Updating old iWeb site

Okay, so to make a long story very short, I had to reinstall the operating system on my iBook, and after doing so, iWeb no longer opens the site I made in it. Instead of opening the site, it acts as though I have never used the program before and asks me to create a new site. Is there any way to salvage my old iWeb site, or do I have to start over on it? (if it makes any difference, I don't have .Mac)
Thanks...

Hi Everyone,
I have exactly the same problem as Chad. However, I had exported my site to a folder and backed it up before I reinstalled.
I can't work out how to do it, but surely there is a way to re-import my site back into iWeb.
I've been trying the iWebSites program but that doesn't seem to be of any help in my situation.
I would find it hard to believe that Apple could have left out what should be the most basic feature of iWeb, leaving me to believe that they have done this on purpose for some stupid reason.
If anyone has a way to get around this please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Deleting old iweb site

i have an old iweb site from 2006 that i need to bring down yet do not have the original domain file. Google webmaster denied request to make it unsearchable.
any ideas on how to do this?

Where are you hosting the site? If it's MobileMe just mount your iDisk, go to the iDisk/Web/Sites folder and drag the site folder to the trash bin in the Dock.
If it's a 3rd party hosting service, can you access the server with an FTP client like Transmit or the free Cyberduck which lets you access your directory/folder in a Finder like window? If so then just select the site folder and drag it to the trash.
If you can't access the server to delete files create a new site with iWeb, one that has the same site name and only one blank page, and publish that to the server.

  • How do I get my old iweb sites into the new iweb 08 after upgrading?

I upgraded and now the new iweb 08 does not see all my old web site pages. How do Igetnthem into the new application?

I had a similar issure after buying a new iMac and trying to get my iweb sites onto the new computer. I called Apple tech support and they told me to copy the file "domain.site" form the user/library/application support/iweb folder from my old imac into the iweb folder located in the same directory on my new computer. Once it is copied to the new location, double click on the "domain.site" file and it should open in the new iweb program. They told me to check all the pages to make sure it works OK in the program. My problem is that the new iweb program crashed everytime I double click on the "domain" file. Hope this helps.

  • Restoring old iweb site from idisk

THrough sheer ignorance, I created a "new Site" in iweb, not realizing it would replace my exiting website, which is far more important. I want to restore my old site. I am able to access the old site through idisk, but have no idea how to relink it so that it reappears as my website. (Someone suggested opening the index.html in plain text editor and correcting the URL, but I have no idea how to do that. Tried opening it in "text Edit" and no URL is there)
Appreciate any help!!!! This is killing me!

TextEdit is what is says - it is an html editor so that you use it to edit html code, so not url will show up as it does in Safari etc. Safari is a browser and TextEdit does what it says on the tin - edits html code.
The easiest way is to go back into iWeb and open your domain file with the site on it and re-publish all of that site and it will be back at the top again. That is assuming that you have the relevant domain fiel and have not deleted it?
If you publish another site in iWeb, assuming that they have different names, they will not cancel each other out, but what will happen is that the second published site will be at the top, so all you need do is re-publish your original site from iWeb and it will be back at the top again.
You can always get to all your iWeb sites via the url http://web.me.com/username/sitename so Site1, Site2 etc.

  • Old iweb site into new iweb?

Recently had to redo my computer.  My iweb site is out there on mobile me and I downloaded the folder.  I can't figure out how to set it up so iweb will open this site so I can update it...

Unless you have the domain file that was used to create your site you will have to rebuild it from scratch.  iWeb can't read/import html file.  However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the creation of the new site.

  • How to import old iWeb sites

I recently did a clean install of Lion and setup a new User for myself, rather than migrate my old user data. I copied my Sites folder from my Snow Leopard User folder into my User folder in Lion, but when I open iWeb, I can't see any of my iWeb sites. How can I import the sites that I've already built in SL into iWeb running under Lion?

The website data is stored in a Domain.sites2 file whose default location is Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb. This is the file you need to transfer.
In Lion the Library is hidden and there is a slight problem with opening Domain files. See this page under "iWeb and Lion" for info...

  • Want to publish an old iWeb site - struggling!

Hi, hope someone can help me out.
Approx 5 years ago, I created a website for a mate in iWeb and published it using an old .Mac account. I've since changed Macs and while the website design remains, .Mac is now Mobile Me and my mate has lost the log in details. The account is still live as my mate had the Mobile Me annual fee deducted from their account only recently.
To make matters worse, we registered a domain name and pointed it to the .Mac created domain. However, my mate failed to renew the domain and so there's no way of us seeing the website.
Finally, the email address registered to the .Mac address is now also defunct.
We've now bought the same domain name back and want to publish the iWeb site to that domain, but with no Mobile Me details I'm wondering what the solution is. Any thoughts?
    Cheers in advance

You will have to recreate the web site from scratch since you don't have the domain file that was used by iWeb to create the site in the first place. Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.
As for the domain name once you have your site created and published you can forward it to the new site.  You can obtain an account on a 3rd party web hosting server like HostExcellence.com and publish you site there.
However, if you have a blog or one of the items listed below they will not be supported on a 3rd party server:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a Non-Mac Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    From iWeb 3's Help
Many 3rd party servers do support php which will allow you to protect pages or the entire site.  3rd party hit counters which offer much more than just the number of visitors can be added. And you can use a 3rd party blogging service to create your blog and embed its page into one of your iWeb pages with an HTML snippet and iframe code.

