Updating my graphics card

Hi all
I'm looking at getting a new graphics card for my mac (G4 quicksilver 2002, 800mhz,1.25gb ram) but am not really sure what to go for.
My current profile is this which I copied from the system profiler:-
Type: display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-1
VRAM (Total): 32 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x5157
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-91701-222
I presume it's an ATI card with 32mb of video ram.
I would like to put an Nvidia card in this time as I've heard there can be trouble with the ATI cards if the driver's not right.
I'd like to spend around £100 on a card ( if possible).
I run programs such as photoshop, illustrator, freehand and quark as well as a few web programs. But no heavy game playing or video editing.
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated

Hi Neil
As far as I'm aware Nvidia cards aren't available in retail versions so unless you can find one on eBay ATI may be a better choice.
I have the same computer as you, recently replaced the stock Radeon 7500 with a Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition and have been happy with it. The other choices were a Radeon 9000 or 9800, but the former has been discontinued and lacks Core Image support where as the latter was perhaps overkill as I'm not a gamer (and it also requires an internal power connection, generates a fair amount of heat and has a fan that can be noisy).
If you're looking to spend £100, the most important consideration may be whether you'll need an adapter. For example, if you buy a 9600 or 9800 and need to use a ADC monitor, you'd have to buy a DVI to ADC adapter which costs £70 by itself. If you do have a ADC monitor, a Radeon 9000 may be the better choice. A brand new 128meg version went on eBay a couple of months a go for around £70.
I hope this helps.

    Hi @DP21 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a wonderful place to find answers and ideas!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I see from your post that you are unable to run Windows Movie Maker 2012 as you receive an error that your graphic card only  support  Direct X 9.
You can run the HP Support Assistant  to look for updates.
I am unsure if this is your exact model or not but here is the  link to the driver page  HP Beats Special Edition 15z-p000 CTO Notebook PC Drivers
As this is a CTO model I can not pull up your exact build information.  If you would private message me with your serial number I will try to obtain your exact specifications.  Do not post it in the public forum as it is private information and would be in violation of the rules.
Have you done all your Windows updates as Direct X is a microsoft program.
    I hope this helps

  • Updating Macbook Graphics Card Drivers

i have tried playing warcraft 3 using the macbook as it is. and it is pretty crappy. i think if the drivers were updated it would run more smoothly.
i was wondering if its possible to upgrade them?
i know its an integrated chipset and w/e but is there anything more i can do as far as software upgrading?
Mac OS X (10.4.7)   13" Macbook 30 Gig Video iPod

for now the updater for graphic card should be in the 10.4.7 or 10.4.8 updater.
Go to blizzard sites and download patch and updater for wIII (ver 1.20?), it might help too.
    Good Luck.

  • Updating iMac graphics card.

I've never updated my graphics card and I think its about time I did so. Does anyone know how I can go about this? I tried updating through "about this mac" but that doesnt update anything. If somone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Also if somone could tell me how I can find out what my graphics card is I need to know that.

A graphics card is a piece of hardware. Usually the drivers for that hardware are never updated, not explicitly anyway.
The card type can be found under  About this Mac > More Info > Hardware; Graphics.
MacPros have removable cards that are potentially upgradable but with iMacs they are fixed and cannot be changed.

  • Can I update my graphics card?

NOTE: By updating my graphics card, I do not mean getting a new one - I mean installing a some software to put my graphics card up to date.
Hey all. I need to now if I can update my card, cause if not, I can't play a certain game. Would love some help on this - Thanks!

Install a RAM upgrade, other than that no.

  • FPS drop in the game Counter strike after updating my graphics card.

Hi, i just updated my graphic card drivers and after that the fps on a game i like to play dropped to about 5. Before it was 70-100.
Its just unplayable and i cant figure out what it is, it has to do with the update.
I tried another game and it floats the same way as before.
The pc is a HP-Pavilion and the mode name is VN278AA-UUW m9860sc.
The graphics card im using is ATI radeon HD 4650.
Any idea what it may be?

    Hi TIMOWN,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I am sorry to hear the your FPS has dropped so low after updating your Graphics card. I will try my best to help you with this. I suspect that you had a bad update and would suggest rolling back the driver to the previous version.
The steps to rolling back a driver are in this document for Device Manager Information for Windows 8.
I hope this helps, please let me know how it goes.
Good luck and have a great day!

  • Can't update AMD graphics card drivers in Macbook Pro 15" 2011

I've been having this problem for a while now, and from what I understand, it's a fairly common issue with bootcamp but I have not been able to find a solution to the problem nonetheless. I am using a 15" Macbook Pro from 2011 (purchased in early September, not sure if that was before the 'late 2011' model or not), running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 through bootcamp v4.0. The graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 6750m last updated on 6/13/2011 to version 8.812.0.0.
I have tried many times to update the card using the AMD catalyst control center supposedly made for windows 7 in bootcamp, but no matter what compatibility options I choose, the installer either tells me there is no graphics adapter (auto detect) or just crashes immediately after starting installation of the catalyst control center. I've also attempted reinstalling bootcamp several times, each with a fresh download of the windows support software, though I have not completely uninstalled Windows 7. I'm not sure if the problem is with the bootcamp drivers themselves or with AMD's software or a combination of both, and a solution would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I know this is completely the wrong spot for this, but while I'm here, does anybody else have issues running EA's Origin download service? I just installed it in bootcamp a few days ago to play Mass Effect 3, and ever since then my computer gets display lag (e.g. in windows media player the video freezes for a few seconds at a time, while the sound continues playing) sometimes, especially during and after attempting to play Mass Effect 3. I already checked to make sure that both Origin and Mass Effect 3 are fully up to date, so I thought it might have something to do with the graphics card.
Anyway, thanks for the assistance, and I apologize for asking a question that has probably been answered several times. I searched through several posts, I couldn't find any answers to my problem.

