Updating ONYX

I am currently running ONYX 1.9.5 on both my iMac and MacBook.
1. Should I update to the newer version?
2. How do I do this? Will I have to uninstall the older version. If so how?
3. Is ONYX a safe and valuable tool for a Mac or am I better off just leaving my Macs on all the time and let Apple "work its magic"?
Thanks.
Tom

1. Version 2.0.3 is the latest at present: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html
2. The installer will most likely replace the existing package.
3. You no longer need to leave your Mac on all the time for it to perform system cleanup tasks. It should now perform them when the machine is active if it misses it's scheduled time. There's no reason to use Onyx if everything is working normally. It can't prevent problems. But, it is a useful tool when things do go wrong and you need to clean up various caches etc.

  • Leopard Installer.app No longer working

    Hello all,
OS X will not allow me to install ANY THING , it started after installing the 10.5.3 update. I thought corrupt google Sketch up .dmg , but after trying some other .dmg installers it turns out the installer.app bounces in the dock and then quits . i tried all the basics ... restart , software update, Onyx, disk verify . How ever if i drag the .app package to the Applications folder i am cool. So, any thoughts or am i screwed until 10.5.4 or apple releases a patch bc there tired of the 50 reports a day from my PowerBook?

Get Info on the app in /System/Library/CoreServices
Be sure all "Plug-ins are check marked and under Sharing & Permissions:
    system = Read & Write
    wheel = Read only
    everyone = Read only
EDIT: also be sure the ".app" is appended to the name
You can also use Pacifist to extract and install just that application from your install disks.
Another thought... do you know if Apple .dmg's install, or is it just third party?

  • Maintenance Program

I tried to update Onyx and it came back with an error message that said it does not work with  Mavericks. It worked fine with Lion. It does not make sense. I now need to find a reliable/good maintenace program that will work with Mavericks,

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac" and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
    4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
    5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    6. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. A computing device should not be a focus of your attention. It should be an almost invisible tool by means of which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that is always whining for your attention like a neurotic dog, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Software update 14 Java for Mac 10.6.8 gave me 27 permissions errorsI found 29 permissions errors.Disk Utility and Onyx cannot repair.

first time I contact Apple Support Communities
I have re-installed Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro(permissions = ok) and each Software update proposed by Apple.
After each software update installation, I have checked the permissions being ok.
But after install update 14 Java for Mac OS X 10.6.8 (proposed by Apple), I found 27 permissions errors. Disk Utility as well as Onyx cannot repair. (in fact they repair and if you check again you still have those 27 permissions errors)
It concern mainly System/library/Java/Java Virtual Machine  +  System/Library/Framewoks/JavaVM.Framework  and System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.Bundle
Do you have an idea how to get rid of those 27 permissions errors.
    Thanks in advance

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
    drwxrwxrwx
    d = directory
    r = read
    w = write
    x = executeable program

  • Can't send Mail after Mac OS 10.4.3 Update

Darn, I wish I hadn't run the latest update on a number of Mac G4s. I had no issues whatsoever with Mac Mail 2.0 using IMAP on our Exchange server until the latest update. Currently users are having sporadic issues with mail getting stuck in the outbox. I have spent the day reading the forum and trying various things (trashing the outbox, deleting preferences, using OnyX, etc). I can send fine from OWA and even from Entourage but not Mail mail. The Connection Manager shows I'm connected fine to both IMAP and SMTP but the Activity Viewer basically just stalls. I get no error messages. I have a hard time believing it's anything other than the Mail client or some software it utilizes, having been corrupted from the upgrade. Does anyone have any suggestions

Doh! I finally ended up discovering exactly what my issue was with not being able to send attachments in any E-Mail (Mac Mail, Entourage, etc.) on a Mac. The 10/100/1000 NIC on the MS Exchange Server was manually set to 100MB and plugged into a gig port on the switch. Just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone else has the same issue.

  • Help viewer does not work after update to 10.4.4

Since updating to 10.4.4 my Help viewer does not work, and all of the troubleshooting fixes suggested in other threads have not had any success in resolving this. I've noted that when I go to Users>Library>Documentation>Help there is no mac.help file - can someone tell me if that means that I've lost the file altogether and need to reinstall it? I get to the first screen of the viewer, but the links from there don't work. Thanks for any help that you can provide!

Thanks for your suggestion. I downloaded OnyX and ran the cleaning function. After restarting, I opened Help and once again the first screen appeared fine. But again most of the links did not work, though those under the "What's New" heading did work. I might add that I had previously tried a variety of suggestions posted in another thread, which included deleting from the caches folder in Home>Library several files such as com.apple.helpui and help.plist in the Preferences folder. (As noted in my previous post this evening, I also created another user but that also did not have any effect.) Any other ideas? Thanks

    Hello,
After the new software update to 10.3.1.1779, existing bluetooth handsfree does not work properly. Whenever I try to call using handsfree, I get a message `Could not retrieve information from the device`or something similar. Also, some of the apps like tuneIn gives a `javascript error. Does any one have any solutions for this problem?

  • Scrolling in Preview does not work after update?

