Updating N70 - first-timer advice please

First off, I'd better say I've never attempted to update the firmware on any phone before. My T-Mobile Nokia N70's current firmware is – and I hope you're sitting down – v2.0537.1.7, which was out of date when I got the phone around a year ago.
I've downloaded the Nokia software updater and sorted out my phone's connection to the PC, so I'm pretty much ready to go, but just have a few questions - well, concerns really.
I know I need to back up my contacts to the PC and also save any pictures/files in the gallery, but I was wondering what else will be lost when I do it?
I don't mind losing any of the games that came pre-installed (don't know whether by Nokia or T-Mobile), but Adobe reader is useful to me. What programs etc will I lose, and what will stay after I upgrade?
What I'm probably most concerned about, however, is the connection settings. Once I have updated the firmware, will the phone retain the call and SMS/MMS connection settings, which I presume were set by T-Mobile, meaning I will be able to carry on without having to change anything, or will I have to sort them all out?
I guess it's just a case of first-time nerves, but any help or advice anyone can give me would be hugely appreciated.

Basically once you run the Software Updater tool and it upgrades your phone, it will revert to the condition that you got it when you first took it out of its box. So there will be no settings on the phone whatsoever, and any applications that you installed after you bought the phone will not be there anymore - applications that were on there when you bought it (e.g. calculator etc.) will be there.
If you have a memory card, I would recommend that you backup your phone contents to your memory card, and then restore them once the upgrade has been completed. From memory (no pun intended) I think on the N70 you can access the memory card by going to Tools->Memory card - then goto the Options menu and "Backup phone contents to memory card" or something similar. When I did this on my N70 and more recently on my N95 it also restored not only the SMS, MMS settings, but also the applications I had installed too. Once the upgrade process has been completed, you can then go back to the memory card and restore the backup to your phone.
I'm not trying to put the frighteners on you, but be aware that as with any firmware update for any device, there is always the possibility of "bricking" the device - i.e. the firmware upgrade process may go awry and you may be left with a non functioning phone.
Having said that, before Nokia disabled the ability to upgrade the firmware on a phone more than once, I ran the NSU on my N70 about 3 or 4 times and only had one problem - I've also recently upgraded my N95 and the process went flawlessly, however if you rely on your phone for business or emergency use then I would recommend that you make provisions to have another phone available in case it does go wrong.
Please ensure you are running the most recent copy of PC Suite and the NSU before going ahead with the upgrade.
The software updater can be found here : http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdater
The PC Suite program (to create and restore backups) can be found here : http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite
One final word of advice - don't be in a rush when you do the process - it doesn't take a long time (at the most 10 minutes), but if you are in a rush to do this then you may be tempted to disconnect the device before the upgrade has been done - this is a VERY VERY VERY bad thing to do and will definitely turn your phone into a brick - so don't !
During the process itself you may see the screen power up and say "Test mode" - this is fine - just let it carry through and the phone will eventually come back up. If there is a scenario where you've given it half an hour and there's been no joy (e.g. the screen is blank), then take the battery physically out of the phone for 5 minutes then put it back and power the phone back on. If it doesn't come back up then you will have to visit your nearest Nokia Service Centre.
I know I've probably painted quite a negative picture, but as I've said I've upgraded the firmware about 4/5 times successfully and had no problems whatsoever, but it's only fair I paint a balanced picture so you are aware of all the pros and cons of doing this.
Good luck and please let me know how you get on.
Regards,
Edward

  • JWS not downloading updated files first time

    We are experiencing a problem where JWS does not download the modified files when the application is launched the first time after the jar files were updated. When user launches it again, it gets the updates.
    This seems to happen mostly for users in remote locations (though not for all such users). For local users the frequency is much less.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Raman.

    If the application has the offline-allowed specified,
    javaws has a timeout mechinism when checking for updates before launching an app. (i believe it's 1+1/2 seconds). If javaws cannot determine before the timeout if an update is needed, (and offline-allowed is specified) it will run the cached version, and continue checking in the background.
    Then when you run next time, the background checking will by then have determined an update is avail, and you will have to download before launching.

