Updating MSP

I'll admit I'm a P6 guy, but I do a fair amount of work in MSP (2010 or 2013.) In P6, I usually deal with updates by asking my customer for an actual start date, then an expected finish date (not worried about resource accounting....) I NEVER use a customer's
estimate of Percent Complete -- it's complete rubbish in my opinion. (end rant...)
Anyway, MSP doesn't seem to have an "expected finish" construct. I can post the Actual Start, but what's the best way to post an expected finish? I'm happy to let MSP calculate Percent Complete, just don't know the technique. If the end date doesn't
change, I can handle that (there's a nice little button on the ribbon for that...) but if the end date is expected to change, what would I do, alter the duration? That's not very quick and easy.
Others?
Jim

Jim,
There is a Tracking Gantt View and a Tracking Table. The word "tracking" is the giveaway.
The Tracking Gantt View is much the same as the regular Gantt View, except that the formatting of the chart allows the baseline bars to appear alongside, or rather underneath, the schedule bars.
The Tracking Table has all of the columns/fields that are needed for, well, tracking of course.
When I track progress, I make sure I can see what I am doing before I start, so I have the Tracking Gantt View and the Tracking Table both visible. I also make sure I have a status date set and it is displayed on the chart as a vertical red line. Then it
is a matter of asking the right questions in the right order and putting the answers in the right place. The first fact that can be obtained is the actual start date, and I think that's why that column is the first one in the Tracking Table. You can type it
in, then the actual duration (also a fact). If you have the special circumstance of the actual start date being the same as the scheduled start date, and the act duration being the duration from the actual start up to the status date, you can skip the typing
and just hit the mark on track button.
While Dale suggests asking for a remaining duration, and others might suggest asking for a finish date, they both really amount to the same thing, and getting the people to estimate one or the other is much the same, one being no harder or easier to estimate.
I never ask anyone for a percentage of anything, whether it be the duration, work or cost, or the task itself (such as the percentage of how many bricks they have laid). A percentage is usually taken to be some sort of pseudo measurement which requires no
accuracy or precision. But actually it is a fraction with a numerator and a denominator, so I ask for the numerator and denominator.

  • Adobe Reader 9.1 Update "MSP"

    Hello everyone,
I have Adobe Reader 9.1 deployed to 550 PC via SMS and now I need to apply the patch AdbeRdrUpd911_all_incr.msp. How is the way to apply the MSP patch without unintalling 9.1.
This what I did with the MSP patch, I've injected the patch throught the MSI of 9.1 and I have custom MST. When you install Adobe 9.1 with the injected Patch on fresh machine that doesn't have Adobe Reader 9.1, it will install fine and will show in the Add Remove Program " Adobe Reader 9.1.1. If you have Adobe Reader 9.1 installed on the machine and push the Adobe Reader 9.1 with the injected patch "MSP" it will fail.
I can remove Adobe Reader 9.1 and then install Adobe Reader 9.1 with the MSP "Adobe Reader 9.1.1" which I'm not planning on doing this.
I just need a way to apply the MSP patch on the top of the existing Adober Reader 9.1 on the PCs.
    Any idea.
    THanks

You can silently push the patch file using the following command line.
    msiexec /update AdbeRdrUpd911_all_incr.msp /qn

  • Best Practice for Updating Administrative Installation Point for Reader 9.4.1 Security Update?

