Updating QuickTime compressor options in FCP 5?

Is there a way to update FCP 5 with a new Quicktime video codec? I'd like to import AVCHD video clips (MTS format) into FCP 5. Since FCP does not support that format, I converted it to .MOV files using H.264 AVC (advanced video coding) compression. Plays well in Quicktime player. Unfortunately FCP 5 does not support H.264 AVC compression even though I can import it and place it on the timeline. When I try to render the clip from the timeline, codec error appears.

You're right, H.264 would be a compressed video. My only problem is how to convert to DVCPRO HD when I'm on a G5 power Mac which is not intel-based. Have not found a converter tool yet to get it to import successfully into FCP 5.

  • Compressor 2 with FCP 5.1 workflow

    I've been reading about using Compressor 2 with FCP 5.1 and have been a bit surprised by some of the following suggestions:
    These are from Larry Jordan's website:
    "Compressor 2 has problems with both motion estimation and 2-pass VBR. If you are using Compressor 2 make sure to select 1-pass VBR Better and set Motion Estimate to Better. Using Best settings creates very poor video.
    There is a lot of talk on the Apple discussion site that 2 pass VBR gives artifacts, especially on transitions and is generally to be avoided.
    To compress the file in Compressor, DON'T use "Export to Compressor" in FCP -- it doesn't work reliably. Instead, open Compressor, then drag the file into Compressor and adjust settings.
    In their effort to tackle the problem of overshooting data-rates in C1, Apple seems to have ruined the quality of 2-pass VBR encoding to some degree. I've seen quite a few cases now where 2-pass VBR doesn't look as good as the simple 1-pass.
    The new version of Compressor has technology in it that is not duplicated using QuickTime conversion.
    I have never been comfortable with exporting using QuickTime Conversion. For one thing, it automatically down-samples your movie to 8-bit. For another, it will not be as good a quality as Sorenson Squeeze for the web, or Compressor for DVD. Third, Apple removed the MPEG-2 compression option with the release of QuickTime 7. Finally, the codecs it contains, while adequate for home use, are not up to professional standards either in terms of file size or image quality."
    So, from what I gathered from Larry's website...
    Use VBR 1 pass instead of VBR 2 pass for best quality
    Use Motion Estimate Better instead of Best
    Compressor offers better quality compression than Export>Quicktime Conversion
    Don't use Export>For Compressor from FCP, instead export a FCP reference file from Export>Quicktime and use that in Compressor.
    What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Well, different "experts" with slightly different views.
    This from hanumang's response to Jerry Hofmann over in the FCP discussion forum:
    FCP unrendered to Compressor 2?
    hanumang, have you seen a quality difference using the compressor method?
    Jerry
    In my experience, yes, there is most definitely a difference in quality.
    For sake of completeness, when it comes to exporting for DVDSP, this is how I'd break it down:
    File > Export > Using Compressor on unrendered timelines in FCP. The best way to do things with FCP & Compressor - especially true if (as mentioned) you're working in some compressed format like DV and doing lots of filters, motion effect and compositing within FCP. In my experience, color correction comes out much cleaner on DV-sourced footage.
    On a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the best that Compressor outputs, this method is a 10
    File > Export > Using Compressor on rendered timelines in FCP. While inferior to #1, this tends to work better on high-motion footage that needs to be encoded at a low bit rate (which I'd consider 5 Mbps or lower) than #3 because of the frame-by-frame processing. Also, transitions tend to come out better (again, at lower bit rates).
    I'd rate this method a 7 out of 10
    File > Export > QuickTime Movie with DVD Studio Pro Markers, then import into Compressor 2. While this rates at the bottom, in many cases it's hard to distinguish the output from #2 & #3 unless you're encoding at a 5 Mbps or lower bit rate
    I'd rate this a 6 out of 10
    In terms of encoding times, if #3 is my baseline, #2 takes about 2-3x as long. #1 takes about 4-5x as long as #3 for me (depending on the level of complexity).

  • Export Using Compressor locks up FCP

    Im kind of a newb to compressor so bear with me.... I was under the impression that when you export using compressor from FCP that you were still able to edit and work within FCP as compressor is a separate program. However, whenever i use the export using compressor option i get a dialogue box in FCP that says 'compressor processing' and then it goes through my whole FCP timeline frame by frame. I know in the past i have exported using that option and was still able to work inside of FCP while compressor rendered. Could i have possibly changed some settings in compressor to cause this to happen?

    This also is normal when compressing an HDV source sequence into h.264.
    HDV is a Long-GOP format, which requires a lot of processing power to decode. H.264 is also a highly compressed format, which also takes processor power to use.
    Depending on your machine, you may want to look into how to set up a Quickcluster.

    To play on DVD Players, it has to be MPEG2.
    It's under 2 hours; I'm surprised it won't fit. If not, get Compressor and lower the bit rate to fit.
    The native resolution was 980X720…you mean 960?
    It will all be resized to 720X480, which is DVD standard.

  • Security Update (QuickTime 7.1.6) has an invalid signature. Not installed.

    I installed QuickTime 7.1.6 on XP Pro SP2. I chose the option to make it available to All Users. I am now logging in on the same account that I used to perform the installation. That account is an Administrator account.
    When Apple Update runs on my new QuickTime installation, it says a Security Update is available, plus iTunes. I uncheck iTunes and proceed with the security update. It gives me this error message:
    Security Update (QuickTime 7.1.6) has an invalid signature. It will not be installed.
    I tried Tools > Download Only and it fails with this message:
    Security Update (QuickTime 7.1.6) has an invalid signature. The download has been removed.
    I tried manually downloading the security update directly from the Apple site. I get the full download no problem. When I run the msi package, I get this message:
    The system administrator has set policies to prevent this isntallation.
    Reading posts on this forum, I looked at registry keys and permissions. The HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\QuickTime.QuickTime key owner was Administrators. The owner of the QuickTime keys under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime is Kevin (me, also an Administrator). I modified QuickTime.QuickTime so Kevin is the owner, made sure it trickled down to all subkeys, and the problem persists. No change in behavior.
    What do I do now?

    What was this "other" update that installed sucessfully? I noticed that you are still using OS10.4.7.
    Did you repair permissions prior & after the installation? If not, suggest that you do so & try to install QT again. Make sure you repair permissions after the installation.

    To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
    Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").

  • Update "when new" option in the EO

    There are 2 projects, one with Bussiness component and the other with JSP's.
    In the EO for an attribute if I set it as updatable "When New" option instead of "Always" or "Never", then it works properly when I test my AM. ie. We can enter a value for his field only at the time of insert. Once we save we can only view the value, we can't update it.
    But the problem is in the other project when we run the Insert JSP we cannot enter any value since there is no text field for this attribute.
    In the Edit JSP also it is like this. Ofcourse in the Edit JSP it should not allow us to update so the text field should be display only & that is coming correctly but how can it come as a display filed in the Insert JSP ?
    In that case there is no difference between setting "Updatable Never" and "Updatable When New".
    Please clarify .
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I need to know some more details to know exactly why the field is not appearing.
    1. Is this an attribute that was included in your EO when you first created it, or one that you added later?
    ARCHANA : This attribute was not included later. It was there when I first created it because it is the "Code" which is the primary key.
    2. Is this attribute in the View Object your JSP insert page is based on?
    ARCHANA: Yes, It is there in the View Object.
    3. Is the View Object your JSP insert page is based on made up of one EO, or is it based on more than one EO?
    ARCHANA : The View Object is based on one EO only.
    4. In your JSP, you can try adding the following code to see if the attribute field will get displayed:
    <jsp:useBean id="RowEditor" class="oracle.jbo.html.databeans.EditCurrentRecord" scope="request">
    <%
    RowEditor.initialize(application, session , request, response, out, "theModule.theView");
    RowEditor.setTargetUrl("theView_SubmitInsertForm.jsp");
    RowEditor.createNewRow();
    RowEditor.setReleaseApplicationResources(true);
    RowEditor.setDisplayAttributes("Attr1,Attr2...");
    (enter the names of the attributes you want displayed in the setDisplayAttributes method.
    Laura<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
    Actually my JSP has exactly the same code as u have sent. I have included "Code" in my setDisplayAttributes() method also. The label for this attribute appears but adjacent to it there is no text control to type the data when I insert data.
    Please explain.

    These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
    Backup the library with this User Tip.
    Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
    Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
    Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
    Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
    Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
    I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
    Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
    If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
    Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

    "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable", and further states that "click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'quicktime.msi' in the box below"..
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.

    I have gotten the following failure repeatedly on every attempt (about 5x) of QT 7.5 update. I have successfully used Software Update to get to OS X 10.5.4 but the QT 7.5 update has not succeeded.
    The Software Update status window says' Downloading 1 item Expanding and verifying QuickTime...'
    The error message is 'The update "QuickTime" can't be Saved. Software Update could not expand the package correctly.'
    Based on the QT discussion board i am wondering if it is even a good idea to get this 7.5. However the iTunes 7.7 says that it requires QT 7.5. I am at iTunes 7.7 now. The reason is I read that I need to be on 10.5.4 OSX and iTunes 7.7 before downloading iPhone OS 2.0.

    I was using Software Update, which is supposed to know the correct version. Once, I did try to get the Leopard version off the downloads web page and the disk failed to mount. After your reply I tried again from the downloads page and this time it worked.
    So problem solved, but I have no clue why...I had just rebooted... but I had rebooted before without it helping. It seems random chance combined with enough reboots did the trick.
    Thanks for your help.

    Can someone explain to me what is the difference between both options ?

    Option overwrite: all properties are overwritten. If they are not maintained in the source file, they will be deleted in the member sheet
    Option update: only the properties maintained in the source file are overwritten. The other ones are not changed.