  • Live Update 5: First-Timer Assistance Needed

    Please allow me to preface this by informing you all that I am a complete noob, where custom built computers are concerned. I likely won't understand some of the techy lingo, so please bare with me. Thank you in advance.
    I have a PC with a MSI 970A-G45 mainboard. The OS is Windows 7. There is a Live Update 5 icon on my desktop. Upon opening this LU5, it appears this program is used to ensure at least some of the hardware/software stays up to date. However, I am scared to death that I will click the wrong button, likely causing a disaster which I'm not capable of fixing.
    As you can see, I have taken a screenshot of the Live Update screen. I clicked the scan button, and these are the results. Because I use my own virus/spyware protection, I'm fairly certain I want no part of the Norton Internet Security. Other than that, I'm not sure what to do next, if anything.
    Should I download any of these results? If so, which ones? When doing this now and/or in the future, are there precautions I should take, or is it as simple and doing the average Windows update?
    Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide.

    do not do the MB BIOS as that is dangerous to do as Windows is a Unstable Environment and it has a 50/50 of Bricking it (rendering it inoperable) and I advise against that part all together!
    also do not use Norton Internet Security as the Virus scanner in it is prone to ultra heavy scanning and can slow down your computer alot!
    as for using it turn off MB BIOS, VGA BIOS and Other Utility! and the rest is ok to use! but If you have no problems with the computer and everything is working leave it all alone....
    as for BIOS its best to do it manually and if you do want to do that ask us first and we will walk you through it safely and as your a noob that's your best thing to do!
    does that make sense to you?
    I don't believe I am having any issues. I'm not noticing anything strange. I'm just accustom to keeping everything updated, so I wanted to make sure.
    Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • Want to but my first Nokia - advice please

    I would like to buy my first ever Nokia ,but I really need the following items on the phone ...
    1. EDGE
    2. an external antenna port ( not a cradle but a direct connection into the phone )
    3 camera
    Can some one please recommend a phone that has the above items please , especially the ability to connect an external antenna directly to the phone, any advice or comments would be most welcome
    Thanks

    Hi grschinon , The external antenna connection does sound a strange request I know , I am going to be in a remote part of
    Cambodia , and will need a mobile phone that has a direct external antenna connection option , Ive found several new model Motorola and Sony Ericsson phones that do have this built in option , But I really would like to buy a Nokia , I was just hoping that if other manufactures do have new model phones with the external antenna connection option, then Nokia may be would have the same ..?

  • N70 Radio Problem - Advice Please

    Help Please....
    I'm having a problem with the FM (or now called Visual) Radio on my new N70.
    When I'm listening to all channels (Radio 1 to GWR etc) the volume dips (not much but noticably) in both headphones and then pops back. I know it sounds odd but I can only aliken it to an old radio that used to switch from FM to FM 'stereo' (more depth in the background music/noise etc).
    I have spoken to my Network Provider Three who sent me a new headset but the same problem occurs.
    I have tried playing saved music and that works fine so the problem is solely with the Radio.
    Is it a possible fault with the phones radio application? If so will I need to get a completely new replacement phone?
    I am aware radio frequencies can vary in strength but I live and work in the centre of Bristol (BS1) and my other nokia (older model) works fine.
    Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Dean.

    Ahhh now you have burst my bubble !! im still gonna hope that the firmware cures mine. Did you try any of the suggestions like starting the camera while listening to see if that stops distortion/dropping ? (works for me)
    Not a end to the problem I know, but might give an insight to if the problem is software related.
    As for the nokia service centre? Well nokia support here deny any problems and refuse to help. (only took 8 days for an email reply) My nearest nokia centre is 100 miles away and will charge for an upgrade even thou the phone is only a month old.
    Luckily my vodafone store is abit closer (60 miles) and will upgrade at no charge although will have to be sent away for 2 weeks. Problem is there is no new firmware on vodafone yet so just waiting....... impatiently lol
    Keep an eye on the other link I gave you... Seems to be abit more active from peeps with the same problem across the globe.

  • New 4th Gen. iPod Nano 16GB. Plugged in for the first time. PLEASE READ!

    I got the new 4th generation for christmas and i plugged it in and something pops up about registering and i clicked later.
    and then it tells me that I have to Read and agree to the software.
    So I read through all of that and at the end, there is a box you can check to say that you have read and agreed. I did that, but then you have to click a button to confirm/continue im guessing. Well, my problem is, that my computer screen is too small for me to see the button, in other words, I cant confirm/continue and am stuck there, I cant do anything else with the ipod with out continuing this step. I have tried to Maxamize the screen and dragging over. nothing seems to work.
    Is there any other day to agree and confirm to this? If there isn't, is there a way that I can get to the confirm/continue button?
    I really need to use my iPod.
    I Have windows Xp.
    PLEASE REPLY.
    my iPod is important.
    I have tried changing my screen resolution.

    you have a Windows computer -- that's the problem.
    it would work just fine on a Mac.

  • Help with export speed - First time poster - please be gentle!!

