?
In the code you listed: <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1,keyword2,keyword3,keyword4"/>
please don't laugh but by "keyword1, keyword 2" do you just mean that I enter my specific keywords? Was not sure if "keyword1" etc.is part of the needed code.

Curt - thanks for your time and suggestions!

  • Lightroom LR4 - very slow Keyword set updating

Lightroom LR4 - very slow Keyword set updating   1] keyword an image with some keywords from a keyword set. Those keywiords are highlighted in keyword set  2] select next image  3] wait about 4 to 5 seconds for highlighted keywords to be non highlighted. ARRGHHH  the problem with this, is that yo ucannot use the keyword set to apply these keywords to the newly selected image until they are not highlighted any more.  yet another area where lightroom is Slooooooooooow!!

Hi John, Did you solve the problem of slow update times associated with entering a keyword tag? I too am having this problem. During my most recent keyword entry it took 45 sec to add "Arizona, Hacienda Del Desierto, Lucy's Warbler, Spring " into the "Keyword Tags" box. During this time the box indicates "working...". The time to update has been getting progressively longer.
    I have LR4 4.4 and I'm running on a 3.1 GHz IMac OS X 10.8.4, 16 GB RAM.

  • How can I update a catalog on my laptop and then transfer the updates to master catalog on desktop?

This is similar to Goeffbubbles question but I don't want to have the original files on both laptop and desktop
    Here is the question:
I want to make a copy of a Lightroom 3 catalog to put on my laptop so while on the move I can be geo-tagging and keywording to 8000 photographs. I don't want to drag an external drive with me. I just want to be able to work on the catalog metadata and have all the updates/changes stored there (on the laptop)(in the catalog) and then transfer the catalog back to the desktop (to the primary archive) and have all the updates/changes pushed back into the DNG's or the XMP sidecar files alongside the CR2's. These changes would be only keywording and possibly writing GPS data into them….NOT image edits (that would probally require access to the original image files)
As a test, I tried "exporting as catalog", TWO images (with the source images "unavailable"). I flash-drived the resulting catalog to my laptop. I opened the catalog in LR3 and made changes to the metadata. I tried both "saving metadata to file" and "updating DNG previews" (which would be useless anyway since I could not write data back to the missing originals) and also tried doing nothing and just closing LR,  then pulling the flashdrive and plugging it into the DESKTOP.(knowing the changes are stored within the catalog itself only) I open the 2 picture catalog in LR and see the keyword updates. Hurrah!
I switch over to the master catalog. All I want to do is import the updated metadata (keywording, contrast, etc…) back into the master catalog and push the data into the original DNG or XMP. On import I select "replace: Metadata and develop settings only" (with or without "preserve old settings" checked) and click import. Voila! NOTHING HAPPENS and the updated keywords are NOT picked up.
Where did I go wrong? I know that the metadata updates were carried out because they showed up when I opened it separately in LR! For some reason they don't seem to making through the import process to the master catalog…
Sorry if I am being overly verbose....Any suggestions?

the part you're missing is that you have to be a little more destructive in your creation.
    here are my steps:
In LR, put the files you want to work on in a subfolder of your Primary catalog
Export Folder As Catalog with previews, but without including the DNG's
At your new location/machine work on that catalog.
Here's the part that's no fun, (obviously have a backup of your catalog before you do this)
In your primary catalog REMOVE that folder from your catalog. (this will remove all references within your catalog, but leave the RAW files alone where they were)
You then FILE-->IMPORT FROM ANOTHER CATALOG, and import your subfolder export back into your Primary catalog.
It'll bring all of your changes and previews back into your Primary catalog but with unlinked RAW files.
Click on the question mark in the corner of the thumbnail that's telling you it doesn't know where the source files are and LOCATE the original file again in your file structure, with the FIND NEARBY MISSING PHOTOS box checked.
Overly complicated for what it is, but it gets the job done.
I found your post because it was suggested on the sidebar after I just made a feature request on the same topic.