I deployed adobe reader 9.4 using an administrative installation point with group policy when it was released. This deployment included a transform file.  It's now time to update reader with the 9.4.1 security msp.
My question is, can I simply patch the existing AIP in place with the 9.4.1 security update and redeploy it, or do I need to create a brand new AIP and GPO?
Any help in answering this would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't update your AIP in place. I end up keeping multiple AIPs on hand. Each time a security update comes out I make a copy and apply the updates to that. One reason is this: when creating the AIPs, you need to apply the MSPs in the correct  order; you cannot simply apply a new MSP to the previous AIP.
Adobe's support patch order is documented here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/498/cpsid_49880.html.
That link covers Adode  Acrobat and Reader, versions 7.x through 9.x. A quarterly update MSP can  only be applied to the previous quarterly. Should Adobe Reader 9.4.2  come out tomorrow as a quarterly update, you will not be able to apply it to  the 9.4.1 AIP; you must apply it to the previous quarterly AIP - 9.4.0. At a minimum I keep the previous 2 or 3 quarterly AIPs around, as well as the MSPs to update them. The only time I delete my old AIPs is when I am 1000% certain they are not longer needed.
Also, when Adobe's developers author the MSPs they don't include the correct metadata entries for in place upgrades of AIPs - any AIP based on the original 9.4.0 MSI will not in-place upgrade any installtion that is based on the 9.4.0 MSI and AIP - you must uninstall Adobe Reader, then re-install. This deficiency affects all versions of Adobe Reader 7.x through 9.x. Oddly, Adobe Acrobat AIPs will correctly in-place upgrade.
Ultimately, the in-place upgrade issue and the patch order requirements are why I say to make a copy, then update and deploy the copy.
    As for creating the AIPs:
This is what my directory structure looks like for my Reader AIPs:
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.0
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.1
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.2
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.3
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.4
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.4.0
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.4.1
    The 9.4.0 -> 9.4.1 MSP is F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\AdbeRdrUpd941_all_incr.msp
When I created my 9.4.1 AIP, I entered these at a cmd.exe prompt - if you don't have robocopy on your machine you can get it from the Server 2003 Resouce Kit:
    F:
    cd \Applications\Adobe\Reader\
    robocopy /s /e 9.4.0 9.4.1
    cd 9.4.1
    rename AdbeRdr940_en_US.msi AdbeRdr941_en_US.msi
    msiexec /a AdbeRdr941_en_US.msi /update F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\AdbeRdrUpd941_all_incr.msp /qb

  • Trying to Update Acrobat 8 on Off-Line Machine

I have a computer with Acrobat 8 Pro installed, this computer does not have an internet connection and due to the environment can NEVER be connected to the internet.  I am trying to install the updates for this product, which I have downloaded and double clicked on.  When doing so I found the file extensions for these updates (.MSP) were associated with another program 'Pain Shop Pro' as a Microsoft Paint file.  I have disassociated this file extension, but need to associate it with some type of installer or other executable that will presumably run the update process within/for Acrobat.  When pointing it to the two I found within the Adobe Program Files structure, it doesn't work; when I associate this extension with a Windows Installer in the System32 directory the file appears to begin to launch, but apparently needs some command line options specified to know what to do.  My impression is that when the on-line installer/updater runs within Acrobat, it takes care of a lot of this behind the scenes.  The directions for the install files in the download section for this product appear to indicate you should just be able to double click on them and they'll install without issue (without any additional comment).
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any help on this.

As suggested, you have to download all of the updates after the version you are using and install them in order. They are not cummulative.

  • Acrobat reader 10.0.x for windows and flash player update

i don't understand why my client require the update of reader (update of 10.0.1), but in the download page (.msp file) i can't find nothing. the other problem was about the update of flash player....i need to distribute the update over GPO, but adobe doesn't release from download page....is because the update are integrated in acrobat reader new release?
the metod is wrong! security is very important and release the updated version of software is also foundamental! IT Pro need an update (.msp or .msi) for the reader and for player.....faster not when you want
so....how you think to resolve this problem? how i can resolve my problem about the update?

Here you'll find the msi and msp files for the Acrobat Reader ("reader" folder on ftp) and Acrobat Pro ("acrobat" folder on ftp). ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/ . Save the link to your bookmarks.
For updating/installing Flash Player you'll have to go over here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html
There's a distribution license needed to deploy the flash player (don't ask my why the hell you'll have to get a license to deploy it in internal environments, although you can download and install it without the license).
Best of luck, i needed a hole day to preparing deployment of cs5.5 and flash player etc. because of lack of information or consistency at the adobe pages and different methods for diffrent products. There should be a way to charge adobe the time it needs to get started, because they earn a damn lot of money with their cs products so they should provide better methods to do these tasks... but thats an endless story, because they're a monopolistic global player i think they aren't really interested in the needs of customers. There's not a real alternative, especially in education you're bound to use it, so you're gonna buy it anyway...

  • 9.4.1 update - unable to use with bootstrap installer?