    Hi all,
    Currently an i5 win 7 with 4gig ram (work PC!!!)
    Using Ppro 8.1.0 (81)
    As a company we have upgraded from CS6 to CC in the last month
    I have played around an everything is looks fine, but I have a 40 second video containing 4 After Effect comps fully rendered sitting on my Ppro timeline.  I go to export and choose h2.264 720p 25 as I would have done in CS6 and the estimated file size is 48meg, So I'm thinking that will be a quick render.
    At the moment the estimated time reads 2 hours and 7 mins and is climbing!!
    What am I doing wrong?  I usually export to this setting and a 4 min video on the same machine using CS6 used to take about 45 mins
    Thanks in advance, I have looked through the forums, but don't know much about the ins and outs of hardware acceleration or even know where to find it!!

  • Oracle 9i Trigger not updating first time through

    Hi,
    I have read a lot of postings but this one seems to be unique. I am trying to update using from Access to Oracle backend database with a Trigger. When I put the code from the update in a test window in the PL/SQL, I step through the code and it doesn't update the first time through. The values from my :old and :new fields are null the first time through. When I change either proj_part_ppv_adj, incorp_date or end_date in the test window and step through the code again, it updates my table.
    update statement:
    -- Created on 10/17/2005
    declare
    -- Local variables here
    i integer;
    begin
    -- Test statements here
    update pcrit.tpcrit_proj_part
    set proj_no = 'TestChris',
    mat = '1080373',
    plant = 'COR1',
    vndr_code = '0000000564',

    end if;
    end tpcrit_proj_part_trg_ubr;

    Are you lookng at tpcrit_proj_part to see if the update happend, or are you looking for the results of the after update trigger?
    I believe that this is exactly what you are doing, except I have left out the after update trigger.

    SQL> SELECT * FROM t;

    Trigger created.
    SQL> UPDATE t

      4  WHERE id = 1 and

    This is all your proceesing
    1 row updated.Now, all your processing happens on the first update, and all others:
    SQL> SELECT * FROM t;
            ID ID_DT       DESCR      DESC2
             1 09-NOV-2005 Descr      Desc2
    SQL> UPDATE t
      2  SET descr = 'CHANGED'
      3  WHERE id = 1 and
      4        id_dt = TRUNC(sysdate);
    This is all your proceesing
    1 row updated.But only when something changes:
    SQL> UPDATE t
      2  SET descr = 'CHANGED'
      3  WHERE id = 1 and

  • Urgent advice please on transferring pictures to Ipod

    I would like to download my pictures from my pc hard disc to Ipod, in order to delete them afterwards & create more space on my pc.
    2 problems in doing this: 1) when I synchronize the picture folders to copy them onto Ipod, I suspect Itunes copies them somewhere again on my C-drive, since my C-drive runs out of storage space. So: where are these files stored so I can delete my previous attempts?
    2) In order to solve the above mentioned problem, I tried transferring files one by one, but the 2nd time I transfer pictures to Ipod, it will delete the pictures downloaded the first time.
    Please help me, since my pc is running out of space and Ipod is not helping me to resolve the problem where I bought it for, in fact, it makes my problems worse!
    Thanks very much in advance!
    dell inspiron 8100   Windows XP

    Seems like your hard disk is close to completely full!
    1) To synchronise, iTunes has to optimise and prepare the files it transfers to your iPod and needs some space in your Temp directory while it prepares them, before it transfers them over. You can safely delete your Temp files as long as you have no installs in progress.
    2) What you say makes sense since you cannot manually add a file at a time to your photo library without deleting the old ones.
    What I would do is to go to iTunes>Edit>Preferences>Music Tab and enable "Manually manage songs and playlists". Also enable Disk Use by ticking the box next to it.
    Click OK
    Then open Windows Explorer through My Computer and you can copy the photos and any files you want to back up to a folder on your iPod disk drive. Check the folder and make sure everything you want is there. Then you can delete the files you do not want stored on your hard drive and create space.
    IMPORTANT:: You have thus backed-up the data on your iPod - but if you lose it or it breaks down, you will lose all your precious irrecoverable data, so a good bet is to buy another hard drive, internal or external and ASAP copy the data to that hard drive or onto CDs so that you have a back-up. Also, Pictures or music thus stored as a back up is not seen via the iPod interface - you can only access the data through Windows Explorer (or Mac Finder).
    Good luck!!!