Despite all of these helpful posts from the community, I'm still coming up short. I'm attempting to update my ATI Radeon HD 6770m driver on windows 7 64-bit. I've followed this guide:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3866652?start=0&tstart=0
(third post down) - I also use Drive Sweeper after using CCCleaner and device manager uninstall.
Every time I attempt to install the driver after rebooting, I receive an error message stating "Driver install: the INF file was not found" with a log stating that the driver failed to install upon completion.
When I attempt to use control panel>Device Manager>Display Adapters>Update Driver Software>Browse My Computer For Driver Software and then choose the appropriate file path (including subfolders) or by choosing from a list of device drivers and selecting one of the two inf files in c:/amd/support/12-2_mobility../packages/drivers/display/w76a_inf, I receive the following error message:
"Windows Encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
    AMD Radeon HD 6700m Series
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."
I'm hitting nothing but dead ends here. I just want to play SWTOR with an updated driver!
Please provide a detailed, step-by-step solution (if you have one). It is not safe to assume that I have any experience regarding graphics drivers or running windows in bootcamp. Thanks in advance.

I tried it using AMD autodetect and download and install.it too shows same error.
Kindely someone help me to download latest versions.
    And install correctly.

    Hello Adarsh_Johny,
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand you are looking for updated drivers for your notebook. Unfortunately, there are no Windows 8.1 drivers that HP supports, as indicated here: HP Pavilion g6-2005ax Notebook PC Drivers
My suggestion to you is to return the computer to Windows 7 or 8 to take full advantage of the updated drivers. Of course, you can try to install the latest Windows 8 drivers, but I can't guarantee that will work.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

  • Updating laptop graphics card

I am looking into updating my laptop and probable the graphics card and wondered how much it would cost.  I have a HP G62 Notebook PC, with 3.00 GB RAM.  With graphics card Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family.  I am wanting to play World of Warcraft and it is not working smooth at all, what is a good solution to update and how much will it cost?

With that chipset, set your ground clutter to low, (and everything else, but especially that), but you should be able to bring your view distance up to medium.
That should give you smooth gameplay. Oh, and go into Windowed mode, on some systems that seems to help.
Plus: You may try going to MSCONFIG (Start, and type in MSCONFIG), going into the startup tab and disabling everything unneeded, just in case it's a background program issue.

  • Update my graphics card (?)

I'm running a G5 quad (PowerPC not Intel) with a NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT graphics card (256MG VRAM) and I'm having problems with viewing my animations in real time (even rendered and trying to view the QT files). Since we are now starting to render files in HD quality, can someone tell me if there a better graphics card I should install?
    Thanks!

AFAIK, you've got the mega king of GFx cards for a G5. Nothing faster. You might look into an x1900 Mac version, but it's also 256MB I believe...

  • Updating the Graphics Card...

    I have a new iMac 20-inch 2.4Ghz.
It comes with an ATI RadeonHD 2600. Is there any possible way to upgrade/replace it? Even if it meant taking it into a local apple store to get technical support. People say that the 24-inch is somehow upgradable, but why not the 20-inch?
    Thanks, Ryan Mckenzie

Unfortunately not really. I don't think there are any after-market graphics cards for the Mac Pro yet.... only the choice of three when you buy.
Hopefully some will come on the market sooner or later.

    Hi @AhmedZizo
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having trouble after trying to update your video driver for the AMD Radeon 7670M. I am happy to assist you with this. Firstly can you verify the full product number for your notebook, for some reason I did not see that version on the list when I looked for it. Also the operating system in use would be helpful. Please read the following documents if you need help in finding those.

Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Once I have that I can find the correct driver page for you.
You can check out this page as an FYI.

Another choice would be to try to either reload your old drivers from the recovery partition, or try a system restore in the hopes that  may be all that is necessary. If you  use the System Recovery option just be sure you are only choosing to reload drivers. A full recovery would reimage your hard drive. Just in case you may wish to back up any data on your notebook first.

  • How do I update my graphics card driver for ATI HD2600?

I have this new driver that I can update namely a new bios version and a display one which is version 8.432 for my hd2600 (8.383 now).
But how exactly do I do this? Should I first uninstall my older ati driver or can i just install them over it?

Just overinstall the driver, it does not matter what version you have installed just execute the setup program and install the driver. Regarding the BIOS just do the same, but dont have any other applications running during the BIOS update.

  • HT4459 How do I update a graphics card?

    ATI Radeon HD4670
    OS 10.8.4

    You don't.
The graphics processing chip IS NOT a user upgradeable component and if you have a recent Mac ,2011 of newer with AppleCare or extended AppleCare, you will void the warranty plus void any future repairs and replacement work from Apple, if you even open the case to try an attempt this yourself.

    Hey @jdudleyjones ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the card reader for your notebook is no longer working after updating to Windows 8.1.
You're probably right that it's a driver issue, however just like you I don't know which card reader you're using either.
Can you please tell me which notebook you have? For information on finding your product and model numbers click here: How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
It would also help if you could tell me the Hardware ID for the card reader. Here's how you find it:
    Press Windows Key + X
    Click Device Manager
Click View at the top and select Show hidden devices.
You will most likely find the card reader listed under Other devices as an Unknown device.
Right click on it and select Properties.
    Select the Details tab.
Change the drop down menu to Hardware Ids.
Note down the first ID in the list (as you'll see they're all pretty much the same regarding the Ven_ and Dev_ numbers which is all I need).
Once you've provided this info I should be able to find the drivers for you.
Look forward to hearing back from you!