    Dear all,
I've just tried using the 9.4.1 update (msp) in the PATCH= section of the 9.4.0 exe bootstrapper and it keeps trying to install 9.4.0 to an existing 9.4.0 client.
Any ideas why this is happening?
My setup.ini has the following :
    [Product]
    msi=AcroRead.msi
    PATCH=AdbeRdrUpd941_all_incr.msp
But it almost looks like the version check is broken and it doesn't install the patch. However, on a fresh client (with no Adobe Reader), the same setup.exe does indeed insatll 9.4.1.
    Many thanks in advance,
    J10000

First of all I would like to correct your problem statement. 9.4.1 update is infact working with bootstrap installer.
Had it not been working it wouldn't have installed the Reader 9.4.1 on a clean machine .
Why it is not applying 9.4.1 on an existing 9.4 installation?
Right Click the setup.exe you are using and check properties. In the 'Description' you will see - 'Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation'.
This is the small bootstraper which can not handle the complex logic of checking the product state on machine and then applying the patch depending upon the product state.
Small bootstraper is meant to handle the following cases only :
    1. On a clean machine - Installs the latest version (9.4.1 in this case)
    2. On a machine with older Reader major versions like 8.x.x installed - Removes the old and installs the latest
    3. On a machine with same Reader major versions like 9.4.x installed- Offers Repair/Remove Dialog. Keeps the machine at same Product version as it was before running the patch if Repair is chosen.
For upgrading from same Reader major versions (Like upgrading from 9.4.0 to 9.4.1) big bootstraper is required which is needed for chaining the different patches. In past Adobe has released chained readers (for reader 9.3.3 and 9.3.4) where big bootstrapers were used. Also big bootstrapers are not easy
to use so usually not adviced to end users.
So if you have a machine with Reader 9.4.0 already installed then simply apply the 9.4.1 patch.
You may use the following command for silent mode installation-
    msiexec /p AdbeRdrUpd941_all_incr.msp /qn

  • Installing MS Office Updates using SCCM 2012 patch management.

    Hi,
We have SCCM 2012 in our customer environment, we would like to deploy MS office 2012 non-security updates using SCCM patch management. Can someone help me how to configure non-security updates on SCCM 2012 and deploy the same.
    Regardsm
    Madhan

The process of deploying non-security updates and security updates are the same.
    As a side note:
To reduce the numbers of required updates, you can also download service packs, and other updates (msp files) and copy them to the update folder of your Office installation source. Then they will be installed as part of the Office deployment process.

I've seen reports that networked based users cannot use Reader under Windows. The same may be true on a Mac. For some uses, Preview will work, for others I don't know. You could try to install Reader into the local applications directory as opposed the regular applications directory and see if that works.

At a point before is I had the same log as techhit1 in the second troubleshooting link, Which seems that the ARM updater needed to be updated from 1.7.0 to 1.7.4.. but didn't want to go any further without first getting the LUAPatching set to enabled..
I feel even if i manage to get it set to enable I'll still be having the same issues as techhit1, and will still be stuck on implementing this, and instead have to just add the updated msp files to my deployed GPO.
But how do I get this LUAPatching set to enabled???!!?

Any thoughts? I was able to write a batch script that silently install the 11.0.03 msp file so that user are updated with prompting a UAC, however i don't want to have to write a new script everytime adobe comes out with an update, I'm sure future updates will installs like the orignal guide states it should once I get the UACPacthing enabled.
Since the script installed the latest reader update it also updated ARM to 1.7.4 which should make future auto updates work fine unless theres another update for the updater... uhhh

  • Need help with Adobe Reader 11.0.0.8 and Group Policy Objects

I am trying to deploy Adobe Reader 11.0.0.8 using Adobe Reader.
I am using the AcroRead.msi I found in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Setup Files\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AB0000000001}
    HOWEVER
Instead of installing 11.0.0.8 it installs 11.0.0.0
I have not had anyone complain about it asking for an update. But I'm sure it's only a matter of time. (I know about the customization which could prevent the updates, but I can't figure out how to get the correct version installed is the issue not the updates).
So if I run the Setup.exe it ends up installing 11.0.0.8 but AcroRead.msi I think only installs 11.0.0.0
Obviously you can't give a GPO an .exe so it's a closed loop. You can't use an .exe to install the proper version. And you can't install the proper version because you can't use an .exe
You can only use the .msi which apparently only does 11.0.0.0
I've been trying this that, have done jumping jacks and back flips trying to fix this (tried different versions, different approaches to this, nothing seems to work)
Need some help. THIS IS WAYYYYYYY WAYYYYYYYYYYY Overcomplicated btw, shouldn't be this complicated for something so mundane.