  • How do I get my Old iWeb Sites off my External HD (1 Domain file) and onto my new internal HD?

I justrecently had to replace my internal HD on my iMac. Before doing it, I backed up my 2 iWeb Sites (the Domain File) onto my external HD.
Now I have a new Internal HD on my iMac.
When I open my domain file located on my external HD, iWeb opens. Now I'd like to save the file back onto my internal HD.
How do I save my 2 web sites that I now see on the left back onto my internal HD. (When I click on "File", "Save", it just saves it again on the external HD, because it's reading the file from the external HD?)
    Thanks....
    Brian

You need to copy the domain.sites file from the external hard drive into your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on the new hard drive. If there is no iWeb folder in the Applicaiton Support folder create one.
Be sure it's your home library that you're working in.

  • Where can I keep my old iweb site now that mobile me is gone

I had my iweb site posted on mobile me, now I was wondering where I can store it to share with others

You will need to get yourself a 3rd party web host.
I have been using IX Webhosting for several years with little to no problems "usually the problem was something I did" and they have been quick to solve any issue I have come across. The have plans that start at $3.95 a mo (USD) and their customer service is top notch.

  • Updating old iWeb blog/sites with new templates?

i would absolutely love to use the new iWeb templates, but don't want to have to start a whole new series of sites or a new blog just to do it.
is there any way to update my blog and sites created before iWeb 1.1 with the new templates? or is this just asking too much?

I don't think there's an automatic way to do this (like in Keynote) and it's really too bad. Actually, in Keynote when you change themes, you basically have to go over each slide and tweak it anyway.
With iWeb, I guess you could create a parallel blog (keep it invisible to your viewers while you are transitioning) and start recreating things. You basically have the ability to "select all" on a page and copy and paste everything as a block to a new page. Maybe that will cut down on the amount of work required.

  • Just got a new mac - how can I keep working on my old iWeb site??

    Hi friends,
I just migrated all my old data from an external hd onto my new MacBook. I see my website data, and I put it in the Sites folder, but opening iWeb prompts me to start a new website. How do I continue working on my website, i.e., open my old files in iWeb?
    Thanks!

iWeb '08 stores your website data in a domain.sites2 file located in Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb.
You need to copy this to the same location on your new Mac and then double click the domain file to launch iWeb for the first time only. After that you can launch your site from the application.
If you open a new site in iWeb first you can save the blank domain file in a new folder for starting new sites.

  • OLd iWeb site keeps showing up...

    Hi.
I have published my site to replace the old one.
When I visit the site in Safari, the old site shows up.
    I have cleared my cache
I have used iDisk and deleted all the folders and files under the iWeb folder
I then republish the new site
I visit the site in Safari
    The old site shows up!
The only thing that seesm to work is when the old site is displayed in Safari, I type a "?" and refresh and I get my new page.
Does it take some time for the Mac servers to somehow deliver the new pages? The old pages are not in my iWeb app, or on the iDisk?
    Cheers
    JK

You can empty the Safari cache but you have no control over what is served by your ISP.
Placing a ? at the end of the URL in the Address window should "force" a fresh page.

  • Transferring an old iweb site onto iweb on a new computer

    Hi,
I made a website using iWeb '08 on my laptop and managed to publish it onto the web using an FTP. My hard drive then blew up and i stupidly hadn't backed up anything. Anyway I now have managed to download it onto my laptop on a file but cannot work out how to get it back onto iWeb so i can continue to edit and update it.
Sorry for the essay and any help will be much appreciated!
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iWeb cannot import files only create them. So you'll have to recreate the site from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 of tje iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the published files in the reconstruction of the site.

  • Changed computers... want to use old iweb site on new one

    Hi Guys
I have recently changed my iMac, All my iweb files are on my idisc, but i cant open or access them in iweb again.
Is there a way to import the files so i can continue editing my site daily as i used to on my old imac??
    help me please!
I am a recent mac convert!

If you still have access to your old computer you need the "domain" file located in your user library/application support/iweb.
This file can be transfered to the same location on the new computer or a location of your choice and double clicked to access iweb.
If you don't have access to the file you pretty much out of luck. You can not import the published site back into iweb.
The domain file should always be backed up.
    good luck

Publishing your site to a folder is useless for your purposes. You need to transfer the Domain file which created the site to your new machine.