    Hi everyone,
I have recently updated my MacBook Pro (bought in 2011) to Maverix OS X 10.9.1 and ever since had problems with the Preview app.
Whenever I open a PDF no matter what size with Preview I cannot use the trackpad to scroll down.
It's not a fault in the trackpad since I can move the mouse and scroll in the sidebar and any other apps, simply not when I move the mouse over the PDF and want to scroll down.
<edit> This is all the time! I have read dicussions where people had a problem with the trackpad not scrolling for 1-2seconds and then it's working again. Mine just does not work period. It never has unfortunately. <edit>
I have enabled 'Continuous Scroll' in preferences and tried several other solutions I could find in this community (e.g. System Preferences -> Trackpad -> Change setting to 'with inertia'; that option was not available in my preferences) and I just don't seem to be able to solve this problem.
I have also tried to set the preferences for 'Show Scrollbar' to 'always' (which had been suggested by one user). The scrollbar dows show up and I can click and drag the bar und thus the pages but it did not change my problem with the two-finger-touch-scroll on the trackpad.
It's really bugging me since the only way I can scroll down is using the down-arrow constantly which is incredibly annoying.
Anyone got any ideas? The same problem? A solution even?
    Thanks for your help!!!
    Cheers
    haiviva

    There's a few possibilities then.
    1) Startup to your Leopard installation disk. Don't reinstall the OS, just choose Disk Utility from the menu bar when you can. Once Disk Utility is running, choose your hard drive and click on Repair Disk. If any errors are indicated, keep running Repair Disk until it says everything is okay. If you can't repair the errors (if any) after a few tries, you'll need something much better suited to the task. Most people rely on Disk Warrior.
    2) If the drive has no errors, remain booted to the Leopard installation disk. Without leaving Disk Utility, on the same hard drive, run Repair Permissions.
You can do both of these steps from an external hard drive if you have Leopard installed on it. Boot to the external drive and run the same two first steps. DO NOT use Tiger or Panther. Running Repair Permissions from the wrong level of OS X will cause a lot of headaches.
    3) If you still can't change file associations, then try dumping the Launch Services Database. This is the file which controls what file types are tied to which applications. OnyX is one such utility that can delete the database for you. Be careful with this utility. It can do a lot of different things, so only do what you need to at this point. Also make sure to download the version for Leopard. Once you have Onyx, launch the app and type in your admin password. Click on the Maintenance heading. Turn on the check box at the top for "LaunchServices". Make sure all other check boxes are off and click the "Execute" button. Onyx should tell you to restart. Do not skip restarting".
Now try changing any file associations. If it still doesn't work, the OS may be damaged. It's not uncommon for a damaged system to appear okay until after you install a large package like CS4. If that's the case, then perform an Archive and Install from the Leopard installation disks. Make sure to choose the option to preserve your settings.

  • Software update hangs

I have a 21.5 inch Intel iMac mid 2011 and all has been working perfectly since November 2011 when I bought it.
The problem I am having is that when using the software update application found under the appleysumbol on the upper bar, the application says 'checking for new software' and hangs/freezes at what I would call around 20%. I have left the application running for several hours and the bar hasn't moved an inch.
I have tried using both Wi-Fi and ethernet connections to run the software update and neither have helped.
I have also tried several options I have found on some apple forums, including deleting software update caches and using 'Onyx' to delete software update cache and download cache.
As well as this I downloaded an installed the OS X Update Combo 10.7.3 and reset my system, along with verifying and repairing disk permissions. None of this helped.
Could anyone please advise on some way to sort this out as I don't particularly want to install all future updates manually
    Thanks

    Hi,
27" Intel Mac Running Lion with 8GB Ram.
Having same kind of problems after dowloading 10.7.3
Update would see the download for IPhoto 9.2.2 and then would try to get it, but when the progress bar came up nothing would happen. After a while a message came up saying unable to connect to Server, decided to manually download and Install, had to do do the same for Aperture 3.2.3, Safari 5.1.4 and the Digital Camera RAW Compatability Update 3.10.
Now the System is up to date when I try Software udate again it hangs around for ages until it tells me my Software is up to Date.
Have read an Article on the Net that in Mountain Lion you will have to download Software updates from the App store so Everything is one place, just wondering if these Problems we are having is the Precursor to that being implemented.
    Regards.

Thankssss a lot, gentlemen and ladies

    Welcome to the Discussions,
Only one idea, go to Nortons Site and download the UnInstaller,
Norton has shown itself to be Unhappy Camper with anything MAC.
    Cheers Don

  • How can i transfer data from old MacBook Pro, which is too old to update time machine, to the newest MacBook Pro?

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, and wanted to transfer all the data from my old MacBook Pro, but I get the message saying I need to update time machine on my old one in order to use time machine. However, my old one is too old to update. So I decided to use the cable to transfer, because I heard I can do it that way even though it could take time. But I have no idea what to do...
    Can someone help me?

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Snow Leopard Update Broke 2 Printers (Samsung, Brother)

One of the Snow Leopard updates has broken both of my printers. Both are hard-wired network printers that previously worked fine.
    1. Brother HL-5250DN B/W laser
    - When I print HTML pages, the page background color defaults to black, so I get a solid black page with graphics stuck in. I first noticed this in Safari; changing the "print backgrounds" setting doesn't fix the problem. I then saved a page (www.apple.com) to HTML source and tried printing it from other apps. Firefox & Text Edit both had the same problem. MS Word (Office 2004) did not.
    - If I create a PDF file from a web page in Safari, then print it using Preview, the problem occurs. If I print it using Photoshop Elements, it prints correctly.
Note that images LOOK fine. The all-black background only occurs when printing.
    2. Samsung CLX-3170 Color Laser
No matter what I try to print, I always get the same error: "couldn't create rgb colorspace". I have searched both these forums and the web and can't even find a description of what might be causing this (although may Mac owners seem to be having variations of the problem).
    3. Troubleshooting -- What I have tried (systematically, multiple times)
    - Re-installed latest printer drivers from Manufacturer's sites
    - Installed Gutenprint 2.4 CUPs drivers
    - Repaired permissions
    - Reset the Print subsystem and re-installed all printers
    - Tried different printer drivers where available (the Brother has a BR-script driver)
    - Run OS X software update
    - Restarted my system
    - Removed printer-related items from Logon
    - Reset Safari
    - Run Onyx and cleaned all caches and nearly everything else
    4. I have an iMac G5 running 10.5.8. It prints all of the above to both printers with no problems.
At this point I'm starting to wonder how well Windows 7 might run on my iMac... (only half kidding).
I've wasted hours on this problem. I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.

If you are using the Brother driver, have you tried using the Generic PostScript PPD as a workaround?

Which driver are you using when adding the printer? Have you tried the other one? Samsung has SL drivers for this model, so you shouldn't have to use the Gutenprint driver.
I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.
Apple doesn't write the drivers, so if using the Generic PostScript PPD or switching drivers doesn't work, you might have better luck contacting Brother and Samsung.

  • Can multi users use a single itunes library to update ipods?

I have multiple users set up on my Powerbook G4 for myself and my 2 kids.
They just got 4G Nanos for christmas, so I want to share my itunes music with them.
Can someone please explain how I do this, so that they can log in to their own accounts on the G4, start itunes and update their own ipod nanos individually with music shared from my itunes folder?
    Thanks

that's actually what i do, i keep my library on an external firewire drive, and then back it up to another external firewire occasionally, as at almost 90gb, i certainly dont want to lose the music i've ripped from my huge cd collection.
i've also found that while i too was concerned about taking my entire library with me on vacation, i found that i never got too far into my 40gb ipod library, let alone wanting more... i actually use my ipod more, even at work, since i'd rather update ratings and things on there vs the main hd, and i sync manually. maybe just use the ipod for the bulk of what's in the lib, and if there's anything missing that you think you'll want, make sure that is available on the hd when you go.
if you do go the route of keeping it on the external, i'd go ahead and move it over to there, and then tell itunes that it's in a new place (via prefs), and it might have to re-map a few songs (+/- 10%), but you won't have to do the alias trick, which might not work right if itunes is launched and the ext drive is not mounted. i do the alias trick at home on two computers, and the ext drive at work for the big libraries.
and while i personally wouldn't recommend it, there are a few apps out there that can "virtually" re-partition the hd, some without having to set it up that way first. i think one is called "drive genius"... i was looking at them about a year ago for my emac, but since it only has a 40gb, i just copied everything over to my ext firewire drive, and then reformatted, tested, and partitioned, and then copied everythign back. it also gave me an opp to do a fresh install of the system, which i like to do every year or so when the time is there for me to do it. it keeps me from cluttering up my computer too much over time, and gets the extra caches and localizations out that onyx and the like don't find.
    cheers,
    - jeremy

  • Lost calendars in iCal since latest update

    Hi
When i opened ical yesterday it appears that all the calendar titles from the left hand side pane have dissapeared. It is very odd because all the data are still there.
When I start iCal there is nothing on the monthly view but when i switch to the weekly view and back again the calendar events appear on the monthly view but still no sign of the calendar titles on the left.
I noticed that someone else had the same problem and i tried deleting the com.apple.iCal.plist file from the preferences folder and start iCal again with no success. The problems above are still the same.
Can anybody please suggest a solution? I have already checkd permissions, run Onyx and a few other similar utilities with no success.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks guys.

I also at first attributed this problem to the latest security update I did. But I think it only manifested then due to quitting iCal. I had also just recently started using the Tasks app on my Treo and syncing the entries to iCal. I now believe this is indeed related to repeating tasks. iCal doesn't support them, but Palm does. So if you are syncing to a Palm device with Missing Sync or something other than the limited iSync, you'll probably have problems. Apple's handling of task or to do's is pretty pathetic anyway so I removed all my tasks from iCal and manage them solely on my Treo. No more problems
It's a shame that Apple's iCal team can't even provide as much functionality as the Palm OS, which for all intents and purposes hasn't been updated in years. :-/