  • ExecuteQuery WhereClause problem for first time in the session of the page

    I am new to OAF and I have panic problem.
    I have two pages application like following..
    First page “LookupTypes” and second page “LookupValues” for the selected first page Lookuptype.
    The problem is when I press first time(after lunching the page/first time for the session) the button in “LookupType” page I am getting all the “Lookup Values” for all the lookup types instead of getting only for one Lookuptype and I will press “back” button in “Lookup Values” Second page to come back “LookupType” first page, Again immediately I will press the same button which I pressed first time, this time I will get correct number of records for one Lookup Type. I don’t know why its where clause is not working first time.
    Please find the following code and help me.
    First page is LookupTypes->second page is Lookup Values
    Step 1 : I have button on “Lookup Types” page to call “Lookup values” page
    Step 2 : “Lookup Values” page control to receive the parameters from lookup type page.
    Step 3 : application module (AM) to execute the query..
    Code :
    Step 1 : I have button on “Lookup Types” page to call “Lookup values” page
    Following is the code from “Lookup Types” control.
    public void processFormRequest(OAPageContext pageContext, OAWebBean webBean)
    super.processFormRequest(pageContext, webBean);
    String paramLookupTypeAction = pageContext.getParameter(EVENT_PARAM) ;
    String paramLookupType = pageContext.getParameter("paramLookupType");
    OAApplicationModule PafLookupAM = pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    //Adding calling LookUp Values screen
    if (paramLookupTypeAction.equals("viewLookupValues") )
    // PafLookupAM.invokeMethod("clearLookupValueMethod");
    //Here we prepare the HashMap object, that cotains name of the parameter and the value of the parameters
    HashMap phm = new HashMap() ;
    phm.put("xxparamLookupType",paramLookupType);
    phm.put("xxparamLookupTypeAction",paramLookupTypeAction);
    pageContext.setForwardURL(
    "OA.jsp?page=/oracle/apps/xxpaf/pafLookups/webui/pafLookupValuesPG"
    , null //not needed as we are retaining menu context
    ,OAWebBeanConstants.KEEP_MENU_CONTEXT
    ,null //not needed as we are retaining menu context
    ,phm //pass the hashMap that contains values for all of the parameters
    ,true //retain AM
    ,OAWebBeanConstants.ADD_BREAD_CRUMB_NO
    ,OAWebBeanConstants.IGNORE_MESSAGES);
    Step 2 : Following is the code from “Lookup Values” page control to receive the parameters from lookup type page.
    public void processRequest(OAPageContext pageContext, OAWebBean webBean)
    super.processRequest(pageContext, webBean);
    String paramLookupTypeAction=pageContext.getParameter("xxparamLookupTypeAction");
    String paramLookupType=pageContext.getParameter("xxparamLookupType");
    OAApplicationModule PafLookupAM = pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    Serializable LookupTypeParamList[]= {paramLookupTypeAction,paramLookupType};

         //     page.setTitle("Lookup Type: " + paramLookupType);
    Step 3 : Following is the code from application module (AM) to execute the query..
    public void viewLookupValuesMethod( String pAction, String pLookupType)
    try
    OAViewObjectImpl pervo = getPafLookupValuesEOVO();
    String existingWhereClause = pervo.getWhereClause();
    pervo.setWhereClauseParams(null);
    pervo.setWhereClause("Lookup_Type = :1");
    pervo.setWhereClauseParam(0, new String (pLookupType));
    pervo.executeQuery();
    pervo.setWhereClauseParams(null);
    pervo.setWhereClause(existingWhereClause);
    catch(Exception exception1)
    throw OAException.wrapperException(exception1);
    Best Regards,
    Pathi TVB

    Pathi,
    Please try to have the WhereClause in the VO query as part of static definition itself. So you would only need to bind the parameter and execute the Query.
    Try and let me know if that helped.
    Thanks

    Is it mandatory to keep opening balance always 0 when we are posting manual bank reco first time?
    Please clarify.

    Moderator: Please, avoid asking basic questions

    Hi:
               It depends on the balance in the main bank account GL that will be assigned to your house bank against a particular ID in FI12. If it has nothing in it (can be seen in FS10N) then BRS will created with 0 as opening balance. Mostly in case of First time new bank statement it starts with ZERO balance.

    I have a Mac Book Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7; Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    I updated to iTunes 12.0.1.26 and I am trying to burn a playlist and I get the following message:  "Disc burner or software not found" .  I have burned lots of CD's and DVD's before and this is the first time I get this message and cannot burn anything.  Can anybody help me, please?

    Hello queenabs,
    It sounds like you are trying to burn a playlist to a disc in iTunes, but you are getting the error, "disc burner or software not found."  I found a couple of resources that I think might help with an error like this.
    I recommend starting with the steps in this article:
    iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install

  • Why do you continue to use a G4?

    This may seem like an odd question as I assume that the obvious answer is economics for some, the need to still use OS9 for others and the fact that older G4's are cheap and highly upgradeable/hackable. I bring this up because, I-like many on here, a