A couple of approaches and all involve a bit of work.
    Three steps:
Do the install of the 11.0.0 MSI at the command line
Then follow it with the 11.0.07 Updater MSP at the command line
Finally the 11.0.08 Security Patch MSP at the command line.
    AIP
Create the AIP from the three files above then then run the MSI from the command line.

  • Convert PDF Chrome extension does not appear/install (Acrobat XI)

When I installed Acrobat XI, the Chrome extension to convert webpages to PDF does not install or appear in Chrome. I tried repair installation from Help menu of Acrobat, it still did not resolve the question. The extension also does not appear on the extension list, in case you're wondering its deactivated.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers

I think there might be some confusion about what you are asking since I think that the Adobe Acrobat Create PDF extension is only available for Adobe Acrobat Pro XI (11) and I don't think that you will find it in the version 10 directory (although I could be mistaken since I do not have version 10).  One you update to the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro XI (11), and also apply the latest updates to Google Chrome, then the extension should be enabled.  I am running Google Chrome version 33 and have Adobe Acrobat Pro version 11.0.6.70 and the extension works alright for converting basic webpages.  The Adobe installation directory that contains a copy of the extension depends on your operating system and installation and whether or not you have a 64-bit machine.  For example I am running Windows 7 64-bit and I was able to find a copy of the "WCChromeExtn.crx" extension file in the directory:  "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\Acrobat\Browser\WCChromeExtn"
On the other hand if you are asking how to install the "WCChromeExtn.crx" Adobe Acrobat Create PDF extension without updating Adobe Acrobat Pro, that is a much more advanced procedure.  If you have Windows 7 typically certain file types and locations that will not be indexed so you may not find what you are looking for with Windows search.  That is why someone suggested using a third party search indexer to find the extension file.  Another person suggested extracting the file from the Adobe update, and I also think that is the way to go.  However the method that was described previously is very complicated and uses a lot of unnecessary scripting for what you really need.  I propose that you download the latest update directly from Adobe and then extract the extension from the update file.  Here's how to do that in Windows:
    1. Download the latest update file from Adobe (e.g. "AcrobatUpd11006.msp")
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows
    2. If you are interested in some background on Windows Installer files, check out these links and read about MSP files and extracting resources, otherwise go to the next step:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/basics.html#installer-file-ty pes
    http://www.jsware.net/jsware/msicode.php5
    3. Rename the incremental update MSP file extension to CAB (e.g. from "AcrobatUpd11006.msp" to "AcrobatUpd11006.cab")
    4. Use an archive utility such as WinRAR, WinZip, or 7-Zip to open the CAB file and extract the "WCChromeExtn.crx" CRX extension file
    5. Drag and drop the extension CRX file onto open Google Chrome window extension page to install and configure (chrome://extensions/)
There are some other forum topics and a blog post that deals with some installation issues with the Google Chrome extension:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1332770

    http://blogs.adobe.com/acrobat/tip-google-chrome-the-adobe-acrobat-create-pdf-extension/
    http://blogs.adobe.com/acrobat/tag/chrome/
I hope that this might help you with getting the extension installed.
I currently am having some issues with the Adobe Acrobat Create PDF extension for Google Chrome when I try to convert secure https webpages, the output of the PDF converter does not retain my logon information, and does not convert the secure webpage.  The resulting output of the converted https webpage is either a logon screen or a blank pdf with only the URL listed at the bottom.  I hope that this might get fixed with an update or if anyone else might know of a workaround or solution.  Thanks.

  • Links from Excel to Project

So I am trying to link an existing excel worksheet to MS Project.  The desired functionality would be for users to keep updating information in excel, which would update MSP.
    Problems are,
-I cant seem to get the mapping wizard to select the cells I want to link.
-Can i make it so that the MSP automatically updates with information as it is updated in excel?
-Am I completely wasting my time here, is it better spent throwing excel out and starting fresh with project (including trainng users)

    Matt --
I would challenge you why your schedulers need to type the updates into Excel instead of just typing the updates directly into the Microsoft Project schedule.  If you absolutely need to follow the path of entering the updates into an Excel workbook,
Microsoft Project has an Import Wizard that allows a user to update a project using data from an Excel workbook.  Keep in mind that the process of importing the data from Excel to Microsoft Project is MANUAL and not automatic.
I have personally used the Import Wizard to import updates from Excel to Microsoft Project, but with mixed results, some good and some bad.  It is not a process I would personally recommend because it seems to behave inconsistently.  If you have
your schedulers type the updates in the Microsoft Project schedule directly, you will not see the inconsistent behavior I have seen with the Import Wizard.  Just a thought.  Hope this helps.

  • Staff: Why is there no offline installer for 10.1.5? The patch doesn't work for me.

Hi, I'm trying to update Adobe Reader 10.1.4 on a 32-bit Windows XP SP3 computer to Adobe Reader 10.1.5. The Adobe Reader Updater downloaded the update but it tells me:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"
    It's looking for AdbeRdr1010_en_US.msi in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\ARM\Reader_10.0.1\ but it can't find it.
Normally in a situation like this I could just download the offline installer, and as an enterprise user I want to do that anyway. Yet it appears there's no offline installers in ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.5/ like for example AdbeRdr1015_en_US.exe or AdbeRdr1015_en_US.msi. On Adobe's pages for both enterprise and home users it only offers 10.1.4 as the older version prior to 11, not 10.1.5 as one would expect.
What's going on with this? Am I the only one who's noticed either of these things? I suppose on that one computer I'll have to download AdbeRdr1010_en_US.msi and place it in that directory where the patch is looking for it.
    Thanks for any help

    Howdy,
I'm not sure what you mean by an offline installer, but the available updates, the admin guide, and the release notes are all correct. 10.1.5 is an update (MSP). It is not a full installer. As stated in the doc, full installers are not always provided. Also, full installers or updates don't have any online dependency.
You can install 10.1.5 over that last relevant msi/exe. That's 10.1.4 for some languages but usually 10.1.
Alternatively, you can get a non-enterprise installer from the Reader Download Center. You can probably expand the exe to get to an MSI. That's an atypical route most enterprise admins have not found a need to travel.
10.1.6 will also only be an MSP update.

  • Correctly done AIP needed for reader 10.0.1

I just can't seem to get this.  Couldn't get for 9.4.2 either.
    msiexec /a acroread.msi /p adobetier1update.msp
I click next and next and then it's done.
It says 10.0.1 in add remove programs, but the install is still 10.0.0.  The C:\program files\adobe\reader 10.0\reader\acrod32.exe is still 10.0 and not the updated one.
If I install 10.0.0 and then run the update everything is good.  I have also tried
    msiexec /a adobereader.msi /update update.msp
    Why won't it work?

For creation of Reader X (10.0.1) AIP you need to have Reader X AIP first. You can follow the below steps to create Reader X 10.0.1 AIP
Steps to create Reader X AIP
    =====================
    1. Create a source folder containing Reader X installer.(Either locally or on a secure network share)
    2. Create a distribution point which is accessible by users who want to deploy the application.(At this distribution point installer will install uncompressed program files).
    3. Click Start, Run and type cmd and press enter.
    4. Run command => msiexec /a "Source Path to Reader MSI"
    5. On the network location dialog (where to install files) browse to distribution point created in step 2
    6. click ok
Steps to add patch 10.0.1 to Reader X AIP
    ===============================
    1. Create a source folder containing Reader X patch file.(Either locally or on a secure network share)
    2. Click Start, Run and type cmd and press enter.
    3. Run command => msiexec /a " full path to the administrative installation point and installer
file that you created in the previous procedure at distribution point" /p "full path to Reader patch file"
    4. After completion of applying patch you can install using MSI created newly at distribution point and it will install Reader X 10.0.1
