Updating software for iPod Touch Model MC086LL

The current software on my iPod Touch is 4.2.1 and I would like to update it to the most recent software or to the 4.3 version at the very least. However, when I click check for software I receive a message indicateing that my software version is uptodate.   I know for a fact that it is not the current version. How can I get my iPod Touch to do a software update?  I have read and followed the instructions in the iPod manual and some instructions I have found on this site, but I still cannot get the software to update. Some of my apps should be updated including the one I use the most to listen to my ebook.
Thank you in advance for all who answer my request for help.

I have no reason to purchase a newer version iPod Touch, I just want to up date my software.  There should be a way to do this and I wish I could find out how.  A 3 year old device is just not considered old, in my option, and should be able to recieve updates.  (F.Y.I., my windows computer is over 7 years old and I can update it's software.  If Apple makes you purchase new devices in order to have newer software, then I don't see me buying any more Apple device which is sad as I just purchased an iPad and "love" my iPod Touch.)

Reload older versions from iTunes on a computer, or buy a newer device.

  • Updating iPod touch to iPhone 3.0 Software for iPod touch, getting error 14

I recently tried to update my 2g iPod touch to the 3.0 software. During the installation, I got an error message saying that an "unknown error 14" has occurred. This happened during the restoration process, and then my iPod just gave me the screen with the USB cable and the iTunes logo. iTunes then told me to restore the ipod, and during that restoration process, I got the same error. I also tried doing the restore manually by finding the iPod software on my hard drive, and then option-clicking on the restore button the find the software and then install. If anyone has any fixes or suggestions for this problem, they would be greatly appreciated.

Ok. I have spent the last 8 hours researching this problem and have the absolute 110% answer to everyone's problem with this issue.
Error 13 and 14 : Are checksum problems with the firmware image that is in the update package.
The update package is a .ipsw (IPod or IPhone SoftWare). This file is actually just a .zip renamed .ipsw.
The error is caused by a failure to download a crc-free version of the file. Not really sure why there are so many crc problems with the iphone updates, but Apple does not check the integrity of the update package before wiping your current version of IPhone software and that is why all IPhones that start an update with a bad update package end up in recovery mode. These errors are NOT related to the iTunes installation, antivirus software, or firewalls.
Recommendation : use a program like "Object Fix" (Freeware) to verify the integrity of the file prior to commencing with any new updates. You will have to keep trying to download it until you get a error free file. Once you have a CRC error free file this problem will go away. (I thought TCP/IP helped get rid of CRC errors.)
I had another problem and that was...
Error 1603 and 1604 : These are USB driver connectivity problems.
Recommendation : FULLY uninstall and re-install itunes software as stated in the Apple support documentation. Be sure to reboot between each step and these problems should clear themselves up. In addition, firewalls and anti-virus software may cause these errors as well.
Finally, shame on apple for not properly documenting their software so that end users do not have to decrypt their error messages with no true support to solve the issues. These are problems that enough people have had that there should be specific documentation on these problems.

  • How do i update software on ipod touch?

I do not see an option for Software Update o nthe iPod Touch (8GB).

    To update
The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows

A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later. With OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1
A 3G to 5.1.1  Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
A 4G to 6  Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later

  • Why is no one worried about virus software for ipod touch

Everyone seems to think no virus scan is required for ipod touch. If you surf the web why would no virus be able to attack?

virus are made by people, right?
It's hard (not impossible), to make virus for Apple's software, so Apple or antivirus developers, don't really care about fighting them.
Don't forget to rate the answer as helpful or correct
Not exactly... So typically the normal "hacker" is looking for something, like passcodes to banking or other personal information, maybe a keylogger, or something to that effect.  That's a lot of why windows is targeted.  For one, its the widest audience, for two it is rather unsecure.  Apple goes to great length to ensure its software (Mac OS and iOS) is secure.  They provide you with warnings and require admistrative approval to do certain things that a malicious software may want to do.  So, again if you're actively engaged and don't do stupid things on the internet you'll be fine.

  • Having trouble with software update today for ipod touch

I connected my touch to my WindowXP machine today and itunes indicated there was an update for the device (1.1.2...i believe). I was already running the latest version of itunes. The touch update downloaded and then ran for a long time but never seemed to finish. Eventually (i left it for at least 30 minutes), I disconnected and the screen indicated I needed to connect it itunes.
I get an error that the unit is in recovery mode and needs to be restored, but that operation never completes either....runs indefinitely and never completes. Looking online, I found a method to reset the touch by holding down both buttons, but that doesn't help either. I never get the normal touch interface just the picture onscreen to reconnect it to itunes.
During the restore process, I get the apple logo and the little circle motion that turns (like an hourglass, but not that shape) but nothing ever happens beyond that.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Do i have to have either a 2.0 or later software for ipod touch to work?

I just bought my Ipod Touch(first gen) and shouldn't it come with a 2.0 software? When i checked its software model it said 1.2 does that mean someone already used this product? or i just have to buy the new 2.2 software update? Do you have to have 2.0 software or later to put music onto the ipod? cause everytime i try to send over the music it won't appear on the ipod music's list but in the itunes library.

dont worry, its not stupid. here to help!
the ipod touch 2.2 update will cost 6 pounds or 10 dollars.
to update, connect your ipod to itunes, and click check for updates on your ipod's page (should open when you connect), it should say that there is an update avaliable.
you will pay once for the update
you can also click this link (after plugging in your ipod)

  • Can't update firmware for Ipod Touch on my PC

I have a 1st gen Ipod touch & windows xp. I have the latest itunes.
It will not let me update the firmare, but I can sync fine.
To update the firmware, I give it to my husband and he can do it from his computer. Then I can sync with no problems. It's just the updating firmware that causes the ipod to crash (1602 error, but occassionally other numbers).
We thought it might have been that I didn't have USB 2 ports, so I bought a USB 2, 4 port card, and my husband helped me install it. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem and it still wont let me update. I thought perhaps because the usb 2 card came with driver disks, it might need a driver. But I checked the driver disk and it contained drivers for strange things I didn't have. Then I checked the internet and it said that with xp the drivers should be automatic with windows update, and mine is all updated, I checked.
I've checked my devices manager list, and the list only contains one "enhanced" usb port, even though the card I have has 4 ports, but maybe I am not understanding how the devices list works.
Just to clarify, have had the same problem with 2 ipod touches. My orignal one got a cracked screen (one crack so covered by warranty) and I received the replacement ipod touch yesterday, and I still could not update the firmware on my PC. My husband had to do it on his PC (vista).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I really would like to be able to update the firmware on my own PC, it's geting extremely annoying.

Because I cannot sync my music to my iPhone without updating on my PC which has all my iTunes. Where should I have posted my question to get the help I need?