  • Advise appreciated for some keywording issues

I've been working on the road for a while and have several catalogues set up. The main one on my desktop iMac has many of the hierarchies set up correctly
    iMac
    jockeys
    fred
    kevin
    horses
    Desert Orchid
    Zenyetta
    etc
but I made the mistake on my laptop of not setting the hierarchies up correctly
    on the laptop
    kevin
    fred
    Bert
    Sam
    jockeys
    horses
    Desert Orchid
    Zenyetta
    etc
When I copied the laptop catalogue to my imac, I realised I have a problem
    Desert Orchid
    kevin
    fred
    Bert
    Sam
    jockeys fred
    horses
    Desert Orchid
    Zenyetta
    For example,
As Fred was already in the original catalogue and in the correct hierarchy, he's now appeared twice, as does Zenyetta, and others many others.....
I now have about 120 horses scattered across the "root" and the correctly keyword folder / category what ever and a few less of the mess of the jockey.
It is simple (hmmm) to select all the images tagged Fred in the root keyword, and then select them all and tag them with the
    jockeys fred
    keyword and then remove the
    fred
from the root, thus correctly updating the keyword, however, its very cumbersome and so far I've wiped all the keywords from the images of 2 jockeys from my correctly keyworded keyword collection (UNGH) due to getting confused over what I was doing.....
Is there a more simple way to select and drag around keywords into new hierarchies reducing the risk of more deletions of keywords from images?
I've commented on a keyword improvement thread (link) in the new forums for suggestions etc, but that does not help me at the moment.
Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

Hmmm.. Well, my suggestion proabably isn't the best, but...
First, fix the keyword structure on your laptop. Just drag the keywords around, you don't have to select/deslect the images.  Then re-do the import, but don't include negatives.  It *should* update the meta tags and update all your keywords to match what you want them to see without losing them all.
If that's not an option, then (if you don't know about this method) if you hover over the keywords in the panel to the right, you'll see a little arrow pop up on the right.  Click that arrow, and it will filter all of the images based on that keyword.   Then just scroll down to the correct keyword, and click on the box to the LEFT of the keyword (still on the right panel), and it will add that keyword to all those images.  Then scroll back up (if necessary!) and uncheck (by clicking on the check box) of the one you don't want.  Gone.  Then remove the old keyword from your listing.
    Cheers!

  • Function modules in Update task

    Hi Folks,
    What is the difference between
1.If a function module contains in attributes 'Update mode ' and run( without 'update task - keyword).
    2.call function ' fun2' in update task.
In this case, do we need to set the attributes must be 'Update task'?
    Please help me.
    Thanks in advance

    From F1 Help...
    <i>
This statement registers the update function module specified in update_function. update_function must be a character-type field, which during execution of the statement contains the name of an update function module in uppercase letters.
<b>An update function module is a function module, for which in the Function Builder the property update module is marked. The registration of an update function module is an essential part of the update task.</b>
The function module is not executed immediately, but is scheduled for execution in a special work process (update work process). For this purpose, the name of the function module including the passed actual parameters is stored as a log record in the database table VBLOG. If the statement is executed during the update task, the addition IN UPDATE TASK is ignored.

  • Permission to create keywords?

    Permission to create keywords?
Hi.  We're currently on 2006.0.6.  I'm trying to give a user access to create and manage keywords without giving them complete administrative access to RC.   I tried adding the user to the group "Manage and organize portal categories and keywords".  They can now browse and update existing keywords, but the option to create a new keyword isn't available for them.  Is there a way to let a user create new keywords without giving them complete admin access to RC?

    Tylor,
Yes - you can accomplish this in RC06 by also giving this person the "Change Site Parameters" site permission. This, along with the "Access ServiceDesigner" and "Manage and organize portal categories and keywords" site permissions will allow them to create keywords. Because you are not giving them access to ServiceCommunity, the "Change Site Parameters" site permission is limited only to actions taken with ServiceDesigner.

  • Synchronize Folder - Scan For Metadata Updates

Can anybody explain to me, what exactly is supposed to happen when I am synchronizing folders and have "Scan for metadata updates" checked?
What kind of metadata is searched
(I notice that keywords are not synchronized)
What action is supposed to be taken
(write metadata to image, read metadata into catalog, any prompt before updates?)
The manual isn't really specific about this, and by trying I haven't really found out what to expect.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Beat Gossweiler
    Switzerland

Basically, the folder is scanned for new or changed images. The metadata changes will include new or updated IPTC, Keywords, ratings, labels, develop adjustments, which will have been applied in an external app such as Bridge/Camera Raw. If the folder contains new images these will be identified as such. If an image has been removed from the folder but still remains in the catalog you will be notified and given the choice of removing it.
Synchronise Folder does NOT save anything back to the actual files. If you have made a change to a file in Lightroom that change will NOT be applied to the actual file when Sync Folder is run. It reads the folder for externally applied changes/additions/omissions and subject to user choice will update the catalog accordingly.

  • Deleting and updating records in a database table

    dear all ,
i have created a databse table to which i have to update and delete records thru my program whixh i am unable to do so plz help me.

    Hi Sonu,
To delete and update the records in your database table, you can create a Function Group and all the necessary function modules for it. This will a good approach as this will separate the database interface logic and the business logic. You need to use the DELETE and UPDATE ABAP keywords to delete and update the records of the database tables. Have a look at the ABAP Keyword documentation for a complete details of the usage.
Have a look at the following link:
