Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

And you might also have to use the Adobe Cleaner to remove all traces of the bad installation:

  • HT201364 Mavericks will not download or install...

Mavericks will not download or install... Macbook Pro 17, early 2009, plenty of memeory... Clicking the download or install button shows button depression, but no response otherwise, and download never happens. Any idea as to what is wrong???

Basic troubleshooting steps outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore.
    Have these been tried?

Make sure you are logged into your admin account to download Mavericks.
System Preferences > Users & Groups > Password
Make sure the Firewall is turned off in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
Disable anti virus software if installed.
Network monitoring apps such as Little Snitch or Growl can prevent App Store downloads
Mavericks is a 5.35GB file. Make sure there's a least 15% free storage space.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage

  • I had erase my hardrive and need to reinstall OS X, do I need to reinstall Snow Leopard/mountain lion first before Maverick will take

I had to erase my HD, I have Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion was added for an upgrade after that, now when I try to download the OS X, my HD looks like it going to take it, then it goes no where. And now what is showing up is OS X  Maverick for a download, which I didn't even know it existed until I had to down load.  I am wondering will I have redownload Snow Leopard or Mountain lion  before the OS X Maverick will download.
    thank you

Well, you can do an erase and install via the Recovery HD:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks?  Not for everyone!

I have one of the mid 2007 24" iMacs which actually does not show the year in the Apple information area and since I bought this iMac from someone else, I dont know the year.  The Apple Information area just says MAC OS X version 10.6.8 yet when I go to the Mavericks OS download link, after a few minutes I get stoppage and am met with a banner that only says that Mavericks cannot be downloaded onto my iMac and no other real explanation.  I made sure I did software update first and that went fine. What can I do from here?  It appears that I have met all the requirements to download and install, but it won't do it.

If you do "about this mac" and then "more information" you should be presented with something like this
Here is a list of what mac can be upgraded to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13" Late 2008 Aluminum, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13" Mid-2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (15" Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Pro (17" Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

  • Recently installed Snow Leopard software and now my printer will not respond. Any suggestions?

I recently installed Snow Leopard. Now my printer will not respond. How do I troubleshoot that?

Start by telling readers the make&model of your printer, and what cabling you are using to connect it.
If you were connecting via AppleTalk, it is no longer supported, and you will need a different connection method. Readers can help you with that.
Some printers will need updated Drivers for Snow Leopard. Some printers need to be deleted and re-added.

  • Hello, I have a 2009 iMac, and my harddrive has failed several times now, and now I need to re-install snow leopard but my install DVD is damaged and I have bought a new snow leopard disc. However my iMac will not read the disc at all ?

Hello, I have a 2009 iMac, and my harddrive has failed several times now.
I tired to reinstall snow leopard with the install DVD that came with my iMac. However the disc is damaged so I bought a new Snow Leopard but my iMac wont read the new disc, it just stays in the apple logo screen, I have tired safe boot, holding down the "C" key on startup and tried using disc utility but getting nowhere.
    Please help. Thanks.

Might be related, if your hard drive is a 1TB drive,it could be a Seagate drive.
The drives are known to fail and your iMac maybe covered for free replacement under the Apple's Seagate hard drive replacement program until April 12 of this year.
I Believe the 2009 models are covered under this replacement warranty.
You can find out if you are eligible here.

    Good Luck!

  • I did a clean install of snow Leopard and now my iWork 09 will not work. does anyone one know where I can download the version for snow Leopard?

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and now when I reloaded iWork 09 from my timemachine it will not open anything. any ideas.

iWork '09 is still available from the likes of Amazon.
Your experience is why I never trusted downloaded versions when there's a physical DVD available.
It may be possible to reactivate with your code, but I can't advise you as to how.

  • Mavericks will not download on iMac

My early 2008 iMac uses OS X 10.7.5. Yesterday, I tried downloading Mavericks.  The iMac froze up.  When I go it running, I could not find the download. Now, when I try downloading anew, the iMac will not do anything.  I have checked Launch Pad, and the download is not there. Any suggestions?

Try logging in as the admin user and then downloading and installing the software. The /Users folder contains all the home folders for all the users on the system - and whenever you login the default icon for this home folder is always a "home" icon.
Make sure to install the software so that "All users" can use it, not just the person installing it - software installers usually ask you this question.
    good luck...

Trying to download the app through the app store to install Mavericks on my Mac Book. Will no download for some reason. I definitely have a very strong connection to the Internet. Any ideas?

What is the error message you are getting?
Is it asking for some other Apple ID?
