Updating my ipod software on a different computer

My ipod touch is synced tyo my itunes on my laptop... my laptop no longer works.. i need to update my software on a different computer....how do i go about this without losing any music?

A manual backup will help in your situation.
Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your iPod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in iTunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
Apps can be downloaded again for free, in some countries music as well: Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • HT1329 Can I update my iPOD touch from a new computer?

I was wondering if it's possible to update my IPOD touch from a different computer, the one I was using crashed and now I can't update my ipod and it's difficult because I can't download current games.
Also, How do I download my music from my ipod to the new computer

Copy or move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer or the backup of the old computer to the new computer, then you can sync and update the device.
If for some silly reason you have failed to backup, shame on you.
That being said you should be able to do the following:
Connect the device to the computer but do not sync.
Right click on the device and select Transfer Purchases.
Once complete, right click on the device and select Backup Device.
Doing this should change the device association to the new computer allowing you to sync and update the device and apps.

  • HT1222 update ipod touch software on a different computer

My internet connection is slow. Can I upgrade my ipod touch on a different computer that I don't normally connect to?

Plug it in and sync it.  it will erase the current content and replace with content of the new computer.
You need to copy everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of the old computer, to the new one.

Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.

  • Updating iTunes & iPod software

I recently puchased some songs from the iTunes store, but did on a different computer to the one on which I keep my music. I then tried to import the songs into my iTunes directory and I was propmted to update iTunes to version 7 (7.0.1.8). Having done this, I could play the new music, but the songs had to be placed in a different directory i.e. it would not place them in the iTunes directory. Next I went to synchronise my iPod, and I was told to update my iPod software to version 3.1.1 which I did. When propmted I disconnected the iPod from my pc, connected to external power to allow the update to complete. Reconnecting my iPod to my pc, I was told that the new songs would not synchronise because I had to update my iPod software !!
So I disconnected my iPod once more, deleted the new songs from iTunes, made a few palylist changes, and reconnected my iPod. Very quickly I was told that iPod update was complete in iTunes, but my iPod is stilling flashing "Do Not Disconnect". Is this normal?

I am removing this question as I posted another which was more concise

ever since I updated my iPod software my iPod will not connect to the app store and won't let me download anything. help

Hook it up to your computer and open itunes. try to download hte apps via your computer. Every time you update hte software you have to reagree to the itunes terms of service. Sometimes it's hard to get it to come up on the device, but is easier on a computer.

  • When i try to update software for my 3rd Gen iPod Touch to version 5 i get the message 'This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version'. My Mac OS is 10.4.11. How can I update the iPod software?

When i try to update the software for my 3rd Gen iPod Touch to version 5 i get the message 'This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version'. My Mac OS is 10.4.11. How can I update the iPod software?

The later iOSs requires at least OSX 10.5.8 for the Mac.  You need iTunes 10.5 but 10.4.11 only goes to 9.x.. 10.5.8 is a paid upgrade.
Are you sure that you have a 3G iPod?  If it is 8 or 16 GB it is a 2G and those can only go to 4.2.1 (also requires 10.5.8 or later). A 32 GB can be either  2G or 3G. To identify yours:

  • Should I update my iPod Software

    Hi,
I live in the UK, but I bought my iPod from Hong Kong, so I could avoid the EU volume cap.

    No.
The volume cap is in hardware, not the downloadable firmware.

  • How to sync iPod Touch on a different computer

My piece of junk PC got another virus last night and is currently disabled. (I am on husband's Mac right now). So I'm trying to access my podcasts & all that on my husband's computer. We have "authorized" his computer. He also set me up with my own User account (so our iTunes songs, shows and videos STAY separate).
But "sync iPod" is grayed out for me now.
When I try manually dragging last night's Podcasts to my iPod, nothing happens.
When I try and do a checkbox that says "Sync iPod" it threatens to "replace my podcasts" with what I've selected (which I am afraid might mean that if I download last night's Anderson Cooper podcast, it could wipe out the other podcasts that I've put on my iPod and would like to keep). I am not sure this would happen, but I sure don't feel like taking a chance.
So does anyone else know what to do when you try and use your iPod touch on a different computer?
    thanks

OK, thanks. I heard that someplace else, too. This PC torture has got to end.
Time to go find a MacBook that I can afford. Or even a desktop Mac for that matter, though I really did want it to be a laptop....
    (sigh)
    Thanks for your help!

  • When I update my ipod software...

When I update my Ipod software, will it only delete music from my Ipod itself or also from my Itunes Library?

Either way, it would be a good idea to have your entire iTunes library backed up elsewhere in case something happens to your PC.
Best of luck with the update.
